What if your entire life was a lie?

Sixteen-year-old Luxor Everstone had the idyllic life — wealthy, popular and beautiful. Until in a fit of rage, she almost killed her best friend. And herself.

Waking up from a coma she senses everything is different. She is different. A darkness lingers deep inside laced with rage, further fuelled by a faceless man who haunts her.

Exiled to a sleepy town for a new start and to attend a juvenile rehabilitation centre, all she wants is a clean slate. Except the universe has other plans as crimson eyed people reeking of sulphur throw her life into peril at every turn.

Encountering Hunter is a surprise in more ways than one. Enigmatic and antagonistic, against her will a strong electric connection draws her to him. But Hunter's curious nature and innate ability to know Luxor's thoughts keep her on edge, so does his offer of helping her uncover the lies.

Torn between attraction and her instincts to flee, will she put herself at risk for answers?

Or will the truth heal, or taint her soul?

I'm an indie author and have published my debut Unveiled (The Chronicles of Luxor Everstone) on June 2020. The sequel Betrayed will be published on November 19th 2020. I'm a mother of two boys, a self confessed nerd who loves to write dark and twisted characters in modern settings. You could find feisty MC’s and bad boys with filthy mouths. Doesn’t mean I don’t love to read or write saucy romances too!

Keep up-to-date on any releases or teasers.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read her book in exchange for an honest review!

"Luxor smiled, entranced by the chaos even if she couldn’t recognize the repercussions it would have."

I’m going to start by saying I am seriously surprised this book hasn’t been talked about more! This is the author’s debut novel and you’d never guess that by reading this book! I was hooked as soon as I started reading the prologue! And that COVER? It’s beautiful!

Luxor went from being this rich popular girl, to being an outcast and losing everything she loved and knew. There was so much mystery and to this story and I was desperate to figure out what exactly happened, was going to happen and what her dreams were about.

The author’s descriptions of the world were so detailed and the world building was amazing. I also liked how the author wrote about Luxor’s inner issues. She’s angry and has every right to be. Watching her struggle to control her emotions made me feel for her but also made the story so interesting, especially since I was rooting for her!

Romance? The romance has a few cheesy moments that I thought could’ve been kept out but for the most part I enjoyed Luxor’s and Hunter’s romance. It’s not an insta-love romance. There’s banter and annoyance, then blooms friendship, then comes more.
There was a point in the book, maybe 60% through where the story started to get slow and seemed to drag a bit. I felt like at that point I expected the action and heart racing scenes to come. When it finally did, it was worth it and I found the book hard to put down. This book does end on a cliffhanger, just FYI. There were also a quite a few spelling/grammar errors.

This book was truly amazing and I’m very excited for book two. Bravo to the author for such a amazing debut novel!

DNF...
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get past 30% as in a space of two chapters, the author wrote the MC as making two assumptions of other characters ‘seriously needing pills to calm down’ and ‘he is undoubtedly bipolar and missed his meds this morning’, completely unnecessary to the storyline.

I don’t find it amusing or okay to bring very serious mental health or invisible illnesses in as a ‘joke’ or snarky comment, even in fictional works, and I cannot support something that tries to do just that. There is many other ways to portray what you’re trying to say.

This story, up until now was quite disjointed with no real flow and I really struggled getting this far into the book. The dialog and conversations didn’t make much sense to me, stopping and starting randomly. The MC complained about all of the people around her, not possessing any qualities that allowed me to connect with her or the story.

Hopefully others can enjoy the story, but the mental health ‘jokes’ were atrocious.

***Thank you to the author for the ARC***

Firstly, lets give it a minute and adore the absolute beauty and perfection that is the cover of Unveiled.

Now I'd like to start this review by saying that this book began with a bang! Just having read through the prologue and I was already hooked. Luxor is your average high school elite with beauty, brains and a BFF. And popularity never hurts. She had been living a perfect life any school girl wishes for. Until one incident changes all of that and she is forced to uproot her life in Hampton Cove and move away to a tiny and peculiar town with her mum/aunt who she has a difficult relationship with.

Once there, she meets the mysterious and enigmatic Hunter whom she can't decide if she wants to kick or kiss. There is a pull between them that is hard for Luxor to understand. Stranger things are happening to and around Luxor and no one seems to give her any answers until she decides that if the answers wouldn't come to her, she would go to them. The book is a bit longer than most I usually read and felt it drag a little bit along the middle but I believe it gives more authenticity to the plot.

