Rate this book
What if happily ever after starts with a broken heart?

For Lacey Graham, this reality was way too real. When her plan to surprise her fiancé results in heartbreak, Lacey’s only option is to reset her mind and her life.

Landing in San Francisco, Lacey befriends an interesting co-worker, and is coaxed into joining an online dating site so that she can get back into the game.

Though hesitant, Lacey once again puts her heart on the line and meets Kenneth – a man who’s good with his hands and apparently Lacey’s heart. Between passion-filled moments and tantalizing sensations, Lacey is convinced that Kenneth could be a wonderful complement to her new life. Yet nothing good comes easy.

Just as Lacey is getting comfortable with the idea of being swept away in Kenneth’s arms, a troublesome revelation rears its head. Someone is starting drama with the intent to destroy Lacey’s new love.

The only question is, how hard will she fight for what she’s always wanted?

*NOTE: I received an advance review copy from Book Sirens, in exchange for an honest review*

Overall, I would good this book 2.5 stars. It has a lot of potential! I think the story line is good and surprisingly not predictable which was a breath of fresh air! I wish I would have gotten the entire story, not that cliffhanger abrupt ending, but i am learning that sometimes with these ARCs, you only get a teaser i guess. Anyway, Definitely excited to see where Abigail takes this book and what Amber has in store, bc we know she is cooking up something! Fave thing about this book...DIVERSITY! I LOVED seeing my color represented in this novel, i read so many books where the MC is Caucasian and don't get me wrong --there is nothing wrong with that. But i think it automatically sets me up to be disconnected from the story. So of course when I began this book and the author began describing the MCs as POCs, I was invested! I love when I can actually envision these MCs --it reels me into the story even quicker.

A couple of critiques: 1) the writing style. I didn't like it. It was very "stream of consciousness." The sentences ended abruptly and made the book very choppy and disjunctive. 2) Grammar errors/typos! There were too many to overlook and because of them was I found myself re-reading quite a few sentences just to understand what the author meant by it. 3) Insta-love! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, in this book, Kenneth's and Lacey's romance didn't work! Everything was happening way to fast for my liking. There was one point in the book where i legit screamed, OUT LOUD! I am refraining from going into details so as to not post any spoilers, but if/when you read this book, you will immediately know the part I am referring to! It was too unrealistic for me and at that point my interest in the storyline waned a bit.

Ive stressed in so many of my reviews, how important it is for authors to make sure there is an adequate "passing of time" ...we readers understand that this is a book and there are only so many pages can write where actual "courting" of the MCs occur. However, it makes us readers fall in love with the MCs love when it is believable. This whirlwind romance was not believable for me bc everything happened soo quickly.

Okay, rant over! Aside from those 3 things I took issue with. I think this book has potential to be great.

I love the way the heroine handled catching her fiance and best friend in bed. She handled the situation with style and class. If it were me, my cheating ex-best friend would have left my apartment without a stitch of clothing on because she definitely wouldn't have liked Option B. She was able to have a rational conversation that same day with her ex-fiance and admitted that she perhaps neglected him. I was awed. Now, let's get something straight, a man cheats because he wants to and not because you did or didn't do something. If he felt neglected, he should have said something. Communication is key in any relationship. It's just ratchet to screw her best friend, pick somebody else if it had to happen.

This betrayal happens right on the heels of her making a new life for herself in San Francisco. In San Fran, she meets a friendly neighbor and co-worker and they start to hang out. Eventually, she shares her past pain with neighbor and her neighbor shares how she's dating several (Sugar Daddies) men and directs her to a dating website to get her love life resurrected. The heroine posts her profile and gets several bites and ends up going out with one in particular. Though, he's not her type, she still has a good time.

Their relationship was in warp speed mode and I didn't feel their connection because they didn't spend much time together. I never found out if he became her type, or if she was just settling. A good man, is a good man. When a pivotal moment happened, I was shocked and just couldn't see how they arrived at that destination. This story (boo) ended on a cliffhanger, it had potential but it didn't get there for me. Love the book cover!

Lacey is starting all over with a broken heart in a new city, with a new job, new friends, and soon, a new man. What will happen when her new “friend” threatens her happiness?

This is my first time reading this author and I’m not sure of her writing style with her other books, but I wasn’t a fan of the stream of consciousness POV here. The story is very engaging and it flows nicely, but I just couldn’t vibe with the writing style.

The story is considered an interracial romance, but Lacey’s (a black woman) love interest is biracial (black/white) which makes this a 75% black romance ( does the one drop rule apply here?).

Overall, a good story that does abruptly end. I wouldn’t consider it a cliffhanger, just a mid story stop. So keep that in mind. Will I pick up part 2? Probably.

