Taking on supervillains has never been a problem for Jim (aka Kid Sensation). It’s what he’s been trained to do, and he does it well. Completely intrepid in the face of danger, he’s never shied away from a crisis, no matter how difficult the assignment or how great the menace. But now he faces a task that even he dreads: hunting down his friend and mentor, Mouse.
Initially hesitant to believe reports that his mentor has gone rogue, mounting evidence and his own firsthand observations soon leave no doubt of the truth: Mouse is now an enemy fully intent on destroying the Alpha League – the world’s premier team of superheroes. Taking him down, however, won’t be easy. Not only is he a brilliant strategist and tactician, but as the leader of the Alpha League, Mouse knows all of his colleagues’ tactics. Their secrets. Their weaknesses.
As the pursuit of his mentor becomes more frenzied and intense, it soon becomes evident that Mouse’s actions have dire implications not just for the Alpha League, but the entire world. However, despite being isolated and alone, Mouse is a formidable opponent who can never be taken lightly, and it soon becomes evident that even Jim’s incredible slate of superpowers may not be enough to stop him.
Isolation was the 8th instalment of Kevin Hardman's fun YA Kid Sensation superhero series! This is actually the 10th instalment if one counts the two spin-off books and despite that high volume I'm still quite happy with the quality of this series over the length of it. As always this series delivered a good mix of action, drama, humour, a touch of romance, and plenty of superpowered happenings.
The story was split between Jim's (Kid Sensation) personal life and his life as a budding superhero. In his regular life Jim had to learn to live alone for the first time after his mother and grandparents went on their trip. Well, not quite alone as he did have his fiancée there. That political arrangement was, of course, still causing issues with Jim and his long term girlfriend Electra. Jim's personal life was pretty complicated which made the fact that his mentor, the Alpha Team leader, had apparently gone rouge a big problem! Jim had to figure out why Mouse was seemingly working to take down the Alpha League and gathering weapons capable of destroying Earth.
It ended up being a fun enough tale. The characters in this series are a likeable enough batch and we got to met a lot of our old favourites in this instalment. Which was good as I though a lack of the regular support characters hurt the last instalment. The rouge Mouse plot felt pretty standard bottle episode stuff but we did get hints that Hardman was setting up a few other interesting ongoing story arcs that could come into play later in the series. On a personal side it was good to see Jim growing up a bit and further developing his relationship with the likes of Alpha Prime, Electra, Smokey, and even Mishtal.
If the story had a downside it was the way Jim attracts so much female attention. Kevin Hardmen should be wary of going the harem path as I feel like that would ruin the series.
I'd also be up for more spin-off series set in this world as while I like Jim I feel like the world is developed enough to follow other characters and still deliver a good quality tale.
All in all this was a fun instalment in a series that is definitely one of the better YA superhero series on the go right now.
Rating: 3.5 stars. I'll round up to 4 stars again.
Audio Note: Mikael Naramore did a good job with the audio.
Jim's mentor, Mouse, appears to have gone off the rails after an incident in the lab where he was hit by a surge of some kind. After a couple of altercations at headquarters, Jim is starting to agree with Alpha Prime and the rest of the team that Mouse has gone rogue. However, the odd clues he keeps finding and with Electra acting increasingly strangely, Jim is sure there is more to Mouse's disappearance than the evidence shows. I really enjoyed this latest book about Kid Sensation and the Alpha League. I found myself fully immersed in the world and didn't want it to end. My only complaint is that there is a little too much dry explanation and Jim sometimes talks like an old man rather than a teenager.
Isolation was a breath of fresh air after book 7 which was overall okay, we finally learn a little more about Jim´s struggling family dynamic with his father and ¨new¨ cousins, overall the storyline was okay as we finally see Jim knocked down a peg but, it made no sense to me how Jim can ever really bee ambushed or tricked between his telepathy, empathy, and coeval cognitive abilities it should make almost omniscient. I can see the author really tried to make the female characters interesting, all of them are just too perfect, and 2d between riches, good looks, perfect personalities and superpowers there all kind of boring. This series is evolving into a harem anime.

I did enjoy this book. I like the fact that it showed that he is still a teenager. This teenager is going to have to learn that everything is not his fault. I have a feeling this is going to become a problem in the future, but who knows.
