New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, cats, retired greyhounds, and an old, foul-mouthed parrot. She traveled the world for seven years, attended three universities, married the vocalist of her favorite rock band, and retired from her quantitative analyst career in 2014 to write full-time.

Her interests veer toward the unconventional: bourbon, full-body tattoos, and tragic villains. Equally peculiar are her aversions to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.

I CrAzY loved 'Sea of Ruin' one clicked this freebie way back on release day!!

Seriously if you've not read 'Sea of Ruin' it fast became a 2020 favourite of mine! It was dark, gritty, and boy did it tick my boxes! Highly recommend!!

Oh how I wish this was included where it was rightfully meant to be in ‘Sea of Ruin,’ just so it flowed better, but I am glad I got to see how they officially met, even though it was only a short taste of all the goodness we got to read in sea of ruin.

2 'King of Libertines, my ass' stars

This review is rated R for rant
I can't believe that this tiny novella (actually four chapters in total), annoyed the hell out of me. But I guess, I already ran out of tolerance in 2020. So just a heads up, things are going to get ugly because I'm gonna tear these characters apart. You have been warned!! Also, possible spoilers!!

I'm annoyed, yes, but I also wanna be fair, so first of all (and most) I will blame myself and my misguided expectations. I saw dark and pirates and I got so hyped it was almost dangerous for my health. I was like 'this book is gonna be my dreams come true.' Well, not exactly. I should've known better. My perception of dark is much much much darker than most readers, so when people say dark, it's usually... - let's just say I came up with darker stuff when I was five (I was a creepy child, what can I say 🤷‍♀️).

So, in this not-so-dark pirate romance, we have a female pirate Captain Bennett Sharp, who is a typical-assassin-wannabe heroine from every YA fantasy. This chick is so badass (*cough*tries to be*cough*) that she wears four daggers in her boots. Yes, FOUR!! Because one dagger or two is just not enough, you know. But, hun, you have to walk around in these boots and I can't imagine this is very comfortable. And don't get me started on the fact she probably doesn't even know how to use a dagger, let alone four of them. You can have four daggers on your person only if you are from Assassin's Creed and Bennett obviously isn't Edward Kenway's daughter.

So to be perfectly clear here, I love badass heroines. But only those, who are actually badass. And I'm sorry but I just didn't get the impression that Bennett is capable of leading a pirate ship. She speaks all the time about how she can resolve everything with her sword but until I will see with my own eyes (ok, read about it on the page) how she guts a man from the navel up to the neck, then and only then I will believe that she's the captain of a pirate ship. The truth is, if these men were actually proper pirates, they would've already eaten her for breakfast. No scratch that - for an appetizer. She's a woman trying to rule in a men's world and for that, she should've been twice as cruel and cunning to survive. But instead of that, she's crying herself to sleep because of a man she met a week ago. Excuse me?!?! Are you for real?? Besides he went to fuck another woman, not being sent to the gallows *insert multiple roll eyes*

And speaking of this 'King of libertines'. Why should I believe that he's called a king of libertienes, when all I saw him do, is having three whores in his chamber and not touching any of them because he's pinning after our "fierce lady captain", who he saw once. Seriously??? I thought that his name Priest is supposed to be a provocation but I guess, he indeed is celibate as one. Actually, even more. And what was that with him being beaten up by a woman that he refused to have sex with?? This man, who is an exemptional fighter and a swordmaster and probably also have some ninja skills and can fight with a blindfold, got bested by some woman?? Can we please have a story about this mysterious lady? She seems to be the only one with balls around here.

Alright, rant over. I don't want to discourage anyone about not giving this book a try. Seriously, the writing is good and the premise is solid. However, if you are expecting a dark pirate story as I did, there's a chance you're gonna be disappointed.

Now, I will go pray to the sea gods that Sea of Ruin won't suck. And when I'll (probably) whine about it that it does suck, you all have permission to say "We told you so!"

Bonus content:
This book in one meme

P.S. For more of my sarcastic comments, take a look at my notes and highlights 👆

P.P.S. If you want to read Sea of Ruin, I advise you to skip this tiny novella and go straight to the book because it's much better. Just don't expect too much and you'll be fine as you can see in my review of SoR.

P.P.P.S. I'm really proud of my anti pussy pirates campaign and I'm sad it got lost in the comments, so I'm sharing it here 😎😎

Source of book: Bought by me
Relevant disclaimers: None
Please note: This review may not be reproduced or quoted, in whole or in part, without explicit consent from the author.

And remember: I am not here to judge your drag, I mean your book. Books are art and art is subjective. These are just my personal thoughts. They are not meant to be taken as broader commentary on the general quality of the work. Believe me, I have not enjoyed many an excellent book, and my individual lack of enjoyment has not made any of those books less excellent or (more relevantly) less successful.