1.0 ⭐️

I made a sincere attempt to enjoy this book. Lacey is a corporate executive. She’s been working overtime, with her eyes on a higher paying position at a San Francisco tech firm which offers her room for advancement, something that is unavailable at her present firm. Subsequently, Lacey is offered the San Francisco job. Melvin, her fiancé, is unaware of Lacey’s future plans for them. Lacey can’t wait to surprise Melvin with this fantastic news and their upcoming relocation. Lacey has accumulated enough money, not only to get them settled in a new home, but to help Melvin start a new business venture. She is overjoyed because all of her hard work has paid off, and she knows Melvin will be happy too; however, things don’t go as planned. This is the basic storyline of the book, and it sounded very promising.

Nevertheless, to my dismay, the further I read, the more distracted I became. I wondered why my attention waned, and why the book failed to capture and hold my interest. After reviewing my highlights and notes, I pinpointed the answer to this puzzle.

Primarily, the writing style itself is just not well-suited for this particular story. Frankly, Lacey’s constant inner monologues as they relate to her present or future actions, her musings, her observations, impressions and other persistent ramblings are irritating. Consider the following excerpt taken from page 13:

Crap. Forgot to tell her to request that report from Brad. Oh well, do it in the morning. More important stuff to worry about. Wonder how Melvin would feel about a fresh start. Selling our furniture. All new stuff. Bought together. New house reflecting both our styles. But definitely more mine. I had better taste. Hands down. Had to laugh at myself for that one. Too many emotions. Excited. Nervous. But this was the start of our future together. Now, imagine the entire book in this same vein. No, I just couldn’t do it.

Further, I wasn’t fond of the excessive use of slang by both black and white characters. The following is a conversation between Lacey, her friend Amber, and a guy talking to Lacey:

“What’s up, bruh?” Amber jumped in. Caught him off guard. “I was trying to holla at your friend,” he said. “Well then holla, playa,” she said. I was laughing my ass off.” Aight, sista and brotha are also prevalent throughout. I could barely stand it.

Moreover, in a note to readers, the author states the following: “If you find any mistakes or errors while you’re reading, please email me at … and I will make sure to get it corrected.” OK, at first glance that's wonderful. But, wait. Why, exactly, is the reader supposed to be the author’s editor? Typically, my expectation is that a book has been thoroughly edited. Well, f*ck my expectation in this case— glaring errors and editing issues abound up to page 99 (some of which I highlighted until I tired of it 😫).

After I’ve taken everything into account, it’s abundantly clear that I have fundamental issues with this book. Nevertheless, I will read another book written by this author. Undoubtedly, other readers may disagree with my take on this book. So, have at it. I’m not willing to read any further. (42%)

I recently created a profile in BookSirens and one of the first book I was drawn to was this one. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In this book we follow Lacey Graham, who after experiencing a heartbreak, moves to San Francisco to a new job and new opportunities. San Francisco Love is an interracial romance with a guaranteed happily ever after.

I liked the main character, she is a strong female character and I was happy she was represented in the book and I really liked the love interest, he was sweet and ambitious and I thought he was a strong secondary character. Overall was very intrigued why the premise of the book, I read it really quickly and I did really enjoy it, however there were a few things I was no 100% on board with.

For example, one of my main complaints was that there was a cliff hanger, this book is not marked as a series (one of the main reasons I requested it) and then in the end you get a cliff hanger that means that there will be another book. However, all of this said, I will read the next book in the series, I really want to know what happens and I think this book was a great way to set the tone of the series. I really believe the author has a lot of potential and I want to see what she can do next.

This book was a little unrealistic, the amount of time it took the couple to go from one point in their relationship to the other was ridiculously fast. I wanted to know more about the relationship, I wanted to know if she fell in love or if she just settled, I wanted to know what they were feeling like, I wanted to see them flirt I wanted to fall in love with them.

My final point was the writing, I was not very into de writing at all, it seemed “unprofessional” and the amount of times it said sista or brotha was insane. The slang was a bit too much to read, it was used so much that it started to be too much.

In the end I think this book had great potential but I wanted more, I wanted more of the story, I wanted to read about things in detail that were only mentioned and I wanted to fall in love alongside the characters. This book is good, and I am so happy I have read it, I will definitely read the next installment of the series.

Thanks to the publisher, author and BookSirens for letting me read and review this book.

Want a short read with no fluff? You got San Francisco Love.

Rose captures a lady protagonist who doesn't mess around. She may hesitate, but she stands by her boundaries. She has her vices and she's not going to apologize for having them. She may yearn for what has been, yet she avoids beating herself up over her losses. She may cry now and then, before getting herself back to work like a pro.

After reading so many wavering protagonists in a row, Lacey is a breath of fresh air. Her assertiveness and self-awareness reaches to everything in the story, right down to the curt descriptions. Lacey doesn't mess around. And somehow, with her heart being broken up, she still tries to have a good time. Wonderful stuff.

