Hometown Love #3

Otterly Scorched

Rate this book
It’s been a lot of years and another lifetime since Dax Trevino was a playboy detective for the Franklin Police Department. He’s been through hell and back, and now he just wants to be left alone, so he can cuddle his otters.

When two of his babies are kidnapped in the middle of the night, and Claws and Effect Pet Detectives are called to the rescue, quiet, broody Dax never expects to be tackled and handcuffed by the only woman he ever regretted being a douchebag to all those years ago.

Harley Blake has spent her entire life taking care of her accident-prone father with a fondness for dead animals, and her forty-year-old brother who refuses to grow up. The last thing she needs is another complication in her life, and Detective Douchebag is at the top of the list.

Dax might not be a cop anymore, and he might have outgrown his one-and-done player status, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to get burned a second time and fall for his charms. The infuriating man already branded a mark on her heart years ago, making sure she’d never forget him. Besides, she has a case to solve for the guy, and this is just business.

But the sarcasm starts flying, there are a gaggle of adorable otters who need to be cuddled, a Bandit Von Trash Panda who just wants to play poker, pot brownies, and squirrels dressed for a wedding... at a funeral. Things are heating up—and not just from the small tree fire after the grenade went off—and this man is suddenly simplifying her life instead of making it worse.

Harley knows she won’t escape this time without being Otterly Scorched.

I don’t want to date him. Dating is another complication in my life I don’t need.
Ovaries: He pulled muskrat chunks out of the spokes of our bicycle tires.
I know.
Ovaries: With his bare hands.
I know! I still don’t want to date him.
Ovaries: Remember that time when he was shirtless?

I am dead. OTTERLY DEAD. (see what I did there? This book has got me punning FFS) But seriously though. I'm dead. My tombstone will read:
Here lies Lana
Died laughing her tits off

This is no joke, people! I'm pretty sure I quite literally laughed my tits off. I'll be billing Tara Sivec for my implants. I'm totes blaming her for this IBTC shit I got going now. Ok, so it's not her fault, but still. This book was freaking hilarious. I'm talking laugh so hard you have tears in your eyes hilarious. I'm talking uncontrollable sort of laughing that shakes the bed at night, forcing your snoring husband to wake up to glare at you sort of laughing. OMG it was so good!
It’s fine. It was no big deal. There was a crab I thought was dead that wasn’t really dead, and he didn’t appreciate the tiny T-shirt I was trying to put on him that said Don’t Be Crabby. In conclusion, I got two stitches in my finger when he clamped on and wouldn’t let go, and we now have a pet in the guest bathroom tub that Davidson named Leonardo Da Pinchi.”

Now, if you've read Branded, Dax will be a familiar character. It's been a hot minute since I read that book, so I barely remembered anything. What? I have the memory of a fly, okay? Luckily, this is a complete standalone, so you get all of the needed character facts.

I'm a huge fan of banter, and I swear, no one writes it quite like Sivec. The woman is the queen of witty banter. And when you put Dax and Harley, the banter is GOLD. These two have history back from their police days, back when Dax was more of a womanizing douchebag rather than the grumpy, tatted and brooding man he is today. Harley is an emotionally stunted grump herself, who is too busy running her business and taking care of her father and older brother to remember the names of the men she dates. God but they were perfect together.

The story was fast paced and hilarious. I don't think there was one chapter that I didn't feel like I was going to pee myself laughing. The banter, the sexual chemistry, the characters, all of it was ON POINT. And did I mention the cast of hilarious secondary characters? Because yassss, honey. I was so here for them. I didn't know who was better, the meddling Nanci, Harley's crazy father with his "fun boxes" of taxidermy, or Harley's 40 going on 12 year old brother. I loved all of them.

My only minor quibble was the backstory of what made Dax into the man he is today. A lot of it happens in Branded, but since I didn't recall much of that book having read it years ago, I wish it was further fleshed out on the pages in this one.

