Four years ago, I met Liam Holdsworthy. Hot, snarky, and hiding behind a sadness I couldn’t place. I wanted him, even back then. There were only two problems. One, I was deeply closeted. And two, he was dating my best friend. Now I’m retired from the NFL and openly out, there’s nothing to stop me from getting my gay on. When Liam comes back into my life, and I realize he’s single, I’ll find any reason to spend time with him. That’s how I created a list of gay first experiences I coax him into helping me with. But I don’t just want his help. I still want him.
Liam
After leaving a long-term relationship with a closeted NFL player, I went through a string of guys trying to find the one. None of them were boyfriend material let alone the forever type. I’m looking for a guy to come home to. Someone serious and down to earth. I’m definitely not looking for Cooper Zane. Yet, I can’t shake him, and not only because I’m helping him with his big bi bucket list. Every time I see him is like a shot of adrenaline to my system, and I’m always left wanting more. I need Mr. Serious, and Cooper’s the least serious person I’ve met. He’s newly out. He’s never had a relationship. And most importantly, he may be retired, but he’s not done with football. He’ll do anything to get it all back. And I’m not prepared to be relegated to the sidelines ever again.
Calling Your Bluff is book two in the Love’s a Gamble series by Saxon James. I read the blurb of this and thought, oh, this sounds really good, only to realize that I read the previous book in the series, Bet On Me, and loved it as well. So, this is my second Saxon James book and I have decided that I just love the way she writes.
Liam Holdsworthy is twenty seven years old and is a seventh grade teacher. We first met him in the previous book as the ex-boyfriend of Taryn. Liam is drawn to athletic men, but seems to keep choosing the ones who want to keep him a secret, as it was with Taryn since Taryn was in the closet at the time they dated. Now Taryn is out and proud and is getting married. Liam wants to fall in love with someone that will put him first, a secure relationship, settle down with someone who is proud of him.
Cooper Zane is thirty three years old. He was forced to retire from the NFL team he was playing for due to an ankle injury. But, his love for football has not waned. He has no idea what to do with his life now. He only knows that he wants football to be involved somehow.
Cooper and Liam first met several years prior when Cooper saw Liam at an event standing by himself. He first felt attracted to him right then but he soon learned that Liam was dating Cooper’s closest friend, Taryn. Cooper wasn’t out yet anyway. Now, he runs into Liam again and Liam is single. Not to mention, that Cooper has come out himself. He’s not hiding who he is anymore. His attraction to Liam is stronger than ever. The problem is, that Liam has sworn off football players. He says he wants a quiet stable relationship. Cooper is not giving up. He’s dedicated to winning Liam over any way he can.
“He tastes like promises and hope, and I want this feeling to take me through the rest of my life.”
I enjoyed this so much. I didn’t give it five full stars only because at one point they dabbled a bit in the wearing of make up and such and I don’t really enjoy that. But I did fall in love with these characters. I absolutely loved Cooper Zane. He was so much fun. He called Liam pet names, all different ones, and it was hilarious. I laughed out loud. He had such a way about him, he could win anyone over. This is more about these two finding their way, Cooper knew he wanted Liam in his life but was struggling with what his life would look like going forward. Liam just had to settle the battle between his head and his heart. Together, these two were so much fun and oh so sexy.
I definitely recommend this and will be looking forward to more books by this author in the future.
Okay, first... Zane is extremely adorable, I loved him at first sight. He’s honest and endearing. Also, Liam stole my heart, he’s snarky, vulnerable, and lovable.
Liam is at the wedding of his ex-boyfriend. Awkward? Absolutely but they are still friends. He was never first in their relationship, the sport was, they even got back in the closet for Taryn’s football. And now he’s getting married and is out and proud! Liam is so done with athletics.
Zane, who was Taryn’s teammate now retired because of an injury, has a crush for Liam already over four years. Now is the time to approach Liam. Liam is clear they will never be something because... sports and priorities. They will be friends and Liam will help Zane in the gay scene. Nothing more. Right?
Whooaah... at times the intensity got sky-high, it took my breath away.
