Jas T. Ward’s Hostage is a thrill ride of adventure with a sexy, paranormal romance twist written in K. Bromberg’s The Everyday Heroes World project.

Evan O'Brien lived his immortal existence committed to a life of hardcore service to the secret war and army of The Grid. Zero time for love. That emotion complicated his control on all aspects of his life. He was determined his heart had no say so. And nothing or no one could change that.

Lily Devenmore spent her days working with kids and a job surrounded by books at the library. She lived loud and as bold as being born to the Grid allowed. As love found her sisters, Lily longed for it too. But she had yet to find a man who wanted her and not change her.

That all changed in one day—not only was she held hostage but Evan learned he held his heart from ransom far too long. Could they rescue each other? With help of some of your favorite characters from The Everyday Heroes World, they just might.

About the Author

Born and raised in Texas, Ward is a mixed bag of creativity spinning tales of paranormal, urban fantasy and even dark romance and horror; wrapped within a love story.

She’s been dared by her readers to write a few contemporary romances but even those reads have characters that are real and twisted by their creator. It did, however, spawn her romance tag line: Romance - The Ward Way.

Mother of three diverse and independent bold children, Ward prides herself for being the “Queen Niche’ Bitch” which is a handy way of saying she sucks writing to market.
But her readers don’t seem to mind.

This everyday hero happens to be immortal!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 👤👤👤

The setting: K. Brombergs Everyday Heroes World: First responders who work with the Malone Brothers. In this case the responders in the story work on the Grid. “A secret army organized centuries ago to fight the factors of Hell—demons and things of the best blockbuster creature features.”

The Hero: Evan O’Brien: Immortal commander on the Grid. He is second in command to Bounce (Leader of the Grid Army). Evan has movie star good looks (Lily thinks he looks like Ryan Reynolds). He is strong, tall and deadly but likes structure and organization.

The heroine: Lily Devenmore – Runs the Grid-affiliated Edge Academy for Gifted Children and reports to Evan O’Brien. Lily is a full figured woman with two sisters who are both thin and beautiful. Their parents were murdered in front of them as children. The Devenmore children were raised by Bounce after spending a few years in foster care.

The love story: Evan is too busy for a relationship since he is second in command of the Army on the Grid. Lily is tired of being overlooked by men because of her body. She has low self esteem, but is an otherwise loud and boisterous individual. She lives to give Evan grief.

When lily and two of her friends get taken hostage at a grocery story by two low level thugs, Evan is in charge of the situation. The grocery store in question happens to be above a grid substation which includes an armory. Evan and Lily find that their feelings for each other are deeper than either of them knew.

I don’t want to delve into details of what happens in the book, because I don’t want to give away spoilers, but there were things I liked and didn’t like about the book so I will explain a bit about that.
First of all, I liked the “Grid” storyline. I thought it was different than anything I read before and I also liked that other than the background, most of the story was with “real” world people and situations. By that I mean they weren’t fighting demons or other monsters, just normal criminals.

I did at some points feel that I was missing things when other people or situations were referred to that most likely happened in prior books. Though the author did try to put in enough details, I still at times felt a bit lost since I hadn’t read any other books set in this world.

The other main thing that I disliked was Lily. She had terribly low self esteem because of her weight and her weight issue came up over and over again and I really hate that. She says she is fine with her looks but obviously she is far from it and it is on her mind 24/7. It is one thing to have a curvy girl as the lead, but another to have her so down on herself and on men who can’t accept her size. I don’t like reading about that. Aside from that, I liked the romance and the hostage storylines!

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

This book was an quirky take on the Everyday world. In this world, there are the Grid which seem to be like mash up of a few paranormal creature given the abilities of the hero. The hero Evan is immortal and his life revolves around the army he manages .

He doesn't have time for anything else but there is one person who gets under his skin. The heroine Lilly who works for the Grid ,running the local school. She is by the book and that means annoying Evan when he asks for her paperwork.