Having said that, this book was otterly entertaining. Did I mention that there's adorable otters in this? Because OMG the otters. If you're looking for a true laugh out loud romantic comedy that will keep you glued to the pages and laughing your tits off, look no further. Seriously. READ IT.

This is one of those crazy, cute rom-coms starring:

a redeemed douchebag who gets in touch with his inner Martha Stewart

a kickass girl who has not an ounce of "girliness"

crazy-antic families who may or may not be into taxidermy

and way too many otter puns. And if you are thinking, "is there such a thing as too many otter puns?" I think I just proved that there are.

Stop that. You aren't even the right kind of otter. Go back to the ocean where you belong.

So, you know - not Shakespeare, but fine for when you are PMSing or something.

He's better than all the otters...

To be honest, I wasn't sure I'd fall in love with the hero. At our first meeting, I wasn't sure he was my type. It's not often my hero is mistaken for a Ma'am. Then I saw him, got to know him a little better and it definitely turned into love at the second attempt.

There's one thing I can always count on when reading a Tara Sivec romance...laughing until I'm almost crying. Otterly Scorched did not disappoint. The storyline kept me entertained from the beginning until the end. The characters were lovable, funny, and a little rough around the edges. I was enjoying seeing the romance develop between Harley and Dax. Their connection jumped off the pages and I knew they were meant for each other.

While this story was captivating and the otters were so cute, I was a little frustrated with Harley's dad and brother. I have never been a fan when the child has to parent the parent, and in this case, the brother too. I just don't get it. I'm all about helping your family, but you have to draw a line. Harley enables them to keep being irresponsible. I liked the dad and brother, I just found that part of the story annoying.

Another fantastic story by Tara Sivec that left me smiling and sighing in contentment. If you like stories with cute animals, sexy heroes who don't mind cooking and cleaning, and a romance that was HOT, I highly recommend giving Otterly Scorched a try.

Five years ago Dax and Harley were cops. He was also a real famous ladies' man around town. And even though Harley pretended otherwise, she was still mega attracted to him.

Then suddenly Dax left and they did not see each other again until now - when Dax is screaming around the animal sanctuary like a crazy old woman.

Because?! Because his beloved Otters are missing!

WTF you might ask? We and Harley are asking that too.

How come that a ultra charming, suit-wearing, mega-flirty cop ends up ... here. With Otters? Looking and acting like a grumpy lumberjack. A really hot one.

What happened?!

Let the fun times begin ...

LOL! ADORABLE!

I loved reading this!

First of all ... who knew Otters were so adorable?! I didn't even know they were able to stay out of the water for longer periods of time! I want one too!

Harley and Dax. Both are not the immature and young kids we get in most books. We're close to 40 here. Even though you might not notice it all the time. Lol.

Harley never really had a relationship. And Dax only used to have one-night things. But that was years ago. Now he's a Otter whisperer? What happened there?

It's all really adorable and sad and heartbreaking.
But most of all it's very sweet and hilarious and I just adored this whole story.

I also really loved Harley's dad and brother! LOL - they need to get their own TV show - some kind of Tiger King Pet Detectives kind of thing. LOL!!

This was a really great romantic comedy mystery thingy - I loved every second of it!

I so wouldn't mind staring at some otters and some Dax on Netflix one day soon!

OTTERLY SCORCHED was such an adorable & funny Otter-Mystery Love Story! I loved it! Hurry to your nearest amazon for your own Dax ... this one is MINE!

A tiny little thing that bothered me a bit. Especially in the beginning. I don't like it when chapters end with a little cliffy and then the next chapter does NOT start where it should, but at a later time. I want to know what happened in that moment, not fast forward and just get told about it in a few lines :(

3 Cosy and Cute Stars

Dax Trevino has changed a lot since he worked for the Franklin Police Department. There was a time when he was a tough, very cocky playboy detective, but now Dax is happy just with his animal sanctuary and his otters. When two of his otters are kidnapped in the middle of the night, Dax calls the cops hysterical, once they realise it's not a case of child endangerment/kidnapping they refer his case to Claws and Effect Pet Detectives.

