Robert is a pet, a human pleasure slave, and well past his prime.
So when teenage Duke Thomar of Aylian buys him via mail order, Robert first suspects a dreadful misunderstanding. The duke is young, handsome and headstrong, and the very last thing he needs while struggling to secure his reign over his planet is an aging bargain bin pet by his side.
Only, the more time Robert spends with Thomar, the more he learns that the young duke rarely makes mistakes. Unless, of course, Thomar dashes off on one of his mad adventures, which Robert increasingly becomes a part of…
‘The Pet and his Duke’ is a standalone m/m romance novel in the ‘Virasana Empire’ universe. Written by Rainbow Book Award winners Beryll and Osiris Brackhaus, it is a story of self-determination and love, and Happily-Ever-Afters in the most unlikely places. Warning: contains slavery, non-con and lots of fluff.
In theory, this book appealed to me. I read the blurb and signed up to read it immediately. I loved the idea of an older protagonist and the idea of a far-flung space empire with its own set of rules and mores. Unfortunately, several things fell apart in the execution, and overall, this book didn’t work for me.
Stylistically, the book didn’t quite come together. The language that the authors used felt strange and almost juvenile at times (adorable, cute, sexy, and awesome were the most common adjectives). The chapters read like a series of vignettes instead of a cohesive plot. On top of that, the chapters themselves had an odd narrative structure: it would open with a statement about how Robert couldn’t believe what had happened, followed by several pages of pluperfect exposition about what had happened to set up a problem, and then concluding with a return to the regular past tense to resolve the problem.
The plot of the novel overall centered around Robert, the pet, becoming more self-assured and a person in his own right, He realizes that his master genuinely cares about him and wouldn’t sell him again. However, this transformation still didn’t give Robert much of a personality. His personality traits seemed to more defined by the situation than his character itself. When the scene required a sacrifice, Robert became a martyr; when the scene required someone to speak up, Robert became brave; when the scene required a hero, suddenly Robert could pick up and aim a blaster toward dangerous enemies.
Before the book, the authors provided a few warnings about the objectionable content of the book (rape, violence, etc.). More than the warning, I wanted the authors to use these heavier plot points in a more meaningful way. Sexual violence has a home in this universe, it seems almost a way of life, but overall the authors use rape and torture as a way for the main character to show how much he’ll undergo for his master and, once the chapter is over, Robert never seems to think about the days of intense torture that he endures. Not even a whiff of PTSD or permanent physical damage, which trivializes the topics to me.
Occasionally, the author would give hints of an incredibly interesting world and characters but never elaborate on them. The planet on which Robert and Thomar reside is below a portal to a realm of demons ruled by a god-like empress. Fascinating. However, we get little from this other than a few unnamed characters and one demon, Lady Karr, who might be the best part of the book.
Lady Karr stands out as the one character who isn’t sexualized in some way or another, which in a way gives her the most personality. She has more presence than a lot of the other secondary characters and takes up a position as one of Robert’s friends. She’s also the first person to recognize that Robert has real value to Thomar and uses that to her advantage, to secure a home for her court of demons. I could have read an entire book about the polite, clever, and genuine Lady Karr trying to navigate the culture and politics of the Virasana Empire.
The book does contain a lot of fluff and sex and ends on a nearly impossibly happy note. A happy ending, at least, I can always appreciate. I only wish I’d really wanted it for the characters. I think if the authors had spent more time developing a few more key points of the plot rather than filling the novel with one-off adventures that hardly tied together, this story might have really stood out as a fun and interesting space adventure.
The Pet and His Duke is set in the world of the Virasana Empire and, while you don’t have to have read the Sir Yaden books to follow the story, reading the first in that series, The Demon of Hagermarsh, might help with some of the background world building. It’s really your choice and The Pet and His Duke can be read as a standalone. Trigger warning — there are mentions of rape and abuse on page, so please be aware.
Robert and Thomar are both interesting characters, though neither have as much complexity as I would like. They fit well together and Thomar’s acceptance of Robert as a person rather than a pet gives their relationship a much needed equality. The authors play with role reversals and power exchange between Robert and Thomar and, while again these encounters to lack a measure of depth, they still feel in character for both men.
