After pursuing my big break in Hollywood for more than a decade, I’ve finally landed the role of a lifetime. The only downside--it happened just as sweet, gorgeous Lorenzo and I were taking the first tentative steps from friendship to so much more. Our brand-new relationship barely had a chance to get off the ground, and now the pressures of my new-found success are coming at us from every angle.
Can I really have it all? Or will chasing fame and fortune end up costing me the man of my dreams?
This age gap, opposites attract gay romance begins the brand new His Chance Series. It’s set in the same world as Alexa Land’s Firsts and Forever and Castaways Series, but you don’t need to be familiar with any of those books to enjoy this one.
I started this book and for the first half I was thinking pretty hard if I should DNF, but somehow I ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. There was something about this that just kept me intrigued, even though I felt the romance and Lorenzo's character specifically were incredibly underdeveloped.
I really liked the fluffiness of Alexa Land books. I like how easy breezy they are to read. But when I started this I did get a little confused. I know this is a spin-off, and I’m not sure if these characters had already been introduced in another book, but it was like starting with a second book in a series. There was all this background mentioned casually that felt too huge for a once sentence introduction in the first few pages.
Will and Lorenzo had been friend for a while so they knew things about each other, but to read about Will casually mentioning he had been a prostitute for 10 years and just quit over a year ago, felt strange. I felt this in particular was too big to be introduced like this. So this book and I got off on the wrong foot at first.
I do have to admit that I got more into it when Will started filming his movie. Unfortunately the romance never really took off in the way I wanted to. Lorenzo was such a flat, bland character that I had a hard time liking him. I don’t need the love interest’s POV for me to make me really feel their emotions, but here I think it would have been nice to read some thoughts from him.
I actually liked almost all the side characters, except for Lorenzo. He was just so…blah.
But I still ended up liking this and the ending got me intrigued for the second book which I will definitely read.
Second Act is a wonderful romance by Alexa Land. The start of the His Chance series, it is every bit as charming as her other books.
This book is everything I love about Alexa Land's stories. Will and Lorie are real, flawed, and lovable. The character growth is a huge part of their journey. And the end result is finding love. Real love. Like her past couples, this is a couple the reader firmly believes in, knows belongs together, and has faith they will always be together.
One of the profound things I take away from this tale is that when we accept that dreams change, one can achieve all their dreams. I love this and completely agree.
The movie aspect is well done. Just suspend belief on some things and enjoy it the liberties the author takes. It's a romance. Enjoy the romance.
Their story includes family issues and an age gap. It's an angst free read, full of plenty of charm, humor, and romance.
My favorite scene is the scrapbook. So many tears. Just beautiful. It's truly a beautiful scene.
Second Act is heart-felt and beautiful. And oh, what a wonderful ending! I can't praise this Alexa Land book enough.
I know this is book 1 in the series but honestly I think it’s better if you have read some of the Castaway Series book 3 specifically. It really helps to understand Lorenzo and Will’s relationship development.
This is definitely set in a bit of an ideal world that I wished existed. Where everyone says the right things and conflicts can be resolved with a conversation. This is a sweet and very low angst story. I’m super happy Will and Lorenzo get their HEA.
I’m really looking forward to book 2 as well. I think this spinoff series is going to be very fab!
What a sweet read! Will and Lorenzo are two very beautiful souls that have sad pasts. They navigate through as friends and to find that they are meant to be. I love how the boatloads of characters with their furry and feathered friends always get into the act and that keeps us all interested in their lives. I can’t wait for the next story. Thank You Alexa Land 😍📚❤️
Awww, my cynical little heart is sighing over this story! I love this author’s characters and books. I can’t wait to read the next story in the series. And I absolutely loved Will’s parents. Thank you for the gift of them!
Alexa Land is one of my absolutely favorite authors. If you have not "Nan" in her First and Forever seriu, correct that omission now. This was a sweet but heart warming story. I loved the characters. Well written with no editing errors.
First let me start out by saying I adore Alexa Lands writing and have devoured all of her books! This book was no exception, it was well written with likeable characters and an nice HEA. I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look of Will filming the movie, I loved the cast of new side characters and this was a nice, easy read. It missed the mark for me with the relationship between Will and Lorenzo, I didn't feel their connection like I was hoping to and it fell a little flat for me. I would have liked to have seen their friendship develop more on page before they took it up a level. That being said, I still love this authors writing and will definitely read the next book in the series!