Harley Blake took over Claws and Effect Pet Detectives from her dad, happily giving up her job as a cop, what she doesn't expect is to come across Dax - the cop she had a massive crush on and who was way too arrogant.

Harley isn't good with relationships, not always even knowing she is in one, so despite her attraction to Dax she is determined to keep things professional, and appreciate his fine form from afar, Dax however is determined to prove he's not the man he was and who he is today is perfect for her.

Overall, I thought this book was a cute and easy read, there were moments that had me chuckling a little and a fair few moments that had me smiling. Yet I didn't adore the read, I wanted bit more from the main and secondary characters and the comedy didn't exactly have me chuckling as potently as I would have liked.

I always know when I pick up a Tara Sivec book I’m going to laugh a lot and Otterly Scorched brings a whole lot of laughs, but it was also was quite touching. This is a romance years in the making, from a bar flirtation, to a workplace feud, to several years apart; these two finally have a chance to get it together but doing so brings hilarity, emotion, crazy family members, friends with questionable advice, and those pesky feelings they both have trouble dealing with. I loved every minute of this story even when I figured out the “bad guys” early one; I was waiting to see how it would all pan out.

Dax Trevino has seen a lot in his forty some odd years, two stints in the military, time on the police force, recovery from a road side bomb, and earning a degree in something near and dear to his heart despite his father’s wishes. Dax has daddy issues and a lot of scars both mentally and physically but working at the animal rescue, The Backyard, helps until two of his beloved otters go missing.

Harley Blake realized pretty quickly she was never meant to be a part of the police department and then when her father fell and was injured she knew it was time to step in and take over the family business Claws and Effect Pet Detectives. She loves the work and between that and taking care of her accident prone father and her older brother who is more toddler than man, Harley has no time for relationships and to be honest she’s bad at them, like seriously bad because she usually has a hard time remembering the guy’s name she’s dating. When she goes out on a case to recover missing otters, she’s floored that the man who is emotional over the loss of the creatures is Dax, because he looks and acts nothing like the suave ladies man he use to be.

I loved Dax’s domestic god side and the fact that he planned to use his animal rescue to help special needs kids and veterans. Ms. Sivec did a great job balancing that side of him with his macho side and it made for a very interesting character because you never knew which side was going to come out to play. Harley is one of those no nonsense, hard working, doesn’t take crap off of anyone heroines and I adored her. It was interesting watching her fall under Dax’s spell and the way he crept into her life taking care of her and things in her life without her even realizing it (at least right away).

Harley’s father and brother added a lot of hilarity and flare to an already fun filled story and then there were the otter scenes which were otterly fantastic.

If you need to laugh, or just want a feel good romance then Otterly Scorched is definitely a book you’ll want to check out. I loved every minute of it.

Banter-filled fun

She’s the grump. He’s the sunshine. Well... at least he is once he starts chasing his girl, lol. I loved the absolutely hysterical, banter-filled dynamic between this couple and the nonstop comedy that follows them on their adventures. This hero is a reformed playboy who openly admits that he used to be a tool - but he's not that guy anymore. It took one life-changing event for him to change his ways, so when the one woman he saw potential with comes strolling back into his life, he's not going to let her get away again. I'm usually not a fan of playboys or second chance-adjacent romances, but this one worked for me on so many levels. It made me laugh from start to finish, the easygoing vibes brightened my day, and the hidden depth to the story made it an even richer read.

The story follows Harley, a former cop-turned-animal detective whose life is a hot mess. She's too busy trying to wrangle her family members to have any time for herself, so she's grumpy and a little intense. When Harley's newest case leads her to Dax, the playboy who *almost* charmed her into bed once, she isn't sure what to think. Dax is nothing like the charming and carefree guy she remembers, and he seems to have completely changed his ways. As the two spend time on the case together, Dax remembers why he always thought of Harley as the girl who got away. Now that she's back in his life, Dax is determined to win her over this time.