Their interactions are their basis for the relationship and the whole story which plays out fast. The gist of the romantic lives is that Lily wishes for a man and Evan believes he has no time. Their relationship is fast and heats up when a situation unfolds which is basically can be guessed as you know the title is alluding to it.
Hostage which leads to Lily and Evan being forced to work from different angles to solve this situation which isn’t easy. The hostage situation plays out like a real life situation there is plenty of reactions and actions from different characters involved in the situation which was interesting and brought the book to life. It does drag out in order to give this relationship some momentum. The hostage situation is told over a few chapters so that Lily and Evan get to spend some time together and learn about Evan's humble beginnings.
Overall this book isn’t bad but it felt like it was missing things. There felt like I was an interloper to this Grid community. Like there was background missing as this romance didn’t felt like it was insta romance. It felt it had been building up and then it was forced to go fast when this situation played out. It’s an interesting concept that need a little more time to work out it’s kinks.

Evan works as second in command for the secret army The Grid. He’s good at his job, he works long and demanding hours so he doesn’t have time to be social, love and friendships take a back seat.
But all that changes when a hold up goes wrong and Lily is held hostage.
He has to face the fact that he likes her! Where that came from is anyone’s guess.
Well no, actually that’s a lie, Evan knows exactly where that thought came from. Seems like someone has a secret thing for Lily. And he’s had it for a while.....
Lily works in a private school teaching first graders. She also works in the local library
Lily has two sisters Emma and Rose, they both work for The Grid also. Lily and her sisters lost both their parents and their brother to the “cause” protecting civilians from the demons that hunt them.
Love isn’t high on her list of things to do, being in love hurt, so not for Lily thank you.
This book was so much fun to read. Set in a world where The grid is a secret army organised to fight demons and the things that creep out of hell!!!
Organised centuries ago, and here is the thing I found the most original, the good guys were all once bad guys! Earning a shot at redemption, if they pass, they get too live an immortal life on earth (still working for the grid I wasn’t sure on that part)
This book is part of a series. (The Everyday Hero’s World) its a little confusing finding the series.
I haven’t read any of the others, I don’t think your missing out on anything. They are connected in some way, but as they are written by different authors, it’s safe to say they don't need to be read in order.
But the author also has a world for these characters (and I may go and have a look) think there might be a spin off as well!
Evan and Lily constantly bang heads, she’s too loud and in your face. Evan is a stickler for rules and paperwork, so you do have to wonder how they come together?!
Really well thought out and written. Very descriptive, hilarious in parts (I did like Lily’s attitude) she always had a comeback or put down.
I really liked Lily, except for her lack of self esteem, she was a pretty funny woman. Fiery and passionate, loyal to her family and close friends, but with a side that makes you want to cuddle her up close and fight in her corner. Watching her parents die couldn’t have been easy, watching her sisters gets all the attention from boys had to be hard, but Lily is a fighter, she’s come to terms with who she is, except when Evan tells her how sexy she is, it’s hard to believe him.
Evan is a character I’d like to know more about. Centuries old, a mob bosses enforcer, he had the chance to redeem himself and took it. With fangs and a tendency to go crispy in the sun, you’d think they were vampires! Nope! According to Evan not vampires, they just share a few of the sane characteristics (think it’s the fact they’ve come from hell)
I get the impression he can’t take time off, is it to atone for his past? He feels he has to be in control of everything.
The chemistry once lit between these two was explosive.
Evan started the ball rolling when they were trapped in the bunker, he told Lily exactly how he felt about her.
So how does a workaholic commander keep the loud and brash librarian/schoolteacher? Because trying to convince Lily he wants something more than a one night stand is going to be an uphill battle.
🦋 I received this book for an honest review and all thoughts are my own

Bless me fellow readers for I have sinned *hangs head*. I must confess the most shameful of secrets *blanches*. Not only have I never read any of the EH series, I’ve also never picked up a Jas T. Ward book before. A fact which fills this PNR girl with the utmost embarrassment *palms face*.