Further disclaimer: Readers, please stop accusing me of trying to take down “my competition” because I wrote a review you didn’t like. This is complete nonsense. Firstly, writing isn’t a competitive sport. Secondly, I only publish reviews of books in the subgenre where I’m best known (queer romcom) if they’re glowing. And finally: taking time out of my life to read an entire book, then write a detailed review about it that some people on GR will look at would be a profoundly inefficient and ineffective way to damage the careers of other authors. If you can’t credit me with simply being a person who loves books and likes talking about them, at least credit me with enough common sense to be a better villain.

*******************************************

This was free and there’s a special circle of hell reserved for people who whine about free stuff so … I won’t.

Much.

I’ll just say that I felt this could easily have been included in the original book and it’s fairly insubstantial. While I like that Priest and Bennett had a pre-existing relationship, I always personally felt he was somewhat under-developed (emotionally anyway) compared to Ashley Wossname. This doesn’t really do a lot more to establish him nor his and Bennett’s relationship really: it’s pretty much insta-love and much of their connection comes across as exposition:

We talked about our adventures at sea, our favorite ports, and our bloodiest battles. We talked about many things, so incredibly riveted in what the other had to say neither of us seemed capable of pulling away.

Sadly, no dresses are erotically eaten in this story. Nor any appearances from Chekov’s citrus allergy: seriously apart from his powerfully large penis, the citrus allergy is Priest’s major characteristic. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW IT’S PRIEST IF HE DOESN’T HAVE A CITRUS ALLERGY?

There is, however, a strange device where the heroine visits the brothel where the hero, um, lives (?) and all the sex workers are like “omg, you’re amazing.” I don’t know if they’re just exceptional sex workers willing to give the gf experience to literally anyone who walks in the door or Bennett has such a profound aura of “dark romance heroine” that everyone else is just “eh, I’m clearly a secondary character, I’m not even going to bother.”

Here's the brothel madame:

“Your hair goes on forever. All those curls… Like golden fire. Oh, and those ocean eyes, graceful neck, tiny little waist… Mercy God.” Her hands fluttered, stroking the air around my body. “You’re magnificent beyond what any man could ever imagine a woman to be.”

Lady, you are HIRED. A+ sex working.

In any case, I was more than happy to return, even if slightly too briefly, to the gloriously bonkers world of Sea of Ruin.

Godwin: This novella is about a female pirate capta..
Me: CAPTAIN, like seriously a female PIRATE captain!? Like a female version of Captain Jack Sparrow just not as drunk and with blond hair?
Godwin: Well yeah...
Me: Okay, fine.. you convinced me😂
Also me: * humming Pirates of Caribbean theme song🏝

Bennett is a female pirate captain on the quest for her father lost treasure. Her father has left a compass that somehow is the key to finding the treasure and Bennett wants nothing more.

In order to do that she needs the help of no other than handsome and overly cocky, Priest -aka the King of Libertines.
I died whenever his eyes were mentioned. How hot is silver eyes! #swoon

I will be checking out Sea Of Ruin that’s for sure.

5/14/20: Okay, now this is FREE on Amazon US so in that case, it’s definitely worth the price! And then some! Lol... scoop it up ASAP!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a fun teaser into the Sea of Ruin world. It was as hot and well-written as I’ve come to expect from Pam Godwin. We learn a little about Bennett, Priest, and his brother Reynolds (who already might be my favorite!) We also get to experience the meeting, instant attraction, and beginning of a relationship between Bennett and Priest. I already can tell that Bennett will be my kind of heroine- independent and fiery, but a little soft underneath. For now, at least.

Honestly, I probably would’ve given this 5 stars if it was 99 cents. But at $2.99, the length didn’t justify the price. But I knew the page count when I clicked “buy,” so that’s on me. I probably should’ve just bought the Australia anthology instead, because then I would’ve gotten more stories AND it would’ve been for a good cause 🤷‍♀️

It was fine. This author writes well. Well enough for me to check out the actual novel. And then I read the reviews.

3-somes I will NEVER like. I barely tolerated reading the Original Sinners (check my reviews). And Tiffany Reisz is a better writer, hands down.

So, will be putting the novel on my DO NOT TOUCH shelf.

Give me Sea of Ruin, ASAP!

I guess that this is a companion novel to Sea of Ruin. I read it before reading SOR, but I sort of wish I had read it after since it seems to have taken place during a time jump in SOR. I guess I’ll find out once I read it. I enjoyed this, so I can’t wait.

King Of Libertines is a prequel novella to the magnum opus Sea of Ruin
It's every inch as lusciously devious and Immorally decadent as the main story.
The purpose was for us to meet Oh-So-Devilishly Handsome Priest Ferrell
“Any woman with a pulse wouldn’t turn away Priest Farrell.
He lived in a brothel. They called him the goddamn king of libertines”

description

He's the rogue bandit himself, all women swoon at his feet and into his bed, only exception being Bennett Sharp, the rebel Girl pirate captain of Jade
It's just a tiny juicy morsel which gives you mere taste of the succulent story to come in Sea Of Ruin.

description

Fantastic start to a fabulous story which will remain in my top five for years to come....and I don't even read historical!!
See what a genius Pam is..
5 stars for Anchors Aweigh!!

