Inconsistent
The one word that comes to mind for this book is inconsistent. I liked the first 35%-40%, and then it went downhill. It felt like the author was engaged in the story early in and didn't really care anymore as the book progressed.
**SPOILERS**
So Bri is actually fun and kinda cool at the beginning of the book. She finds out about her unique powers, finds a cute guy but doesn't let her lust control her, and actually kicks butt. After this, however, she becomes a whiney tween obsessing over her love interest endlessly, complaining about her schedule and inability to excel in certain areas, and generally acting like she is helpless. TSTL becomes her defining characteristic, followed by selfish and then shallow. Apparently, this girl expected her dagger do all her thinking and fighting for her. Lazy of mind is an understatement with her. With her, it's all "Oh gee, a demon is attacking. I suddenly forgot that I grew up around demons and have seen one before, so I'm just gonna stand here and watch until my boyfriend rescues us." Or " Gosh, I just can't figure out why there are always demon attacks around me. OMG you mean they want to kidnap me?" Don't worry, she didn't figure that last one out on her own. The boyfriend had to tell her point blank after attack 2 or 3. Before, we had a confident, no nonsense survivor, but after her token bid for freedom, it's like the author felt she'd met the independent woman quota and decided to turn her into a helpless idiot.
And for a character who starts off selfless, she is pretty freaking self absorbed by the end of the book; to the point that when she has a friend sick from a spell, she goes into her mental la la land to whine and moan about a convo she overhears while attempting to get some ingredients to cure said friend. "OMG what did it mean and it's so unfair and and and..." Lucky her companion brought her back to reality of her friend being gravely ill because god knows she wouldn't have pulled her head out of the clouds long enough to do it on her own.
There are also some very awkward time jumps that pretty much skip the bulk of the relationship between her and her love interest. Makes it hard to buy into them as a couple. And apparently Tiffany is so into him early on but we hardly see her later in the story, though Tiffany is still supposedly jealous enough to attempt to sabotage them in the Gauntlet. Cue eye roll.
Given the lack of growth in the main character, it should not be surprising that secondary characters have the depth of paper cutouts. There is barely any attempt made to make them interesting in their own right but hey, at least you have your token gay. Everyone becomes a stereotype in this book, which is just sad.
Overall, I would not recommend this book. The plot holes are big, the characters thin and underdeveloped, and the main character is too shallow and self absorbed to be likable. Next time, more plot please.

I was up until 1am devouring Leia Stone's new paranormal urban fantasy, Fallen Academy: Year One!

There are books that you really enjoy, and then there are books you rave about. This was a 'rave about' story.
Year One is for you if you like an enemies to lovers romance, a sassy woman with heart (and a switchblade), a tight friendship, donuts, and a high-stakes world that includes warring angels and demons, and humans who accidentally inherited angelic/demonic powers.

"Shea took a sip of her water, and then pointed to a fellow student - Ryce, a super-hot Centaur. It was weird to call him hot since he was half animal, but his upper half had it going on."

Sassy, sexy, YA/NA paranormal romance.
This book didn't really stand out for me, so I don't think I'll read on in the series, but is was still a fast entertaining read.

