The time is now. Ever since he first set foot in Liora, Charles had to suffer the Tradesmen’s criminal practices, but now is the time for him to strike back and take them down for good.
But as our dear Champion gets ready to make his move, his plans are smashed to bits. While he counted on his trading with Liskoa to bring him the money needed to fund his retaliation, he can only watch as a pirate ship sinks one of his vessels, cutting off the cash coming in.
As it turns out, those pirates received their orders from a city under Tradesmen management. Willing to investigate the matter, Charles decides to pay the place a visit. Maybe there’s a way he can sway the guildmaster and get him in his pocket, just like he did with Tanders… His hopes quickly vanish when he finds that two factions are really governing the city, and none is interested in challenging the status quo. Thankfully, not all is lost. Working on a side operation, Charles manages to secure some gunpowder that might allow him to research cannon technology, which could arm his ships and improve the defenses of Brightwinds…
Join Charles as the borders of his small empire continue to expand, threatening to gobble up that of an allied force. Join him as yet another advisor slot opens, allowing him to finally appoint a Spymaster and create an intelligence network to help him subvert his enemies.
I rated the first three books 5/5 but unfortunately I didn't get the same feeling from this one, everything seemed to be rushed, it was enjoyable at times, for sure, new discoveries made etc, but I just felt like we were rushing from one point to another, constantly, I didn't feel as immersed in this story as I did in the others, a good read, but a let down all the same, I hope the author can redeem what they've lost from the first three titles.
It was pretty good, basically the same feel as the last 3 books. It does feel like Charles gets everything handed to him in this book, not that unusual for the series but a little more extreme than the others.
I am not sure but this might be the last book in the series. It does leave everything mostly wrapped not like some of the lit series I have read while giving some room if they want to create a new series or add to this one.
Another exciting exploration of the litrpg / progression fantasy series. Page turning, exciting, and leaves you guessing at each step. It also inspired me to play a game of civ 5 which I have not done in over a year. The author continues the world building by adding new features, quest paths, and the ending is extremely exciting; as if a game of EU4 or Civ5 was reaching a turning point. I am excited to read the next book and see what else the author has in store for the MC and the universe.
** Spoilers below** * * * * * I take back my criticisms from my review of Book 3. The MC took an honorable route that is not colonialism. More than that, he spent a lot of time being honorable and dismantling an oppressive capitalist system that already existed in the world. Leaving room for the creation of nation states and alliances to prevent the formation of other oppressive NPC states to fill the power vacuum left by the destruction of the Trade Guide NPC's.
A very excellent series that catches your attention immediately! One of my dreams was to someday be a trader in a Star ship and though this will not happen in my lifetime, this series made me feel as if I were a part of well developed trading future. The main character is well developed and the series is from his point of view. The supporting characters are well developed also, and the storyline moves fluidly from the beginning to the end and continuation of a trading empire. This series will make you want to keep reading until the last book is read. Forget about eating or bathroom breaks, lol!!!
Interesting as the story introduces a rather new genre: Civilization manager. Unfortunately, the author seems not to know the genre well himself which results in having the characters act very naive and stupid. The world is extremely two dimensional and flat. The main character is supposed to be a genius but keeps acting like an impulsive bufoon throughout the entire series. Business talk, constant bribes and an utter incomprehension of the feelings of others dominate the series.
With a slight shift in focus early on, the author manages to reinvigorate their world in a way that masterfully drags you further into the unfolding story. New alliances, new peoples to meet and some good old fashioned fighting made this a fantastic read.
I continue to enjoy this very different series which is focused more on world building and economics than it is on combat. This series has held me reasonably well given I tend to like combat driven stories a lot. No romance, a lot of intrigue, and we get to meet the big dragons in this book. What's not to love?
Charles is very busy with his new seaport and building new trade routes. The tradies find ways to disrupt his plans. Pesky tradies. He has to find a way to deal with them and their corrupt monopolistic ways. I like the action, humor, and intrigue. I look forward to the next book.
While I’ve enjoyed Karevik’s civ builder series so far, one of my biggest complaints has been its seeming lack of scaling. Enemies are continually being quelled, trade profits grow on multiple fronts, but the empire our hero leads stays small. That’s no longer the case. With the groundwork laid, everything surges ahead at breakneck speed and it’s glorious!
I have never liked it when books just end suddenly. There was room for more. Unresolved questions that need to be answered. Guess we just have to wait for the next one
The first arc of this series is done. There is some action but this is mostly intrigue and does a great job of it. The setup at the end for the next story arc has me wanting to see what happens next
This story of a Champions World is fantastic. Our guy is building his empire through being a merchant, but first he must take on the Guild who controls it all. Great Read
I've enjoyed the series and will keep reading it. That said I wish the lead character were more multidimensional. He needs to do something besides work. A girlfriend or something.
Great continuation of the story. The MC continues to smartly plot his way through adversity. Has some good city building elements, I wanted to see more payoff from the tech and buildings that were unlocked. Overall, a great read!
An engaging series, with a pleasant twist. How Charles develops is surprisingly fascinating. These books somehow reduce my stress, and that is worth four stars, but it earns the stars on its own merit. Excellent narrative.
What a fun ride! And we're only halfway through the series. This book mostly tied up most loose ends. But still left many other questions. I fear it will not answer them as well in the next books when compared with the first four books, but we shall see.
For those that love 4x games and kingdom building this is a great continuation of the story. Not to many surprising parts of the story but still awesome to read.
I had put off reading this book because I needed a break from the series but once i started reading I remembered why I liked this series so much to begin with.