Unveiled is a story of a girl finding who she is and as the truth is revealed, I'm certainly looking forward to the sequel! Congratulations to the author for such an amazing debut.

Let's start with how gorgeous this cover is! Absolutely stunning, mix that with a very intriguing synopsis and I was hooked!
Luxor's story is shrouded in mystery. You truly never know what is really happening or going on in her life, or even in her dreams. There are some characters you just can't help but love, and some you just hate. Without giving any spoilers, this story kept me wanting to know more and I am looking forward to see how it all unfolds on book 2!

This story starts with a boom! You get plunged into the story with the prologue.  The detail is absorbing and you feel like you are in the high school hierarchy and all that entails.  This story is set in Australia in a small town with a cast of interesting characters.  If you are like me you get drawn to Hunter, there's too much confidence and mystery not to.  He's that slow burn, high school crush that I remember.  I'm rooting for Huxor 😊.  The action was intense and the book ends on an exciting cliffhanger.  I don't want to give anything away but it was definitely my kind of read!  Can't wait for Book 2 in the Chronicles!

**

"She turned her head to the side and noticed the guy with the toffee coloured eyes. His head snapped up and jerked to the side. The moment his eyes trained on hers, his lips curved into a mischievous smile. It was for only the briefest of moments, but a bloom flushed within and her cheeks warmed up."

Wow!!! The first thing that attracted me to this book was the gorgeous cover and blurb. From the start I was pulled in with all these paranormal aspects and there was never a dull moment as something was always happening. The characters were interesting especially Luxor and Hunter *swoon.* I CANNOT wait until the next book!!

I am in love with this book. I needed a refreshing different story but I love the genre. Jacklyn was able to include a new twist never seen before in one of my favorite book genres. Going to read this again ASAP! Can not wait to continue on this journey with Luxor.

“Stars. Bright and shiny. Falling from above to crash and burn”

Unveiled is a YA Fantasy filled with mystery, deception and has that eerie small town quality throughout.

Luxor Everstone wakes up from a coma after nearly killing her best friend in a fit of rage. She feels not quite herself. Everything is different and Luxor is trying to adjust. Moved to a small town for rehabilitation, Luxor starts afresh at a new school. But, trouble looms as mystery and strange events surround Luxor, and things are not as they appear.

This book definitely has an eerie, mysterious quality right from the get-go. For me, this constant mystery that doesn’t unravel until the very end is the strongest part of the book. Even from the earliest chapters you can tell that all the characters know more about Luxor than they let on, and seeing Luxor puzzle this out is intriguing.

Bearing in mind to all potential readers, Unveiled is very strongly suited to the YA Fantasy genre and reminded me of books like Twilight and Fallen. As I’ve always been a fan of Twilight in particular this wasn’t a problem, but, I acknowledge the tropes found in YA are not for everyone. I enjoyed the book, but I can also see I’m not the exact target audience. Rather, I was just reading to enjoy the ride, and I did enjoy the twists and turns.

Luxor was probably the most interesting character for me. I liked the situation she was in and how she was trying to figure things out, while being increasingly freaked out about what was happening around her. She is angry, conflicted and second guessing who she trusts. Admittedly, it took me some time to warm to Hunter and found his early dialogue difficult, but then, I’m not normally one for the bad boy - I tend to go for the sweeter ones.

The main issues I found in Unveiled were not the story itself. The problem was - and this is true for many self published books - there needed to be a stronger beta reading and editing phase to pick up errors and inconsistencies. Unveiled is a large manuscript and there were numerous errors and typos that could’ve been better picked up, and the timeline that Luxor was in from start to finish of the book was not immediately clear to me as a reader. I hope there’s a revised edition in the future that straightens this out.

I am, for the most part, someone who likes to read a mixture of traditional and self published books. I like that self published books aren’t afraid to deviate from accepted story styles and may also tell stories in different ways. The plot structure of Unveiled is a little like a gradually uncoiling rope, and I liked that I kept trying to guess when the big reveal was going to happen.