DNF @ 20% Based on the foreword, this was originally posted online before being published, and it reads like it. Not in an objectively bad way, there are just things in online serial fiction that don't work as well in a book. Sometimes information is repeated in consecutive chapters as if it was something the reader read weeks or months ago, rather than just ten minutes ago. The vignette-style chapters felt disjointed to me and didn't give me enough momentum to get emotionally invested. There are also time skips between the chapters that made me feel like I missed out on seeing some important interactions, like their first time having sex and Robert settling into his new life. This story structure just isn't working for me, and the characters and their relationship isn't holding my interest.
I'm still deciding how to rate and review this one. The premise was fascinating and there were so many points that grabbed me. And some points felt a little disjointed. I'm deciding if I wanted more or less to bring it all together. Regardless, I have a new hero in Lady Karr. Full review soon on the blog and then here.
**a copy of this story was provided for an honest review**
There is no coherent plot to this. It is just a series of vingettes that are barely connected with both massive info dumping and at the same time telling rather than showing what's going on. It could have been an interesting power dynamic with Robert and the Duke but I am 50% in and just dont care what happens to either of them at all.
At thirty-eight, Robert has been sold many many times as a pet. And here he is, again a new master, sold through mail order for god sake. His master is twenty years younger, Robert knows for sure, when the novelty fades he will be passed on to some other master, he’s no longer desirable as he uses to be.
Thomar is the youngest Duke ever and quite unconventional. Robert wants to please him desperately and he has even hope, hope of a future.
Being young and venturous brings them both in quite some extraordinary and at times dangerous situations. His master has openly sexual encounters with others, Robert feels at times kind of jealous, but he’s just his pet, isn't he. Various events can be found, a sabotaged marriage, imposters, kidnappings, fake titles, declarations of feelings, gaining ultimate power, infiltrating and, stunning creatures. Extraordinary solutions to problems, who costs problem. Thomar has a strong connection toward Robert and even T'lark the N'Ptalini is more and more smitten by Robert.
These authors created a wonderful magical planetarium. Good to visualize, a lot to see and to take in. The realms were creative and with a thrilling adventurous atmosphere. The bond between master and pet was strong. A lot of variety to find like sweetness, ruthlessness, playfulness, sexiness, dedication, jealousy, friendship, and ahhh love, that is free spirit love, oh and... books! A very dynamic narrative with a great plot, captivating and entertaining, all enchantingly and excellently written. A winner !
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Yes, there was torture, but it was mentioned in passing and not dwelt on in loving detail. We also got two bonus stories, introducing us to the original Alain and telling us how T'lark became Thomar's bodyguard.
I plan to keep this on my phone and reread it again soon. It's very well worth the time, and I highly recommend it.
No rating DNF. This just wasn't for me. I wanted to see more of how the Duke and Pet's relationship developed, and I just didn't get much of that. The writing also felt a bit... amateur? Describing the duke as "cute" just didn't fit with the setting and overall vibes of the book.
REVIEWED BY ULYSSES DIETZ MEMBER OF THE PARANORMAL GUILD REVIEW TEAM This fourth book in the Virasana Empire series from the inimitable Brackhauses is not part of the Sir Yaden series, but a stand-alone novel with all sorts of tangential connections that keep making the reader (at least this one) say “ah!” Aside from its own epic romance – between Thomar Quetzal, the youngest Duke in the empire, and his slave ‘pet’ Robert – the book offers a delicious and often disturbing look at the morally ambiguous notion of “good” in Virasana’s incredibly complex cultures.
The peculiar interest and challenge of Duke Thomar’s rule is that he is (1) a teenager still, and (2) the Duke of Aylian, a planet that is directly below a recently opened portal between Virasana and another dimension. The young duke must negotiate the violent and complicated politics of a war-torn planet while capitalizing on the wealth potential of a whole new universe of demons hungry for Virasana’s culture, goods and services.
We get something of a deep dive into the Quetzal family, the most badass of all the great noble families in Virasana, whose emperor (the Good Emperor) is himself a Quetzal. And, of course, Sir Yaden of the Lotus Knights is a Quetzal. We have, however, been repeatedly told unpleasant things about the Quetzal nobles, including their inclination to sadistic sex and use of assassination as a political tool (the way you and I use the ‘delete’ button on our computers). In this book, we learn exactly how true all these terrible things are; but we also get very close to Thomar Quetzal, who both embodies and defies everything we have been told about his family.
