I grew up in a normal home... Okay, who am I kidding?
Mom did the absolute best she could as an exotic dancer, but my childhood was far from normal.
Most girls don't learn knife work at age twelve, have friends with names like Bones and Cobra. The average sixteen-year-old doesn’t take on vigilante acts either. What can I say, I was a lonely girl when Mom passed, what better way to pass the time? Now at twenty-three, it looks like my life might be finding stable again within the crew Cobra, Bones and I created...
That is until trouble falls into our club, in the form of four hotter than hell men, who inform me that I’m the lost girl of the Conti family... ya know, just one of the largest mafia families in the country... and they’re my enforcers.
I doubt they expected Priest, the vigilante crew member when they came looking for me
Even setting aside the glaring lack of editing – I don’t think the author ever managed to spell “taut” properly – Lost Girl still isn’t what I would call a good book.
There is nothing subtle about the writing, choosing to go with the lazy definition of “strong female character”: a hot woman with a foul mouth who has no problem pointing loaded guns at everyone, electrocuting men’s testicles and serving vigilante justice at age 16, because she is just that cool. Everyone respects her, and even the boss of her gang is in that position because SHE wants him there; she is also physically strong enough to pick up men taller than her by the neck – but the book makes it a point to mention that she is not bulky! because that wouldn’t fit with the traditional ‘hot’ standard – and doesn’t mind flashing her bra holster in a room full of men because “she doesn’t give a wink”. A bra holster she wears with a crop top, too. Because why the hell not.
Even Luca goes “I’ll probably sleep better knowing that she isn’t relying on us to be her knights in shining armor”, because the book really, really thinks readers need to have “Priest is an independent woman who needs no man” spelled out in blinking marquee lights.
I would have less of a problem with her being such a stereotype if it didn’t come at the cost of any meaningful characterization for the men around her. Despite being the boss of a successful mafia family, her biological father is nothing but a ridiculous caricature that's impossible to take seriously as a threat. This book doesn't want believable characters, it wants props to exist for nothing else but remark how Priest is always right. She goes on these long speeches that leave the men stunned, and can take a torch to her adoptive father’s car without consequence because she justifies it as “exacting her justice”. Idiotic justice born out of some sort of entitlement over her mother's and adoptive father's love life, I may add. The book tried really hard to justify that bullshit and failed hard.
That aside, the bare bones of the plot (lost mafia princess having grown into a crew queen on her own merit, as well as the machinations the world of mafia had set in motion long before she was born) ARE interesting. It’s just too bad everything around them was so very poorly constructed.
This being Elena Trueblood’s first published work I am willing to consider it a one-off and give future books of her a chance. Just not in this series. First impressions matter, and this one was very, very bad, and I need more books to repeat to me just how perfect Priest is like I need another hole in the head.
(Also, what the hell was it with that footnote about Warwick? This book spoiled what seems to be an important plot point in the 4th book in the series. Gotta admit, that was a first).
There is a a blurb under the story synopsis that says this story had been updated addressing all the editing errors. WRONG! This story is hard enough to believe and the editing errors make it worse. A "crew" working on the same town as the Matilda and the missing daughter is the leader? And the mob has no clue about the existence is said crew or the leader? Author asking reader to suspend too much reality
First things first; I really like the cover of this book! Lost girl is book one in the ‘’mafia princess, crew queen’’ series. This story is short, fast paced and action packed. I read this book in one sitting and was satisfied throughout. Lost girl is the first book of Elena Trueblood’s that I have read. I found the writing style fairly easy to follow, the characters likeable and the storyline entertaining. I will admit, there were quite a lot of grammar errors in this story. That being said, I still enjoyed the story. Priest is the queen of the phoenix crew and a secret mafia princess. She is not someone to be messed with. When her long lost daddy and his enforcers arrive in her life, she is not best pleased. I really liked Elda/Priest. I loved how kickass she was. I liked that she was well respected and had no issues and making her status known. I liked how everyone was either scared of her of shocked by her. I wasn’t a fan of Alonzo. I understood why he was the way that he was. That being said, I hated the way he thought he could make Priest give everything up. Especially with his demands at the end of the story. I liked Alex, Antonio and Luca but I wasn’t sure about Giovanni. I loved Bones. His love for Priest is undeniable. I really cannot wait for more from this series.