Put aside Lacey and the delightful examples of women empowerment in a corporate workplace, and my interest slides. The romance that had been promised on the cover felt flat. Perhaps it's a set-up to a later turnaround, a deeper revelation? While I liked the dramatic irony that is taking place, I'm wondering where Rose is going with this in the future. Will this be a series?

What doesn't help is the bulk of the romantic conversations feel controlled. Most of them take place in a bar or a restaurant. Always commenting on the price tag of the meal. I get it, they're busy people. Both working on businesses. Yet while other type of dates and family meetings are mentioned, they don't take center stage. Unless it's not meant to be? That's where I struggle to believe their chemistry.

I'm going along thinking, "Lacey, you can do better than this." Especially by the end.

San Francisco Love has writing that pops. Great for anyone reading on their phones or anything portable. Like it was made for them. While the romance wasn't exactly my thing, I did enjoy Lacey and her interactions with her coworkers. And she handled her breakup at the start like a boss. I'm all for that.

San Francisco Love is my first read from author Abiegail Rose. The main female character, Lacey, experiences a very serious betrayal that leads her to a fresh start in a new city. Once in San Francisco, Lacey begins her dream job and finds some friendly neighbors to hang out with, some of whom are actually her co-workers. As Lacey is recovering from her own personal heartbreak, her friend convinces her to try out an online dating site. Lacey tries to find companionship, but even as she is trying to rebuild her life, she has no idea that someone in her close circle means her ill will. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but I’m not sure that I knew that before I started reading the story. It would’ve been nice to know that to prepare myself for the emotional turn of events on top of knowing that I have to wait for the next installment to find out how the story concludes. There are instances in the story when the passage of time is unclear, which sometimes makes the sequence of events a bit tricky to follow. I enjoyed the story and the fact that Lacey was a well-written multi-dimensional black woman with a real life and real complications in that real life. I’m also a huge fan of the realistic dialogue between Lacey and her sister and friends. It reminds me of conversations I’ve either heard or been a part of, which lends itself to creating more authenticity. I will be eagerly waiting for book two so that I can get closure on Lacey and Ken’s story.

The main reason I’m only giving this book four stars is because it’s a cliffhanger, which I don’t like very much. If I’d had some warning, that would have been appreciated, but since I didn’t, I took a star away. Now, for the writing. This is actually a good story. Lacey is a successful black woman and she’s engaged to Melvin. She gets home early from work and catches Melvin and Denise, her best friend, in bed together. Looks like she’ll be heading to San Francisco for her new job without Melvin. Things go pretty quickly in the story and she makes new friends at her job and in her apartment complex. Amber is one of those friends, but is she a friend or foe? Lacey gets on the dating app, recommendation from Amber, San Francisco Love, and starts dating Kenneth DuPont, a white successful auto body shop owner. Things progress quickly in the storyline and they see each other frequently, except for the three weeks he ignored her. When he comes back around, he tells her he had to end things with someone else he was seeing, but they never had sex during the six months they were dating, yeah, sure they didn’t, lol. I won’t say anything else about the story, except I need book two NOW, lol. I want to know what happens, hopefully this year.

Lacey experiences serious heartbreak before leaving for San Francisco. She did not allow that to set her mood. She was guarded for a reasonable amount of time but then she decided to try again. She felt like she was in control of her destiny, life, and love. Lacey was a strong woman to me at times. Then at other times, she felt a tad bit on the naive side. She didn't connect the dots. Example: Based on her experiences, I thought she would have asked more questions about Ken. Her friend Amber mentioned she dated a man with some of the same specifics as Ken. Yet, Lacey asked NOTHING! Lacey connected nothing. If he ghosted her for 3 months, what about him made her give him another chance?

Amber behaved strangely for initially meeting someone. I had concerns about Amber from the start. I wondered if Amber had some hater-ration for Lacey because of the job. It was never stated directly but I believe she did.

I don't like cliffhangers. As I'm getting into the book and the characters, it flatlines. It's over. I needed more. I wanted more in that instances. I did not want to wait for the next installment.

My rating is a strong 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the story. For a higher rating, I needed more history about who seem to be the three main characters: Amber, Lacey, and Kenneth.

This book had great potential, truly. The story was good, the heroine was a force to be reckoned with. She stood her ground, pushed herself in her dreams, and followed her heart. The diversity was lovely (something that is not always seen in many novels these days to be completely honest. Brava on that note!

