She loves him. He loves her. If only each knew the other's heart.
Kitty Bennet hadn't meant she would never marry the gentleman she was caught kissing. She had only meant she couldn't marry him just yet. She has a promise to keep first. However, before she can explain herself to him, he tosses her heart back at her in a thousand broken pieces.
Lorcan Langley is in love with Kitty, but when she declares she has no desire to marry him, he comes to the heart-rending decision to give her what she wants - a future without him.
As both Lorcan and Kitty attempt to move on with their lives into bleak futures without the person they love, a broken wheel will bring their plans to a screeching and potentially disastrous end.
Leenie Brown has always been a girl with an active imagination, which, while growing up, was both an asset, providing many hours of fun as she played out stories, and a liability, when her older sister and aunt would tell her frightening tales. At one time, they had her convinced Dracula lived in the trunk at the end of the bed she slept in when visiting her grandparents!
Although it has been years since she cowered in her bed in her grandparents’ basement, she still has an imagination which occasionally runs away with her, and she feeds it now as she did then ─ by reading!
Her heroes, when growing up, were authors, and the worlds they painted with words were (and still are) her favourite playgrounds! Now, as an adult, she spends much of her time in the Regency world, playing with the characters from her favourite Jane Austen novels and those of her own creation.
When she is not traipsing down a trail in an attempt to keep up with her imagination, Leenie resides in the beautiful province of Nova Scotia with her two sons and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley, and Edmund with a healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tilney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).
Although this is about Kitty Bennet (her name IS in the title!), much of her romance has already happened before this story starts. The significant problem between her and Lorcan Langley was a cliffhanger set up in the previous book in this series, Persuading Miss Mary: A Pride and Prejudice Variation. We learn that Kitty and Langley fell in love previously and that they were discovered in a passionate kiss at Matlock House. He offered to marry her, but she refused him. It's all a misunderstanding due to a promise she made to her dear friend Georgiana, but she doesn't tell him that.
In the Prologue here, Kitty's family (Mr. Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and Lord and Lady Matlock) confronts him. Langley recinds his offer, telling them that he doesn't really wish to marry her unless it becomes necessary in order to save her reputation. In truth, he loves Kitty desperately but is trying to respect her refusal. She sits there in the room, silent (while I'm screaming in my head, "SAY SOMETHING!!") when Mr. Bennet asks if their decision not to become betrothed is mutual.
Kitty is devastated because she loves Langley just as much as he loves her and DOES want to marry him in the future, but she is determined to go through the full London season with Georgiana as she had promised. Now she believes Langley meant it when he told them all that he didn't love her.
The plot continues to make mountains out of molehills, with both Langley and Kitty getting in the way of their own happiness. There's no reason for Kitty not to speak up when Langley first gets called on the carpet by her family. The solution that was obvious to this reader, which is what's decided at the book's end, never occurs to her until she and Georgiana finally confer. Basically, this book flips back and forth between Langley and Kitty, describing the two would-be lovers wallowing in their misery at being apart until things are finally set to rights.
The story is as sweet and well-written as Ms. Brown's books always are. If you have enjoyed the previous books in Ms. Brown's Marrying Elizabeth series, you'll probably find this equally delightful. I definitely would not recommend reading this as a stand-alone, since their tender feelings for each other develop in the previous book, as does the passionate kiss that sets things up here. As for me, I couldn't get past being annoyed with the whole premise when it emerged in the first few pages. The whole problem is so easily avoided - around page 3 - but, of course, that would make for a very short book.
I received an ARC from the author with no promise of a review, favorable or otherwise
Book 5 in the ‘Marrying Elizabeth’ series: rating: clean: this review may contain spoilers.
Time frame: “This takes place the day after Mary and Wes’s wedding and about a month before chapter one.” We start out with a major misunderstanding [there always is with these young girls], Kitty had refused Mr. Langley. Quote from the book: “It was true. She had refused Mr. Langley, but not permanently. She had only meant it for a time. However, she had never been able to share that bit of information with him before he had rejected her.”
That was it in a nutshell. La! To be young, in love, and broken-hearted. That was Kitty while Georgiana felt like the misunderstanding was all her fault. I love these girls but they sort of got on my nerves with their angst. I suppose I was ready for the series to be OVER. I wanted to rush to their HEA but we had to get through a bit of misunderstanding and lover’s angst before that could happen. This was a delightful series and although Brown did a great job linking this story with the other books in the series, I do not recommend neglecting to read them. They are the foundation on which this book stands. The whole series is such a delight.
