Love, Life, and Lucille: Lessons Learned from a Centenarian

Rate this book
Judy Gaman was so busy making a name for herself that she barely took
the time to meet a stranger, enjoy life, or simply stop to breathe.
Immersed in her job as the director of business development for a
high-profile medical practice—a job that required her to write health
and wellness books and host a nationally syndicated radio show—she spent
every day going full speed ahead with no looking back. That is, until
the day she met Lucille Fleming.

While writing a book on longevity, Judy interviewed Lucille, an elegant
and spirited woman who had just recently turned 100. Lucille had the
fashion and style of old Hollywood, but it was all hidden behind the
doors of her assisted living center. What began as a quick meeting
became a lasting friendship that transformed into an inseparable bond.
Lucille brought incredible wisdom and great stories to the table, while
Judy provided an avenue for excitement and new opportunities. Together,
the two began living life to the fullest, and meeting the most
interesting people along the way (including Suzanne Somers). But then
Lucille’s life came to an end through unexpected and unfortunate
circumstances—and the very first lesson she ever taught Judy proved to
be the most important one of all.

One thing I was determined to do for 2020, was read more non fiction. And, let me tell ya. All the ones I’ve read so far have been awesome! This one by Judy Gaman is no different. I loved this book from the start and by the end of the book, I was sitting there wanting more. That’s awesome, if you ask me! A book that will completely engulf you, keep you hooked until the last page……that’s the best kind!

This book keeps the reader laughing, tell them stories of faith and hope, between two friends. I have a sister, who is not my biological sister. She’s my absolute best friend. She is my person. The one I turn to, the one I create memories with. This book, the deeply rooted friendship that Judy and Lucille share, is exactly what I love and want. I have that with my sister. This book of memories between friends is what this world, especially during these trying times, need more of,to restore the peace.

If you want a book that will teach you about life, give you hope, make you laugh, keep you turning the pages, then definitely grab this one up. Gaman creates vivid stories that will keep you thinking, threads humor into and turns out a book that should be on every reader’s shelf! I definitely recommend this and can’t wait to read more like it! Great job, Gaman! Great job!

Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "Love, Life and Lucille" by @Judy Gaman, She Writes Press, April 14, 2020, for Suzy Approved Book Tours

Judy Gaman, author of "Love, Life, and Lucille" has written a memorable, delightful, entertaining biography and memoir that tug at your heartstrings. Judy is a workaholic, and has a wonderful second marriage with a family similar to "The Brady Bunch", Yours, Mine, and Ours".  Judy is the head of a business aspect of medical practice, has a radio program and writes,

This book is a dedication of love to a special friend, that was a centenarian, Lucille. Lucille was a vibrant, colorful, cheerful, and dramatic influence on many people, especially Judy. Judy learned many lessons in dealing with life from her senior friend. There was no age discrimination, and for a few years, there were some wonderful memories that were made.

In this book, Judy mentions the ups and downs of life, good and bad, and good health and illness.  Together, no matter what setbacks, the two set out to live life. They shared their outings in restaurants and on television, and radio. I love when the author vividly describes the food, waffles with ice-cream, or blue-berries and whipped cream.

I would highly recommend this intriguing and thought-provoking novel for readers to enjoy.

I've spent the last three hours falling in love with Lucille. Much like the author I was enchanted by her verve, vim and vigor from the moment I met her in these pages. I laughed and cried my way through the book, stopping only to Google the video of Lucille throwing the first pitch at the Rangers game (which was adorable and you should take a minute to do the same).

I desperately wanted a happy ending, for Lucille to live forever, but knew that of course that wouldn't be the case. And I guess that is the lesson of the book itself, to live in this moment, to love in this moment. To never take our loved ones for granted because today might be all we have. This is an especially timely reminder given the year we have all had.
.
.
This memoir is a love letter to Lucille's luminescence, to a life well lived, to her legacy of love.
.
.
I really loved and appreciated that the author not only signed the book with a sweet message but included a photo of her and Lucille. Look at that incredible smile!
.
.
I wish there had been photos included in the book, I especially would have loved to have seen the one of her and Suzanne.
.
.
Many thanks to @judygaman
for sharing her soul sister Lucille with us and to @katerockbooktours for the honor of reviewing this one.

Thank you to the Author for sending me a personalized copy and to Kate Rock Book Tours for inviting me to the blog tour of this beautiful memoir.

How many people do you unexpectedly cross paths with in life that become your true friend?
In her quest to write a book on aging gracefully, Judy Gaman sought to interview centenarians who could provide advice and tips on how they lived long, happy and healthy. Little did she expect to meet Lucille, a centenarian who broke every traditional norm that you would typically expect of an aging person. Lucille was always lively and the shining star that made people turn heads wherever she went. Lucille made other people feel alive in her presence.

What was supposed to originally be an interview with a centenarian turned out to be a blossoming, deep rooted friendship between the author and Lucille. Throughout their four years of friendship, the two women covered many subjects ranging from life to death, memories we create in life, the importance of small things in life etc. Some of the topics that were discussed resonated with things that happened in my mother’s and my life. The ending had me in tears, especially the final, important lesson that Lucille shares with Judy before her passing.