Be consistent, please.
I read this book in the hope of having a nice time, not expecting the book to become my new all time favorite novel but what I read was......
Let me try to explain:
1. The book was inconsistent, one time Bri is falling for Lincoln then suddenly he's a prick and then he's back to being the greatest thing on earth. She just can't make up her mind and once she has you don't really get where the feelings are coming from.
2. Things happen way too fast; they're having a nice time at the nightclub and first thing you know there is a demon attack and a few pages after that everything is back to normal.
3. You don't even know what is going on, nothing makes sense; the reason why angels and demons are on earth is poorly explained, which makes it hard to keep up. The whole teacher/student relationship doesn't make any sense, nobody gives a f**k wether they're together or not, so if in world where angels and demons fight such things as doing illegal things don't matter anymore why does Lincoln make a whole drama out of it? If it is still illegal and Lincoln is right to play the drama queen why is no one slightly horrified when they display their love in front of everyone?
4. Brielle is shocked by everything; her being shocked isn't the reason why I find it disturbing, the reason I find it disturbing is that she is shocked over things that she should've seen coming from miles away. And people are not concerned enough with certain things, they just seem to roll with everything.
The writing style wasn't exceptional either, I mean everything was very easily read, I expected more elaborate phrases. It's a YA novel. It's not meant for kids, so you can set the bar higher.
Also I'd like to point out that in this book ugliness doesn't have it's place. Absolutely everyone is beautiful, except for the demons, which is kind of discriminating. Lincoln literally said:" You're too beautiful to be an archdemon", excuse you? Archdemons can be damn beautiful too.
Oh and don't worry in this book having someone not like you back is not an option, so if you like someone you can be assured he'll like you too. Isn't that great?
I guess the only reason I gave this book two stars and not one is because I actually finished it. I guess I was expecting that somehow the ending would make up for all the rest but no...it didn't.

Superb
A truly wonderful book, excellently written with a lot of details and unexpected events. It moves along very quickly, keeping me completely engrossed in the story. I would definitely recommend it to others. I’m off to start book two.

I enjoyed this one very much. But I have to admit I would like it better if I have not been reading another paranormal series which is so much appealing to me so comparing the two....this one is clearly less in many things...
I might read more books in the series in the future...

In meinen Rezensionen stecken stets große Mühen und eine Menge Herzblut. Gefühlte Stunden sitze ich vor meinem PC, um meine Gedanken und mein Empfinden möglichst nachvollziehbar zu Papier zu bringen. Ich feile an Formulierungen, lösche Abschnitte, die mir zu hartherzig erschienen, füge einzelne Absätze hinzu und verzweifele teilweise regelrecht an meiner perfektionistischen Idee, jedem Buch, jeder Geschichte und jedem Autoren bzw. jeder Autorin gerecht zu werden. Besonders schwer fällt mir dabei das Verfassen von Rezensionen zu Büchern, die mich nicht gänzlich von sich überzeugen konnten und dennoch in meinen Augen nicht als schlecht zu bewerten sind. Stiefmütterlich schiebe ich das Schreiben solcher Rezensionen vor mir her, weil es oftmals nur ein Gefühl ist, das mich zu meiner Bewertung bewegte. Letztendlich schiebe ich in solchen Fällen irgendwann den ewigen Grübeleien einen Riegel vor und verfasse eine Rezension, die sich schlichtweg an den stereotypischen Punkten, wie dem Worldbuilding, der Charakterentwicklung oder dem Schreibstil entlanghangelt. Meist bin ich mit dem Resultat mehr als unzufrieden und habe das Gefühl, die Arbeit des Autoren/der Autorin nicht in ausreichendem Maße gewürdigt zu haben. Leider stellte mich Celestial City wieder einmal vor genau dieses Problem. Schon die 3 Sterne verraten, dass ich das Buch unterhaltsam fand, aber nicht berauschend. Ausnahmsweise vermag ich in diesem Fall zumindest einen elementaren Kritikpunkt an der Geschichte zu benennen. Dieser lautet: Insta-Love. Anders als einige andere LeserInnen bin ich kein grundsätzlicher Gegner dieses Elements. Einige Geschichten funktionieren trotz oder gerade wegen der plötzlich eintretenden Liebe auf den ersten Blick sehr gut. Andere, eigentlich interessante und durchaus kreative Bücher wie Celestial City werden durch diesen Aspekt dagegen regelrecht zerstört. Die sich aufbauende Spannung und die wachsende Begeisterung wurden durch kratertiefe Einbrüche unterbrochen, wann immer die Beziehung zwischen Lincoln und Brielle innerhalb einer Szene in den Vordergrund rückte. Hinzu kam die allzu stereotype Figurenkonstellation: Der düster-gutaussehende Engel mit einer traumatischen Vergangenheit, dessen Seele nur durch die tapfere Protagonistin geheilt wird; die verrückte beste Freundin mit dem frechen Mundwerk; die Jahrgangszicke, welche insgeheim dem gleichen Typen nachschmachtet und zu guter Letzt der schwule beste Freund. Leider wurde dieses Beziehungsgefüge gerade im Bereich der Jugendliteratur derart ausgeschlachtet, dass ich Sodbrennen bekomme, sobald erneut dazu gegriffen wird.
Das übrige Worldbuilding, mitsamt seinen neuartigen Kreaturen beruhte zwar, wie alle Engelsgeschichten, auf dem altbekannten Luzifer-Gegen-Die-Welt-Muster, konnte mich wegen einiger kreativer Abwandlungen und Ideen aber trotzdem von sich überzeugen. An einigen Stellen fühlte ich mich allerdings stark an die Mythos-Academy-Reihe von Jennifer Estep erinnert.
Der Handlungsverlauf war recht vorhersehbar. Aufgrund einiger spannender und sehr gefühlsvoller Szenen (ja, ich musste einmal heulen, na und?!) wurde ich dennoch gut unterhalten. Wer noch nicht so viel im Bereich der Jugend-Fantasy gelesen hat, dürfte also durchaus auf seine Kosten kommen.