4-27-20 I volunteered to read an ARC of this story with no expectations of a review positive or otherwise. I have enjoyed this series so much that I have purchased all the books for my personal library. I highly recommend this series for a fun different take on the Bennet family.
Sweet story! Riddled with misunderstandings, and with at least one interesting new original character. I have found this complete series very entertaining and interesting, as well as wonderfully written.
Book 5 of Marrying Elizabeth series A good series focusing on the women of Pride and Prejudice, in this case, Kitty Bennet and her journey to betrothal. If you’re following the books, this is the shortest so far. Not quite as good as the other books, it still has its charming moments. Enjoyable!
Another wonderful book in the Marrying Elizabeth series. I thoroughly enjoyed it as always. Leenie Brown's books are a sweet treat when you are having a bad day.
This is Book #5 in the 'Marrying Elizabeth' series. I highly recommend you start at the beginning for the development of the series runs throughout and key elements will be missed if you do not...especially with Kitty's story.
"I am not marrying him." (quote from the book)
This is a sweet, gentle read with the appearance of angst. Kitty Bennet and Lorcan Langley were caught in a passionate embrace ('Persuading Miss Mary Book #4). Each are now refusing to marry the other. With time apart, how are each dealing with the loss of the other? What happens when they are forced to be in each other's presence again?
"Not an area of his life had not been coloured by the dark hues of sorrow after their parting." (quote from the book)
I love stories that develop the secondary characters of Pride & Prejudice. However, I was hoping for just a bit more depth with Kitty's development. I felt it only touched the surface. This is a shorter story, more of a novella, that had me wishing for more. I will say that Ms Brown has written one of favourite Kitty stories in "His Inconvenient Choice" (book 3 of the Choices series).
Kitty Bennet gets her happily ever after in this novella. It’s a quick, easy read. I’ve enjoyed this series, especially the changes to Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. I also liked Georgiana’s friendship with Kitty in this book which ends with a nice set up for the next book Protecting Miss Darcy. This series should probably be read in order so that all of the new characters (and matches) are familiar.
I received a complimentary ebook from the author. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.
Kitty's story actually begins in the previous book, Persuading Miss Mary - the series really needs to be read in order, since each book starts the plot of the next. Lorcan is caught kissing Kitty at Mary and Wes's wedding, but she says she doesn't want to marry him. She is actually in love with him, but has promised Georgina Darcy that Kitty will stay with her to help her get through her first season. Of course she doesn't mention that. So Lorcan, thinking that she really doesn't want to marry him, says he won't marry her, thus giving her her apparent wish, even though he wants to. This misunderstanding prevails through much of the book until they finally sort it out. I didn't like it as much as the previous four books - there wasn't a lot of development, and the misunderstanding got a little silly after a while. It does, however, add a couple characters and provide the set-up for the next book, Protecting Miss Darcy, so it wasn't a waste of time and was mildly enjoyable.
Lorcan Langley, on the morning of his friends' Lord Westonbury's wedding, compromised Kitty Bennet. But Kitty refused to marry him, stating 'I am not marrying him' missing off the important 'yet'. Therefore Langley refuses to marry her on the grounds that neither want the marriage, but he does, desperately. What a tangled affair. Can either admit their true feelings Another delightful and well-written story in this series. All the characters are a joy to read about. Though it would be best to read the series from the beginning to understand the characters, and all their stories.
Kitty refused Lorcan Langley at the end of the previous book, but wasn't able to tell him why, and now they are both miserable. It takes most of this book for it to come out that Kitty had promised to help Georgiana with her first season. Kitty finally consents to a betrothal, and Georgiana stipulates that Kitty's promise will be fulfilled early if Georgiana finds a suitor before the end of the season. Once again, works best if you have been following this series.
While I have been enjoying the "Marrying Elizabeth" series, I must say that I am a bit disappointed in this book. This book is much too short and gives us little development in the stories or the characters other that it let's us know why Kitty said she wouldn't marry him before. Also there are a few grammar errors and missing words that make a few passages difficult to read but not impossible.
Another wonderful book in this series this time about Kitty
Kitty is in town with her sister and hoping to do her first season with Georgians, but she has fallen in love with one of one Mary's husband's friends and he her but due to her promise she will not marry him till after the season.
Like all Leenie’s books, this is also a nice box of chocolats next to a cup of tea on a rainy day. I didn’t read the previous book before reading this ARC, but that wasn’t neccessary to understand the plot.
I am always wondering how a writer will shape her character and Leenie never fails to write exactly what someone wants to read when they open her books! Such a treat of a tale to have over tea!
I’m heart broken this great series is nearly finished. I’ve enjoyed it so much. I loved Kitty in this one and I’m trying not to dive into Georgiana’s story.
