Lee Papa has a unique ability to bridge the gap between what we call grounded normal life and the supernational and mystical. Lee teaches mindful leadership in business practices by first developing the concept within oneself through self-observation.

Through her core concepts, tools, and processes, she has led countless students to a more peaceful and productive way to navigate both personally and professionally.

Lee Papa is an avid spiritual seeker and an internationally admired speaker, trainer, coach, and author, celebrated for her expertise in mindfulness, meditation, and well-being.

Thoughts: The book contains a lot of inspirational quotes from people like Norman Vincent Peale, Martin Luther King Jr., Mark Twain, and more. It also has affirmations for you to use to help with stress and become more centered. It also stresses that mindfulness “is a part of every decision. It is a philosophy of life. Mindfulness is the nonjudgmental awareness of your thoughts, actions, and the world around you.” (Lee Papa). With that in mind, some of the things in the book were a little too “out there” for me. Which is okay. Not everything is for everyone. Which brings me to the biggest issue with the book. It is very colorful—not necessarily a bad thing—but for a person with color issues, I had a lot of trouble reading some of the pages—especially white print on yellow pages. Plus, I honestly believe this book would do better as a daily calendar than a book. It just seems to lend itself to that format.

What I liked: the various quotes from famous people. They were nice to read. Also, some of the exercises/mantras/etc. did pique my interest enough to want to follow them—maybe not on a daily basis, but definitely once in a while.

What I didn’t like: a lot of the colors made it difficult to read. Really – just stick to black on white, please. Or black on yellow. I wish publishers would keep readability in mind when producing these books. Also, as noted above, the format of this book would seem to lend itself better to being a calendar.

Recommendation: If you’re looking for a way to get deeper into mindfulness, this is a good place to start. Not all the daily offerings may resonate with you, but that is normal and part of mindfulness. If nothing else, enjoy the uplifting quotes and affirmations.

This book includes inspirational quotes from famous people like Nikola Tesla and Eleanor Roosevelt. I really loved these interesting quotes from a wide variety of people!

Most of the meditation prompts and guidance in this book are innocent reminders to release stress, focus on what is important, believe in yourself, and allow yourself to relax. But sometimes there will be a weird one that made me wonder about the underlying philosophy that is being taught in this book. It is very focused on self, and talks about an "Eternal Consciousness". There is an entire chapter about interpreting your dreams that sounded completely idiotic to me.

There is a lot of talk about "creating your own reality" and other strange ideas. (Reality is reality. You can change your perception of it or how you think about it, but what is real is real. You don't create it. It just is.) While reading, I would just try to enjoy the normal meditations and mindfulness prompts, and skip over the weird ones.

I did like the way this book made me think more mindfully about my surroundings, my thoughts and emotions, and my relationships with people. There are some really lovely ideas in this book, but I would be careful to determine for yourself what parts of this book are helpful and which are untrustworthy or even harmful in the long run.

Lee Papa set an audacious challenge for herself. Her goal, in this book, is to give the reader a daily dose of thought provoking “mantras, meditations, and prompts”. Although there are 365 ideas presented, not all of them are equal and some fall flat leaving you wondering what you really should think about that day. Often it is just a phrase that is to be repeated or an idea to be thought about throughout the day.

On the other hand, there are some real gems hidden in these pages which cause the reader to sit up and take notice. So, do not dismiss the entire book because she did not hit a home run every day. No player has ever had a perfect day every day. Take the good with the…not as good…and move on to the next day.

One other observation. As she focused on mantras, meditation and prompts, at times she moves away from the title of her book – “Mindfulness” – even as she defines it, “Mindfulness equals awareness: awareness of your thoughts and actions and the world around you – without judgement.” She focuses more on what her introduction says, “I wanted to look at trauma and drama, seek out ancient knowledge, explore the mind-body-spirit connection, and ease my own emotional suffering.” Needless to say, I was disappointed because I wanted more about mindfulness. Maybe, I just missed the point.

Upon request, the publisher, with no preset conditions, sent me a copy of the book to review.

My initial thoughts on starting this book were “what in the Jim Cunningham did I just read?” If you don’t get it, go watch Donnie Darko.

I made it through the whole book without DNFing, so there’s that. As a spiritual person who has been practicing for most of my life, I didn’t find this book useful. It is a book for beginners though, so I guess if you’re really green to all of this it’s a good start. I would like to point out at it is best to start this book in January or at least read through all of the exercises and do the relevant ones because as you go through the book, the exercises build on one another. I did not find most of the quotes contained in this book to be useful. I feel like it would have been better to pair the quote with some kind of exercise instead of just tossing them in willy nilly. Overall, I’d say useful for anyone who is an absolute beginner, but if you’ve already started your journey you could probably forgo this book.

Side note, the yellow pages are kind of hard to read.

I received a copy of this book to review from Callisto Publisher’s Club and Rockridge Press. Has it been on my shelf since before it was released? Yes, but I finally read it so there’s that.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A Year of Mindfulness For Beginners by Lee Papa is a neat little book if you are looking for a gift to give a friend. It is packed full of quotes, daily meditation exercises, mantras, and prompts. If you are the sort of person who finds it useful to be reminded to take time out of your day to be more mindful, this is a fantastic option for you.

That being said, I don't think this book was for me. I found a lot of the daily prompts and meditations to be unnecessarily verbose and at times, hard to follow. I wish the book had been more thoughtful with its exercises and a bit less about "think positive thoughts". But to each their own, you know?

I utilize mindfulness and was pleased to receive this book for review. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.

I found this a very inspiring useful book. The author has included meaningful quotes and daily affirmations for each reader to benefit from. I enjoyed the exercises and how the author incorporated self care as a priority .
This is a great guide for beginners yes but also for anyone that utilizes the benefits of mindfulness. It would make a great gift for anyone to use by the bedside to refer to . A very enjoyable read.

A Year of Mindfulness for Beginners is meant to be used as a daily reading. It gives thoughts, quotes, directs reflections and things to try throughout the whole book. It would be a cute gift or coffee table book. For me personally, I most likely won't use it. Maybe if it were in the form of a calendar...

Printed on heavy paper, Easy to follow. Some of the “exercises” offer a resource for more information. Those are easily found in the Resource section with websites.

A year of mindfulness in a 365 year calendar. A task, quote, thought, or an opinion that spans a year using the theory of mindfulness. Some of the tasks require writing in a journal or notebook, some just require reflection. It starts on January first, but you can probably start on whatever day you want but it’s for beginners. An easy gift or just some great grounding techniques to help you.

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review.

This book was great, yet I had one issue with. It’s not 365 prompts, but instead dated ones, which leaves one feeling like they can only start it on January 1st. At the same time, that makes it a GREAT holiday gift for someone looking to turn over a new leaf.

Definitely for Beginners. There were a few ideas I hadn't tried before but I've been meditating for like 7 or so years now. But for a beginner, probably great.

Nit picky thing. The yellow pages are hard to read.