A super delightful story, I loved everything about it. Zane and Liam are just so extremely endearing together. The humor, the lighthearted atmosphere, their trips, all very entertaining and enjoyable. Zane takes Liam’s insecurities for real and is laser-focused on Liam. A wonderfully written story, it had a lot of fun, it was sexy, kind, and very entertaining!
Liam was a kind of boyfriend the closeted jock hides, and he's just be there for his ex for six years, been a wallflower when his (ex) boyfriend pointed him as 'friend'. After broke-up with his long term boyfriend, and attended his wedding with a man, Liam had it enough. No more jock boyfriend. But there's Cooper Zane, a popular jock and very famous (retired) football player, his ex's best friend, who apparently attracted to Liam for years. But the problem is, Zane cannot live without his sport, but he also cannot life without Liam, who cannot live with a guy who cannot live without sport :)
This was a sweet adorable read where Liam and Zane tried so hard to stay away from a relationship, but failed. But things with Liam and Zane are about priorities.
And acceptance. And how strong is their love to fight for obstacles. Now that I though about Taryn, Liam's ex and now friend, I didn't really like him. He seemed like a selfish person, because ignoring Liam for his career is no option. At least for Zane, Liam will always his number one, even though he had to sacrificed everything, including his career.
Zane is the sweetest, ever! He's a book boyfriend material we need to keep. On the other side, I wonder if I read Taryn's book in the future (actually, his story is book one of this series), will I like him, or not really. Because, in my head, he's still a jerk, who made Liam sad and felt abandoned.
This is the first book of this author, and I like the writing style. Maybe, I'll just need to rip the band-aid , and read book one!
What do you do when your whole life changes and suddenly the man who was off limits is finally single and free?
When they first met, Liam was very much involved in a relationship, unbeknownst to anyone but him and his longtime boyfriend. It's what he'd signed up for, but the closet was getting to stuffy and Liam wanted out. He wanted to see and be seen.
For Zane, he was the best friend, the one left in the dark, until it all came to light. When life changed, Zane realised that he had a small opportunity to be the light in Liam's eyes. But was he willing to be just friends, learning all he could from Liam, then walking away?
What tickled me about this book was Zane's quirkiness and his intent to give Liam the best experiences ever. Even his silly nicknames had me laughing out loud. The past played a heavy part on both men's life and it shaped them to the men they were today. If they could survive one wedding and all fate was throwing out at them...
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through GRR.
The thing is before reading every Saxon James book, I think I'm not gonna like it. But the way she writes it gets me every time. The writing is so damn good. There is flow and a ease to it. You fall in love with the characters and you root for them by the time you finish the book. A perfect rom-com.
I think I've only read Saxon's coauthored works and loved them so I had high hopes for this one, and was definitely not disappointed! It's one of those fluffy reads that just makes you smile while reading. Super low angst and very lovable characters
Loved. Loved. Loved. Loved this book. I can’t say it enough.
I was so excited to get Zane and Liam’s story from this series and I was not disappointed to read about Liam’s tragic dating history, his insecurities, and his stubbornness.
Zane was everything I hoped he would be. A giant teddy bear, full of humor and good intentions.
Even with the insistence to be just friends, they both struggled with the desire for one another from their first meeting on. Their relationship spans a commitment to overcome each other’s fears and a desire to be more.
I highly recommend this to anyone who loves ridiculous pet names, steamy moments, plenty of cuddling, hot first kisses, & an HEA. This book nailed so many of my high points, it was an amazing read.
I really really loved this book! This is a new to me author and I devoured this book in 1 sitting because I was so invested in their story. Zane and Liam are so perfect together and their chemistry is insane. The character development in this story was so very well done and the story flows so perfectly that I was never bored! Zane's pet names for Liam were hilarious and I find myself laughing out loud a few times throughout the book. Liam's self discovery couldn't have come at a better time and I did find myself tearing up towards the end of this book. This book is low angst but the feels are all there. Definitely an easy read and one I might pick up again when I'm in a rut!