I was a little nervous when I read the prologue and Dax was a shameless manhoe, but my concerns were quickly put to rest when we meet him again in present day. He is ADORABLE, and I mean that in a sexy way. He does everything he can to make Harley's life easier, and I loved how persistent he was. Harley doesn't make things easy on him, and Dax proves again and again that he thinks she's worth the effort. The vibe is just so upbeat and lighthearted, with as many swoons as there are laughs. The outlandish plot paired with truly memorable characters gives this such effortless charm. It's only loosely related to the other books in the series, and is easy to read as a standlone. I loved being back in this world, and the unpredictable storyline kept me on my toes in the best of ways. A definite win for me.

Audio note: The audio is great! Dual narration with CJ Bloom and James Cavenaugh, two very solid narrators. They infuse plenty of humor and emotion into their performances, and I was completely sold on the audio in the first chapter. You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there, lol. The runtime is perfect for a one-day listen (under 9 hours), and the low angst vibes are ideal for this format. It's also a slow burn romance with only a couple of steamy scenes, so it works for the office as well. Though... you might find yourself snort-laughing or getting too wrapped up in the story to fully concentrate on work. I definitely recommend this on audio.

Dude. Dudette. Person. Alien life form. Whoever is reading this review.... Why are you reading this review instead of reading this book?

What can I say about this book? Well, it's freaking funny. It has people in it. It has animals in it, specifically dead and live ones. (cue wide eyes)

There might be scenes where the hot dog finds its way into the hot dog bun. But don't worry, the hot dog doesn't get stuck or eaten. No hot dogs were harmed in this book.

Do you like cheese? The characters in this book looooove cheese. Cheese is good. Cheese makes the world go 'round. If you don't like cheese, you're dead to me and you might not like all the cheesey scenes... but you don't count if you don't like cheese.

So, let's recap. This book is very funny. It might have schmexy times. The characters might like food. And animals might be present for all of the above.

Have I sold you on this book yet? Do you want to read it? Or do you just want to eat it because I have now made you hungry? Go make a sandwich or something, with lots of cheese.

Seriously though... This book took me back to the author's beginning. The hilariousness of this book is top notch. And I'm not just saying that because she's one of my favorite authors. I'm saying that because IT'S TRUE. And the characters. HAHAHAHA. One reminded me a little bit of Drew. You remember him, right? There are some fantastic characters in this book.

Why are you still reading this review? Just go read the book. You won't be disappointed. If you are, well, then you don't have a sense of humor. (Sorry, not sorry.)

DNF at 28%

Couldn’t get into this one, despite loving the other 2 books in the series. Couldn’t connect to the characters and it was more silly than funny and bordered on cringey at times.

I usually love a romcom but this kind of reminded me of Pippa Grant’s writing in that it tried so hard to be quirky and different that it fell flat. Also the taxidermy stuff was creepy as hell and not what I want to read about.

Jed and I didn’t get off to a great start, and Beautiful Lie was infuriating. Yet, here I am giving this author a third chance because her blurbs and covers are like candy to me. I’m so glad I picked this up.

This book is perfectly, otterly OTT - banter, characters, romance, plot, pace, dialogue, craziness, family, animals. It’s all just designed to smile and laugh, and that I did!

If you’ve read Rachel Van D’s romcoms and enjoyed them, this is for you.

If Ace Ventura had you laughing, this is for you.

This book is in the vein of dry, OTT humor that people either love or hate, and I personally love it.

I only have one complaint. I think the author took the MMC’s domestic side a tiny bit too far toward the end. The balance between shredding his man card and letting him be quirky edged toward his man card being lost. It dimmed the romance element just a little. Maybe, the ice sculpture was a lil much;) lol.

Anyway, this was a true lol read for me.