*holds hand up*

I hear you all loud and clear, but never fear *wags finger*, I have been berating myself enough for all of you.

My book spidey senses were on high alert reading the blurb for Hostage. The lure of a PNR story set in the contemporary series world of EH was too enticing to pass up!

And, OMG, I fudging loved everything about this story. Drama, suspense, tension *whistle-winks* (it’s a thing – trust me!), a quirky heroine and drool-worthy Hero... Plus *zooms in for close-up* we have story world lore, peeps!

*jumps up and down*

*catches you watching*

*coughs*

*straightens clothes*

Apologies, but nothing pushes this Book Geek’s buttons more than when an author creates a world with its own lore. I instantly need to know EVERYTHING and want to immerse myself in this new world. So, guess what? I already have two books from The Grid series on my kindle (other ereaders are available) ready to go!

Also...

*whispers* I have to make another admission...

I fangirled *palms face* – yup, I sent the author an ‘I LOVE THIS STORY AND YOU ARE AMAZING!’ message. *shrugs* It’s not my fault. Lily and Evan (that backstory? whoa!) are entirely at fault for being so enthralling. Can you imagine the book talk you could have with Lily? Never mind the stories that Evan could tell. (That’s if you can concentrate enough not to be distracted by all that hotness! *snorts*)

For me, Hostage was the perfect PNR/contemporary hybrid. I can’t wait to read more from both worlds!

A short paranormal read in the Everyday Heroes world that made me instantly miss paranormal romances.

Evan O' Brien and Lily Devenmore do not get a long. She thinks he is too rigid and needs to let loose and loves to annoy him. After Lily gets involved in an unfortunate incident things instantly change. Evan comes to Lily's rescue putting them in forced proximity together. Their sexual chemistry that has been slowly simmering is ignited and the flame cannot be put out. Boundaries are crossed and there is no going back.

Lily has many insecurities that although she believes she has conquered them, resurfaces. She tries to move past them and Evan shows her that she is perfect how she is. Evan on the other hand has not dealt with his past issues and that makes it difficult for them to move forward. He has been torturing himself which breaks Lily's heart. They both have to take a risk anf conquer their fears in order to be happy together.

There isn't much I can say about the book because I honestly did not think it would be such a quick read. I wanted there to be more. I was a bit lost due to the fact that I haven't read any of the other interconnected books regarding The Grid. I also was expecting more from the sex scenes. I expected there to be more descriptive scenes. The heat was burning then it just fizzled out.

I would recommend you read the other books in the Grid series so you won't be as lost as me and have a better understanding regarding the characters and plot.

I don't usually read paranormal books, but based on the blurb i was definitely intrigued and decided to give this book a try, and I was very pleasantly surprised thay this wasn't your normal paranormal romance. Yes, there is a paranormal side, but that's not the main focus. I truly liked the way our author cultivated the idea of the grid -- that was something that I've never read before and I was truly invested in that part.. But I just didn't believe in the romance.

So Lily is a curvy gal, who I wanted to like so badly (especially since I'm so vocal about demanding curvy/normal sized women in my romances) but she was just so down on herself. As a curvy gal myself, I get the insecurities, I truly do, but it was like she wanted to be this badass woman who knew how beautiful she was, and then all of a sudden would become so self conscious in the matter of minutes. Her back and forth just gave me whiplash, and above all of that, I just didn't feel the connection between her and Evan.

I give props to the author for trying something new, and I was really interested in most of the storyline, but the romance just felt so forced to me.

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions.**

Evan holds a powerful position within The Grid, and he is solely focused on helping others to make up for the mistake he made in a previous life. He keeps his personal interactions with women brief and thrives on order within their chaotic world which makes his business relationship with Lily more confrontational than friendly.

Lily works for the school and although she is attracted to Evan she also believes that he would never be interested in someone like her. Her romantic past has shown her that she doesn’t fit the ideal that men are looking for but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy annoying him at every chance she gets.

