What a wonderful collection of stories! It was great seeing all the little things that Harry did alongside the big aventures of the full-size novels. Some of them sweet and simple and others feel like they could’ve been a book of their own. Still, every story offered something great to enjoy.
Even though this series is anything but short, I’m still sad to have finished it. So many great aventures in so many great stories that I would never get sick of and will always be returning to.
Of the two supplemental lost years volumes this was the best, the dead move slow being my favourite story. The antagonist of that story was particularly interesting. Bit of a strange note to complete the entire series with if you’re reading/listening in order of release. Technically in world the chronological ending is book 3 of the e-branch trilogy. Cool thing about the Necroscope saga is that there’s several orders of reading that each have their own merits. If I go back I’ll probably follow the in world chronological order and have the lost years all together, despite how that might detract from the main narrative.
First we have, Dead Eddy, Harry Keogh “ the Necroscope” decides to take a break and have some fun for once, Las Vegas, Harry decides to play the slots and who better to help him than one of the “ Great Majority” Dead Eddy, a man whose job, in life, was to maintain the slot machines so he knows all the tricks. The perfect guide and teacher for Harry, you would think. But there’s something Eddy is not telling Harry and it’s something that could cause Harry to get into a lot of trouble. The Mobius Murders Harry Keogh is using his Mobius Route ( his means of travel by which he can go instantly from one place to another) one day when he sees something he has trouble believing. A body goes tumbling past him, where no other human should be, following behind Harry realises the body is deceased. The answer to what has happened is too horrifying for words, someone else has discovered how to use the Mobius Continum only they are not a force for good like Harry but are a murderer and are using the Continum to dispose of the bodies. What this man could do with his talent does not bear thinking about, fortunately he is as yet unskilled, so Harry must find him and deal with him before the situation gets any worse. For The Dead Travel Slowly The creepiest of the stories, there’s an evil thing in the woods, it’s been there for millennia feeding on helpless humans who fall into its trap. But things are getting desperate, the thing is ready to reproduce, it just needs one more big feed and it will be ready. But Harry can sense the souls of its victims and is drawn to investigate. There’s also the fiancée of his last victim determined to find it and kill it. This is one time where Harry for all his skills will need all the help he can get. Old Man With a Blade The Grim Reaper runs into Harry Keogh Resurrection Harry has a nightmare.
I first learned about The Necroscope books back in 1993. I was working at a book store so there was so much to read. So many excellent writers who were veterans from Sci Fi to High adverture and Fantasy. Oh, and yes, Horror and the Macabre. Harry Keogh fit all the qualities I'd been looking for in a great book hero. This was a kick ass Brit who you dont mess with. Ever since then I cannot get enough of the Necroscope adventures and every couple of years I revisit the books. Now I got them all on Kindle which gives me an excuse to read them again. I highly recommend these books to all those readers that are not squeemish when it comes to horror stories and are looking for a good vampire saga and a great hero. Happy reading!