Note for author about an oopsie - Page 67… shes wearing “leggings and a hoodie.” Page 71… she’s suddenly waking up wearing what she had before she showered and changed for the night… look down and realize I’m still wearing the same clothes I had on yesterday—skinny jeans and a plain white T-shirt. I spot my flannel shirt folded up neatly on the foot of my bed and my ankle boots placed next to each other on the carpet directly below it.

Like every other Tara book, Otterly Scorched will have you holding your bladder. It's hilarious! The visuals running through my mind while reading her words are the best! As always, I question, "Where they hell does she come up with this stuff?" LOL Tara is a One of a Kind, Comedic Genius!

You got two ex cops, Dax and Harley. One is now a Pet Detective and the other is a loud, screaming otter lover. Cough Cough.....I mean an animal sanctuary owner who loves all his babies...COUGH... animals.

When Dax and Harley run into each other again, sparks fly but so do some hands. Their love/hate relationship is perfect while it last. The banter between them is nonstop and had some tears running down my face. Let's not forget the incredible side characters too! Harley's dad and brother bring tons of laughs into this book as well. That's what I love about Tara's writing. She never leaves her side characters in the background for too long. They always become such unforgettable characters right along side her main characters.

You all have to read this book!! It will brighten up your day, make you laugh A LOT and make your heart warm and fuzzy! It's Otterly Outrageous!

Who knew a story about otters could be so funny?!?!

I really enjoyed this story about Dax and Harley! This is story of the past reconnecting in the present. These two are in completely different places than they were then. It give the book a certain charm that fits in perfectly with all the humor. The characters had this great chemistry together that made for hilarious banter. I am a huge fan of good banter so bonus points because this book knocked it out of the otter sanctuary. I loved this story want watching in a weird and quirky way they reconnected. So many laughs and a little bit of steam! This is definitely a book worth picking up!

Sometimes you just need an escape that takes you into ridiculous situations, with crazy humor, quirky characters, and a lot of heart. And Otterly Scorched is just what I needed after some heavier reads.

We have met Dax Trevino before. He loves working with otters and now owns an animal sanctuary. But apparently the tatted, bearded, gruff, bitter, mean loner he is today is not at all who he used to be. In his past, he was a charming, flirty, cocky, playboy police officer and eventually military man. But he is finally settling into the life he wants. So when two of his precious otter babies go missing, he goes a bit berserk.

Harley Blake also used to be a cop. In fact as a rookie, she shared a meaningful encounter with Dax followed by an antagonistic work relationship. She has also moved onto new work as a pet detective in her family business. She is tough, sarcastic, focused on work, and a caretaker for her family. She does not seem to have the time or interest in relationships.

Coming together for his missing otter case is going to shake up their lives. Both have changed in many ways, but their witty banter, teasing, and chemistry are still there. And she still challenges him. And as these two spend time together, they both start to grow and change even more.

I absolutely loved Dax. There are several versions of Dax in this story until we are bared down to the real one. I loved his true self and softer side. The ways he starts to care for her and gradually domesticate her are so sweet. Under that gruff exterior is a totally different man. And she tends to calm him and let him be himself. They are the most unlikely of couples, but complement each other so well.

Their friends and family add more drama and ridiculousness. Her dad and brother are hilarious and the things coming out of their mouth and minds are really out there. The colorful, unfiltered language adds to the whole over-the-top fun of the book. There are also some cameos that Tara Sivec fans will recognize as well.

And then there is the mystery of who kidnapped the otters and why...

This is a laugh-out-loud, entertaining, heartfelt, sexy, otter-some adventure, and enemies-to-lovers story. It brings all the smiles and the feels. I want to go play with the otters now...

How do you convince a woman who hates dating to fall in love with you?
For Dax Trevino, all it takes is two otters.
Ok, that's an exaggeration, but the otters certainly get his foot in the door.

Harley Blake and Dax have a history, sort of. They bonded over drinks one night at a local bar, but under more sober circumstances, Harley couldn't stand Dax's over-the-top douchiness during their brief time as co-workers. They reunite years later when two otters, Otterham Lincoln and Christotterpher Columbus, disappear from the Backyard Animal Sanctuary that Dax runs. Harley, now working as a pet detective (yes, I guess they really exist), is on the case.

