If I had family like Gerald's.I wouldn't need enemies. Baring the sins of your parents is a burden in itself. Damn shame Gerald was shamed by a royal whore mother,and despised by a fat foolish King. Gerald atoned twice over for sins of his mother.

It took awhile
This took me awhile to get into. Gerard is a young but experience knight. He's sent by the Queen to solve a murder and protect the crowns' mine. There is more to this then meets the eye.
As confused Gerard is, I got as confused. Everyone seemed to be lying and those you think you can trust maybe you shouldn't. I did really like the conclusion.

Loved this book. I couldn't put it down once I started! Looking forward to more books from this author!

Lost interest about halfway in (46%). The book is really well written but the story is uninteresting. The main reason I could not go on was that there wasn't much to root for in the protagonist. It's mentioned he is a knight and has fought bravely for the kingdom but his heroic deeds are not described in detail. Instead, we see him thrown into a situation completely out of his depth and him getting outwitted at almost every turn. We don't see him getting any smarter or learning anything. Sometimes characters begin this way but it's hard to keep going when you're already halfway in and the only good thing you can say about the main character is that he tries to do the right and honorable (yet loses his temper, or does something even though he knows it's not a good idea, or does something while knowing he's being outplayed). Maybe there is growth later on, but I won't know because the plot intrigue isn't enough to keep me going either. It was too hard not to think about whitewalkers while reading it.
