Do you want to lick the mystery flavor?

Zoey

Purple hair and tattoos are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Zophia “Zoey” Walinski. While she may be her family’s black sheep, she knows how to make a mouth-watering bowl of Triple-Chocolate. With summer in full swing and her Imperial Beach ice cream shop busy, she’s not focused on anything besides scooping her way to success. Until someone who might be a poet, or maybe a pirate, walks into her shop. Someone who looks good enough to lick.

Joseph

Neither a poet nor a pirate, reserved English oceanographer Joseph George Ainsworth III is in SoCal only for the summer. Research has filled his life for years, leaving no time for dating. Seeking a place to escape the heat, he walks into a local ice cream parlor, but the woman behind the counter doesn’t help him cool off. Zoey is a lot more fun to study than his textbooks. He might be a virgin, but he’s certain she knows how to make waves.

If only the summer weren’t so short.

A high heat novella full of sunshine, whale song, and love!

Book One of the Sea Treats series. All books in the series can be read on their own.

Heartwarming romance

A fun, quick read at 80 pages. Heartwarming romance with a touch of steam. Well written characters and world building.

Here’s a line I loved …

‘Like the tide, she’d snuck in when he wasn’t looking and filled up his heart.’

I’ve only recently discovered this writer, but she’s fast becoming a favourite for quick, light-hearted, HEA reads. Cake gets 5 stars from me. Go buy this book.

This was a funny, cute, unexpected, short read. Love the heroine’s look and job, liked how the hero and heroine were different but melded together so well. It was fun all around.

Cake was a nice, light story with some definite steamy scenes and a lot more innuendo. I mean the novella’s first line is: “Do you want to lick the mystery flavor?”

It is a fun, quick read which will make you keep turning pages. Morse’s worldbuilding is excellent. The beaches of California, Pacific Ocean, and Zoey’s ice-cream shop are alluringly described. The overarching narrative is sensual, which is on point for the subject matter.

On the surface, the novella is opposites attract story. Zoey and Joseph are outwardly different, but inwardly they are both hardworking individuals with chemistry and sexual attraction to each other. Zoey is an outsider of her family and Joseph is trying to impress his family. Morse gave us a bit of background of the characters and their current dilemmas without bogging down the story. The steamy scenes were intense and loving. It feels like a modern romance where both characters and their needs are important. Zoey is coaching Joseph as in this area of life as he is the one who is less experienced.

For the most part, I enjoyed watching Zoey and Joseph’s relationship grow over the course of the novella. There was a scene I did not like because I don’t like when the character says one thing, but means another --especially since most of the book they are quite forthright! However, as it is standard romance trope, that is my personal preference. Even so, readers will root for Zoey and Joseph.

This isn’t my normal type of fiction, but I saw some reviews and thought it looked like a good beach-read-type book. It was.

“Cake” is marketed as a novella with hot-and-heavy sex scenes galore, and it does have a few. But mostly it’s a sweet love tale about two young, hardworking individuals who stumble into (and eventually onto) one another at an ice-cream parlor and find an immediate attraction.

The author does a good job of making Zoey’s ice-cream shop, as well as the ice cream sold, enticing, a place you’d want to visit in Southern California. Similarly, descriptions of the nearby sea and Zoey’s cramped apartment make the reader feel as if she’s living life on the West Coast.

Both Zoey and her eventual boyfriend, Joseph, have appealing qualities in different ways. She’s experienced life differently from Joseph, especially sexually, and has a pierced nose, tattoos, and a harder-edged mentality. Joseph has never had sex and is scholarly and privileged. He’s a sweet guy who was waiting his whole life to meet someone like Zoey, even if he didn’t know it. Like many in life, both of these attractive people are attracted to one another and want love.

The seemingly locked qualities of these two main characters are pierced in different ways throughout the novella, and I think “Cake” does a good job of showing that, beyond stereotypes, people are always a mixed bag of characteristics and emotions. It’s fun to see these two gauge each other and develop a serious relationship as the story unravels.

The sex scenes are intense but not overdone. Zoey coaches Joseph along every step of the way—even during their first kiss—and he seems to catch on quickly. Some portions of their conversations during these moments felt like how a mechanical how-to sex guide would read, but the communication between both characters was noteworthy. In fact, many couples could probably benefit from all this open bedroom talk.

All in all, this is the perfect type of escape-the-world book, a read that puts love first amid a few conflicts and makes you root for this coupling to work. You know it will, but you can’t take your eyes off the pages to see how things will play out.

