"Lethal Lawyers" By Dale E. Manolakas

My Thoughts....

I found this story quite a thrilling, suspense and captivating read that will definitely keep your attention all the way through the read. You will see from this story that this one is a good one of a 'strong woman protagonist' 'though the eyes of a blue color Greek woman[Sophia Christopoulos] who went through a intriguing legal process at this premier LA law firm. Be ready to see what could go on in large law firms, some romance with some interesting but complexing and intriguing characters that will make this one good read. In the end will Sophia be able to survive the drama, sharks, politicking, back stabbing at this law firm? To find out this and so much more of what 'Lethal Lawyers' is all about you will have to pick up this well written story to find out.

Ooook! As hard as I tried to like this book, which I did to some degree, there was much that I totally disagreed with. For starters, the main character, Sophia Christopolos, was the smartest dumbest person I've ever read. She was book smart as a first-year lawyer, but dumb when it came to common sense, which appears to be a problem for many real life attorneys.

I struggled with the grammatical errors in this book, as well. In fact, the book probably would have read even better had it been edited correctly, which, unfortunately, it didn't appear to have been. The lingo the attorneys used bothered me to a level of degree due to my personal knowledge that lawyers, although billables are important to any law firm, simply do not have everyday conversations about billables that much. Attorneys often have outside conversations with other staff and colleagues and do not mention the billables in everything they do!

There are those individuals who do go into law for the mere pleasure of actually practicing it, but there are those who are in it for the money, and Sophia's main goal, to me, was all about the money. Her character was a bit shallow and she came off as being a nit-wit. The managing partners were coming up dead at every turn, and for each one that died, all Sophia and the other attorneys could think about were their billable hours. That seemed too far reaching.

And, if the managing partners were dying as much and often as they did in this story, it would seem to me that clients would be inclined to take their business elsewhere, but that didn't happen. I wondered why there weren't more of an internal investigation as to why some of these lawyers were lethal? The book was entirely too long and drawn out, even though I did enjoy the fact the chapters were very short--it was just way too many of them.

This story lacked substance, although there was a great deal of legal-eze mentioned, the layperson wouldn't understand much of what was happening unless you worked in an actual law firm. This book had the potential to be really great, if it was edited properly and the story line had been developed more carefully. Sophia just seemed too hung up on herself, and that made me dislike her a great deal. As much as I love a great legal thriller, this one kept me wanting more and getting less. It just wasn't my kind of legal book.

Work place from hell.

Maybe some of us even worked in the place like this. Law firm partners and politics. Student loans to pay, back stabbing. Who's going to have more billable hours and make more money.

Lethal Lawyers is described by author Dale E. Manolakas as a legal thriller and that is a true claim but much more so for aspiring lawyers and paralegals than for the general public. The story bogs down early because of the great number of characters introduced. It takes reading through a few subplots to get the relationships of the characters straight. With the word “lethal” in the title, a reader can expect a few killings. Several deaths occur so we have a built-in mystery as readers look for the identity of the killer. I knew very early in the novel that it was one of two possible characters, so I felt a need to read through the slow-moving novel to find out if it was one of my two suspects. I was not surprised. For me, this was an “OK” novel, three Amazon stars. Perhaps those with a strong interest in adventures involving lawyers would give this novel a higher rating.

Sophia Christopoulos is a recent law school graduate. She has a job as an intern in a respectable law firm but the pay was not the best. Sophia needed a high-paying yet intensely demanding position at a law firm that would pay big bucks. She had lots of student loans and a job that paid for every billed minute would enable her to repay loans much more quickly. Thorne & Chase did more than that. There were cute terms such as “value billing” and hourly billing for parts of an hour. Fifteen minutes in consultation with a company colleague could count as an hour. It just required that both lawyers filed billings for the same time and date claimed. The system was an obvious target for exploitation by agreeable corrupt employees and partners.

According to lower level associates and junior partners, there were no more corrupt people than the senior partners, five of whom were on the Management Committee. As they worked as mentors to junior partners and associates they determined billing rates and time spent on each case. It was in their interest to rack up as many meetings and consultations as possible. Senior partners would split billings with subordinates. This was where the first problem came in. If a senior partner deemed the subordinates work less than perfect, the senior partner would reallocate the subordinate’s fees to him or herself. This happened a lot at Thorne and Chase.