When Lily becomes a hostage in a dangerous situation it is Evan who comes to her rescue. As they spend time together it forces them to acknowledge their true feelings for each other but once the danger ends will their time together be nothing but a fling or the beginning of forever? This is the first story I have read by this author but I would be interested in reading more of her stories set in this world.

Hostage was really an original read as it had a paranormal twist to The Everyday Heroes World. Evan is an immortal commander for The Grid. The Grid is the centuries old secret army to fight the factors of hell. I mean doesn't that sound awesome?! It was & I couldn't get enough of The Grid. Lily runs the Grid-affiliated Edge Academy for Gifted Children, and it's Evan who she reports to. She's also a curvy woman who has some big time insecurities. Like I'm saying that she was too down on herself in my eyes, and yeah, I really understand as I battle my weight as well, but still, it was too much in my opinion. Anyway, things take a turn when Lily is taken hostage and Evan is in charge of getting her back. They definitely had some fun interaction with sparks flying, but again, that whole insecurity issue that was driving her life tended to get involved. I don't want to say anymore because this is only my opinion, and other than a few things, it was an amazingly original read that you need to hit those one click buttons to decide for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is my first time reading a book in The Everyday Heroes World and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was a paranormal romance- like WHAT?!! Don't get me wrong, I love paranormal romances, just wasn't really expecting it, I just liked the opposites attract theme from the blurb!

So not only am I new to this world, but I am also new to this author, but I totally dug the book and the story! I am not really a fan of 3rd person stories either but the characters were vibrant and stand out in Hostage.

It was definitely an opposites attract and it was almost drastically different in the beginning, but then when everything clicks it is like YESSSSS! The story was interesting and I dug the book and the world! All in all I give this 4 outta 5 stars and will definitely check out more from the author and this REALLY interesting world!

PS: Thank you to Jas T. Ward and Grey's Promotion for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

Hostage is a paranormal romance that's definitely different than any of the other Everyday Heroes World series books.

Evan and Lily, both members of the Grid find themselves dealing with a lot as they also work out their feelings for each other. I liked getting to try something new as I usually read contemporary romance. While I enjoyed the unique story and characters, I do think I would have liked it a bit more if I had read other books set in this world from the author's Grid series first.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

I love a paranormal twist on an already established non-paranormal world. This author comes with a gripping tale of opposites attract. Lily and Evan are fractured and they keep fighting their attraction for each other. Both full of self doubt can they heal each other?
I love the witty banter between the characters and the steamy scenes. I can’t wait for another story by this author!!

This paranormal romance takes me to a new world unlike what I've read before and I truly enjoyed it. The romance has 2 people that are fighting their attraction because of issues they each have. Will they make it thru the hostage crisis only to walk away from each other? Interesting read. I volunteered an honest opinion for this book.

What a great read. I am completely new to Jas T Ward, but after reading this I sought out and bought more titles. I enjoyed the premise, the characters were fun, the dialogue witty and good to read and the hot scenes were just that 🔥! Evan and Lily are filled with self doubt based on their pasts, but they are dynamite together! A quick, very satisfying read which has brought a new author and a new world into my life! 💖💖💖💖💖

So I didn’t read any blurbs before opening this book, so imagine my surprise when I found out it was a paranormal story! Not my usual favorite but this was a well written story about two fractured people.

This story has pretty much everything plus fangs ! It was an interesting world to visit, Lily and Evan were perfect for each other, they just needed to get out of each other’s way. Once they did it was as if the stars aligned and all was right in the Grid.

I do think I would have liked to read her other “grid” books before this one so I could have felt more of a connection with all the characters but it was still a great story. So even if paranormal isn’t your thing give this one a chance, you won’t be disappointed!

Lily Devenmore has a way with children. She does with adults too but there’s one who she loves to push his buttons. Evan O’Brien believes in obeying the rules. He was my surprise in this story.