Honestly, I think Beryll and Osiris Brackhaus purposely design their plot points to make me squirm. They’re really good at it.
Robert – who never has a surname – is an ageing ‘pet,’ which is the Virasana Empire’s euphemism for ‘sex slave.’ The teenaged Duke Thomar Quetzal purchases him through a cheap mail-order catalogue – because Robert is forty years old and has been sold and resold more times than he can remember since he himself was a pretty teenaged boy. We don’t quite understand why Thomar purchases Robert in the first place – and the gradual discovery of Thomar’s reasons becomes one of the subtexts of the entire, outrageous, episodic narrative of Robert’s life as Thomar’s pet.
Americans know all about slavery and its consequences (or should), but in this archaic-futuristic world slavery is a business like luxury fashion, and such a deeply-rooted custom that it is no more questioned than is the existence of the arrogant, selfish nobles who have all the power and most of the wealth in the empire.
Darios in the first book is a failed gladiator, and is purchased for the child Yaden by his parents when they discover he has huge superpowers – and think having a slave to teach and care for him will help. Robert is a very specific kind of slave, and a second strong subtext in the story is the sex life of Virasana nobles. It is fascinating and, I repeat, disturbing by turns. What saves this book from being a total creep-fest for me is the fact that Thomar is different in critical ways from other nobles in Virasana, something that Robert himself, as narrator, reveals to the reader as he discovers it for himself.
The authors warn the readers at the start of the book that the values of the people of the Virasana Empire are not like our values here and now (although I wonder these days). In particular, Robert’s attitude about his own status is never based on the idea that someday he’ll be free. After talking to a young pet belonging to another noble, and remembering himself as a young slave, he makes the sad comment: “there was no such thing as hope for a pet, there was only dull acceptance of whatever fate dealt to you.”
The romantic ending that the Brackhauses promise us is there – but it’s not quite what we might expect, and by the time you’ve read this book, you’ll understand exactly why and appreciate it all the more.
Though I've never read a book by these authors before, I was very intrigued by the description and decided to give the story a try. The book wasn’t quite what I expected but I did, for the most part, enjoy it. The description gives the warnings of slavery (which there was), dub con (which there was), and lots of fluff (though there was some, it wasn’t quite as lighthearted as I’d hoped despite the previous warnings).
Let’s start with the parts of the book that I enjoyed: the authors are very skilled at world building without overwhelming the reader. I feel like I was able to understand the environment that the characters lived in without being bogged down with unnecessary details. I also enjoyed the development of the relationship between the two main characters, at how the Duke was very protective over Robert and how Robert would look after the Duke. Though the relationship wasn’t really the traditional romance that I’ve come to expect from an m/m romance novel, it did work well within the constraints of the world that the characters existed within.
The things that I didn’t enjoy. I didn’t care for the Duke being with other people sexually during the story. I’ve come to expect that in a m/m romance there will be a sexual relationship just between the main characters, especially if they are starting to develop an intimate relationship together, unless the description mentions that there is multiple partners. Just a personal preference of mine and something that threw me off a little during the course of the story; other readers might enjoy these parts of the story. I also had a hard time with the flow of the story as each chapter seemed to be its own little story or adventure rather than each chapter building on the last one to resolve a main conflict or head towards a character’s goal. The stories did manage to hold my interest but I felt like there might have been a bigger pay off emotionally at the end of the story if there had been a common goal that the characters were working towards.
This is my first book by the Brackhaus couple, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was an interesting concept - the book is almost like a collection of short stories, with some overarching themes. It follows the adventures of Robert, an aging pet (nice word for sex slave), and his new owner, the 18 year old ruler of the planet, Thomar.
Robert's story was heartwrenching, although he was very matter-of-fact about it. He was a slave with zero rights, and he was totally dependent on his owner. If the owner was good for him, great, but if he was mistreated or abused, there was absolutely nothing he could do about it but endure. The fact that he shows so little emotion about it, actually made it worse, in my opinion.