Like the author's other books, there are a lot of over the top moments, and LOL ones, especially the commentary from Harley's ovaries, who are very interested in Dax.

Ovaries: Sooo, we're just gonna ignore the fact he looks like that now, are we? LOL, okay, sure.

Ovaries: Hate-fucking is making a comeback. We'll pencil that in for you.

Ovaries: We've got nothin'. We are deceased.

You get the idea.
Harley, despite her insistence that she hates Dax, clearly has the hots for him. When Dax lays on the full charm, cooking, cleaning, and generally turning her home into a livable place (THE NERVE OF THIS GUY!!), he is that much harder to resist. And when she finally caves, the author brings the heat.

This book came at the best time for me, when I could use a good laugh during this hellfire year. It is a perfect for anyone looking for an escapist type read.

Otterly Scorched is a fun RomCom that is entertaining from start to finish. It is a wonderful story to escape into especially during these trying pandemic times.

“I quickly bend down and grab the baseball bat out from under my bed. No matter how much my mouth is watering at that delicious smell wafting down my hallway and into my bedroom, there is clearly a burglar in my home who took a break from robbing me to cook himself some breakfast.”

Harley and Dax are two ex police officers who have a rough start to their relationship. Fate brings them back together and it’s up to them to either fight the undeniable attraction or fight to make things work.

The book had loads of laugh out loud moments but was also a really cute story.

Once again Tara Sivec had me laughing, grinning and thoroughly entertained by her characters. This hit me at the perfect time, providing humor, lightness, and a chance to forget everything else going on for a little while.

Dax Trevino, one-time police detective and playboy, is distraught over the kidnapping of his babies. His babies are his world, and it doesn’t matter that they are otter rather than human, he wants them back.

Harley Blake has spent her life taking care of her brother and father while running Claws and Effect Pet Detectives. She takes her job very seriously and even though she doesn’t really want to deal with Dax, with whom she has a bit of history, she does want to help find his otters.

I loved Dax’s enthusiasm for his otters, and his acceptance of the quirks that made him who he was. He had so many seriously funny moments. But for every uproariously funny moment, there is also a sweet or heartfelt one to keep the story rolling. I loved him from the very beginning, even as it was difficult to pinpoint which version of Dax was the real one.

These two may have met before, but they were not prepared for the way their lives would turn upside down when they met again. Between the search for the otters, Dax’s attempts to soften Harley’s edges, and Harley’s stubborn streak, there are plenty of opportunities for sparks of all kinds to fly.

The side characters were at times even more ridiculous than the main characters themselves. Harley and Dax’s families had me alternatively shaking my head and laughing out loud. Her dad and brother are a pair of man-children, who alternately bumble their way through “helping” Harley with cases and generally fail at taking care of themselves. There were times I loved members of each family and times they were exasperating as all get out.

This was the perfect escape from a crazy week, and I loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t have imagined otters as the center of a missing animal case, but who can resist a cute little otter (or 8)!

As is typical in a Tara Sivec book, this is filled with her sense of humor. But even better was the adorably sweet romance.

I know Dax is a revisited character, and this will sound terrible, but I don’t really remember him. Oops. So his introduction to me here was even more hilarious because I didn’t expect THAT to be the main love interest.

However, I should never doubt the genius that is Tara.

I loved both Harley and her brother, Davidson. Bahahahahahaha! Yes, I laughed at it every time. Don’t judge me. But she was the perfect heroine. I loved that she didn’t put up with ANY shit, from anyone.

Together, they’re a perfect pair. And since they had a history, well, this entered the realm of my favorite trope.

I absolutely loved everything about this book. I was so sad it was over! It also made me want a pet otter AND, an emotional support limb.

Again, don’t judge me. Read the book. You’ll want one too!