Unveiled is a strong story and has the potential to be an interesting series. I would definitely encourage the author to strengthen the beta reading and editing phase in the subsequent books, as that will only add to the series’ strength. I will keep an eye out for the next book in the series, Betrayed to see where Luxor goes next.

Unveiled is an enchanting debut by author Jacklyn Daher.  After surviving a tragic accident, Luxor Everstone’s life is turned upside down.  As if moving to a new town and school wasn’t enough, her body has started to undergo a series of odd transformations.   Prompted by a school project, Luxor begins a search for answers about her past that reveals more than she bargained for.

This novel made me nostalgic for the days of Fallen and Hush, Hush.  It has been a while since I’ve read a new YA angels/demons series, and Unveiled just may fill that void.  Luxor is an intriguing protagonist complete with a mysterious, troubled past and a conflicted conscience.  Her internal struggles and anger control issues are what drive the plot forward.  That and a certain infuriating boy.  Hunter is antagonizing in the best way.  The development of his friendship with Luxor was both exhilarating and exhausting.  I was very pleased with where it ended and look forward to seeing more of their relationship in the upcoming sequel.

This is a longer novel at almost 600 pages and it takes about 80% of the book to get to the point.  I think the story could have been more successful if it had begun at chapter 2.  The action of the prologue was interesting, but would have packed a stronger punch being revealed throughout the course of the novel.  I would have liked to see more development of the secondary characters in a book this long.  As it was, there is a fair bit of action and excitement that kept me turning pages late into the night.

As others have mentioned, there are some grammatical errors, but they didn’t detract from the book as a whole.

CW: mental illness, depression, self harm, attempted rape, violence, and bullying

I'm going to be completely honest - I was skeptical of this book. Between the description of this book and the first few chapters, this book seemed to slightly resemble "Fallen," by Lauren Kate. I loved that book, which is partially why I gave this book a shot. As the book progressed, though, the plot and characters portrayed their uniqueness. It took everything in me not to jump ahead in the book and unravel the secrets. (Okay, I'm guilty - I may have skimmed ahead a bit once or twice, but I couldn't help it! I had to know!) The main reason I can't give this book 5 stars is because of the errors, though. They were minor, but there were quite a bit of grammatical errors and a few time and plot inconsistencies. (For example, at one point, about the time of the move, it said Luxor found out her real name after her appendix surgery four months ago. However, it said the time of the "accident" was six months ago, but Verity used the discovery about Luxor's name and family to taunt Luxor during their fight. There was also a scene in one of the beginning chapters where Luxor was on the way home from the library and was confronted by the figures. What happened to the cat? She was carrying it, then the cat seemed nonexistent in the scene and not brought up again until a bit later.) The errors were not significant enough to distract from the book, though. Overall all, it was a good read and I really enjoyed this book.

READ MY REVIEW ON MY BLOG: https://sarainbooklandblog.blogspot.c...

Unveiled was the first paranormal that I read after a long time. I was intrigued by the whole concept and by the darkness of the premise. But if I reread the synopsis, I am even more convinced that the main themes mentioned, were not well explored.

As soon as you start the book, you're introduced to a protagonist who has a great deal going on in her life: an attempt murder to her best friend, an uncontrolled rage that threatens to burst at any time, a forced move to another city and terrible nightmares that haunt her every night. Since all these themes have been presented from the start, I would have expected the rest of the book to be more of an insight on what was going on, but I was surprised to see that often, all paranormal phenomena were put aside to leave space to some "high-school drama". I can't tell you my feelings about this choice, because if from a side I was a bit annoyed by the lack of answers, I was also growing fond of the characters thanks to the great amount of space given to several minor episodes and minor characters. For example, I was really drawn into the whole Luxor - Hunter parade: Hunter being a sexy, arrogant, spooky presence. Their love-hate relationship is what I usually like in a love story, but what I didn't like was how rushed looked their growing closer in the end, and how much and how sudden Hunter's character seems to change.

Speaking of Luxor, instead, almost 80% into the book and we have a protagonist who has seen possessed, red-eyed people walking, people entering a no-exit shop and never coming back, her body magically healing from all traumas.. and still, she's infuriatingly oblivious to all. I found it annoying how Luxor doesn't really care about what's happening to her, despite having the answer of what she might be right in front of her. I hated how by the end of the book she still acted like dumb, and refused to accept the truth...it didn't help at all in creating a bond between me and her!