The firm liked to recruit lawyers that already had a client portfolio. The new recruits arrived at the firm and brought billable hours with them. This brought up the second problem. If the subordinate’s client was sufficiently attractive as far as high fees charged, the senior five partners stole the clients from the associates or junior partners. Sophia learned all of this a few days after signing her contract and began to have serious doubts about her move. As an intern in her first job with another firm, she hadn’t brought a client book. She didn’t even officially have her license. Thorne and Chase were so impressed by her skills at the hiring interview that they were willing to employ her in a consultation role until she received her license. Meanwhile, she would learn much more than she wanted to know about Thorne and Chase.

There was a movement among the junior partners to stop the Management Committee members practice of stealing clients and reallocating fees to themselves. That is when the deaths began. Senior partners from the Management Committee were dropping like flies, soon there were only two very scared senior partners left. All the deaths were accidental, of course. Steve Rutger, a police detective who hoped to become a Sophia’s latest romantic interest, didn’t believe the deaths accidental. The amazingly naïve Sophia continued to believe that almost regularly scheduled deaths in the Senior Management Committee population was just happenstance. While Sophia was attracted to Steve, she also resisted his investigative measures about the murders. She had just gotten hired by the firm and didn’t want to kill the cash cow. Also, Taylor, one of the junior partners, one of four in a cabal to upset the status quo, was bedding Sophia regularly. Sophia thought she was in love with Taylor and felt disloyal about her lustful thoughts toward Detective Steve.

There is no offensive sexual or violent language in this novel. Readers will have to exercise their imagination to fill in details of suggested murders and romantic encounters. The novel moves slowly and almost predictably. As I read, I was waiting for words that would signal the awakening of Sophia to reality. I felt the novel was too long and populated by too many characters to engage me in the pursuit of such a trivial point.

What a great story. It begins with Sophia interviewing at the prestigious law firm Thorne & Chase for a position. It follows her day and discloses the steps that she has to take to be accepted. It begins with her meeting with the lead partner and doesn't go well until the end when she was leaving. This is followed up with an interview with a senior woman partner and it goes better. The last bit where she goes to dinner is when she does get the offer.

She starts there the very next day and after going to dinner that night with friends, they come back and the police are there and the woman partner, Judith, that Sophia met has died. The next day she has received all of her assignments and one of them is with Frank, the senior partner she interviewed with. She is given a task and is told that she will be going to San Francisco with both he and Roger to do a deposition. The trip is made and again another accident occurrs.

Things seem to go from bad to worse after she tells another of the senior partners that there was a mistake made and he would loose his case. He didn't want to hear it. When Monday came around, a body of another partner was found. To top it all off, all of the cases that Sophia was assigned she wound up being dropped from.

As things went along, Sophia tried to make amends with the partner that she told about the mistake because it appeared he was blackballing her. To break things up, the firm was having a retreat at a resort. Sophia was looking forward to it and being with her friends Paul and Tricia along with Taylor. She also was looking forward to going riding again.

To discover what happened during the weekend and how Detective Rutger got involved, what issues arose at the law firm as well, then you must read this book.

Having been involved in the law profession for 30 years and having two lawyer daughters, one in a big firm and one in her own practice, I know the cut throat, ego-driven and back-stabbing and yes the Peyton Place kind of gossip and sex of a large firm compared to a smaller firm. Yes, billable hours are the driving force in a large firm, especially if you are lowest on the totem pole. And the senior associates and partners in the firm ALWAYS have their hand in your clients and take their cut. This book may have exaggerated some, but to what I know not too much. The naivité of the protagonist, Sophia is sometimes hard to take, but understandable. Being a former teacher and putting herself through law school and all the student loans, she wants to find a large law firm where she naively thinks she can make it to the top with just hard work. But little does she realize the cut throat business she is in and all the politics involved. When partners are dying left and right, and although she knows some things that might help the investigation, she clams up thinking it would keep her safe and on the road to the top. But does it or will it get her in trouble? This was a fun and very interesting read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I received and ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I know nothing about law, but I love me a legal thriller. After enjoying a few John Grisham novels, I was excited to dive into Lethal Lawyers and try a new author. John Grisham is the industry standard when it comes to this genre, but I must say that Dale E. Manolakas does things that Grisham often misses in his books. Lethal Lawyers had characters that felt real. Sophia provided a fresh perspective into the world of law and firm politics. Sure, at times she felt stupid and indecisive, but most people actually second guess themselves from time to time, so it was completely forgivable. Her shortcomings felt natural. Also, this book educated me on certain legal procedures without giving it to me in boring info dumps.