Not my favourite. I have read all books from Alexa Land and this one I found boring!!! It has been a while between books and have more or less forgotten who is who since there are so many characters. The only thing I was excited about was when Riley found Gabriel at the end of the book and they were not even the MCs of the book. So a no go on this book for me.
This is not a new idea.....a breakthrough of a young actor who happens to be gay. But it is so well handled that I highly recommend it as a great revival of the genre. It is quite entertainingly funny. As an old guy, I thought I had read everything about behind the scenes movie making but this book showed that there is more to learn and enjoy. There is a bit of a bad guy in the background....ominous. A nice if eerie touch. I am very much ready to read the next book in the series.
I’m really not sure how I can accurately describe and rate this book. On one hand, there was so much I loved, unfortunately, it wasn’t really anything about the romance between Will and Lorenzo. I know this is a spin-off of another series I haven’t read, but if this is able to be a standalone, I needed more development between Will and Lorenzo to make me invest. It felt like I was dropped in chapter 5 and supposed to know the backstory of these two before I was even introduced to them. So that threw me off a bit. Then, when things do start, Lorenzo claims he’s not ready for a relationship but everything that follows screams they are together without acknowledging it. I will say, that it was very sweet. I felt a bit more connected to Will, seeing as we only got his POV. Lorenzo was a really nice guy—kinda too perfect, but good for Will. But I didn’t really get a feel for him, he was a bit flat.
What I loved about this book were all the side characters. They were endearing and completely charmed me. I am absolutely invested in Riley, Phoenix, and Vee. I was also so intrigued by the film Will was shooting and all the scenes we got. I want to read this book. I want to see this movie. I want to know Alex’s story. I just want more of it please.
Had the romance between Lorenzo and Will been more developed, this would have easily been a 4-5 star read for me. I am definitely continuing this series and may fall down the first and forever series rabbit hole at some point.
Will is an actor who has given up on his career thinking that after ten years and no big breaks he is a failure. Lorenzo after three years is still trying to deal with his boyfriends betrayal and death. It’s about two friends realizing that after knowing each other for over a year that there’s more than just friendship between them. They use that to help each other to get what each wants most in life, for Will a successful career and love; Lorenzo it’s the realization that he can forgive Javier and find love once again.
***4 stars*** There are great bones to this book, but good grief was it lacking the “oomph”. The character development was weak and the chemistry between the 2 MCs seemed to exist but never really materialized. I almost skipped the last 2 chapters to the end—I mean I was at least invested enough to see what happens. Not that I found out really anyways. I am honestly barely sitting on the fence about 4 stars—but I have read other books by Alexa that put this one to shame, so I’m hoping it’s a one-off.
Alexa never lets us down! I’ve been reading her books from the start and love everyone of them! Seems every book is even better than her last! This one takes a different route and being the first book I’ve read in months, it was so uplifting in a time of difficulties and unrest in our world. Thanks, Alexa, I really needed this book to get me out of my funk! Can’t wait for the next in the series, I love the next couple already!
5 Glowing Stars... Great start to a brand new series. I loved it. It was so emotional I cried way too much, but is was sweet & honest as well with a great friends to lovers storyline. I loved Will & Lorenzo right away & so happy that made each other so happy because they both deserved it. A Must Read.
Alexa did such a good job with this book. I loved how naturally Lorenzo and Will’s relationship progressed. Alexa excels at writing stories with large ensemble cast and giving each character a distinctive personality. I’m very very very excited for the next book. I feel like I’ve been waiting ages for this one!!!
It’s no secret that I have loved every Alexa Land book I’ve picked up. This one is no different! Such a sweet love story. I definitely shed some happy (and a few heartbreaking) tears. I even cried for a fictional character from a book being portrayed by a fictional character! Looking forward to more!!
Loved this book so much!! Just when Will decided to give up on his passion, he gets the perfect role. Just when he decided he didn't have a chance with his perfect guy, Lorie, they fall in love!! I loved this book. Life is full of second chances. 😍
Minimal angst, happy times, and sad backstories. This story is perfect if you want something light, and these days (April 2020) it’s exactly what I needed.
Each time I read one of Alexas books I just get super happy as I love the stories and characters she have created. They are the stories I always end up reading over and over again because they are just that good! I can't wait to read the next story!
Loved every min of this book. I couldn’t put it down. A perfect ending with enough tease to make me crazy. I need book two ASAP. Love this author. 5 well deserved stars.
This was a great start to a new spin off series with the guys from Catalina in the background Will finally lands a dream acting job and falls in love with vet Lorenzo
