This book gives a much better feeling of a living place to the Realm than the other editions, instead of a top-down sparse one which we were used to.
The Realm felt earlier like a place where nothing happened, an idyllic place isolated from the issues of the rest of the world by the sea and their status as a superpower. No crime, no issues, it was basically a place to, well, exist before the civil war. So, what was left was giving information on trivia on the nobility, and maybe show one or more places.
In this edition, this feels more like a real country. There is crime, there is turmoil, there is civil unrest. Also, regions have their own national character and issues. This, much more than earlier editions, gives me the inspiration to run games based on the Realm.
All in all, a much better vision for the Realm than before. Thumbs up!
Honestly, as a fluff tool, it gives a lot. Its easy to understand, has great composition and gives you enough to craft your own Realm without forcing you to a metaplot if you don't want to. I got so many ideas for my games just by this book. The only downside is that its supported heavily by the dragon blooded and the heirs of the shoguante books, so if you don't have those books, you are going to get a far lower return for your money with this book.
Besides that, I enjoy it so much. It made me hate the Realm so much more and did it by making it a combination of ancient Rome at its apex, Qing Dynasty before the British invasion and Mad max fury road.