The book had loads of laugh out loud moments but was also a really cute story.

“I’m pretty sure you’re dating.”
“We definitely are not. He asked me out several times, and I said no. I’m helping him find his otters; that’s it,” I argue with her, listing all the things we’ve done together the last few days, none of which have anything to do with dating.
“You have eaten more than one meal together, you’ve shared details about your personal lives, he’s seen your brother in his underwear, and your father has insulted him several times. You’re basically engaged at this point.”

This is the laugh riot, swoon I so needed. I mean is there anything better than a tatted hottie who plays with otters and is domesticated (and likes it)? Tara created the almost perfect man.

I laughed out loud at many parts. It’s seriously an all around great ride I hated to reach the end of.

Get ready to search out those otter videos while reading and wallow in the cuteness. Water puppies for the win.

I needed this read in my life. A refresher from all the humdrum and glorious humor in a time of frowns.

There really is nothing better than Tara Sivec romcom.

Dax and his otters

The last story in this series is just as entertaining as the first two. I love a good second chance trope and Harley and Dax delivered.

I liked the mystery part of this one, even if it wasn't a complete surprise. These two characters have great chemistry and their banter and energy is very entertaining.

Harley's family is a lot of fun, and Dax is absolutely adorable.

I recommend reading these in order, and any (and all) of this author's other creative works.

Did not disappoint, but then again Sivec never does for me. And now I have a new love
for Otters. I thought Ron Jeremy the hedgehog would always be my favorite.

Otterly Scorched by Tara Sivec
Standalone related to two series (see below).
4.5 Stars
(Post contains affiliate links)

Tara Sivec is hands-down my favorite romantic comedy author. Her ridiculous sense of humor taught me to be prepared for Otterly Scorched . Armed with a panty liner, I made sure not to have any food or drink so I wouldn’t choke from laughter (or wet my pants), then I dove in. And I fell in love with all of it.

Five years ago, Dax and Harley were cops that had an attraction. But back then Dax was a playboy with an attitude that made Harley hate him while still being attracted. Now Harley runs a pet detective agency who gets a call from a screaming girly-man about his otters being kidnapped. Turns out the girly-man is Dax the Detective, and he went from suave and suited to a big, bearded, tattooed mountain man, and me likey (oops, Harley likey).
"Ovaries: Sooo, we're just gonna ignore the fact he looks like that now, are we? LOL, okay, sure."

Harley is 38 and has never been in a relationship. She is too busy taking care of her stoner brother and her dad who makes taxidermy party boxes.

(Only $3300 on Amazon! Such a bargain!)

She is also the most undomestic women in the world, and has no idea how to deal with a guy who is interested in her.
"Dax: Your place or mine in an hour, sweetheart? I’ll bring the cinnamon and otter information. You bring your smile.

Harley: Listen here, dick tits, are you on drugs or something? I’ve got a serious business to run, and if I’m going to find your otters, I’m not dealing with your meth mood swings.

Dax: Dick tits?"

But then we meet the otters. And all bets are off. NOBODY can resist the cute.

Sigh…Dax is so domestic! And so patient with Harley. And Harley and her family are just hysterical! Add to that all the side characters, and once again, you have comedy gold from Tara.

Otterly Scorched is a standalone, but there is crossover from Just My Type, and it’s kind of the third in that series. But it’s more related to Burned and Branded. Dax was supposed to be the hero of the third in that series (before his Otter days), and was best friends with DJ, the hero of Branded. But while those were sexy, emotional suspense with a little humor, Otterly Scorched is pure romantic comedy with a little mystery.

My only little problem was that Branded came out in early 2015, and I have eaten way too many 'brownies' to remember it. I write detailed reviews to refresh my own memory, and reading my Branded review helped a lot, but since I don’t include spoilers I still struggled to remember one thing mentioned in Otterly Scorched. DJ and Phina played a pretty prominent role, so I think I am going to grab the audiobook of Branded ($1.99 upgrade or free in audible escape) to refresh my memory better now. One thing I really loved is how Tara cleverly threw in puns, and this one refers to the original series.
“How’s the burned dick? Is it branded with coffee beans now? Heard Detective Blake really scorched the shit out of it.”