This wonderful story just really clicked with me. The writing and character development are so well done and the romance between Zane and Liam flows along at the perfect pace. I read this in one sitting because I was so invested in the outcome. These two main characters are so much fun and easy to like. There’s so many ridiculous pet names from Zane and dead pan/witty banter between him and Liam. Theirs is a slow burn romance but once the spark flames the heat levels skyrocket. A couple of issues need to be dealt with by both parties but they do get their HEA. If you’re after a well crafted book, with no angst, sweet tender moments, laugh out loud moments and goofy pet names, then I highly recommend this book. This is the second book in the series but it can be read as a standalone. The main characters from the first book do have an important role so to enhance your reading experience you may choose to read the first book.
I loved this book! The chemistry between Cooper and Liam is insane! I loved Cooper's sense of humor. He is now one of my favorite book characters ever. Cooper and Liam are so cute together. I already mentioned their chemistry, but there was great dialogue too. I definitely recommend this book if you like HEAs, sports romances, laugh-out-loud moments, and sweet moments.
Cooper has retired from the NFL and came out of the closet as bi. The only hitch? Well, he hasn't exactly done anything to further um, educate himself on his newly proclaimed identity. No matter because he's somehow charmed his best friend's ex, Liam, into helping him with his gay bucket list. Liam will help him experience all the non-sexual aspects of his list, Cooper will get his fix of the guy he has been obsessed with forever now, and everything will be great. Except not. Not because of course they're not going to be able to keep their hands off each other when they're so attracted to each other. The biggest obstacle to them won't be that Liam is Taryn's ex, though, but because Liam always promised himself no more athletes after his relationship with Taryn ended so badly, and Cooper's passion is still football even if he isn't playing it professionally any longer.
This is such a sweet, low on angst, witty read. I absolutely love the way these two interact with each other. Their crazy pet names, their snark and their wit, and how charming Cooper is and Liam pretends to barely put up with him. They're just so cute together. I loved the first story in this series, Bet on Me, and I am glad to know the series is still just as wonderfully written, just as sexy, and just as sweet with its second outing.
mannnn, i can't tell how high i feel right now on fluff and adorable characters. if i thought i loved Elliot and Taryn's story, then this is way beyond love. the perfect grumpy/sunshine 🥰
i mean, this book is the manifestation of snug cuddles and tight bear hugs. the muscles of my face were at an almost risk of being cramped by too-much-smiling. Saxon James is my comfort go-to author for a reason.
i knew i would love Liam and Zane together, even tho there's a sticky point of Liam being Taryn's ex, who's Zane's ex-teammate, i still was already SO invested in them. because even through Liam and Taryn's break up scene, and the scenes afterwards where Liam showed his concern for Taryn as just his friend, Liam's mild, soft-spoken character was shining through.
but the showstopper here was definitely Zane. his exuberant, golden retriever puppy energy. his easy laughs and his life-of-the-party mien. the way he was the personification of 'he fell first, AND he fell harder'. the way he was the perfect sunshine to Liam's grumpy.
the way he was aware of putting Liam on a pedestal and still did it anyway, the way he was constantly SHOWERING Liam with the stupidest nicknames and affection and attention and assuaging as much of Liam's insecurities and hangups about his past without invalidating them. the way he wasn't hesitant over making a clown of himself just to tear a laugh out of Liam, everything just made me want to go feral for him. the fact that he had a crush on Liam even years ago also definitely made me jump on this harder and faster, and i am SO glad that his crush didn't remain unrequited for long, not when Liam finally was free from Taryn and their break-up. I JUST ADORED ZANE. also the fact he had a bi bucket list to exhaust? AAAH A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART.
their chemistry was of course just palpable from the wedding but i loved how it built from a sweet friendship over fulfilling Cooper's bi bucket list, how quickly Cooper wore down Liam's cranky defenses with his liberal charm and infant-like jokes and nicknames and how he never stepped back from making Liam feel good even after his less-than-enthusiastic responses.
