Jastine Chase was a soldier. An elite soldier. Trained from childhood by her special forces father to be the best at surveillance, tradecraft, survival, and combat. She was trained to be a Delta operator. Unfortunately for Jastine, the Army wasn’t ready for a woman of her talents.
Recently separated from the Army, Jastine is trying to find her way with a skill set that is not exactly suited for life on her family ranch. She misses the action, the camaraderie, and the purpose of the Army.
That’s when her old Master Sergeant, Jerry, calls her. He runs a personal protection firm and needs a woman like Jastine for a job. A job that could insure the future of his company.
Richard K Fox (1975 - to hopefully another 40 something years) was born in Phoenix, Arizona and that is about where the normal tale of a childhood ended. He spent a large portion of his early years up and down the Southern California coast and central Arizona... Ok, I'm switching to first person because this is weird...
I switched schools frequently as a child due to moving and being bounced from one parent to another. The only time I had any real stability was in the early years. At some point I got tired of finding new friends and then moving on, so I started to hang out in the library and read anything that looked interesting. That is where I found my love for science fiction, fantasy, and fiction in general.
My imagination has always been strong, but reading books like The Lord of The Rings, A Wizard of Earthsea, Starship Troopers, and Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series really threw it into overdrive. Throw in authors like Stephen King and Dean Koontz and I developed an appreciation of various styles and genre.
Fast forward 20+ years past the military and multiple careers, and I have finally found the courage to publish my own stories. I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay) and spend my time writing, consulting, and practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. My anticipated projects will primarily focus on LitRPG, Thrillers & Urban Fantasy as these are the three genre I love reading the most.
This is a short novella introducing readers to the Jastine Chase Thriller series and follows Jastine as she is recruited by a personal protection security company run by her old Master Sergeant Jerry, from her stint as a special forces Delta Operator. She was trained from childhood to be the best at combat, surveillance, tradecraft and survival, by her Special Forces father and followed his example and joined the army. But after some eight years of service, the army didn’t really want her anymore and they parted company. It has only been a few months since she left the army, but she is already missing the close camaraderie and action she got in the armed services. This new job offer has come at just the right time, as her family’s ranch doesn’t quite cut it for her.
Her new job is to lead a team of four providing security for a successful businessman on his way to visit his son and family in London, but then the more important part of the job is to ensure his son and a witness make it to the Hague in one piece. His son is a lawyer and his witness is to testify in a war crime trial. The witness and lawyer’s very lives are in the hands of Jastine’s small team and once they reach the Netherlands, they are going to be hampered by the fact they are not allowed to carry any arms. She only gets to meet the other three members of her team within hours of their departure and has to show them why she has been made team leader, by taking one of them down a peg or two.
This job is extremely important to Jerry and his company, and could very well ensure the future of his company and all of its operatives in the long term, with new contacts and word of mouth from job satisfaction. This client and his son are very wealthy and influential. The first part of the job is the easy part. The most dangerous part will be when they reach the Netherlands and will be facing foes who can carry any types of weapons they like and the only people that can carry arms on their side will be the local special police team, coming to help escort them to The Hague for the case to be heard. Jastine has worked out as many variables as she can before they depart, but matters may have to change once they are on the ground and under way.
An fast action storyline, that introduces you to a very strong female former elite soldier, who has now changed her job, but ends up having to use all the skills she was taught by her father and in her time in the army, to survive every confrontation she comes across. I can’t wait to see this become a series and for some longer books to read. If this is what the author can produce for this character in such a short book, it bodes well for the future and one I have added to my favourites list. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Heading: Straight into the book from page 1! This was so easy to get into and from the off I was hooked, I also enjoyed and liked the tough female “for a change” and it is the introduction of many books to come with Justin and future missions. I really, really enjoyed the writing style, the characters and the writing flow. It was action packed, addictive as I wanted more and more as I read and more importantly believable and surprising only downside is that it is only a short novella story. Justin Chase has been there done it in and was trained by a Delta Force and served in the Delta Force Special Forces and is one tough cookie. She has al the usual combat surveillance survival and one to one combat skills but after leaving the army was a little lost working on a farm until recruited by her old Master Sergeant Jerry to join his personal protection firm to protect. Her new position is to lead her new team providing security for a successful businessman, his son and family in London but more importantly ensure that they make it to testify in a war crime case in The Hague. First Justin has to put one of her team in his place who isn’t to happy with a women in the lead. From there on in it is action all the way and shows off Justin’s skills and the reason she is so highly regarded bu her old Master Sergeant and new boss. If this short Novella is anything to go by with the story telling characters and action there is going to be some interesting and exciting books coming our way! I am looking forward very much to the next book and hopefully a full addition Justin Case book this time! I high recommend you give this book a go if you into a fast paced high action great read! I highly recommend you get this book and start reading it now.
Keen observation is key to the game… When you mess with danger it takes more than a gun to stay safe. Jastine is well qualified for the job. Although she could beguile a man with her looks, she relies on her combat skills, leadership qualities and prowness to succeed at her job working for a protection agency. As the story unfolds, we learn more about Jasmine and her personal goals, how she prefers to operate when on task and we get to know her likely contract partners for future assignments – so it seems. Future novels should be just as interesting. I found this one to be a quick, pleasant read that kept me on my toes.
This was a good action packed story with decent character development and lots of suspense with a fast moving plot. It really winds up towards the end with a good climax. Reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of all the editing errors. Too many misused words, typos, and you get the drift. They were of the distracting nature. But if you can overlook sloppy editing and are looking for a fast moving story, you will definitely enjoy this offering by Richard Fox.
Short, fast paced attention grabbing story. Didn't stop reading until I finished it. I do like strong female leads and That's definitely Jastine. Thanks so much for my free copy for subscription to your news letter.
A fast-paced thriller that spans a couple of continents and several international cities. The characters are new to one another and the company that they were hired by.
Whew. This was a thrill ride. New job for a woman retired from the Army without the stereotypical Army thinking. Head of a team to deliver a lawyer and witness to The Hague. Can't wait to read more of this series.