He was bought by the young Duke, and for once he had an owner that treated him with kindness, respect and dignity. Through the book, the bond between Thomar and Robert deepened, until it was a proper love match, and I loved it. My only critique is that, for all the themes of sex slaves and what not, it was actually very low heat, with all the action happening off page. Sometimes it felt like more telling and less showing, and I wanted the developing love between Thomar and Robert to be all show.
The world-building in this book was amazing, and if this book have any sequels, sign me up!! I look forward to read more books set in this universe. It is a proper space opera, but with MM romance, so I am very excited. I am super glad I discovered these books!!
Enjoyed a lot at first but after a while it began reading like a series of vignettes in their life rather than a flowing storyline. At that point I became less invested and kept putting it aside so it took me a while to read.
This is the second Virasana Empire story I’ve read, and I loved the references to the overall world and its characters. The authors have built a detailed world with a rich tapestry of descriptions and history, which is populated with interesting characters, and I’m looking forward to reading more. I must admit I was very happy at the appearance of one of the Lotus Knights.
I loved Robert and Thomar’s story, which is so much more than the title suggests. I liked how the wording in that title hints at the clever twist in the trope. Robert and Thomar’s relationship is never that of a typical master and pet, and I enjoyed watching them slowly build a friendship and more. I became invested in their story very quickly.
Robert in particular grows a lot in this story, from a pet who will do whatever it takes to survive, to someone who is able to feel comfortable in his own persona, and making a difference in the lives to those around him. As the story progresses it’s very obvious he and Thomar love each other, even without the words. Thomar isn’t the same person at the end of the story that he is at the beginning either. He matures a lot, and being with Robert is good for him.
I loved Alain, the demon puppy. Cute, yet deadly. T’ark is a wonderful character too. I’d love to read more from his perspective and learn more about him.
The plot is interesting with its own twists along the way, with several edge of seat action scenes. I also loved the friendship between Thomar and Ekai. I hope Ekai’s adventures get told at some point. The final showdown with the thorn in their side didn’t go the way I thought it would. Wow. Go Robert!
Although the ending isn’t the conventional HEA, I thought it was perfect for Robert and Thomar, and for all the reasons Robert makes.
This was okay. It took me about 3 weeks to read. It wasn’t necessarily that it wasn’t interesting, but more so that I found it didn’t have much of a plot. It felt very episodic in how it was written, with each chapter being a mini arc, with a conflict and resolution in every chapter. It did make it easy to put down and not have to worry about forgetting what happened when I went to go pick it up again after a few days.
I wouldn’t say that I actually found it overly exciting until about the 75% mark, but again, conflict was resolved within that chapter.
I was surprised at how little sex there is in a book about a pleasure slave. What sex did happen was more so inferred, or if it was on page, it was told as a recollection as opposed to happening in the present.
A caveat to those who prefer monogamy in their romance novels, these two have sex with others in the book.
This is a difficult case of the story simply not being my cup of tea.
This story does not hide what it is, right in the title is the fact that it is about a pet. The whole idea of being trained to be this sexual servant is difficult to swallow but can lead to some truly intriguing stories. This one was definitely intriguing, but also just a bit too graphic and dark. There is a lot of sexual torture and actual torture that simply feels a step too far, especially with how much of the story it was. It also felt that there really wasn't a driving plot moving the story forward, just a new sexual exploit each chapter. It can be story of interest but personally it wasn't one that I could connect with
I have loved the world (and universe) building and characters by these two since they started on LJ. I love Robert and Thomar and the cameos by Leesha, Wesley and the Knights. This is a great set of stories, so diverse and well done. And steamy!
I received an ARC copy if this book. I laughed, I cried and I gasped. This book is the perfect curl up on a Sunday afternoon with a cup of copy book. I can't recommend it enough.
This title was so much fun! Such a delightful romp of a Sci-fantasy MM romance. It's a standalone story with a HEA connected to a series but I read it quite easily a a standalone. The story has length so it's great if you like long ones like I do. May-December type age gap.
Aaaa - what a complete surprise to find a new favourite by sheer accident! So glad I found it, I enjoyed it hugely! 1 clicked 2 more already!
These two are delicious, a delight to read. Love the descriptions, personalities, writing style and the way plot moved and that it described a longer period of time. Just Wow. Drying tears of laughter while reading some parts. Fits my taste and sense of humour so well.