I liked it. I mean the YA romance, boy hates girl, girl thinks boy is a hot asshole, girl likes boy, boy figures girl's too hot and "different" not to like, has gotten old.
Honestly, it just makes me nauseous now but overall it was fun to read.
It required no brain power and annoying-stupid-kids who think they're invincible is just what the doctor ordered.

You would think a novel, with a large amount of people rating it five stars, wouldn't be so god-awfully bad, but it is. It's so bad that calling it mediocre is such an overstatement, so much so that it's suspicious how many readers supposedly like this book enough to give it a soaring rating. While I didn't mind the premise including the special, you're-the-one-from-the-prohpecy protagonist, I did mind the corny writing, the horrible pacing, and the lack of character depth (don't get me started on their stupid interactions).

Dieses Buch habe ich bereits vor einer Woche gelesen und ich habe es irgendwie versäumt, zeitnah eine Rezension dazu zu verfassen. Und jetzt kann ich mich fast gar nicht mehr an den Inhalt erinnern - und das spricht wohl wiederum für meine eher durchwachsene Bewertung des Buches.
Für dieses Buch habe mich spontan beworben, weil Geschichten rund um Engel und Dämonen zu meiner liebsten Fantasy-Sparte gehören. Positiv ins Auge gestochen ist mir auch das wunderschöne deutsche Cover, gegen das das englische Originalcover nicht einmal annähernd ankommt.
Der Einstieg in die Story hat mir noch gut gefallen. Brielle ist (zumindest am Anfang) noch eine starke, schlagfertige Protagonistin, die gelernt hat, sich selbst durchs Leben zu schlagen. Sie lebt in der gefährlichen Welt von Dämonen und Sklaven und wird aufgrund eines Deals, der ihre Mutter vor Jahren mit einem Dämon abgeschlossen hat, wohl auch für immer in der Schuld dieser Wesen stehen. Na ja, das dachte sie zumindest, denn eines Tages wird sie doch überraschend in die Akademie der Engel aufgenommen und trifft auf einen attraktiven jungen Mann, der sie ausbilden soll.
Und das war dann leider auch der Punkt, an dem mich der Plot allmählich verloren hat, denn spätestens nach Brielles Aufnahme im Engelsinternat, entwickelt sich die Handlung so klischeehaft und vorhersehbar weiter, dass ich mein Interesse verloren und die zweite Hälfte nur noch quergelesen habe. Angefangen bei den stereotypen Charakteren, bis hin zur Insta-Liebesgeschichte hat sich alles wie ein weiterer 0815-Abklatsch ähnlicher YA Fantasy Reihen angefühlt.
Leider war auch der Schreibstil etwas, der mich weder packen, noch richtig überzeugen konnte. Die Beschreibungen haben sich teilweise sehr umgangssprachlich gelesen und gerade die Dialoge habe ich als stark verbesserungswürdig empfunden.
Das Buch hebt sich leider kaum aus der Masse der YA Fantasybücher hervor und nutzt fast alle Klischees und Stereotype, die das Genre zu bieten hat. Damit konnte ich leider nicht überzeugt werden.
Fazit:
Celestial City besticht vor allem durch sein wunderschönes Cover und dem interessanten Worldbuilding einer zweigeteilten Stadt, die von Engeln und Dämonen regiert wird. Leider wird dieses Potenzial im weiteren Verlauf aber nicht genutzt und stattdessen bekommt man eine sehr klischeehafte Young Adult Romantasy Geschichte mit stereotypen eindimensionalen Charakteren zu lesen, die noch dazu mit einem maximal mittelmässigen, umgangssprachlichen Schreibstil erzählt wird. Es gibt leider deutlich bessere Engelsgeschichten. Diese hier konnte mich leider gar nicht überzeugen und bekommt von mir deshalb nur 2 Sterne.

