I have a story to tell; an unlikely one, a romantic one. . . A secret one.
At nineteen I made a decision that unraveled my entire life and destroyed several others.
I, a commoner, had an affair with the crown prince, a man who may very well be my one and only true love.
When he cornered me against the wall of a little bakery off of Michigan Avenue, begging me to show him the secrets of the city, I couldn't say no. Especially when I was desperately seeking something to make my life a little less unbearable. And it did, it really did. We fell in love. Deeply, wildly, uncontrollably.
Kaylin Peyerk is a lover of badass fantasy heroines and the sexy men who feel lucky to love them. She has five full bookshelves, a bursting Kindle library, and a total love for the written word. When she's not crouched over the computer like a gremlin, you can find her curled up in a nest of blankets with a well-loved book, her two corgis Link & Gannon, and a steaming cup of hot cocoa...
Fuck... I cried so many times in this book journey. My heart is in serious pain. Man.. that was awesome. You know the first half didn't get me; that other half was the teary one. Strong writing and the style was so good... I don't usually cry with books. Just a little disappointed that I saw that it could be a twin to the Selection series, which I was not fun of, but this one was so much better despite the heavy inspiration. Just a few things that I personally didn't get: a) At that club how possibly they were dancing without James seeing them. b) He marries her friend, okay here. That girl is of the same status as OUR girl. Why? Just it doesn't make sense. c) The future queen, goes wherever she likes without a guard, isn't it dangerous? Also, again the future queen gets prepared for her big day at a friend's house and by her friend's mother.. and then the professionals come? Are you kidding me right now? d) Cover okay e) As a king... his first order is to get her out. Wouldn't it be more logical to imprison his father, to marry her, or something along those lines?
I received an ARC of this book to write my ramblings.

"Always remember that I love you- they cannot take it." Broken Crown is a story of impossible love set with a hint of pseudo-dystopian America-turned-monarchy. We're introduced to Imara and Rogan right out of the gate, and led on their journey of falling in love, and ultimately falling out of it. I enjoyed the premise of the story, though the characters felt a bit rushed to me, and there were some confusing sections near the end of the book that pulled me from the storyline. The dystopian inspired backdrop felt more like an afterthought than a driving force of the book, and causing a few moments for Imara that felt out of character. I would have loved for the characters to have been fleshed out more, particularly the villian; having him just be an in general bad guy didn't give into the urgency of what happens to the protagonist, or what Imara and Rogan were up against and WHY their love was impossible. Overall, I enjoyed the story concept, and would recommend.

I really love the premise of this story. And I really wanted to love the story itself. For the most part, it was enjoyable, I was really intrigued by the characters. I felt a little confused, and the story felt rushed. I just think it needs a little more work
I want to thank the author for giving me a copy of this book for review!
If I had to rate this, I'd give it about a 2.5 stars. I enjoyed that this book is easy to sit down with in one or two sittings and the beginning of this held so much promise. The premise of this book sounds amazing and the cover is beautiful! However, the point of view keeps switching from a third person view to a first person and it's distracting to read.
Following our main character, Imara with her princely adventures was almost a little too fast paced. Within their fourth or 5th time hanging out, they are already saying I love you and he is already sneaking into her window. Ew. I also felt that their relationship wasn't really high stakes as he was casually able to stroll around the city whenever he wanted.
The whole family dynamic with BOTH of their families is so so messed up. What about that scene where Rogan apologizes for "momentarily" being attracted to her sibling? Yuckkkky.
I ended up entirely skipping the letter chapters after chapter 13 because they caused me to become immersed with the story and were essentially summarizing what you just read. It's also very confusing because her family goes from needing her to steal fruits and veggies so that they could stay alive to suddenly making meatloaf??
Overall, this seems like a blend of The Selection trilogy and the Shatter Me trilogy.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
When I first heard the storyline blurb, I knew immediately it was right up my alley. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had hoped for. The forbidden romance with the prince had promise, but everything felt rushed. There wasn't any time to develop the characters or make me root for them. They had the smallest, most normal conversation in the alley, and suddenly her friend was like, "Oh my gosh, that story is so incredible - you have to go back there to see him!" I wanted to feel that way too, but I wasn't there yet.
Along with the rushed storyline and lack of character development, the grammatical errors were very distracting. The same sentence would change verb tense multiple times. The narrator was supposed to be telling us something that happened in the past. The sentence would start out in past tense, but then it would switch to present tense for the rest of it. I also saw a "they're" error, for example. They're small things, but they really do distract a reader and prevent them from being fully immersed in the world and story.