All answers are given around the last 15% of the book and I was absolutely not satisfied by the space dedicated to what looks to be a really complicated story. A lot of elements and paranormal figures are introduced in what was a rushed and unbalanced conclusion and I had serious problems in understanding what was happening - to the point that I often needed to reread some passages for a couple of times! So what was my main problem with this book? Simple, I would have loved for the paranormal component to be more explored, to be a constant in the story and not just some background.

Still, the fact that you get a taste of this new world just at the end of the book, leaves me with a feeling of discontent that does not prevent me from reading book 2. My curiosity remains, my time with the characters was still pleasant, so I'm having hopes for book 2 to be more engaging than the first one!

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved the cover and the blurb. Everything I wanted in a PNR. I really struggled getting into the story at first. The thoughts of the characters and story didn’t flow as well as I wanted. At times I had to reread parts to make sure I didn’t miss something or to help it make sense. I felt it drug on a little bit and some of the editing was confusing. Words were missing or a word put in the wrong place when another one should be used. This was okay, I just pushed through because I wanted to see how it ended. About halfway through the book it grabbed my interest and I was intrigued enough to finish it. The story ended well enough that I would like to read the next book. For this being the authors first book, I do think it was done pretty well.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy in exchange of an honest review:

This got me hooked real fast!
I loved the characters and the fact I couldn't put it down because a lot of things were happening left and right.
Until you hit about 55-60% of the book, where things started to slow down.
I see some similarities with Fallen by Lauren Kate, which I loved when I was 12-13 (especially the romance), which made me eager to finish the story faster. I does end on a cliffhanger but it was worth the read.

I'd definitely enjoy the book more if I was a bit younger, because I couldn't 100% relate to Luxor, but I'd suggest it to readers that are about 17-18yo.

I was very excited to start this book based off the blurb, unfortunately it was difficult to get into. I struggled a lot with the beginning, I kept feeling like I had missed the first book and this was actually the 2nd. Things moved very quickly and didn't always flow well. I'm glad I stuck with it because about half way in it hooked me and I'm excited for book 2. For this being the authors debut, I'm excited to see how she grows and what is in store for her.

The actual story bones are incredible. It’s unique, yet familiar. I loved the intrigue and the little puzzle pieces dropped throughout the book leading to the big reveal. There were moments when I felt as lost as Luxor, though, because there seemed to be missing dialogue or actions. Definitely give this story a chance, it’s worth the work of reading through and the ending is wrapped up so prettily.

This starts off with a girl who has a falling out with her best friend over a guy but it results in some very strange events and consequences for her. Her entire life begins to unravel and fall into chaos, she thinks she is going crazy most of the time. Honestly as a reader I questioned her sanity alot of the time. But as the story progressed I found that something otherworldly was happening and this poor girl has been lied to her entire life by the person she trust most her mom. Its hard enough being a teen girl and trying to navigate life and just figure out who you are , but she has a whole different side of self discovery she has to go through.
Overall this story has two things that I love, paranormal events shrouded in mystery and a hot bad boy taking interest in the misfit girl and helping her navigate the ride of her life.

I was so excited to read this book. The blurb sounds great and I absolutely love the cover. But I was disappointed. The beginning was very intriguing and I was hoping that the whole story would be like this. Unfortunately, it wasn't (for me). I had a feeling it was dragged too long. About halfway through the book, I finally felt an interest in the story. It became more intense and held my interest until the end. I think that if this book was shorter, it would be better.