Don’t get me wrong. Otterly Scorched will stand just fine on it’s own, but as a Tara Sivec aficionado, it’s just annoying me that I don’t remember something!

Likes:

•Brought pure happiness and giggles to my life.
•I love that they were a bit older and have lived life…well kind of.
•Otters. I mean, can you get any cuter?
•Yes, yes you can. A sexy bearded tattooed man playing with said otters!
•Dax was every woman’s dream man. Can I have one?
•I loved the banter.
•A fun little mystery added to the story, it had a bit of a Janet Evanovich feel.
•There is one type of scene that Tara puts in many of her comedy books and it’s ALWAYS my favorite. You’ll know it when you get to the cheese.
•Harley was such a fun lead.
•Harley’s brother and father were absolutely hysterical. Tara writes the best families.
•Did I say OTTERS?

Dislikes:

•There was a little too much crossover from a 5-year-old book. I feel like I want to read Branded again then read this again but other loyal fans who have a better memory than I do will love it.

The Down & Dirty:
Tara Sivec is the Queen of Romantic Comedy. I’ve said it over and over, nobody makes me snort-laugh like she does. She has a knack for combining ridiculous, heartwarming, sexy and sweet all while making your cheeks hurt from smiling the whole time you read. You don’t need to read anything before this, but loyal Tara fans will love the crossovers. I read a lot of romcom, but Tara makes me otterly laugh out loud and swoon at the same time! Who else can do that? Otterly Scorched combines adorable otters, characters you love, fun mystery and a swoon-worthy male lead in one book that will make you say pandemic? What pandemic?

Rating: 4.5 Stars, 3.5 Heat

Purchase Otterly Scorched by Tara Sivec

These are all related standalones, it is absolutely not necessary to read in order (but this series is amazing romcom so you absolutely should read it!)

Dax appeared in Branded. The first two are sexy, emotional contemporary romance with some action. Otterly Scorched is RomCom.

Reading has been a challenge during the pandemic. I had all but given up on being able to focus on reading, but three new releases are just what I needed.

Otterly Scorched was not the book I was expecting when I asked author about it a few years ago at event. It is even better and I absolutely loved it! As always, Tara Sivec takes the funny and turns it up to eleven.

If you want to know how to turn my mood around, put a Tara Sivec book in front of me. I promise you can't read this without smiling, laughing, or swooning. Oh, and I guarantee after reading, google searches on buying Otters will be happening. I tried for two hours to convince my husband that we should get one. Instead he flipped the script on me when he asked, Would you rather live next door to Tara and be vodka drinking BFF's or Would you rather have a baby Otter? With that one question, he's made me question our whole relationship.

"Ovaries: Hate-fucking is making a comeback. We'll pencil that in for you."

Ok, back to the book, I absolutely adored it. The whole story is cuteness on steroids. I flew through the pages. I couldn't get enough of these characters. Dax is everything that Harley isn't and exactly what she needs. He steps in and provides a little calm to her chaos. Hopefully, this paragraph from the blurb will give you an example of what shenanigans you'll find.

"But the sarcasm starts flying, there are a gaggle of adorable otters who need to be cuddled, a Bandit Von Trash Panda who just wants to play poker, pot brownies, and squirrels dressed for a wedding... at a funeral. Things are heating up—and not just from the small tree fire after the grenade went off—and this man is suddenly simplifying her life instead of making it worse."

When I read the Ignite series a few years ago, I couldn't wait for Dax and Harley's story. Then the hiatus happened. Last month or so I DID read the whole reason behind Tara's decision to put them in this story. However, I didn't connect with this story as it was too much and to me didn't seemed the right fit for the couple. I will still read Tara's work, but this one didn't work for me.