Es gibt leider deutlich bessere Engelsgeschichten. Diese hier konnte mich leider gar nicht überzeugen und bekommt von mir deshalb nur 2 Sterne.

I wish i could give this book 0 stars. I don't even know how anyone enjoyed reading this. It was one cliché after the other. I hated the story and the characters.
Most of the book is the author just telling us what happened in a summary. It read like a first draft. The story would have benefited from some editing just to make the writing suck less. Nothing though, could have saved the characters as they were just terrible.
The character I found most offensive was Shea - the token black girl with as many terrible black female stereotypes as the author could fit into the novel. I cringed when reading any scene with Shea. At one point, the author had her randomly twerking.....seriously? Twerking in a car. The author was so focused on delivering the stereotype she didn't even stop to consider if this was possible. This is a quote from the book about Shea, "you can take the girl out of the hood..". My favorite was when she was called a bitch (in a good way of course because the author believes you can basically make a character an offensive caricature in a good way. ugh) I can't believe I read this crap. This book had more than one offensive character.
[Public service announcement to authors considering adding characters for "diversity". DON'T! It is ok if all the characters in your book areboring not diverse enough. Seriously it is. I believe you should write about what you know. So if say you write your novel and see omg all my characters are one race, then maybe first consider expanding your circle of friends so that when you do include characters of different races or sexual orientations you do not manage to offend everybody. PSA end]
And the amount of eye rolling and winking in this book made my heart hurt.

Such a fantastic and well written Angel vs Demon YA story. The characters are wonderful and you’ll quickly love all of them (excluding one at least). You can’t help but love and cheer for Brielle on her Year One journey at the Fallen Academy, and hope that she makes the target to get through the Gauntlet. I did loved the twist as to what the Gauntlet actually involved.
Can’t wait for what adventures are planned in Year Two...

We all know that everything Leia writes is amazing, but this completely blew it outta the water! I thought it would be a typical YA PNR. There would be a hot love interest, some angst, and a spunky best friend. It has all of those things, but it’s so much more. Leia makes it totally unique and completely her own. I don’t know how she comes up with all of these kickass books, but keep em coming!

Ich hatte echt Angst vor diesem Buch aber ich habe mich auf total gefreut. Doch die Geschichte war echt wirklich gut. Es gibt leider nicht so viele Bücher über Engel, aber dieses war besonders. Es klang wieder so typisch. Brielle ist etwas besonders und hat Gaben, die noch nie einer der Celestials gehabt hat, doch fand ich sie trotzdem total sympathisch und liebenswert. Ich freue mich bald weiterzulesen.

Die Idee rund um Engel und Dämonen ist sicher nicht neu, aber wie die Autorin es in dieser durchdachten fiktionalen Welt umgesetzt hat ist einfach nur fantastisch! Das ehemalige New York ist nach einem Krieg zwischen Engeln und Luzifer und seinen Dämonen in zwei Teile gespalten. Seit die Engel vom Himmel fielen, um die Menschheit zu retten haben sich die meisten Menschen in übernatürliche Wesen mit magischen Fähigkeiten verwandelt. Doch welche magische Gabe man besitzt offenbart sich erst am 18. Geburtstag. Demnach entscheidet sich auch, ob man auf die Fallen Acedemy der Engel gehen wird oder auf die Academy der Dämonen! Denn Brielle hat magische Kräfte, die es bisher noch nicht gegeben hat und die es nicht so einfach machen sie nach Engel- oder Dämonen-Academy einzuteilen.

