Review of *THE LILY GATE* by Hanna Sandvig

I haven't read the first book in Hanna Sandvig's fairytale retelling series, but you can bet I will be soon! I really enjoyed The Lily Gate, a novella-length retelling of "The Frog Prince." "The Frog Prince" itself isn't one of my favorite fairytales, but I love reading its retellings :P

This story is more faithful to Disney's adaptation of the fairytale, but I only realized this while thinking very hard about Argentine horned frogs one summer evening; however, that may be just me and my oversight. It didn't ruin my enjoyment. If anything, I thought Tuala's love of desserts was a fun and endearing quality :)

I just have to say that I love the concept of the Fae world being entwined with the human one, and each Fae court having a portal to the human world! It was also fun to see several characters from the other courts, though I didn't recognize any of them because I haven't read anything else in this series... Ahem.

I thought the romance was a bit rushed, and I wish there was more character development, particularly with the frog prince himself. Really, I wish it had been longer xD

Points for the humor, though! The competition events made for some very interesting situations! Throw in a mysterious talking frog and a prince who seems really determined to win, and you get an all-around charming retelling of this fascinating fairytale.

I read one of the short stories in this anthology, The Lily Gate by Hannah Sandvig. It is a fun and clever twist on the traditional frog prince tale. The heroine, Tuala, creates a set of three challenges for the princes from surrounding kingdoms to complete in order to find her true love. If you are familiar with Hannah Sandvig's full novel, The Rose Gate (get it, too!) and her other short stories, you also get a nod to characters you may be familiar with. If not familiar, it is a delightful stand alone short story. As with all good stories, The Lily Gate ended too quickly, however, I can’t wait to read the rest of the princess bachelorette stories!

This review is based on the ARC I received of The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig. After reading her first book, The Rose Gate, I hopped at the chance to read her newest novella. It absolutely did not disappoint. The Lily Gate is a Frog Prince retelling and takes place in the same world as TRG. It is such a feel-good, cute story. In true Hanna Sandvig fashion, it is jam-packed with magic and delicious treats! I highly recommend reading and can’t wait to read the rest of these stories!

This review is only for The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig. That story alone is worth the purchase price.

Tuala was such a fun character to follow. There are also a few cameos from other stories that were a treat to discover. I love the tone of the book and how the trials worked out. Can't wait for more from this author.

*This review is for Hanna Sandvig’s The Lily Gate.
This charming Frog Prince retelling gave me all the feels! The competition was so much fun with some clever twists, but the banter was my favorite part and had me snort-giggling throughout. This sweet little romantic story can be read in one sitting and is perfect for all ages!

I read the short story Heart of Wynter and I am blown away with how beautifully written it was. I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that it was a short story. With such a small amount of words, it had such great detail and such feeling that I felt it deep within my bones.

I love the idea of taking these stories that we all know so well and turning them into revamped short stories. I really appreciated that Benson gave this "Snow White" white hair in this retelling as well. It seemed so fitting. I am very intrigued to read the other short stories. And the girl in me can't wait to fall in love with these princesses and princes all over again as an adult.

This review is for Sleeping Widow by Charlee Gardens.

What can you say about a fairytale? Fairytales aren’t real, they are puffs of smoke. And yet Ms Garden writes this one like they are real people; Nice people, arrogant people, villainess people. When I became an adult I told myself life is not a fairytale quit looking for a happily ever after. I like the story she writes. After you do all the work of growing up and building relationships and setting a course for your life yes there will be obstacles to overcome and more growth to go through but there is hope for happiness. People can change. I really like the way this story is written. Very good Ms Garden!!

I read The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig which is one of the books in this collection. Princess Tuala is holding a contest to pick her future husband. But can she find true love among her suitors? And what's with the frog turned up and ruining her pastries?

I loved this fun fairytale retelling of the frog prince. It features great characters, fun banter and an engaging plot. Highly recommended if you love sweet romance, fairytales or feel in need of a comfort read. The Lily Gate is the book equivalent of a deliciously warm Pain au Chocolat. Bon Appétit!

I received an ARC of Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden. My review is for that story.

What happened to Aurora after true love's kiss? Beautifully written and engaging, this is a great take on the modern fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. It tells of the princess's life after she moved back to the castle and married her prince. I finished the story in one sitting because I couldn't put it down! I can't wait to read more!