Recommended especially to fellow Sci-Fantasy Romance fans.
Trigger warnings: - Cheating. In this story cheating is socially acceptable in the laid out framework. It's not about some love triangle dramas like in many contemporary titles. Still as some detest any reference to cheating and want to avoid books with any mention of it, it should be mentioned. - Description of violence, torture - The relationship described here is that of slave and master which may be unacceptable to some
I liked the world building more than the romance. Both Robert, the aging pet, a sort of sex slave, and Thomar, the young Duke were interesting, but the book was oddly paced. Some of the chapters/incidents felt like outlines to me, waiting to be fleshed out. A lot of things happened off paged and were just skimmed over, when they could have better been explored within the book. Some of the writing was frankly not good, and even the good bits were underwritten. But the world building was engrossing enough that I would look for more by these authors. I just think this read like a good first draft and by third draft it could be excellent. So lots of unrealized potential.
This would not normally have been my choice of reading but I really did like it. Robert, an older pet is bought by mail and delivered to an 18 year ols Duke. Robert has had many masters and didnt know what to expect. I enjoyed how Robert became a man thinking for himself and also his relationship with the Duke. They had lots of adventures together and there was a nice secondary cast of characters.only niggle was I had trouble trying to decide how some of the names were pronounced. I hope we might get a follow up with these 2.
ENG- So well well well... well I really like the Virasana Empire series of these two authors but I must admit that when I saw that their next novel would not be volume 4 but another novel in the same universe, I was a little disappointed. The previous novels were soft sex level with very few sex scenes (see not at all) so I was not sure what to expect when I read the summary of this novel.
And I was not disappointed. I loved this novel. I felt like I had the adult version of a teen series. I really had a great time reading. I found all the elements that I like in this series with novelties that I really liked.
I really liked the characters. Whether it is Robert who is very engaging and really touching or Thomar who is very intriguing and really interesting. He is an extremely strong character, who has experienced several trials in his life and who faces them with strength and intelligence. He is very good at the politics of his planet or the empire. He knows how to surround himself with good people and play the game of different parts for the good of his planet and his people. He may be very young, he is a strong and powerful character.
The novel takes place over several years which gives us time to see the relationship between Robert and Thomar develop. If Thomar evolves because of his young age at the beginning of the novel, it is also the case of Robert.
The novel is from Robert's point of view and we are bound to be very attached to it. At the beginning of the novel he was at a fairly difficult stage in his life and I liked seeing him regain hope and the joy of living over the pages. His relationship with Thomar is very beautiful and I took great pleasure in reading this novel.
There is a lot going on, there are a lot of twists and turns and new elements throughout the novel. I really loved everything that is going on in this novel. Whether by finding the elements of other novels (the universe, the different "creatures" the atmosphere) or the new elements that are really catchy.
So compared to other novels in the same series there is a lot of sex. For my greatest pleasure. The sex scenes are not necessarily very explicit, but the authors manage to create a delightfully hot atmosphere. I really appreciated this aspect of the novel which is central without being too present.
The authors manage to perfectly balance the action, romance, sex, political intrigue scenes for our greatest pleasure.
In summary, a surprising novel in this series but still as good. A small "gift" from the authors which gives us another vision of this universe and makes us have a great time.
Robert is a past his prime slave, or as he's called in the book, a pet. He has had many masters, been used to please not only his master, but entire parties as well. Being a pet you have no say in what gets done to you, who you are sold off to, no freedoms at all. Robert is determined to be the best pet possible, in hopes of finding a master who will keep him, but also to avoid punishment. Thomar is a very young Duke who didn't want the responsibility of becoming a Duke. In order to attempt to make life more bearable in his new role, Thomar buys Robert. Robert is convinced that this young Duke will tire of him soon, and then he'll be sold off to someone else. Thomar however, he seems to see something in Robert, and their lives become crazy from there. Thomar is always up to something and dragging Robert into his "adventures" as well. Robert is most definitely not used to this, and finds himself very intrigued by his new master. This story is full of danger, torture, non-con, evil creatures, and I'm pretty sure none of them have heard of the word monogamy. There were lots of moments during the story that I found myself laughing. I really enjoyed the friendship Robert gains from one of the guards. And when the relationship between Thomar and Robert grows, and there's no extras involved, I thought they were amazing together. I did not like that Thomar continually was intimate with others, and felt the same on the few occasions Robert was with someone besides Thomar. This is just my feelings towards it though, I enjoy stories where the characters are in a polyamorous relationship, but that was not what this was. Thomar and Robert fell in love with each other, their feelings toward the other were incredible, but stepping outside their relationship just took away some of that specialness. Because this was simple a matter of personal preference, I refuse to give a lower rating than the creativeness and writers deserves. If monogamy is an absolute must for you, then this book isn't for you. If you have triggers, especially sexual assault triggers, THIS book is NOT for you. If those things aren't deal breakers for you, then give this book a try.