In diesem Buch geht es in erster Linie um Brielle, die gerade erst an der Fallen Acedemy angenommen wurde, obwohl sie Dämonenangehörig ist und somit einem Dämon zu Diensten sein muss. Brielle war mir von Anfang an absolut sympathisch. Sie ist direkt, eigensinnig und absolut schlagfertig, was zu der ein oder anderen lustigen Szene geführt hat. Lincoln, ihr Tutor auf der Fallen Acedemy hingegen hat etwas mehr Zeit gebraucht, damit ich ihn so richtig in mein Herz geschlossen habe. Er war zunächst sehr abweisend und distanziert. Doch mit seiner beschützenden und liebevollen Art hat es schließlich doch geschafft sich einen Platz in meinem Herzen zu sichern. Neben den beiden waren aber auch so gut wie alle Nebencharaktere absolut authentisch und toll umgesetzt.

Der Schreibstil ist wundervoll bildhaft und flüssig. Ich bin absolut gut in die Geschichte reingekommen und konnte es kaum aus der Hand legen. Es hat wirklich großen Spaß gemacht dieses Buch zu lesen und mit Lincoln und Brie mitzufiebern. Vorsicht! Das Buch macht geradezu süchtig. Nach dem doch eher offenen Ende bin ich absolut neugierig auf Band 2 und kann es kaum erwarten das Buch nächstes Jahr zu lesen!

Je suis la première déçue d’avoir été déçue par cette lecture. Je m’étais hypée toute seule car la couv est sublime et le concept me paraissait vraiment cool. Et effectivement, l’univers est intéressant mais j’ai eu beaucoup de mal avec le rythme que j’ai trouvé bien trop rapide et les clichés qui m’ont fait lever les yeux au ciel (la relation amoureuse notamment). En fait j’ai trouvé que tout allait un peu vite et que ça manquait de profondeur sur pas mal d’aspects, ce qui m’a rendue très détachée de ma lecture tout du long. Ce n’est pas un mauvais roman, évidemment, mais ça n’était pas pour moi malgré le plot de base qui est sympa et prometteur :( dommage !

oh my. i was HOOKED. i was able to finish this book is one sitting. needless to say, i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it was so fast paced and easy to read. the world and magic system was so unique, it definitely gave off hunger games and divergent vibes.
i loved bri's little friend group, definitely gave off found family vibes. i liked how they were so supportive of each other regardless of their differences. it was nice seeing them interact with each other.
although the plot is somewhat predictable, the fast pacing of the book definitely ensures that there's never a dull moment. i was thoroughly enjoying it.
cant wait to see what brielle and lincoln are into in year two!! onto the next one...

I really liked the main character at the beginning because she seemed like a total badass that didn’t take shit, but slowly throughout the book she started to become so whiney and annoying. She was always worrying about Lincoln and their relationship seemed so rushed to me. I wish their were more interactions between them that weren’t them fighting with each other. I also wish their were more substance to the side characters, like her friends.
During the Gauntlet I was so intrigued that I couldn’t put the book down BUT I totally predicted that Lucifer would be the last demon lol.
Anyways,
The book was enjoyable and I liked the humor added in so I’ll be continuing with the series.