Wish I could read the whole thing. But I only read one story called Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden. I actually adored the book. I LOVE fairy tale retelling. It's so much fun to read them. This book is no different. Sleeping beauty became sleeping widow. You can guess at the story lol. I loved this ARC. I don't know how many times I have said this but it's true. Hopefully I can read the whole box set soon.

All indie anthologies carry a certain amount of risk because of the different writing styles (and quite often different levels of editorial/proof reading) that might not be your cuppa. This particular anthology, with the theme of one princess must choose from many princes to find her Happily Ever After, was pretty good on the proof-reading front.

The different styles... Well, there's probably something for everyone, and I actually liked a lot more than I expected. I was expecting cute, romantic fantasy, so those are the ones that appealed the most.

My favourites were: Another Midnight by Amanda Marin, Aurelian Skies by Robin D. Mahle and Elle Madison, and The Lily Gate by Hana Sandvig.

Please bear in mind I'm a super picky reader, so while I may nitpick there's no one story in here I'd say was unworthy in any way.

Princess of Crystal Mountains by Emma Savant: A cute and original take on the princess in the tower trope. It could have done with a little more development of the characters' relationships at the start (time skips, argh!) but everything else was pretty darn good. Apparently it's a prequel, but you wouldn't know it as it can be read without any prior knowledge. 4*

Another Midnight by Amanda Marin: The perfect blend of Cinderella and Groundhog day. Cute, funny, and wonderfully written as a short story. 5*

Aurelian Skies by Robin D. Mahle and Elle Madison: A really cute reworking of Rapunzel - a little bit Disney's Tangled, but with plenty of other fairy tale elements. Of all the stories, this felt closer to following a contestant on the Bachelor(ette) TV show rather than being just another ball/tournament. Modernised Disney vibes, cute as heck (I mean, come on - a raccoon sidekick!), and with a side order of magic and snark. 5*

One Last Rose by Bynum/Dalto: This one took a little time to establish itself, possibly too long given it's a 10 minutes read. I had no idea of the setting until a mini info-dump a fair way in. I think it's post-magic-apocalypse, which sounded cool, but in general I found the world building confusing and the characters were a bit rushed in forming relationships. 2*

Winning Our Love by Audrey Rich: Modern teenage YA stuff with lots of brand-name-dropping and rushed hormonal narration. I didn't really understand what was going on. Not my thing. Sorry, DNF.

The Mermaid's Fairytale by Majanka Verstraete: A cute Little Mermaid reworking, just really rushed to fit into a short story. It felt like it could have benefited from being just a tiny bit longer for the sake of character chemistry 3*

Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden: I'm not a big fan of YA modern slang being dropped in high fantasy settings, nor insta-lust. Interesting idea of taking Disney's Aurora and seeing what happens when a Happily Ever After doesn't work out, but the extra elements (fox shifters and a prince of Love spells?) lost me - there felt like too many fantasy/paranormal romance elements thrown in together. The style of the story just was not my thing. 2.5*

The Lost Heir's Love by Shaw Hart: A lot of telling rather than showing, and the love story is a bit alpha male for my liking ("she doesn't know it, but she's mine" - yikes!) Not my thing. DNF.

Fire & Ice by Bee Murray: Really cool idea (I mean, sort of literally because it's Ice Queen related), and I loved everything except the weird modern slang and including modern technology for no reason in an otherwise high fantasy world. Still, a fun read. 3.5*

Heart of Winter by K.B. Benson: A kick ass Snow White retelling sans dwarves (or the number 7). I found this one rushed at the start, and confusing later on. I'm not a big fan of the broody growling male character trope. Maybe just not my thing. DNF.

The Lily Gate by Hana Sandvig: Frogs, fae and France! Manages to blend the magical and the modern really nicely. OK, so the twist is obvious from the start, but it's fun to watch things unfold. Also: pastry chef princess ftw. 4.5*

Dance of Wishes by K.A. Last: Twelve Dancing Princesses... Only they're all the same princess. The King was a bit odd in flipping between being super controlling and mean before coming out as actually being quite nice, and it could get a tad repetitive at times (our heroine's internal monologue had mooning over her preferred beau as a constant mantra), but I like the twist to the magic and you're really made to want that HEA for the two love birds. 3.5*

This is a collection of short stories by various authors. My review is for a few of them. I'll update this as I read more.