Terrific California Love Story

This is a story taking place on the beautiful beaches of California (which the lead protagonist,Zoey, loves listening to from her window). Zoey puts all of life aside to pursue her dream of having a business and selling everybody’s favorite food - Ice Cream. And, she asks customers to delve into the mystery of her specially made flavors. The author's story is fun, sexy, easy to read and love scenes very well written, and very modern day love styles, which is admirable. I like the way the story follows Zoey’s movement and her mind’s appeal, constant questions to herself, about her possible lover, Joseph. Who, loves the sea and works on a boat and analyzes the oceanic flavors. I love the English language twists of ‘Bloke’ and ‘Bloody’, or ‘Flat’ (apartment). They seem to be the perfect match. But are they ? The story included some interesting characters:

Zoey: The inquisitive ice cream girl that will go the distance for any customer, and any love that may attract her during a visit of her place of business. And, like any girl, has a that ‘different’ hair color.
Cece: Coworker who constantly checks where Zoey’s mind is at work and the field of the opposite sex.
Kacper: The brother who works the high end spectrum of the Medical Field, to the north in Seattle. He keeps the mother proud with his career and also was a big brother that watched over the family with the father out of the picture.
Joseph: The sometimes, bumbling, shy, English gent who studies ocean life that Zoey puts an eye upon during the story.
Mom: Of course like any mother worries about her life (and which career is right) and love interests. And also calls her by another a pseudo name sometimes.
Ray Porter : Coworker of Joseph, Head of Research, and boat partner, who keeps Joseph on the edge as he tries to make some time with Zoey.

All in all, I loved this thrilling, very sexy, story of love near the sands and sea of the Ocean state.

A must read for all lovers of love, the ocean, sea life and beaches.

Zoey, with her tattoos and purple hair, is the black sheep of her well-to-do family. Rather than going into medicine, she chose to go into business for herself running an ice cream shop.

Joseph is forever working to prove himself and his worth to his distant family. His idea of rebellion is a summer on the pacific coast, researching the effects of petroleum pollution on the ocean.

Together, these two characters make an adorable couple in this sweet, sexy romance. Their story, while simple, proved to be just the story to slip into for a couple hours. I found both characters believable and relatable, with a cast of supporting characters that bring out their traits. The bleak moment legit brought a tear to my eyes, and the climax was perfect for this pair.

I would be interested to learn if the technical terminology and practices used to spice this piece were accurate, but I especially enjoyed how the author made ice cream technology not only relevant, but vital to scientific ocean research.

Nothing in this book stands out to me as being too much, awkward, or in need of improvement. I’m happy to give this novella 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to seeing more from this author.

Must read!!

This book had me at the first page. The author did an amazing job at setting the scene and not being over descriptive while also throwing in conversation right from the start, which is my go to for reads. The characters were likable from first meet and had relatable emotions and feeling about liking someone knew and not knowing how to approach it.

This book surprised me I really enjoyed it. I only wish it was longer but the length did work for the overall story which is huge.

Hannah Morse's Cake twisted two diverse and strong flavored personalities in one enjoyable book. I liked the natural flowing dialogue between Zoey and Joseph. The ocean and science used in the story took my attention and I quickly continued reading the story until the end. Zoey's charming wit and fresh outlook provided a humorous mood to the story. I enjoyed reading their relationship blossom, despite the doubts and ups and downs of a budding relationship. I had won this book in a contest and was not under any obligation to provide a review. Without reserve, I'd definitely read more of Morse's stories.

This is a great quick read and a fully developed stand alone story. Zoey is the black sheep of her family, opting for colored hair, tattoos & owning her own ice cream parlor instead of the doctorates the rest of her family have. Joseph is visiting for the summer & definitely did not expect to find himself attracted to Zoey. These two make for a great opposites attract story as they come together. Add in the male virgin trope & you have yourself an entertain

The perfect reading for the end of summer. Light and joy-inducing. You fall in love with the characters right from the beginning and the novel balances sweet and sensual beautifully. And the scenery? You can almost smell the ocean and feel its breeze on your face. The sequel cannot come soon enough.

Great for summer

This is lovely to read to transport you to the beach and seaside and imagine you're choosing an ice-cream flavour in Zoey's shop. The summer romance is fluffy and heart-warming.

Sweet read.

I did enjoy this book. It was sweet summer fling to love. While the story itself was cute, the little bit of drama in it felt forced to me.
All in all, it was sweet and I enjoyed it.