It's difficult for me to give a negative rating. I really do appreciate the author giving me an advanced copy, and I really admire what the author was able to accomplish (I could NEVER write a book), but this one missed the mark. If it went through more editing and revising, I think she could have something great.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.....I’d give this book 3.5 stars.... let me start by saying that ending shattered me and I hope there is more to come because it just can NOT end like that!!! Nope I refuse to accept it as The End..... I actually really enjoyed the whole concept of the story but I felt like the pacing was too fast at times and I would reread several pages to make sure I didn’t miss something. Imara was wild and a bit reckless at times but I think that was a major part of her charm. Rogan seems like a good guy with a good heart but I really wanted him to have more of a backbone! Maybe we will see more of that in the next book if there is one... James....he was probably my favorite in this book! He was just good!! He was what everyone in their life needs for that feeling of belonging and “home”. I really hope there’s a second book because I want to see where all these characters end up and what happens!!
The reason I don’t have a Finish date is because books like this, I like to go back and allow my creativity to wander a bit more. Especially when I get ARC copies. I enjoy writing for the heck of it, so books that left to the imagination and how they could do better are great for me. But, now to the book.
Yes, it would have been better to see the world from other POV’s. But, that is what other books are for. Even if they are just sub-books. What I mean is that I have seen authors do 0.5 then the 1st book. The author could use the other characters to have their turn with their POV. I think she was allowing us to see things from Imara’s POV. The next book could be, let’s say, Mikey’s POV. But, all in all, the storyline was good and the romance was there.
Knowing that this isn’t like her pararomance novels, this still held its own. I gave her the rating because I know what she is capable of.
This book was different than the other books that I've read by this author. I enjoyed the story but wished it was longer and had more details. The characters and their relationships were great however I wish the author gave us a more detailed story. I'm giving this book 4 stars because there was so much more positive aspects. This story kept me wanting more. Even when not actively reading, I found myself thinking about the characters and what was going to happen next. Overall, I recommend this author and this book.
I have started this book twice. I could not get myself past chapter 4. I’m keeping it in a (DNF) folder that I do go back and try to reread from time to time. I will update the review if my opinion changes. That said
THIS BOOK HAS POTENTIAL. It sounds like a great story line. There are a few grammar/typing errors that have me a bit worried. It looks like it could do with some editing. I’m also unclear as to why some chapters are in letter format, I assume with progress I would find out.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really wanted to love this book. I love the whole idea of knowing that the love story doesn’t have a happy ending and waiting to see how it unfolds. However, the execution of the story wasn’t all I had hoped for.
There were typos throughout the story that I found distracting, and the character development just wasn’t there. Overall, it had a lot of potential and the storyline is good but it just didn’t have the wow factor I was hoping for.
I received this book as an ARC to give my honest review. I enjoyed this book a lot. I felt it could have been better with more in-depth characters & world-building. It left me wanting more. It also felt a little bit rushed. I still enjoyed the story just thought it could have more. I would still recommend this to people.
This book was very different than the other books I’ve read by Kaylin Peyerk, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do, however have to deduct a star because it seemed unedited at times. That being said, this love story between people of two different classes was quite interesting. I would love to see this story continued in a series. I want to know what happens to Imara, Rogan, James, and Amy.
I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This was also my first time reading this author.
*** I just wanted to add here that I seriously love this cover ***
Okay, now on to the review... I loved the plot and I enjoyed this book a lot. The author most definitely has talent and a great imagination. The story kept me interested the entire time. Even when I wasn’t busy reading at the moment I would find myself thinking about the book and wondering what’s going to happen next. Unfortunately there were some negatives as well... There were quite a few spelling and grammatical errors in the story, as well as missing words and awkward sentences. Since these are only editing issues and the story itself was still great and captivating I looked past it and tried not to let it bother me or slow my reading, even though it did make me have to reread some sentences. I loved the characters but I also felt some of the characters were a bit underdeveloped and there were characters I really wanted to see more of. The world itself also felt underdeveloped and lacking in detail a lot of the time. The few negatives definitely does not outweigh the positives though, as I really did enjoy the story a lot. So much so that I wanted it to be a lot longer. I also enjoyed it enough that I’m really looking forward to reading more works by this author as she definitely has talent and knows how to keep an audience captivated. Overall I decided to give this book 4 stars because there were so many more things that I liked than disliked about it and I’m really glad that I got the opportunity to read this.
*** Spoilers below ***
Just a couple of other thoughts regarding the story -
I was warned upfront that this book does not have a HEA, but a girl could still dream otherwise, right? 🤷🏼♀️😂 Due to that I knew what was coming at the end. I was pleased when it didn’t go exactly as I had suspected though. I couldn’t help but wish that the ending was longer and more explored. It felt a bit rushed and there is more I want to know surrounding it. I think it would have also been really interesting to have chapters from Rogan’s POV showing you more about his character, family, and palace life. I guessed the truth about James very early on and was excited to see how it would play out. I wish there was more in the story about that. I think it would have been really interesting if the story about the rebels were explored more. I wanted to see what they do, what their plans and goals are, etc. As far as I’m aware this is a standalone, but I feel like the author left this world open enough that she can easily step back in to tell more stories about this world and characters, and if she maybe does decide to do that one day, you can bet that I’ll be picking up those books too 😊
