Past the graveyard, hear the howl of werewolf loggers on the prowl.
In this spooky, rhyming romp, creatures of all types work together to build a haunted house for a vampire family in need of a home. From mummies to Cyclops to the skeleton crew, they’re all working hard to get the job done. But they’d better hurry, because the house needs to be finished before the sun comes up. It’s a good thing their foreman, Frankenstein, is here to keep everyone in check. Will they get it done in time?
A vampire family needs a new home quick, so their monster neighbors come together to build them one...but can they get it done before sunrise?
Frank Tupta’s How To Build A Haunted House is a wildly fun and heartwarming tale, full of sweet surprises. Tupta’s quirky, sing-song rhymes create a cheery flow and lay out a whimsically rousing scene, as various monsters use their talents to help build a house for their friends. Beckett’s creates atmospheric, fun illustrations full of delightful frights, silly shenanigans, and engaging characters.
How To Build A Haunted House offers little readers a heartfelt and laugh-out-loud take on monsters, with a lovely message about compassion and working together.
Thanks to Goodreads for letting me read and review this super-fun book for kids. It's a very well done, nice and high quality lovely illustrated children's book with a fun little rhyming story. This was a great little story about all the monsters and such coming together to build a house for the new vampire family in town. It's quick, easy, and fun to read by yourself or with your kids and a hit for any kids who like construction, monsters, Halloween, or any/all of those things. It can be great to enjoy and read all year round. The little rhyming story was done well and the illustrator did lovely and adorable pictures that complemented the story perfectly. I love how nice and beautiful this book is with a very enjoyable and fun little rhyming story with it. Your kids will love it and you might too as I did. Make sure to mark it down and get this book when it comes out to add to your family library - it's fabulous!
A "house-raising" tale perfect for Halloween time.
The residents of Ghost Town help a "down on their luck" family of vampires build a new home overnight.
Tupta's use of rhyming quatrain poetry flows well when read aloud. He includes many monsters busy working on this job: Frankenstein, Cyclops, werewolf, witches, skeletons, mummies, and ghosts. All are fast asleep by morning after a hard night's work.
Beckett's digital illustrations are rollicking with humor and appropriately dark, although lit by a giant full moon. Great use of shadow, line, and shape in the illustrations. They are full of action and help move the story forward.
Not exclusive to Halloween, this could also be used in units on community.
this deserves so many more stars than 5. i see a review about the illustrations not being up the par?? are we reading the same book. these illustrations are way cool. so colorful and very imaginative, creative and i loved them. what a great idea. i mean there are so many amazing views, u have to be careful to not miss bits and pieces throughout ...well done. must read. i would totally add it to your book self. i can read any genre (time frame ... like Christmas or Halloween) at any time ... it doesn't have to be at that time period in the calendar year. thank you to the author and the illustrator for this masterpiece, u deserve more than 5 stars. thank you. it is within KU if you have that service. please check it out.
What happens when a bunch of monsters get together to build a house? Pure chaos, that's what. Frankly, it's rather amazing that anything gets built. But each of the different monsters seems to know what they are doing as they dig, move dirt, pore a foundation, and build the house. Although, judging by the rather amusing illustrations, things aren't going as smoothly as one might think just reading the text. This is a case where the illustrations and text are both vital in order to appreciate the story. But despite the chaos, a house is completed as the sun rises. Although, I'm not sure how long the vampires will be able to stay judging by the happenings on the end papers. Still an amazing and amusing piece of work that young listeners/readers are bound to enjoy.
Ooooo! A haunted house you say? Yes! But this one has yet to be built! Read along and watch the monsters build for the new family on the block!
Your kids will love this silly Halloween book. Seeing all of the different monsters gathering together to build a haunted house will have them laughing at all of the mayhem and mishaps. The illustrations in this Halloween book fit the mood; the monsters are building the house during the dark, but the book is still filled with color. I think your little ones will really enjoy “learning” How to Build a Haunted House.
The citizens of Ghost Town join together to build a perfect home for their new neighbors. Joining in on the construction are Frankenstein's Monster, witches, a cyclops, mummies and more! They only have one night to completely excavate the land and build this home for the vampires moving in. Despite some mishaps and strong sense of community, they are able to achieve it.
Told in rhyme and with delightful, often humorous illustrations by Kyle Beckett, this is the perfect Halloween read aloud for kids.
How to Build a Haunted House is a rhyming children's book by Frank Tupta and illustrated by Kyle Beckett. Creatures have come together to build a haunted house for a vampire family. The story is told in clever rhymes and will peek the interest of future builders. For my taste, the amazing illustrations were a little busy. There is a lot going on and I think boys more than girls will be attracted to what's going on.
A lovely book to read with young children and/or have on your shelf or theirs! The story itself is okay, featuring a message about a community coming together with a shared goal. The illustrations are what really stood out, they're fantastic. I loved seeing the detail put into each illustration, particularly its use of shadow figures that are only noticeable on a second glance. Great book to put in child's hands and let them explore the illustrations themselves!! Doubly perfect for Halloween 🎃
A vampire family needs a haunted house built before dawn and all the monsters come together to make it happen. My son (7) asked for this to be read several times before bed before it was due back at the library. What a fun time in life. I will miss these days when they are gone! Going to read ALL the spooky books this Halloween because you never know when they will grow out of it.
I won a copy and this is an honest review. Fun rhyming story for very young children. Cute story of the different types of monsters working together to build a house for the new Vampire family moving in.
The text of this book was clever, but the illustrations were much too busy (and sometimes it was hard for me, as an adult, to decode what was happening and to locate what the text was describing).
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book! I can’t wait to read it to my kiddos in the classroom one day.❤️
This was super cute and Halloween-themed children’s book. Perfect for younger elementary grades! I can’t wait until I can read it to my future classroom. The illustrations are high quality and gorgeous.🙌🏼 Definitely recommend if you are an elementary teacher or have young children.🧡
Busy bright illustrations. Lots going on. Not good for class read aloud. Best 1-1 to pour over illustrations. Not a fan at all of rhyming sing song text. Rhyme is bit forced. Not a first purchase for my elem library.
This is the second book I've read today that features a monster community far more harmonious than most human cities! That said, combining monsters and construction equipment works really well. Bless Mr. Tupta, the verse reads as smoothly as can be, and kids will enjoy pouring over the pictures.
This is a perfect Halloween book. Loved the explanation of how the monsters built the house. Super playful and rhyming story weaves together with beautifully done illustrations.
How to Build a Haunted House by Frank Tupta – This is on kindle unlimited. I’m not sure how you can have such a sweet story about welcoming your neighbors when they are all monsters, but this was adorable! Happy Hallow Reading!
This was a fun book that my daughter was scared to read at first. After I showed her that it was silly, not scary, she liked it a lot more! I was a fan of this book!
This would be great for kids that are into spooky things.
Awesome illustrations, great rhymes. My six year old loved it! Will definitely be buying a physical copy soon, we read with KU. We like monsters but not when they're mean or scary, so this was perfect and cute!
A funny picture book about the construction of a haunted manor by the Frankenstein monster and witches for a family of vampires. The rimes and the imagery are cute and catchy. A book about friendship and mutual aid in a community of unique characters.
I won a free copy in a Goodreads giveaway for an honest review. The book was extremely cute. The drawings were well done. A great Halloween read for the little ones!
Never have seen this done before. Witty. Clever. Funny. Made me laugh several times throughout. For those who don't want their monsters too scary. Reminded me of "Hotel Transylvania" in a good way.