I was given this ARC by the author for a honest review. This story is easy to read and definitely a page turner.
Sixteen year old Ellie comes from a wealthy family, she's a cheerleader, track star, a beauty and the most popular girl in her school, she has it all except love from her family. One fateful day Ellie and her best friend from childhood have an argument which turns violent and both girls end up hospitalized. Months later, Ellie awakens from a coma to realize from this day forword her life will never be the same, she has changed both mentally and physically. Her parents aren't her parents but in reality are her aunt and uncle and they changed her name with no explanation, her legal name is Luxor not Ellie. Luxor is left asking, who are my parents, where are they and who am I?" She has been accused of hurting her friend, her family is sued losing everything they own and told they must leave prestious Hampton Cove. Her aunt and Lexor pack up the few possesions they have and leave for Brighton Falls to start a new life together, but Brighton Falls is not what it seems to be, everyone seems to be something other than what they apear to be and they have secrets. Luxor has had nightmares since she was small which only intensify with her arrival in Brighton Falls and the people she associates with seem to know more about her and her secrets than they should. They have information that she wants but no one is forthcoming with that information. Hunter, good looking, antagonist and secretative takes an interest in Luxor that makes her nervous and anxious but she can feel they have a connection that she can't ignore. Hunter comes to her rescue when she is involved with some terrifying situations, who is he, what does he want and can she trust him are all questions she asks herself. Luxor is on a mission, to get the answers she so desperately wants but to what end. Just when some of her questions are answered and things are starting to make sense the book ends and leaves us with more questions than answers. I enjoyed reading this book and hopefully won't have to wait too long for the story to continue with more of the answers along with the adventure.

Interesting to say the least.
.
Right off the bat this fantasy starts off with a bang. So much happening there’s no lead up just bang. And somehow it worked. Throughout the story gradually unravels and and there was definitely elements that I hadn’t seen in a book before.
.
The plot is interesting, full of suspense and mystery and action, but it also has its unique twist which had me intrigued from the first chapter. You couldn’t help but want to dive deeper and with the rich, informative writing, it truly captivated you and transports you to this awesome word. The world build needs a little more detail for me, it felt like I was getting two different tones and setting. I’m not sure if that was intentional but some may not like that, I however was, intrigued in some capacity but other got confused.
.
The characters were great, really clear and defined, no shortage of drama and growth on every part. All characters are unique and each hold their own set of roles that get deeper as the story progresses so you really have to pay attention to the details. Hidden messages are also scattered throughout which set it apart from other fantasy mysteries.
.
The writing style was different for me as it was told in 3rd person POV so it was interesting to get used to when it came to commentary. All in all I enjoyed this book, it was different, had dark tones and shrouded in mystery and suspense. An enjoyable read for anyone.

Book received from the author. Voluntarily reviewing and all opinions are objective and my own.

This was an okay read for me. I do have quite a few negatives unfortunately. First, this is a LONG book--longer than it needed to be for sure. The same story could have been conveyed in less pages. I feel that much of the book was filler, so it wasn’t very exciting. I also found this to be a love child between Lauren Kate’s Fallen series and Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments. I do understand that these authors did not create the concepts that were also used in this book, but it’s how it was executed. The beginning bits reminded me of a Fallen copy, while the ending had some City of Bones vibes. BUT, I will also say I did not feel this book was a direct cop by any means. It was some scenes/situations that reflected, but it wasn’t a direct copy. The book could have also used another round of line edits, since there were commas missing everywhere.

A benefit of its length is that the building romance between Luxor and Hunter was not rushed. A bit of a slow burn, in fact. I also do enjoy both characters. I find Hunter quite funny, and really had no complaints against Luxor. I enjoyed the beginning of the book, and the ending. I really did find that middle slow.

I’m giving it three stars, because I really did find myself bored at parts of it, and frustrated at others. But the ending of this has compelled me to keep going--and also these GORGEOUS covers!

Can I just say before anything else, what a beautiful cover!

It took me what feels like forever to finish this book. Now normally if a book is a decent length, it means it’s a detailed story, giving depth to the characters contained inside, but this book seemed very wordy and mistakes with correct wording and grammar. I had to re read many passages, and chapters....

All of that said, the book starts with a pretty action packed scene involving Luxor and her best friend Verity. Popular, beautiful and wealthy, what else could disrupt this girls life? How about an uncontrolled rage?! Also we learn she’s suffered some sexual abuse, but that isn’t discussed and is forgotten about.
Moving away after being in a coma due to the severity of the injuries sustained after bringing down the roof (literally!) Luxor is off to a new house/home, a new town and school.
So I loved the push pull relationship with her and Hunter, I loved Evie and her comedic relief, and especially that she loves food! Ayla is someone we’re introduced to early on too, but she’s very reserved (we find out why later).
No sure how I really feel about Luxor, she’s faced with red eyed monsters, weird situations and she remains oblivious to it all. That being said, I will attempt book 2, just to see what happens.