This is a book that my review could render no justice. You have to savor every page yourself. There is no time like now to read this book when everything feels chaotic and unsettling. Be prepared to laugh, cry, think deep and come out feeling hopeful and optimistic. This book gets riveting 5 stars from me!!!

Great book! Reminded me very much of Fried Green Tomatoes. I was able to stop and consider much of Lucille’s life lessons and relate them to my own life. The book felt like it had two distinct parts: the first half being fancy lunch dates and adventures with Lucille, the second half quite depressing with hospitalization and her end times. Makes me want to cherish every moment with my mom and be sure to take care of her every need as she ages- gracefully of course!

This book is as charming as its cover. It somewhat makes me want to grow up to be like Lucille, a colorful energetic unforgettable centenarian. Lucille bestowed her valuable gift of friendship on the author, Judy Gaman, who became equally precious to the charismatic Lucille. Judy and her readers learn invaluable lessons from Lucille’s repertoire of wisdom.

Lucille had a child-like enthusiasm for meeting new acquaintances, surprises, adventures, and delectable dishes. She appreciated and savored the various inviting restaurants where Judy treated her. During each of their dining experiences you vicariously drink in the restaurant’s ambience and relish the simpatico vibes between the two women while they eat and chat.

Judy became so close to Lucille that after Lucille had a physical setback, Judy had Lucille recover in her sumptuous guestroom. Lucille was thankful for the hospitality—but objected to Judy’s overprotectiveness. One of the times you witness Lucille’s mischievous side is one night when Judy checked up on her. “Boo!” yelled Lucille, after which she giggled and said, “Look at me. I’m dead…. You have to stop checking on me like this. I’m fine.”

Sadly, all good things come to an end, and so did Lucille’s life. This tear-jerker part covers three weeks before Lucille would have become one-hundred and four. She said, “This is no life…if it’s my time to go to Heaven, I can.” Two days later she did.

I’m thankful to Judy Gamen for enabling me to get to know Lucille, even though it was only on paper and a couple of televised stints which Judy coordinated.

I like the idea of this book. Essentially, the plot intends to be sharing wisdom from a woman who lived to be over 100 years old. Awesome. Except the authors writing just didn’t do it for me. It sounded like the style of writing I did when I was in middle school and I thought my writing was so clever. But I can get past that, whatever, it’s all good.
My problems come with the authors clear boomer mentality and that irks me so much. How many times did she have to mention she hates tattoos? And her reason for it is so dumb. Then toward the end, she describes two young women coming out of a staff meeting at the assisted living facility as “hoodlums” because they had shirts styled with cuts in the back and tattoos. But later, she talks to a woman with tattoos and “wasn’t scared”, she also touched them! Gasp! Did she think tattoos are contagious or….?
OH and don’t forget describing another woman with tattoos and essentially saying “maybe she went through a tough time and couldn’t deal with her emotions so she got a tattoo! Mistakes happen when you’re hurting! so you wouldn’t have gotten that tattoo otherwise.” 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

She also “wasn’t raised religious” but then after 3 people said they prayed for her, by golly, now she’s religious!!!! But then you remember she’s non-Texan-turned-”forth worth area of DFW” and then it all makes sense. The one extra star is for her mention of Al Biernat’s, which is a great steakhouse in Dallas.

I was hoping this book would be more about Lucille’s life and experiences, not something Lucille said that somehow tied to the authors life. It was hard for me to get through, but I refuse to DNF a book so I got it done.

The book begins with Judy, who is writing a book on longevity, and Lucille, who is one of the people over 100 years old that Judy interviews for her book, meet and begin a special friendship. Judy and Lucille form a bond and Judy then decides to write a book about Lucille and her life.
This begins their standard Friday dates where the two have a connection that unites the ladies even though they are decades in age apart.
As Lucille tells her stories, Judy is able to really dissect her own feelings of growing up in a one parent household with a workaholic mom and a dad that lived many states away. She also learns to simplify and appreciate her life as she spends time with Lucille.
This book is just fantastic- it is uplifting and even though as you can imagine with a 104 woman, the book does end when Lucille’s journey on earth does (go ahead and grab your tissue box) it is such a wonderful journey of the past, present and future uniting.
I love the descriptions of the restaurants where they eat and the meals they choose on their Friday dates. I also love the descriptions of each outfit that Lucille is wearing at each of these outings.
I had so many favorite chapters and want to at least highlight a few. I loved the chapter where Judy and Lucille shop for wigs before their standard Friday lunch. The chapter where Lucille goes to Judy’s house and she teaches Judy and her girls how to make an apple pie was also a favorite.
Enjoy this book and learn to appreciate those that are older and wiser!

Love, Life and Lucille

This book is about hope, friendship and positivity. It is the sweetest book I have read in a long time. The cherry on the cake is that it is actually a true story and memoir of the author, Judy Gaman!