ANOTHER MIDNIGHT by Amanda Marin.
>Oh my goodness. This story is SO GOOD. I'm glad I was alone while reading it bc I was smiling like a fool the whole time! I loved the different gentlemens personalities. I've known each type so it really lived for me Lol Its a Cinderella and Groundhogs Day mashup. Which is as fun as it sounds. Just a short story so I was left wanting more!! I will definitely be reading more from this author!
Favorite lines:
"Happiness isn't a passive feeling. It's something you participate in. You can decide to be it no matter whats going on around you."

SLEEPING WIDOW by Charlee Garden
>This is a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Prince Philip has died and Aurora needs to find a new husband to keep the throne. The men she has to choose from are all vastly different. She speaks her mind. It's lots of fun. There was also a twist that really surprised me! Definitely recommend.
>Favorite lines:
"If I spent the night with you in my arms, Princess, nothing would be the only thing not happening."
"True love was all the magic we needed."

AURELIAN SKIES by Elle Madison and Robin D Mahle
>Fun Rapunzel retelling with a cute raccoon side kick 💕🦝 This one surprised me too in several ways. It's pretty hilarious at points though not without its touching moments. The choosing process for this was unique. Enjoyable read for sure.
>Favorite lines:
"Son of a freedom-fighting faerie!"
"There are many reasons to hope and live and breathe, and sometimes we get so caught up in the moments of failure that we forget about the victories."
"When I open them again, Frankie is slipping into my bedroom window with all the grace of a blobfish..."

Really good!!!

Novellas are always tricky because there isn't much time to develop character and plot. I'll admit I was skeptical at the beginning (stories from indie authors can be quite hit or miss, and this anthology is full of them!), but i was pleasantly surprised by the quality and depth of many of the stories here. I've found some new authors to check out, too! My favourite of this set is The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig. It's so sassy and fun, but also a full story on its own, and i LOVE the female protagonist. I also really liked Aurelian Skies by Mahle & Madison, and Heart of Winter by K.B. Benson. There were a couple of other good ones there too! My least favourite (the only one I actually DISLIKED) was One Last Rose. This is partly because I'm not a fan of LGBT stories - that's not what I come to a fairytale collection for - so I'm upset that it was sprung upon me without warning. But more importantly because Beauty and the Beast is my favourite fairytale of all time and they completely butchered it 😡 no respect for the original at all! ugh. But that was the worst of the lot. The rest range from not bad to very very good. This set is well worth the purchase AND the read!

Im having fun reading this short stories of fairy tales! In no specific order, here are some!
-Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden
Sleeping Beauty retelling! It was kind of the start of the “after she was kissed “and awoken. The events that unfolded afterwards were sweet, cute and romantic! Soo swoon worthy!
-Aurelian Skies by Robin D Mahle and Elle Madison
Rapunzel meets Aladin? I loved this unique retelling! I was captivated till the end! It had that funny humor, perfect romance and swoon worthy scenes. The chemistry was sincere and lovely! Also, cute pets!
-The mermaid’s Fairtale by Majanka Verstraete-
What an awesome twist to this mermaid story! What if the human prince was in love with the mermaid instead of the other way around?? Little mermaid re-imagine! Super cute! One of my favorites!!! I hope there is more to this because the ending left so many possibilities that I am looking forward too!
-One Last Rose by Laynie Bynum and M. Dalto
A different retelling to beauty and the beast. #loveisLove#FFRomance
-Another Midnight by Amanda Marin
A short Cinderella like no other! Lets just say Dejavu! The night keeps repeating itself over and over and Over! Until she gets it right 😉! #IwantMoreTristan!
I will add more as i read them!

I was sent an arc of Heart of Wynther in exchange for a review.

Heart of Wynther is a retelling with interesting twists to the old tale of Snow-White, leaning more towards Snow-White and the huntsman series than the Disney’s version. Coming upon these twists was definitely my favourite part of the read, so for anyone who loves looking for little traits of the original tales and see how they change, this is a recommended read. There were also some things that just didn’t work for me, such as the romance, but I think this was more due to the short-story format than the story itself. All in all, Heart of Wynther is an enjoyable read :)

This review is for Heart of Wynter by K.B. Benson. I loved the unique take on Snow White’s story! The twist on how and why the Queen wants her heart is fun and different, and who doesn’t want to read about a bachelorette type story involving a fierce princess? My only real complaint is that it was short, which led to it feeling a little rushed. But overall really enjoyed it and hope to read the rest of the set! Like I said - how can you go wrong with bachelorette type stories about fierce princesses??