My issues with the story in general come from a few main issues. First, the love story seemed a bit rushed in my honest opinion. I’m not sure if the cliffhanger at the end was due to my copy of the book being an ARC or not, but I feel if not, then the story should have a more “fully formed” ending rather than the one we were given. Second, there was a lot of slang in the dialogue. Don’t get me wrong, slang is fine, as long as it does not feel forced (which this did to me). It felt at times as if I was reading a screenplay rather than a novel. Third, it was sometimes hard to follow due to the back and forth POV of characters. I had to re-read certain parts of the book just to try to remember certain POV and whose I was currently on.

Overall, the story was a nice escape, but could definitely be improved on.

Love shouldn't be this hard. This story takes you on a journey beginning with heartache at the very moment everything should be going right in the herione's life. She was much more mature in handling her business than I ever would have been. At one point I thought she handled adversity and peer pressure too calmly and accepting.

I enjoyed the story line and the direction the writer was taking me. But I couldn't get past the grammatical errors and the simplicity in the writing style. I found myself highlighting the errors and restructuring sentences instead of enjoying the story.

I also wanted more from the characters and I was getting a lot of dialogue. Then right when I felt the story picking up steam, it stops. I hope the next part stays on that high for awhile, because it took a minute to get there.

I haven’t read a book like this in a long time.

Lacey has it going on!! She’s a professional in the corporate world, she’s a black woman, she’s engaged to the love of her life, everything is just perfect, until it isn’t anymore, and that’s one of the sad parts.

The way Lacey handled herself, took her new job with stride and the way she goes about her new life in general was so admirable.

I love the tone of the characters makes me feel like I know them, and makes reading this book so easy, even though sometimes the slang can be a little off putting, I say the slang a lot but to read it? I couldn’t help but laugh. Other than that i liked this read.

Thank you to Booksiren for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

Told in alternating POV the reader follows multiple characters actions and trains of thought through this tale of relationships and second chances. It has one of the most civilized breakups I’ve ever read. I liked that Lacey is independent, smart and sexy. She recovers well from a heartbreak and is considerate in thought and deed. Unfortunately there are people close to her that are not so caring. Sometimes the story felt a little confusing in terms of setting/time passing. It ends on a cliffhanger that should be noted in the author’s blurb. I’m curious enough to see how this ends in the next book. 3.5 stars

This book has so much potential to be a cute story but it fell flat for me. The synopsis is interesting but the story felt rushed and the writing felt unfinished almost like reading a draft version; a lot of the sentence structure was choppy and disjointed and I prefer to know when the point of view will be changing between characters . Prior to this book, I read some really amazing black love stories and stories with black female leads and I was so excited to jump into this one but I just didn’t have the same feelings.

This is a very well developed story! The main characters are interesting and personable. even though we don't meet the hero until about halfway thru the book, it feels like enters the story at the perfect time. I love that the characters work up to their relationship. There's also a great group of minor characters keeping the story interesting. The story has great build up; but leaves you hanging.

I loved this story. I liked the fact that even though Lacey's world exploded when she found her fiance cheating she didn't let it define her. Moving to San Francisco for her new job she met quite a few interesting people. From the start I was not to sure about Amber but we will see how it plays out. I like Kenneth and Lacey together I hope they don't let people come between them. I can't wait to see how this story ends.

This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the story. The characters were well-developed and had realistic and relatable qualities. I especially liked Lacey's character who had real problems and complications that made the story more realistic. I will definitely be looking for the next book to see what happens with Lacey and Ken’s story.

It was a good story. I didn’t know it was a book with a cliffhanger and wished I knew that before reading because that would have impacted my choice to read or not. The characters were good and the story had a good flow.

Lacey went through a terrible heartbreak after catching her boyfriend Melvin in the bed with her best friend. To make matters worse, she was expecting his baby. Lacy admitted her part in the breakdown of their relationship. They reached out to talk, but she decided she didn't want anything to do with neither one of them.

Lacey moved to San Francisco for a better job opportunity. She took notice of the interracial relationships and thought about how it wasn't something she was into. Lacey immediately met some new friends who also lived in the same building. They decided to go out that same night to a local bar.

Lacey finally begins to start dating, and she goes for a guy who isn't her typical type. She starts to fall for Kenneth. Things were going well until he vanished for three weeks. When he returned, he was honest with her about his disappearance. They were getting on track with their relationship until someone from his past finds out.

This was a great story, and I cant wait to see what is going to happen next. Will Lacey ever get her happily ever after? Will she regret going outside of her normal relationship standards. Although I enjoyed the story and characters, I did not like that it ends in with a cliffhanger.

This is part 1 of this story. Lacey walks into her worst nightmare-her fiance cheating with her best friend. She has just received news of a job offer in San Francisco. So she packs her bags and moves anyway. With encouragement from her new work colleague Amber, she meets Kenneth on a dating site Amber suggested her to try. Kenneth and Lacey hit it off and start seeing each other seriously. It's plain sailing until someone else notices and their troubles begin. Good story line and nice read. Looking forward to the follow on.