I LOVED Sea of Ruin so when I saw this free novella about Bennett and Priest's first meeting, I couldn't resist.

This is a very short story, it does not give any additional information about them, but it was nice to see how they met, and how intense Priest was.

PIRATES ... PLUNDER ... PASSION -- THE KING OF LIBERTINES CAN RIP MY BODICE ANY DAY

“I met him on a hot and rainy day”

Pirates…and plunder…and passion. This is the prequel that appeared originally in the Australia anthology and does a bang-up job as lead-in to Pam’s much anticipated standalone SEA OF RUIN, where all the answers lie. I was smacking my lips at the 18th Century setup of a modernized take on a hot blonde-cum-legendary lady pirate named Bennett who wears sexy corsets with men’s trousers, knows her way around a knife, and commands her own ship on the high seas … up against a hotter than the sun “king of libertines” named Priest who plunders hearts and pirate ships. He wants to know the intriguing beauty, but she’s on a take-no-prisoners mission. Matched souls at odds over a compass, buried treasure, and love. Will he steal her heart and her ship?

“What began as an unstoppable explosion of passion forged into something pivotal, essential, and more.”

Can we just take a minute and gape shamelessly over this droolworthy cover. And, my gawd, Pam can put me in the middle of a story like nobody else. Her words are so rich and descriptive that I FEEL EVERYTHING – the smell of the salty air; the sea wind whipping in my hair; and the dark and dangerous spark of a pirate adventure coupled with bawdy lust on the high seas. Two adversaries who play seductive and rough, in and out of the sheets. Can Bennett trust Priest and what does he want? All my senses just sprang to life with crackling energy. In other words, this story lead-in to a much anticipated novel offers a really compelling version of a bodice ripper like no other, but with Pam’s signature style and a surprising knowledge of the period mixed with modern touches, the rowdy lifestyle of pirates, and language that kept me glued to the page.

Loved that prequel!

This was a great prequel of Sea of Ruin! I loved that we got to read the story between Priest and our heroine, even if it was fast paced and short. But still I appreciated this extra novella of this world and characters that I loved!

What a prequel! And that cover?! This book deserves a bonus star just for the majesty that is the cover. If you’ve been on the fence about diving into the intoxicating Sea of Ruin- this is a great place to wet your appetite (water pun intended). This prequel was original in the Australian anthology- and was the most enticing morsel in the batch.

There’s a lot out there as far as romance tropes go- historical and contemporary alike, but there have been out there that satisfy my swashbuckling, plundering, shiver-me-timbers sexy pirate love that are more that have more than just erotic content. Just from the prequel short story alone you can tell this story will have a captivating story to match the steam factor- and that this world, and this story, is truly unique. A precious gem in a sea of pebbles. (yeh, I went there).

The prequel introduces us to Bennett- the daughter of an infamous pirate and a fierce pirate in our own right- and Priest, our namesake King of the Libertines. Pam drops us straight into the story and never lets you go- the all-consuming passion, the intoxicating chemistry, the fascinating old world dynamics, the secrets and betrayal, the hunt for treasures real and metaphorical- you’ll be hooked. If you’re new to this type of story or new to the author, this is a great way to get a taste to see if you want to dive into the extremely riveting, shocking, and unusual Sea of Ruin. Fair warning that there are elements to that story (very “non traditional dynamics,” triggers, dark components) that might not be for everyone- but if you like your romance unpredictable, unusual, and extremely sexy and entrancing, this story is for you.

King of Libertines is a delicious, little taste of Bennett and Priest and how they meet. I was immediately pulled in, eagerly devouring every word, savoring every bit of their lust and passion.

Imagine the sexiest, most virile, and possessive pirate ever, and you’ll get Priest Farrell.

Bennett is a BA captain of her pirate ship. She kicks ass and demands respect, and gets it.

Bennett and Priest together? Intoxicating. Powerful. Their sizzling chemistry made me tingle in all the right places.

In this short yet hardy story, Ms. Godwin created a perfect pirate world, gave me characters who captured my heart, and made me crave more. An outstanding beginning to the Sea of Ruin.

This book falls chronologically between chapters 5 & 6 of Sea of Ruin. I’m glad I read it while I’m also reading Sea of Ruin because it’s more enjoyable to read it in order.

This gave great insight into the main characters, their history, and how they met. This novella got me excited to see how the rest of the story would pan out. Bennett and Priest are so cute, but I’m still wary of Priest. Their romance seems a little too blissful. 👀

For a novella, this was....okay. I feel like I have opposing thoughts compared to many though when I say that I thought this story was just mediocre. I loved the aspect of a female Captain on a pirate ship but the rest of the story just didn't feel developed enough (which is understandable I suppose considering it's a novella).

It was a hot and steamy read but some of the language used in the dialogue made me cringe because instead of coming across as sexy, it seemed over the top and awkward.

This was a quick read and I hope once I read "Sea of Ruin", I appreciate this short story more.