For some reason Amazon wouldnt let me leave a review so here it is. Amazing is one of the first things that come to mind. Such a unique twist on the mafia princess books. Yes, there were quite a bit of errors in the writing but everyone makes mistakes. So I think the prof reading should of been alittle bit better but this was still a good read. Overlooking the mistakes and confusing parts this was a great book with an even better storyline. I cant wait to see what else this series has in store for me!!! I definitely loved the different POV's. It really helped getting inside everyone's head. Book 2 here I come!
So the book started off Great! But then it had to gets weird with Bones and his girlfriend. Then to include that Priest is a badass that she has to be upset about almost everything. Nothing about her is calm but I guess that's the point. But sometimes too much of a badass gets boring. I thought it would be a great opening to a badass chick. Not a personality of a man chick that she is. So not my cup of tea. I stopped at 65% and this is just based on my own thoughts and how much I read.
Ok! First and foremost this needs a edit super bad, I've delt with miss spelled words but this is more then that, we are missing words all together and have words that seem to not belong. ( please fix ). Moving on, I love a strong women and can honestly say I want to see how this all plays out. I had a few issues where I too felt she was kinda of childish and everyone was catering to a child throwing tantrums, and the mob guys being less then tough enough to deal with her or her methods, as men of that caliber I expect then to be hardcore, but seeing as priest was the only bad**** who seemed to be in this story it felt a tad bit ridiculous.
I enjoyed this book! Read it in one sitting and felt entertained! “Priest” is one helluva a FMC and kicks major butt in a world of men that are tough killing machines. Not that you are exposed to too much violence ,however, the parts that you are tolerable and apt as you are let in slowly to Priest’s world. The hotness level is set to a slow burn but has a lot of bite to it and overall this book sets you up for a potentially 4.5-5 star book if the author gets the editing level up to 100% correctness!
This was really good. I can’t wait to see how Priest makes all those boys heel. I’m so looking forward to seeing how she rearranges her fathers whole operation up in arms. This boys have no idea what there dealing with. I’m looking forward to reading the next book.
Priest. Her mom was an exotic dancer, her dad an unknown gang member. Raised by her mom's boyfriend Cobra after her murder, she learned how to protect herself with her fists, knives, and guns. Along with Cobra and her best friend Bones, they started the Phoenix Crew to rule the area. She became a voice for the women carrying out vengeance to keep them safe. She lived life on her own terms until the night her past caught up. Her father was no "gang member". He was a mafia head. And he had found her.
I liked this story despite itself. As others have pointed out it needs a critique partner or a strong beta team. The errors are enough to take you out of the story and that shouldn't happen, so I had to deduct a star. It's such an easy fix. The story has everything it needs to be successful, good characters, conflict, and future resolution within the story arc. Priest is a forceful female, easily capable of driving the storyline. Alonso's men are dangerous and sexy. Perfect. Alonso, himself, is in for a bumpy ride. Cobra is good as the complicated father figure. The only one I'm not sure about is Bones. Brother, best friend, lover...and also in love with another woman. That doesn't work for me, so we will have to see how it plays out. I hope the editing issues are worked out because I look forward to the upheaval Priest brings into her father's world. Silly man truly believes he's the one in charge. Ha!
So this was a whim type of read for me , I came across it by chance and thought ‘why not?’ ... soooo glad I did ! I love the characters ( even if some of them make me want to smack them ) and really enjoyed the story , the plot moved well , characters were developed , the only criticism I can say is a few typos ( not enough to take away from the story ) overall great book and I will be waiting for book 2 :)
Raised in a rough area, nurtured on violence and trained to survive and flourish by those who love her, Priest is not real happy to learn about her legacy as mafia princess.
While this is not my usual jaundra , I really like this scenario and look forward, very impatiently I might add, to how Priest educated her father and all those with whom she interacts.
Priest is a badass, but sometimes too much of a badass gets boring and unrealistic. There's nothing wrong with being feminine; I think it would've made this book a 4-star read if she didn't act like a man who is invinsibla in a "hot woman's" body. what a waste.
Hell yes a kick ass female lead with sass and just overall strong independent women. Oh I love these guys and can't wait to see how each relationship develops.
Loved the MC. Smart, independent, and doesn’t need saving. Her confidence is amazing. Then, to top it off, she is not a virgin. I hate it when that trope is thrown in.