The story followed Robert a 40+ Pet Slave and his new Master young Duke Thomar in Adult teen.
It is a story of two men trapped in their respective lives, and it starts with Robert being shipped off to his new master on another planet. He is surprised to find out his new Master is so young and is convinced that there is a mistake in the paper work.
Duke Thomar, is wiser then his years well most of the time, I think he chose Robert as a slave, because he wanted someone wise, reliable and mature to comfort him and to confide in.
They soon click and become friends and this is unsettling to Robert who is used to more strict and regimental Masters. He is constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I did say Thomar was mature beyond his years most of the time, and when he is not he leads himself and Robert on some interesting adventures, which are thrilling and scary for poor Robert at the same time.
We watch them break down the divides between them and society rules, as the lines between them blur, until it is obvious that they are deeply in love with each other.
I really enjoyed this book, it has a uplifting feel to it and puts a smile on your face. Don’t get me wrong its not always smiles, as they have enemies that are out to topple the Duke.
The message I took from the story is not to assume you know what type of person is by their title, name, background or any other descriptive details.
I think the author did a wonderful job of bringing a full and vivid world to life. The pacing was just right and your always wanting to read just one more page.
I will certainly be reading more from this author, who was new to me.
It's always a treat to read those books by two of my favourite authors. And this one was no exception.
Robert is an ageing pet who was sold to a new master. Curiously enough it's the Duke of the planet Aylian, Thomar, who is eager to get a pet who is more knowledgable than him in the bedroom department. It does not take long for those two to develop an interesting relationship in which first a friendship grows and then love that is being taken to a whole new level. If you do not want to read about slavery and such a deep-seated trust that it does not matter for the two main characters to go to bed with other people (trust me, you want to read that, just for the benefit of having a broader way of thinking), stay away, but all the other people who are eager to broaden their mindset and to see what two really talented authors can do with an awesome setting in a well developed fantastical world should get their copy ASAP! ;)
In this universe slavery is legal and pets come in every shape and colour to satisfy your heart’s desire. This story follows a mature pet who dares to still dream about a master who might actually keep him for good.
A young Duke wrapped in political dramas, court intrigue and assassination plots becomes the pets new owner.
There’s a fair amount of lead up before things really start to happen but the story moves swiftly after that. Both men get into their share of trouble and the steam bits are funny, plentiful and sometimes romantic. What’s not to love about swine swinging?!
There is one question about a dead Barroness that I couldn’t figure out (why she had to die) but as the author has more books in the Virasana Empire the answer may present itself in another book.
I really enjoyed this, Robert and Thomar were wonderfully complex characters. Both trapped within the confines of their stations, Robert as a slave and Thomar as a duke. I loved seeing Robert learn to be himself while remaining unapologetically Thomar's pet. The storyline was surprisingly engaging considering that it read more like a collection of adventures laid out in a linear fashion, somehow it just worked and I found myself finishing well after 3 in the morning because I couldn't put it down. An altogether brilliant read.
*I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book*
I love the pet system with an older male character paired with a younger, dominant, male character. I was curious why someone so young would be interested in an older pet. Fun read. Each chapter is something new to look forward to. The ending is so sweet and makes sense for Robert. I wonder about their future together.
This book was so good that I am looking for the list that I can add this book to. I enjoyed it immensely. It was a rolling adventure. It was filled with unexpected occurrences. It was enjoyable. It was more than a roller coaster ride. It was a rocket ship to the stars. I enjoyed every single moment. I will do it again.
This was really a love story that was broken into linked short stories about the misadventures of an older love pet and his much younger master. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