Liam also felt very real and relatable. his shitty dates and not putting his best efforts into himself. his resignation with life (initially). his past with Taryn where he had to go back into closet and stay into a secret relationship for six years (?!) was painful and emotional honestly, and i can totally see why he'd want the affirmation and reassurances and the need to be acknowledged in public from his partner. for them to prioritize him before anything. and again i LOVED Zane for not disparaging or undermining his need for that, for rather fulfilling that need without making it seem forced or suggested or half-hearted attempts at only keeping him happy. for making Liam feel seen and needed and loved and important naturally, of his own volition, without any provocation or nudge or direction, not bc he had to, but just bc he couldn't help it.
and while i felt a little annoyed at Liam for being so hell-bent on keeping football out of their life, again his burn from that sport was also painfully transparent, so his reservations were very much justified. but i am SO glad he made the choice to make Cooper happier and trust him rather than feed his own fear of being left alone and ignored and emphasize his past, that their relationship wasn't one-sided where the only efforts at prioritizing their partner was from Cooper. his character growth was huge, i felt it like a very personal thing.
but mainly i LOVED the fluff, the adoration from both of them toward each other, the SILLY NICKNAMES, how they both put each other first. and did i mention the NICKNAMES and the fluff?? and how much i smiled like a lunatic? okay.
I like this follow-up just a bit more than the first in the series mostly because Zane and Liam were just more interesting to read. Something about their characters and their internal conflicts and reservations was just more appealing to me I guess. It does still feel just a little too long by a couple of chapters so the "will they won't they" aspect comes off as drawn out a bit too much.
“Let’s be clear here. We arrived together, and we’re leaving together. Have your fun teasing me, but you’re not looking at anyone else tonight.”
THIS. BOOK. I feel like normally in a series - or duo in this case - people prefer the first book because they get attached to the first couple and generally prefer them over other couples in the series. But I actually think I might prefer this book over Bet On Me , despite how much I loved Taryn & Elliot's story.
This one was just a lot sweeter, it had a lot of beautiful moments, and I loved seeing Cooper finally getting the chance to explore his sexuality, and Liam finally knowing what it's like to be with someone who treasures him the way he deserves.
Zane has had a crush on Liam since before he knew he was his best friend's boyfriend and it hasn't abated ever since he saw the sad man across the room and couldn't stop himself from keeping him company. There's only one problem, now that Liam and Taryn are done with their relationship, Liam is equally done with football players, no matter if they're exactly his type. He's ready to come out of the closet his ex pushed him into and find his forever man. Liam doesn't think Zane, who is quite the player according to everyone and has recently come out as bi, is the right one, no matter how attracted to him Liam is.
So, here's the thing, I loved fun, sweet Zane from the start. I found it endearing how taken with Liam he was from the start and how much better he always treated Liam than Taryn ever did. The scene where they meet each other, made my heart break for Liam and hate Taryn, so I was set to love Liam as well. Then Liam happened. *sighs* He was nice enough, I guess, but so difficult and judgmental regarding Zane, no matter how hard he tried. Zane was like a puppy trying to please their owner and Liam was the twatwaffle who refused to be charmed for fear of being hurt. I get it, to a certain point. Taryn was awful to him and frankly, I have no clue how they could remain friends after they broke up, especially since Taryn was marrying Elliott eleven months after they did. *rolls eyes* Even then, I remained open and willing to give Liam a chance, until something that happens near the end and that totally put me off him. I don't care if they had chemistry or they were really hot together, Liam didn't deserve someone like Zane that was willing to do just about anything to put him first, when Liam wasn't as willing to reciprocate.
Overall, the book was well-written and entertaining, I loved Zane and Zane and Liam's banter and their 'dates' and while I hadn't read book 1, I didn't feel lost. And really, I'm sure others might like Liam, or even love him, more than I did, so take my review with a grain of salt.

4.5 stars...This book has two of my favorite tropes, jock/non-jock and friends to lovers. Liam is the former hidden boyfriend of pro football player Taryn. Taryn wasn’t out so Liam was a secret, introduced as his friend, despite being together for a long time. In the prologue, Liam is at yet another football event with Taryn as his friend and he meets Cooper. Then we flash forward four years to chapter one where Taryn is now out and getting married…not to Liam. He and Liam have been broken up less than a year but already Taryn has met someone else, proposed and they are getting married quickly. But Taryn and Liam have remained friends which keeps him in Cooper’s orbit. And unbeknownst to Liam Cooper has had a thing for him since that first meeting.