I love the Kid Sensation books and am always excited when a new one comes out. This series (and In fact the author) is the only one that I leave my comfortable genre of mystery audio books for and venture into the science fiction world because I know that what ever I am going to listen to is going to be captivating, entertaining and action packed. This book didn't let me down. I loved it. The characters are just out of this world, literally and on book 8 they feel like old family friends but the author keeps the series fresh by introducing you to new characters and bad guys. The author writes like it is a movie and I could very easily see it being made into a film or at the very least for tv, with so many twist in the story and action it would have to be a big budget production. I can't wait for the next book. Jim aka Kid Sensation is busy attending parties with his friends and trying not to get recruited to a new super hero team, so he misses a number of phone calls from his friend and mentor Mouse. That is until he gets the message Mouse has gone rogue and is attacking his former friends and colleagues. Jim Is reluctant to believe that Mouse the leader of the Alpha team, the world's premier super hero team would turn his back on what he has built up, until he witnesses it for himself. Now he has to stop his friend, his mentor and more importantly the man who has taught him every thing he knows about being a super hero. Mouse knows every body in the team and beining the teams inventor he has the capability and knowledge to use there strengths and weaknesses against them. With each attack it seems that Mouse isn't on the run and In fact is working towards a goal. Can Jim work out what Mouse's plan is before he completes it? Or is something more going on than meets the eye? Michael Naramore is one of my favourite male narrators and I am so glad he continues to voice Kid Sensation and his friends. He does so many different voices I think he might be a super hero called the voice.
Despite some nitpicks here and there through the series, I have enjoyed aspects of it, but this book put the final nail in the coffin, so I've decided to shelf the series indefinitely.
What killed it for me is Electra. She's a childish, manipulative, emotionally abusive girlfriend to the MC. Countless times, despite an absolutely insane amount of crap on his plate that would be an emotional black hole for any human being, Jim goes out of his way to make sure Electra knows how much he cares about her, and to always make time for her. Meanwhile, she repeatedly punishes him for shit he isn't responsible for, and shit that is outside his control. Then in his book Smokey (Jim's best friend) turns around and defends Electra's behaviour. That was it. That killed it for me. if the MC was in the wrong I could totally respect his best friend calling him on it, but the MC is trying to balance a thousand plates in the air and instead of just saying "This situation is too complex or difficult for me", Electra goes out of her way to make the MC feel like shit at every fucking turn.
I just can't enjoy the series anymore with that being so central to the MC's storyline.

Okay, so my kids and I really love this series and this one was better than the last book but there were a few things that we found really irritating. So, we weren't a huge fan of the incarnate side of the story in the last book and we were hoping to see less of Electra but she was a bigger part of this one and from the other reviews it looks like we aren't alone in wanting Jim end that relationship for good.... Myshtal is a much better fit and by far less demanding and jealous. It does always amaze us how slow Jim can be to figure things out but it does age him appropriately- teens don't fully think things through every time. Overall it was another fun ride and the narration was top notch as always! I love that these are pretty clean books with very little if any language, mild violence, and teen friendly relationships without bedroom scenes - there is some eluding to deeper relationships in older characters but so far that's as far as it goes (hoping they continue to stay clean). I can't wait to see what happens next!
It’s always a good day when a new KS story comes out! This one is some twisted fun, with a plot that - while using a basic trope - manages to shake things up nicely, especially in “the feelz”. It’s *good* to see more of Jim acting in real world semi-normal events. Everything up to now has constant action, with often heavy implications, so a “simpler” and much more personal story is a good breather and a catch-up opportunity. We still get a surprise visit with interesting foreshadowing, but mostly we get a reinforcement of each relationship Jim has with all the major (and even some less-seen) characters. Good stuff. Oh, there’s still great action, but this book is about strengthening the plot, not expanding it.
Kid Sensation is back and like the familiar home cooking it brings back all those warm feelings and comfort. Being a teen and a superhero gives great breadth to what Jim can go through emotional, and as a hero so it gives plenty for Hardman to work with although he does seem to have an amazing amount of women/ girls who are great with him. The typical little twists are also there as well to keep us guessing and a few hints about what Jim can be like as he grows up.
I was enjoying the story, until I saw the author was using the word droned instead of said or any other similar word. Droned says to me the sentence is spoken in an emotionless monotone, which did not fit the scenes. It got too annoying to continue.
This book came at a great time, since everyone is isolated too. I loved the story, and was happy to see Kid doing fun stuff. He needed to party some instead always being serious all the time. Great read, looking forward to next book.
I love the Kid Sensation series because every time I think it can't get any better a new book comes out & blows my mind... I can't wait to find out what comes next.
I'm waiting for the epic arc now that the characters have been introduced, but every book seems like a deadend. This one even began with the retcon of the last one.
On top of that, the book felt a bit thin at places, as it was written too much in haste.
Another adventure for our intrepid teen and with complicated relationships and loyalties being put to breaking point Jim is going to have to make some choices to give us a great listen. Narration is on point as usual and i just wait for more from this series each time
The book was fun but I have to agree, Electra is rather annoying. I’m not sure what her value is for the story. Also, very minor complaint, he Jim ever going to be older than 16? I got to say he had a real sucky year.
Mouse appears to have gone rouge and is attacking HQ. Great mystery, character growth, and new friends. Another fun, action packed adventure in true Kid Sensation style.
It was a good read. This is the 8th book of the series and it just gets more and more exciting! I just noticed that the book cover (Electra) does not relate to any part of the story.
Whoa! Such a great book! And, Elektra wasn't as annoying in this book! Looking forward to the next one! Got to figure out what I'm going to read until then!
