As many of my friends will tell you, my standards aren't exactly high where the quality of my reading material is concerned but I draw the line somewhere. And what always annoys me are authors who drop foreign language phrases into their books without checking them with someone who actually speaks the language. No, those little dots on some of our letters aren't fancy decoration you can leave off if you're too lazy to open your special character menu. They actually mean something. And if I, a native speaker of the language you are violently abusing via god knows what online dictionary or third rate machine translation engine you used, have to spend a considerable amount of time staring at a sentence to figure out what you meant...

("We sat and drank Zitronen" btw...which I guess means lemonade but how on earth you got there I don't know)

A romance coated in high suspense
'The Tower' by Joslyn Chase is a suspense romance that begins in a private home in Bavaria, Germany where wounded soldiers are being treated in the days immediately following World War II. The nation is shattered, torn, and defeated. Emotional wounds are tender and fresh as physical ones when two soldiers straggle into the yard of the home. They carry a third man between them. An American. He is in dire need of medical care.
Dr. Schreiner insists the man be brought inside his home for treatment and his daughter, Laura, becomes the man’s nurse. This is her story. Oh my. Resentments and misunderstandings so hot on the heels of the vicious war resist the attraction between these two. Surely, they can never become one, can they? Can they? The dark, lightening-stroked tower on the cover of this book promises that theirs will not be an easy romance, and it is not. The American, Thomas, does mend, but then he leaves for home, and Laura’s life is forever changed. I wondered how her story could end well. And then it got much worse.
I enjoyed seeing how the main character Laura Schreiner grows through the course of her story. As she says herself, “…I gained the fortitude to endure…” only by walking her difficult path. This statement resonated for me right from the beginning.
I chose this book because I’ve read two others by Joslyn Chase and knew she could weave a great suspense story. True to the cover, the tension throughout this novel is high. The mystery is intriguing up to the very end and the romance hits every note. This is a fine addition to Joslyn’s work.

Some people will stop at nothing to get what they want. Lars was one of those people. He was also a narcissist with a very mean streak as Laura was to discover on their wedding night. If not for her son and her father's love, I doubt she would have kept her sanity.

Lars, and his equally vicious reporter friend, have set Laura up to be charged with murder when Lars dies. The plan has been well thought out. Will they succeed or will the truth come out? Read it yourself to find out.

Note to author: Write the novel. Pretty please with sugar on top!

This Romantic Suspense novella has a lot going for it. As I followed along Laura's story, my heart went out for her through all the terrible things she endured. There were plenty of twists that blindsided me in this story and kept me turning the page hoping everything would work out. This little story is one of those hidden gems that I stumbled upon and it is well worth the read.