Lily is a woman who some can relate to. She’s not someone you can compare to a model. She’s just an average woman who may share some thoughts that you may have. Some women just think that they’re not going to find the type of love that you can find within a book. Evan is not your average man but not one that can be related to.

Our author is very good at blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. Everything she wrote seems possible. Some of the facts are based on what could actually happen but the other part shows that you just might not know everything about someone. We only know what a person is willing to share. No two people are going to look at this the same way. Some may look at the positive things our characters bring to this story. Some my pick up on the negative. I tend to always look for the silver lining.

This is a book based on a world started by another author. In order to enjoy this story, you do not need to have any experience with that world. This stands on its own merits. If you’ve not read any of this author’s other work than this is a great introduction. You may also want to see what the other authors have written as a contribution to a new series.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Hostage is a quick read that takes place in K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes world. It’s not necessary to have read them, but if you have it’s like revisiting some old friends. It also ties in with the author’s Grid series. I haven’t read any of the Grid series before this, and while it wasn’t necessary, I do think it would have added to the enjoyment for me. So many of the characters are from that series, and previous events are alluded to quite often.
I liked Lily and Evan. They like to fight flirt, and that kind of tension is always fun. I think they have good chemistry and there was a steamy scene I really enjoyed. I enjoyed this world of the Grid, it’s a really cool premise I would like to explore in the other books of the series.
I would have liked to see more time devoted to their lives before the main event, to learn more about their history together. Lily is a curvy gal, but there was a lot of time spent on her being mean to herself and dragging the men she’s been with or interested in for not accepting her as she is. I understand the feelings behind that, but I really would have loved to see more growth for her and her relationship with her body.
On the whole, I enjoyed it and would read more from the author.

Hostage by Has T. Ward is set in K. Bromberg's Everyday Heroes World and this novel is not one to miss! Seriously, you need to grab it and read it! I was sucked in from the start and was on the edge of my seat (sometimes literally but usually figuratively) as the story progressed, drawing me in ever deeper, getting me to fall more and love with all of the characters.

Lily is loud and brash and unabashedly who she is proudly and to the core and it is so refreshing to read even as she too struggles with plenty of inner voices and demons. And then there's Evan. Holy moly but he sounds like a dreamboat! A hunk of a man that's stuck in the past and having a bit of trouble letting go and moving on.

A combustible situation has them spending some time together, some hard and harsh truths being revealed, and it's emotional to read, even as it makes you love them more.

If you're ready for a story with a delightful paranormal bent to it, great sass and sarcasm delivered on the regular, and a love story that'll make you smile, look no further than Hostage! We can all be held hostage in numerous ways, but learning to breathe, to battle for the fresh air, it's always worth it!

"If you believe you arent beautiful, let me know. All you have to do is see yourself through my eyes... As we have established. I am not blind. My love isn't either. It sees all of you...every single part. The inside you try to hide. The outside you use to cover it up. The vulnerable and the scared. The weak and the strong. And my soul isn't deaf. It can hear the pureness of yours, even when your words and bravado try to shelter its song."

Evan and Lily are both scarred from their pasts, and it has a serious impact on their present lives. Their chemistry is off the charts from the very beginning.

This isn't the type of book i normally read, so i was a little skeptical going in, but i was pleasently surprised. There were some parts that felt like they dragged on forever, and other parts that seemed rushed. Overall though, I really enjoyed the story.

From the first time reading the description, this is one story that I wanted to read as it is a pnr and it introduced me to a new author writing in K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes World. Lily is a full-figured woman with a job that she enjoys, especially when it comes to dealing with “her children” as a school administrator. Another job perk is her ability to needle Evan, the second in command at the Grid and a stickler for the rules and order. Each one has issues with their respective pasts and when they become involved in a hostage situation, their thin line of love/hate begins to shift. This is one slow read that took some time to get into and feel for the characters. As the story progressed, the romance between the two felt a bit forced. Overall, it is an interesting storyline with wit and will put a smile on your face. I volunteered to read a copy of this book.