Liam, a teacher, is on summer break and bemoaning the state of his life. Taryn has moved on, come out and is getting married. He’s still single, can’t meet anyone he is interested in and didn’t get the promotion to head teach at work that he wanted. And now he’s got Cooper renewing their acquaintance and wanting to be friends.
This is an interesting premise with several obstacles for the MCs to overcome…dating your best friend’s ex, first time with a man, emotional baggage from past relationships, fear of failure, fear of being hurt, loss of a career and no idea on a new direction…lots of potential drama to mine here. For the most part it is all handled deftly. The story arc moves well, slowing in only a spot or two, and the character development moves well too. Liam gets a little whiny for me in parts, a little so woe is me, but Cooper seems to have the patience to wait him out and the insight to figure out why he’s fighting their attraction.
The ending is sweet and romantic and we get to the understanding of self and others that both of these characters needed. There are a lot of small points in the story that really made me happy with the author for getting things right. Lines that might seem like throwaways to others but are significant to people who can relate.
The secondary characters are integral pieces of the story. I did feel like I came into a story part way through, as if perhaps I was already supposed to know Taryn and Elliott’s story and to have some background info here that I didn’t have. It was really bugging me so I finally went and looked and yes, indeed, there is a book before this one that tells their story. I did not realize this was book two in a series. I wish I had and had read it first as I feel like it would have given me better insight into these characters. Liam and Cooper’s story mostly stands alone but if you are a series reader you will know what I mean about feeling like you’re missing something. So I’d recommend reading book one first. I’m going to do that right now.
**I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion.**
Cooper Zane first started flirting with Liam years ago when he was his best friend's secret boyfriend. Nothing came of it then, of course, but now he's out though he still doesn't have any experience with men. Liam, meanwhile, is carrying a lot of baggage from his time being kept secret. When they reconnect at the best friend's wedding there is definitely chemistry...
I like the premise of Calling Your Bluff - it's a bit of an emotional roller-coaster as Zane and Liam work through everything to get to their HEA. There are feelings of discovery and joy right there alongside insecurities and guilt; and ultimately the feeling of when it's right, it's right.
My one issue with the book (and the reason for the dropped star in my rating) is that it took me a long time to warm to Liam...his character might be a little too well-written, even? Intellectually, I know that being held back in the dark in a closeted relationship did a number on him - and you can see why in the first book in this series if you haven't already read it, but on the page he really comes across as a complete @ss quite a bit, especially when Zane is being nothing short of amazing and is willing to sacrifice things that mean so much to him so they can stay in the relationship. Honestly, I might decide he's too high maintenance in Zane's position...but that's just me.
So overall, Calling Your Bluff is a very good read - there's a lot of humour in Zane and Liam's getting to know each other properly which nicely balances the angst of Liam's growth as a character as he comes to terms with his issues and re-evaluates his expectations of people. 4*
I was given an ARC by GRR in exchange for an honest review.
This is a new to me author but I guess I've found a new favourite. I love the writing and I loved this book so much.
Zane is a huge teddy bear with a heart of gold. He's a goner for Liam since the beginning and it is so adorable. His ridiculous pet names are one of my favourite parts. They have amazing chemistry together and are so cute. I devoured it because I loved Liam and Zane so much. Liam has a lot of insecurities and Zane is so understanding. (Obviously I like Zane a lot 😏)
I don't know how I feel abou Taryn, Liam's ex and Zane's best friend. He and Elliot are really great but I can't help but dislike him for the way he treated Liam. Maybe I should read their book. (It's the 1st book in the series)
This book is in dual POV and can be read as a standalone. It's sweet, sexy and with basically no angst. I adored this book and the epilogue was just perfect.