Unveiled: The Chronicles of Luxor Everstone
Jacklyn Daher

This is not my typical read, although I have read books about angels, demons, and such before. I will say this book took me a while to get into, and at times I was feeling a bit lost, there was so much going on, and so much of it wasn't making sense to me. But the longer I read, the more I enjoyed it and things became clearer. Luxor gets into a fight with her best friend, and crazy things happen, and it changes her life. So much that she is forced to move, her relationship with her mom is even more strained than it was before, her new town and school are so different. She meets Hunter who she is drawn and attracted to at times but at others she just wants to forget he exists. So many things make so much more sense to me by the end of the book. Hunter is always there when Luxor needs him, and becomes a great ally of hers. It was a rather long read and at times I wondered if it was worth it, but I am glad I stuck with it and finished it. I will most likely read the next one as I really want to know the rest of the story!

Unveiled is a well written, urban fantasy set in Victoria, Australia.

The book is written through the point of view of Luxor Everstone, formally known as Ellie Lockhart.

After being the main cause of a devastating accident at her prestigious private school that resulted in her best friend being hurt, Luxor is banished from Hampton Cove to Brighton Falls... a one shop town that is a fair cry from her former city dwelling life.

But all is not as it seems in Brighton Falls, Luxor is still plagued with nightmares including in the daytime! Is she going insane? Is it a chemical reaction to her medications? Why is she seeing black hooded figures with red eyes who smell of sulphur? And who is this other new kid called Hunter at her new school? Why does he always appear when Luxor is in strife?

This book was a real page turner for me! I couldn’t put it down! I loved the thrill and the taunting nature of the book, Jacklyn Daher has done a fantastic job at her first book debut and I can’t wait to read more of Luxor (and Hunters life) and hopefully get more answers and more of a background story on every other character we are introduced too!!

Unveiled was an incredible fantastical read! I was caught in a world where angels and demons existed, and it was incredible!

This book was full of mystery and wonder, and I couldn't help but be swept in it all. It was a magical read that kept me on the edge of my toes, and full of action, especially towards the end, not to spoil, but it is MY FAVOURITE scene ever in the book.

It was also slightly creepy. It sent chills in the atmosphere and kept me on my toes.

And Luxor's relationship with Hunter: pure gold! Just adored it!

It also left me on a cliffhanger, so I am incredibly intrigued and eager to get my hands on book two. If it's as thrilling as the first, I will be disappointed at all!

For a debut novel, it was incredible. I don't read fantasy that much, but the blurb intrigued me, and the book captivated me. Highly recommended

A new twist on a classic Nephilim story.

This cover is what drew me in, I love love love it!

Anyways,

Luxor is a teen girl with drama following her. Unbeknownst to her she isn’t really a normal teen, and her life is slowly unraveling to unveil the truth of what she is, who her friends are, and why that super beautiful boy is always hanging around.

Luxor is in serious denial, she has so many strange things happen and she either doesn’t ask the basic and obvious question (but focuses on the trivial unhelpful details) or she just rides along acting like all is normal in her strange world. She is very confusing, but it’s a confusing time in her life so we mustn’t judge to harshly.

DNF. Really needs an editor to do some line edits for clarification, get rid of unnecessary conversations and internal dialogue, and “she did this, then she did this…” that hamper and slow down the story. Pacing was awful and flow was disjointed. Also, I cringed reading “…Luxor and I’s antics.” That should be my, not I’s. The author has a deep love for the words touché and façade, which show up much more frequently than is normal, especially for teens. The banter between Luxor and Hunter, and Luxor’s angst and snark got very old and tiring quickly. I got half way through before calling it quits. I’m surprised I got that far- kept hoping it would pick up and get better but it didn’t. I think it has a lot of potential, could be really good, but, like I said, it really needs an editor.

Luxor’s story is up and down. You don’t know what is going on fully. In the beginning it’s a bang. Then Luxor moves to a new place and starts a new school. She meets a few people like Evie, Ayla and Hunter. There is something going on but it seems like a secret that she has to figure out. Things are happening but they don’t seem to be real or just a dream. Hunter is always around. Luxor isn’t sure if she hates him or wants to date him. Evie and Ayla are friends that always has her back and seem to show up a lot when she needs them or when she doesn’t need them.