I received an ARC of “Heart of Wynter” by K. B. Benson in exchange for an honest review.

Let me tell you, I’m not typically a short story fan, but this Snow White retelling sucked me in right away! Filled with action, chilling enemies, and an enemies-to-lovers romance, I was immediately engaged. My biggest issue was that it IS a short story, and I wanted more of these characters and this intriguing world. Not to mention, K. B. Benson’s writing style is vivid and beautiful!

Highly recommend!

I loved The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig!

Hanna does it again! I loved her novel, The Rose Gate, a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and now I'm equally in love with The Lily Gate, a Princess and the Frog retelling! This super sweet novella finds Princess Tuala befriending a frog while trying to pick her perfect prince. There are fun challenges, scrumptious food, and an original twist. A five-star read for sure. I look forward to reading more by Hanna, and also checking out the other stories!

Review of *Heart of Wynter* by KB Benson
I freaking loved it! The two main characters in the story have beautiful, well established character arcs. Her descriptions are very well written capturing each of the 5 senses with the ebbs and flows of the story. You feel for both characters and their inner turmoils and choices. I would recommend this book to anybody! The writing is amazing, the characters are enjoyable and the story is so cute as it plays into the Bachelorette idea! Must Read!!!

My favorite stories were Heart of Winter and The Lily Gate. They were well researched, had excellent character development, interesting plots that were true to the roots of the story but completely unique. I loved them and will definitely be checking out their authors.
Other stories I enjoyed were Another Midnight, Aurelian Skies and Sleeping Widow. These were more sappy than I like but their plot twists were intriguing and I couldn’t put them down.

All n all was a good and fast read.
I've picked this one because it contains a story from Hanna Sadvig which I love for the ROSE GATE (a Beauty and the BEast retelling).

So, let's go in depth.

I skipped the firt story because it didn't captivated me enough to discover which retelling was in the first place, I know it was too soon, but being a short story you nail it on the first phrases or you're screw, sorry (not sorry).

The second one was a Cinderella retelling.
Very cute and with an interesting twist. Quite liked this one!

The third was a Rapunzel one (not my favourite fairy tale, known it just from Disney film truly) and it was entertaining and funny. Not bad.

The fourth was Beauty and the Beast, and usually I got pretty disappointed in this ones because I always expect too much.
The premises werenot so good, the world building was confusing, real classical and not authors where named, the magical system was approximative and quite dumb, but I admit the twist in this one even if not so well done was interesting. A let down nontheless...

The fifth I think was a Merida retelling, again, not my cup of tea, never even seen the film.
Dumb american rich girl goes to Scotland to find a fiancé with a traditional ceremony while she's already in love with her friend...NOT MY CUP OF TEA.
NEEEEEEEEEEXT

The sixth one was a Sleeping Beauty one and we had a winner, pretty much from the start.
Black leather clad prince with a gruff voice and snappy retort...count me in.
I'm a goner here. Probably my favourite, even if in the end was pretty cliché it was a good ride while reading it.

The seventh was an Anastasia one, again never seen the fascination about this one and never seen any films about it. And the peak of my annoiance was red silk ball gown with heartshaped neck line, what that most cheap and cheesy that could exsist and not at all REGAL! But it was cute and fast in the end so I didn't hate it!

The eight one don't even know what was suppose to be, the Snow (Ice) Queen maybe!?!? but again, kinda dark and brooding love interest here so I was sold form the start XD

And then we were at the Lily Gate, a Princess and the Frog retelling, as usual for Hanna Sadvig stories it was cute and funny and pretty entertaining.

The last one was a Twelve Princess retelling I believe, and this one too I don't know so I was pretty cold about it and it was...ok, but just ok, nothing more. Sorry

Exactly what the title implies, this is a collection of fairytales with a bachelor twist. So far I am really enjoying the imaginative license these authors have taken with the material.

Aurelian Skys by Robin D Mahle and Elle Madison
This Rapunzel retelling throws the reader right into the middle of the action as the feisty heroine uses her built in rope to to race back to her tower room. This competition reminded me a bit of Chuck Barris's Dating Game. She has some hilarious suitors, and is not at all what they are expecting either. Somewhere between her over-protective Aunt and her pastry-pilfering raccoon it all works out.

Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden
Charming, Charming, Charming......why hello dark and dangerous - this might get intersting. Sleeping Beauty is back home after the tragic loss of her one true love. She feels she can never love again, but must remarry and produce an heir out of duty to her country. Hence the competition for her hand. Primarily centered around a series of dates, there is one guy who sticks out - but he is hiding something. This one gets a little steamy - but stays clean, all fade to black.

The Lily Gate by Hanna Sandvig
Such a sweet Frog Prince retelling! Tuala has a french father and a fairy mother who truly love each other and want her to find the same type of love and companionship. Each day includes a competition - with a secret challenge, and not all the princes are as they appear. The winner gets a date, and a kiss, because her mother believes that is the way you will know it is the right one.

Dance of Wishes by KA Last
Intriguing twist on the Twelve Dancing Princesses. 12 Princes, 3 balls of silver, gold, and diamond. 12 princesses, but only one is real. Adelina's father wants her to marry a man who will be a powerful ruler. Adelina wants to marry a good man who will love and support her. The magic is supposed to find the man who will do both - but will it work? Especially as the man she loves isn't even eligible to compete.

I received a copy of 2 short stories from the authors.

Aurelian Skies by Elle Madison and Robin D. Mahle
This fun twist on Rapunzel was such a light read. It had the right mixture of romance, action, humor, and intrigue, with a nod to the classic princes we have come to love.
"Prince Enamoring, at your service."
I open my mouth to respond when my aunt pinches me.
" Yes," she whispers. "That is his real name. And yes, it would be rude of you to question it. He's King Charming's brother," she adds.

I love that Rapunzel has a pet raccoon; not only is she super adorable, but she also plays an integral part in the story.

I thought that the authors eloquently used the few words allocated to this short story to make them all count.
"Today was a bad day. There are so many bad days. But if I let them overtake me, then I forget to enjoy the ones that are good.

I cannot wait to read the full length story once it comes out!

Sleeping Widow by Charlee Garden
This story was a fun read although it was quite predictable, at least from the "Bachelorette" perspective. It was easy to tell which prince Aurora would pick so there was no nail biting on this. The twist came at the very end and was dealt with quickly.
I think that if this story was made into a full length novel and the scenes were expanded, the romance would be quite steamy.
"Why do you insist on invading my personal space?"
"Because you devour me with your gaze when I do. There is no way a man can resist that."

This was a fun read.

I can't wait to read the rest of the stories in this anthology.

Dance Of Wishes by K A Last

ONE SWEETLY ENCHANTING TREAT!!!
Delightful! Last brought the fun, frills and fiasco with this cute little number, laying on some heat and a little magic, working this baby into a tizzy, wrapping it up sleek, shiny and tight. A spinning vortex chocked-full of quirky mishaps and surprising happenstance propel every emotion bursting into play front and center. Twixt, twined and tightly woven, showcasing the rocketing ups and agonizing downs, grounding in it's simplicity and awe-inspiring in it's depth, drawing our characters closer than they could have ever anticipated. Satisfaction rocks this incredible spin, bringing it home with such intensity and precision, displaying triumph and eternal love, imparting one block busting delight, catapulting this jewel to life beautifully. Lines blur and boundaries crossed, limitations are stretched and manipulated, kicking this baby into overdrive, blowing it into a tailspin with astonishing results, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. Dynamics and countenance in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page your drawn into this web so deep until everything else ceases to exist. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits add realism and diversity, transforming into genuine charismatic personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and vivid descriptions creating an elaborate backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Last, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Reviewing Fire + Ice – Bee Murray

Given how the story started with a bit of snark from Princess Lumi, I was expecting a bit more than just a surface story.

We only get Lumi’s POV and with the exception of a few words by the male suitors not much from them. They are presented as caricatures of personalities more than anything.

We have Eamon who is like a pretty peacock screaming for everyone to be in awe of his beauty and to be grateful he’s even acknowledging us lowly peasants.

Raynor who is the shy, lonely hunter uncomfortable around people, but strong of heart.

Skarde who’s very much a showman, he thrives on the energy from the crowd and is very good at roaring for their attention.

Finlo fitting the tall, dark and enigmatic role, with his intense looks, stalwart actions and few words.

This is a PG rated story, without much depth, only having Lumi’s POV made the story feel even more isolated and a bit devoid of emotion. So while I didn’t dislike the story there wasn’t much of a story to really connect with any of the characters.