Dale E. Manolakas has a new fan in me.

As a whole, I really enjoyed the premise of this book. I didn't give it 5 stars for two reasons. First, I intensely dislike a "heroine" who believes someone's in love with her because he takes her for a quick role in the hay. Don't forget, this is a very highly qualified lawyer we're talking about. Second reason is because I felt there were too many loose ends that were never cleared up. I wanted more information on how the murders were committed and who started it all. Maybe there will be a follow up book that might give the missing information. The ending seemed a little rushed. It still rated 4 stars by me so you know the book was very good.

It was impossible to put down and then it ended quite abruptly. Throughout there were so many details of how Sophia was feeling, her motivation, what she and her friends were eating, the plot, the danger and then suddenly this story was over. There was a short one-year-later epilogue It was so very disappointing, I felt so let down that I almost wished I hadn't read it

Sophia is just out of law school and trying for her first job....

Sophia Christopoulos is a new, hungry lawyer wanting to learn from the best. Not a courtroom in sight, but a fantastic thriller just the same. Highly recommended to any who love a legal thriller .

This was highly-enjoyable, tightly written legal thriller. Not being a lawyer by profession, it was interesting to become immersed in this world. I also enjoyed watching Sophia grow into herself as she learned the ins and outs of working in a leading LA law firm as a former teacher, she had to abandon parts of her ‘nice’ persona to make it in this hard-edged world, it the way she finds a balance is fascinating to watch. And then with a very mysterious death in the office to deal with makes things even more intense, as she realises that she can’t trust anybody. The writing is spot on, and the writer has a great feel for the genre, aptly summarising Sophia’s predicament: “survival in a den of thieves and possibly a murderer, from whom she had no ready means of escape—no other firm to which she could jump, not yet.” I also enjoyed all the intrigue and plotting going on behind the scenes, which really kept me wondering how far some characters would go to get what they want, and how much they would get away with.
The book is intelligently written and deeply engaging, showing the author’s insight into the legal profession and the darker side of human nature. Highly recommended.

I received a free ARC of this book from Goodreads First Reads.

I'm rounding this up to 3 stars. It was a fast-moving pace, had a good plot, and overall was enjoyable. The biggest thing the novel needs is stronger editing. The flow was off, it was too long at about 500 pages, and sometimes the author got mired down in descriptions of law firm procedures and other actions.

Good read

I really enjoyed this book. Great that the author injected facts about the practice of law. That made the story intriguing. Even though the lead female character was dumb about true love, I couldn't help but hoping she caught on. Though it was easy to guess the murderer, the ending was done well

Poor attempt to disguise a sucky romance novel.

I've worked at huge law firms where billable hours and client recruitment were critical to advancement, no one was this stupid about it. And having assisted with lawsuits to get women into big firms, the constant dreamy eyed musings of the 'heroine' were off putting, to be kind.

Very Disappointing

This book was full of trite, improbable, and one-dimensional characters. Their voices are repetitive, and the storyline predictable. Unfortunately, this is no thriller.

A very good book written well with a close look into a corporate attorney office. It delves into big firm attorney's practices and how there is mistrust within the firm. All the characters have a reason for committing the murder. You're kept guessing who the murderer is until the end.

I enjoyed the premise and storyline; I feel that the author was "writing down" to the audience with the "too many chapters and its titles" and trying to make us believe that Sophia (an excellent lawyer) did not "see" too many clues which would have saved her much pain and aggravation.