Auch wenn ich ein paar kleine Kritikpunkte an die Geschichte habe (Kritik auf höchstem Niveau), kann ich bereits jetzt schon glasklar sagen: ein absoluter Pageturner und ein Hochgenuss!
Leia Stone hat einen unglaublich flüssigen, leichten und humorvollen Schreibstil, der mich in kombination mit ihren Charakteren mehr als einmal zum lauten Losprusten animiert hat.
Brielle ist nicht nur witzig, Badass, mutig und kämpferisch, sondern ist auch loyal, hat eine scharfe Zunge und ist süchtig nach Donuts und Kabbeleien. Ich habe sie ab der ersten Seite geliebt, ihr werden so viele Steine in den Weg gelegt, sie wird immer wieder hart getroffen und zurückgeworfen, aber sie steht jedes Mal noch stärker auf. Auch in Lincoln habe ich mich mehr als verliebt. Er ist ein männlicher Love Interest ganz nach meinem Geschmack: heiß, attraktiv, unverschämt sexy, grummelig und sehr beschützerisch unterwegs. Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf, ihre komplizierte bisherige Beziehung weiter zu verfolgen. Neben sehr starken Protagonisten hat die Autorin auch sehr starke Nebencharaktere geschaffen, die sich immer mehr in mein Herz eingenistet haben.
Wenn ich über die Handlung nachdenke, fällt mir sofort der Begriff Pageturner ein! Leia Stone legt ein Tempo hin, dass mich hin und wieder förmlich nach Luft schnappen ließ. Mir wäre es stellenweise lieber gewesen, wenn sie das Tempo ein bisschen rausgenommen hätte. Sie arbeitet unglaublich viel mit Zeitsprüngen oder reißt manche Szenen nur sehr kurz an, die ein bisschen ausführlicher die Charaktertiefe noch unterstützt hätten. Natürlich haben auch teilweise die kleinen Details ein bisschen gelitten und ein paar winzige Logikfehler haben sich eingeschlichen, aber ansonsten eine unglaublich tolle Geschichte! Spannend, humorvoll, teils sarkastisch und actiongeladen, teils einfach nur spannend zu verfolgen. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf Band 2 und vergebe 4,5/5⭐

Celestial City - Akademie der Engel - Jahr 1 von Leia Stone
Dies war meine erste Engelsgeschichte und ich muss sagen, dass mich das Buch positiv überrascht hat und von sich begeistern konnte!
Der Schreibstil war wirklich süchtig machend, denn er war locker und flüssig und von daher sehr angenehm zu lesen. Zudem war er sehr bildhaft, wodurch man sich die Welt gut vorstellen konnte. Der Humor in dem Buch hat mich auch des öfteren zum Lachen und zum Schmunzeln gebracht.
Die Protagonistin Brielle war mir auf Anhieb sympathisch. Mit ihrer direkten und eigensinnigen Art konnte sie mich von sich überzeugen. Außerdem war sie sehr stur, mutig, loyal und schlagfertig. Sie handelte oft impulsiv, nichtsdestotrotz waren ihre Handlungen nachvollziehbar und verständlich. Mit Lincoln hingegen bin ich nicht sofort warm geworden, denn er war zu Anfang sehr distanziert und abweisend war. Auch die Liebesgeschichte kam nicht zu kurz, denn die Entwicklung zwischen Lincoln und Bri war wirklich schön anzusehen. Auch die Neckereien und Dialoge waren richtig unterhaltsam und lockerten die Geschichte auf. Es war auf jeden Fall eine prickelnde Liebesgeschichte mit Höhen und Tiefen und auch viel Gefühl.
Insgesamt war die Handlung fesselnd und mitreißend, man wollte immer wissen was als nächstes geschieht und konnte das Buch einfach nicht zur Seite legen. In dem Buch gab es einige überraschende und unvorhersehbare Wendungen, welche es wirklich spannend machten. Die Trainingsstunden sowie die vielen Veranstaltungen an der Fallen Academy machten das Buch abwechslungsreich.
Nachdem offenen Ende kann ich es kaum erwarten zu erfahren wie es im zweiten Band weitergeht!
Alles in einem konnte mich das Buch voll und ganz von sich überzeugen, denn es ist ein gelungener Auftakt der Reihe. Eine perfekte Mischung aus Fantasy und Liebe, mit viel Humor und Gefühl und eine ganz große Leseempfehlung an alle Romantasy-Liebhaber! 5/5