I will say this I never read the blurb to this book I just signed up because I love to read. And holy crap I'm not usually one for paranormal as sorts, but I have start to broaden my horizons with my reading. This book by Jas T. Ward blew me away I have never read her before but it won't be the last time. Evan has lived many lives and now he lives for The Grid trying to protect all those involved in the Grid both mortal and immortal. Lily is a pain in his butt smart mouth mortal. She's also amazing and I loved her mouth. Her whole attitude just made you feel welcome. These two but head likes crazy, but when Lily is in trouble it's Evan who will risk his life literally to save her. But sometimes men are dumb. Can Evan get his head out of his butt to see what's right in front of him before it's to late?

Lily enjoys her verbal sparring with Evan & Evan can’t get over how gorgeous she is but he is unwilling to make time for a relationship with his haunted past. When Lily gets taken hostage along with a few others, Evan vows to be the one to go in to help the hostages escape. The rescue attempt does not go as planned and Lily winds up trapped alone with Evan underground. As Evan works to calm Lily’s fears, they both reveal their feelings for each other and things heat up as they explore their primal desire for one another. But once they get out, will Evan & Lily be able to overcome their past traumas or is their relationship over before it really began?

When I saw the option to read this book I jumped at it. This book was more than I could have asked for. Set in the Everyday Heros world this paranormal book was more than I could have hoped for. I'm very particular about my paranormal romance, but Jas T. Ward knocked this book out of the park. While this book was PNR it was also contemporary. I loved everything about this hybrid book.

Lily and Evan felt so real. I loved the backstory. Love was not high on Lily's list. But who could deny the chemistry between Evan and Lily. Evan's had a thing for Lily for a while.

I can't say enough how much I loved getting lost in this book. I love the idea behind this story as well as the characters. I wasn't sure that this was going to work in The Everyday Heros World, but this book just does.

If you like an alpha hero, Evan is for you! Add in the fact that this is a paranormal and I was here for it.

It took me a little bit to get into this book even though I loved Lily and her sass and Evan and his alpha-ness. I was a huge fan of Lily from the beginning, her attitude LEAPS off the page and she LIVES to sass Evan. And I loved me some Evan! Definitely a great character and built to be a book boyfriend, with his alpha-ness, his tormented soul, his principles. Just everything.

This is totally the book to read if you like alphas, paranormal, sassy heroines and a good storyline!

A everyday heroes story with a bit of a paranormal twist. Evan is an immortal who works for an The Grid a secret service that fight the paranormal. Lily is a teacher who works for the same company and lives to annoy Evan. During a hostage situation and a rescue mission has these two held up in a bunker and faced with feelings they have been suppressing for each other. An enjoyable quick read as these two struggle with their feelings, dealing with letting go of the past and other struggles. Love the banter between these two just wished there was more.

Loooooooooook. This had a somewhat promising plot with action and intrigue. But the overall story went on too long and it's not that long to begin with.....
However, my big problem was the romance.
One of the worst things I've ever read was this line from the Hero:

I'm sorry but once I read that it was just over for me. Down from a 2.5 to a 1-star...........

Hostage is one of the books in the Everyday Hero World and it was my first Jas T Ward novel. This was an interesting story with a slight paranormal twist and I enjoyed it. I loved the introduction to this new world the author created and it made me interesting in checking out the other books in the Grid series. Our main characters were flawed with their own issues but Evan and Lily had some witty dialogue and their steamy scenes were hott. I enjoyed the story and would recommend it to romance lovers looking for a light fun read.

I love the twists here and how the story has the paranormal aspect in it as well. the world-building is amazing and I found myself wanting to read more. Evan and Lily have amazing chemistry and try and fight their attraction to each other. Lily has lots of inner self doubt however and I had a hard time connecting to her when she would doubt herself but then say she was fine. Overall, I really enjoyed it and makes me want to read more of The Grid.