*ARC provided by the author via Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest and unbiased review
I didn't particularly enjoy this one, although I generally like sports romances. I've not read the first book of the series and I think that may have influenced my view on the MCs: Zane seemed too perfect to be real, ready to jump through loops for Liam's love, who was just... sexy. Yeah, they had good rapport and easy banter, but I didn't feel the chemistry and TBH I didn't particularly understand Liam's appeal :( The book starts with Zane already having a crash on Liam, and not having read the first book, I couldn't understand why; Liam was described as beautiful (even his skin tone wasn't mentioned or at least I don't remember it, just brown eyes and dark curls), but he had no friends, no hobbies, no striking personality... Nada. I think if I'd read the first one I might have enjoyed this one better. Well, at least I managed to finish it, which is more than I can say for the last 2 books I picked.
Calling Your Bluff is the second book in The Love's a Gamble Series by Saxon James. I loved the first book. After I finished the first I was hoping the second book would be about Zane, so when I got a chance to read and review the second I couldn’t say no.
4 years ago Zane was deeply closeted and had a crush on Liam Holdsworthy. But besides being deeply closeted Liam was in a relationship with his best friend. Now Zane is out and retired. When Liam is back in his life and single Zane can't let that opportunity go to waste. He creates a first time gay experiences list and coaxes Liam to help him.
Liam is looking for something serious and Cooper Zane is the least serious person he knows.
I loved the writing and the story very much. Zane and Liam were so good together.
Note: I put off writing the reviews since January. I'm slowly catching up. So my memory will vary according to how long ago I read it and how impactful it was.
After reading the synopsis I remebmered a bit, but not very much.
For starters, I didn't know the previous characters since I hadn't read the first book (it didn't inspire me).
Overall, it was slightly repetitive at times and the plot was non-existent. In the end it was underwhelming and anticlimactic. They had so much anxiety about Taryn and ultimately there were no problems at all. It felt like the plot was made purely of excuses dragged to the very end. The character's personality wasn't too credible and I never grew attached to any of them.
I enjoyed Zane and Liam’s story. I’m a big fan of sports and sports romances alike, so I was eager to give this a read. I enjoyed how Zane and Liam’s friendship developed and later turned romantic. I loved Zane’s all in attitude and how Liam kept trying to hold him back due to his own hang ups. I liked how they took the time to explore their feelings and relationship before potentially turning their lives upside down. I loved their super hot chemistry and the sexy times. Best of all I loved how Zane our Liam first and made him feel so loved.
While this book can stand-alone, I think it would be best enjoyed after reading Bet on Me, the first in the series.
It is a really sweet love story with amazing sexual chemistry between MCs and some absolutely SCORCHING HOT sex! Liam and Cooper are ADORABLE together. They kept trying not to get involved when in reality they couldn't stay away from each other :) They were totally made for each other. It was my first book by this author and it was really enjoyable. I couldn't get enough of all the teasing, pet names and "gay bucket list". It is kinda obvious from the very beginning that there will be a HEA but that is exactly what those guys deserved - a chance of a happy life together.
It might not be the most original story, but it is well written, funny and cute. I need to read the previous book in this series and I can't wait for more stories about hot football players!
* I was gifted an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review *
I loved both the characters that chemistry and the banter. The pet names were hilarious.
But somewhere in the second part I lost interest because of the insecurities that Liam projected but at the end he try to change his respective and it was sweet when they all got to know each other and trust each other.
Enjoyed this one too. Zane was a really great guy and Liam sounded cool even in the first book.
He was a very minor character who only appeared briefly but I also thought Paul was adorable and sweet and I hope he found his HEA as well lol. Liam was kind of a dick to him.
I quite liked this one!! I feel like the author did a good job not making the best friend falling for the ex feel skeevy or sneaky at all. The characters were lovely, as was their connection, and I really appreciated the issues they had to overcome, and how they didn't feel manufactured or overblown. I did find it a *bit* annoying how much crap Taryn got for keeping his ex a secret, when it was something they'd been very up-front and honest about from the start. I feel like it was touched on a bit, Liam's role in that, but not nearly enough, IMO. If you have a problem with something, you need to say something, not just simmer in resentment... But very small quibble overall.