The story is about Judy, a career-oriented woman in her forties, living with her loving husband and juggling day to day jobs like most of us do. She decides to write a book about life longevity and interviews Lucille, a 100 year old woman, who is full of life and energy, and enjoying every moment of her life. From that day, develops a deep friendship between the two, each encouraging and uplifting each other, with Judy learning the secrets of a happy fulfilled life from Lucille.

Lucille was a ball of energy! She would wake up and dress up in vibrant outfit, with matching flower and accessories. She would enjoy the little things in life – be it a dessert on the menu or a sunny day. We all need someone like Lucille in our lives, especially when we are feeling down, to remind us that life is precious and should be lived to the fullest. Instead of waiting for the big things, Lucille taught me that we should enjoy what we have every day. As I read this book, I created an image of Lucille based on her description. Later I saw her photos on @judygaman official page and they are the sweetest! Head over to her page if you are curious!

I would rate this book 4 stars out of 5 and would recommend you to get hold of a copy!

Judy set out to write a book of a person over 100 years old. Emily, Judy's assistant, finds Lucille. What ends up happening is the book is written about Lucille but a very strong 4 year friendship comes out of it.

Lucille will show Judy that it's ok to slow down and enjoy life instead of always being on the go. Judy will show Lucille many great adventures in the world.

I wish I had been able to be friends with Lucille too! She had such a zeal for life. She was always positive. She taught so many great lessons to the people in her life. I love the friendship that Judy and Lucille were able to have. They certainly were two peas in a pod!

Lucille was always so fancily dressed, I loved reading about her various outfits! I looked the various places they went for their Friday lunches.

I'm so grateful for katerockbooktours for letting me read this story. I know a sweet lady (a family friend) that is 107 right now and I knew from knowing her that I wanted to read this. This was such a beautiful tribute to a wonderful lady written but an equally wondeful lady!

Side note: look up Lucille throws out the first pitch for the Texas Rangers video on YouTube. It's really sweet and special and I'm glad I found it!

What a wonderful, amazing story. Everyone should be so lucky as to have a Lucille in their life, if only for a brief time. As I read the story of how Judy met Lucille and their growing friendship, I laughed and oh did I cry. In every page you could just see Judy’s love for Lucille grow and Lucille’s for Judy. You could just tell how much their Friday outings meant to the both of them. Between Judy’s fight with her illness and Lucille's eventual decline in health, you will just have all the feels. I highly recommend this book, just have several boxes of tissues handy!

Thank you so much to Suzy’s Approved Book Tours and Judy Gaman for the review copy of this book. It is one I will both treasure

Probably the most touching, heart-warming, emotional stories I’ve read in a very long time. Be sure to have a box of tissues beside you and make no plans for the day because as soon as you start, you will not put this down until it’s completed.
Lucille Fleming had just turned 100 years old when Judy Gaman met her. What began as an interview on longevity turned into a lasting friendship. These two women developed such a strong, inseparable bond. Lucille shared her stories, wisdom, and life lessons and Judy shared experiences. Lucille’s story will stay with you for a very long time. Such a feel good story. It’s the kind of story that feels like home. I highly recommend you pick up a copy today!! Thank you @katerockbooktours for including me on Lucille’s journey.

Lucille taught us all that we should dream and dream big.

Have you ever just wanted to hug a book because you loved it that much? This is the book for you then. 😀 Part biography, part memoir we learn about the life and friendship between the author and Lucille, an over 100 year old spunky lady.

What started as an interview turned into an amazing friendship as they duo lived life to the fullest in the last few years of Lucilles life. This book was full of adventures (I loved the part of Lucille getting to throw the 1st pitch for her favorite team), laughter, heartbreak and hope.

If you’re looking for an upbeat, hug in a book I highly recommend this one. I’ve been reading it slowly, chapter by chapter over the last month and savoring the lessons shared. I hope you get to experience it too.

I had an aunt who lived to be 99 and this book could have easily been written about her. There are many flaws in the book, however. It probably needed a better editing job and the monotony of a lunch on Friday, another fancy hotel buffet, a description of Lucille’s outfit, the same reactions from the people she encountered, make for an uninspiring read. I had higher hopes for this book. Although I was familiar with many of the locations and name droppings, it just didn’t keep my interest.

Loved reading this account of lessons learned from 100 yo friend. How special that these ladies found one another and built love and friendship in spite of many years separating them! I had to keep reminding myself that Lucille was a real woman and actually existed as described ! What a joy to grow old and be loved like that!

From the beginning, Judy Gaman has you falling in love with Lucille, a spunky & glamorous lady who changes her life for the better. Her interview with Lucille, which starts out as research for a book, turns into much more. She made a lifelong friend that she needed to appreciate life. We should enjoy the time we have while we are here. Lucille does just that and brings Judy along for the ride. What a lovely tribute to an impressive lady. Lucille will not be forgotten and this story will tug on your heartstrings. Have some tissue nearby.
