The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement is Destroying America

Rate this book
David Horowitz has been the bête noire of the Left for decades on account of his courageous revelations of their aims and tactics, and now he sounds the alarm: the barbarians are already inside the gates.

Horowitz lays out how we have ended up in the worst national crisis since the Civil War. He details:

• The Left’s embrace of Critical Race Theory and Cultural Marxism—the underpinnings of their totalitarian ideology

• The decades-long infiltration of our education system by ideologies hostile to America, our institutions, and our freedom

• Why the Obama administration marked a point of no return in the division of America into two irreconcilable political factions

• The Democrats’ unprincipled campaign to destroy a duly elected U.S. president

• Their political exploitation of the coronavirus pandemic

• Their complicity in the riots of the summer of 2020, which left twenty-five dead, injured two thousand police officers, caused billions of dollars in property damage, and revealed the fragility of our civic order.

How did we get here? Civil discourse is laced with catch phrases and our social media feeds are overpopulated with clickbait. This new release by conservative thinker David Horowitz helps untangle the conflicts of the present by revisiting our past. Here is an interesting fact I learned from this book: the term 'sexism' and I are the same age. It has been just 56 years since that term was coined by sixties radicals. Now it is an commonplace insult often used to shut down dialogue. Speaking of shutting down dialogue, my next read is going to be The Tyranny of Big Tech.If you feel like you are drowning in a sea of leftist ideas, grab this book. David Horowitz has thrown us a life preserver.

Every American should read this book. Especially the first two chapters. That’s exactly what is being done. The process is more than 1/2 accomplished. Criminals reign in vast city areas already. Applied identity politics is Marxist Cultural prime. Only class or divided group designation matter to “justice”. It is the antithesis of original American documentation and definition of the individual being entity key. Defined by themselves and their individual human rights listed. Superb defining here with immense particular exact sourcing and research. The 1 star ratings did not read this book or are completely propagandized to believe only groups matter. Almost 50 executive orders does not a viable republic make. Not for long. And not with criminals in full sway maiming, looting, destroying. Or with hatred fully exposed as some sort of “good” reaction. The most depressing and most accurate book both for what I see happening daily in places that were lawful, peaceful and had huge good intent for decades. That’s gone.

How this has been accomplished step by step is not just any opinion but history specified. It will become stratified next. Elites with politico power being a class of privilege with exceptions and most of the others in peasant level permissions. Those exact outcomes are already evident. But will progress to the labeled oppressor groups being curtailed in consequence. Not by individual onus or effort or outcome short term- but by their identity class designation.

His history of all the Marxist originators of Identity Politics at University of Chicago is 6 stars. And completely true.

I borrowed this book from the local library to better understand the underlying premise of the conservative right. Reading the book was very difficult because Horowitz only talks in traditional generalizations without real substance. The book ignores the totals commitment of the right to undermine Obama for 8 years. Individual rights is important in our country until they undermine the community… this is something that Horowitz seems to ignore. Those supporting right wing politicians will rate the book high as it reinforced what they want to hear.

Well written and supported by fact. So, we should be very worried.

A must read for anyone who wonders how we as a nation have arrived at this unsupportable juncture. Where true is false, right is wrong, and individuals who support our republican form of government and the Constitution are seen as racists and bigots. The left is very, very proficient at name calling. Despite what some reviewers have said, The Enemy Within is well-researched, well-presented, and honest.

I consider myself to be a right-leaning moderate politically. I picked up this book because, like a majority of Americans, I am tired of political correctness that has become woke and the influence of the progressive left on both our media and educational institutions. Horowitz makes many arguments that rang true to me. Unfortunately, in making them, he commits most of the sins of which he accuses those on the left. He cherry-picks his facts, categorizes people and organizations, and labels them in the most negative terms. In short, this monologue is too vitriolic to accept at face value. I hope to find a better path forward.

Wikipedia defines totalitarian as “…a concept used in academia and in politics to describe a form of government and political system that prohibits all opposition parties, outlaws individual opposition to the state and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control over public and private life.” While America is not all the way down the road on the definition, there are glaring similarities between Wikipedia’s definition and events taking place in our country today.

Author David Horowitz addresses the political movement that has been present for years (even decades in some areas) and outlines the imminent dangers. While I was familiar with many of the incidents and people he talks of, it is always good to be reminded of what you know as well as gain new knowledge. One of the most interesting things I learned was that a person can say just about anything about another person, even if it is a brazen lie, and the courts have decided that this is difficult to be termed as defamation of character or slander as the courts have ruled that this is okay because it is freedom of speech. I thought this was important because untruths are spoken daily, repeated by others as fact, and the next thing you know, whatever was said is regarded as gospel and written in stone.

I usually prefer to read a book where the name-calling is at a minimum or non-existent. However, the people featured on the book cover (and many others) manage to get my blood moving, and I am sure the same happened to the author many times while writing this book. Thus, liberals who disagree with the premise of this book may get hung up on the name-calling rather than focus on the facts. Mr. Horowitz presents enough footnotes and links to keep the most diligent doubter busy for at least a year. If you disagree with his words, check out the NOTES section and read the facts as presented by the original sources, many of them from places that could hardly be considered conservative. A must-read for everyone. Five stars.

David Horowitz is one of the cleanest writers and clearest thinkers about contemporary politics. Like me, he is what used to be called a neo-con, that is, someone with the wherewithal to escape the leftist thought-plantation. There is truth in Sun Tzu’s saying to “know your enemy” and it clearly helps if you were once one of the opposing team.

Horowitz’s latest clarion call, The Enemy Within, is a stem-winder. His first epigraph quotes Lincoln: “As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” His thesis is that the U.S. – and by extension the West – is committing suicide due to leftist authoritarianism that has manifested itself so clearly in recent years.

His dedication is to the righteous victims of the leftist machine, and provides a good summary of the most egregious examples and forms of leftist tyranny: to “inner-city kids” trapped in failed public schools; to “inner-city inhabitants” at the mercy of Democrat justice-free zones; to the “innocent victims of criminal aliens” due to the “sabotage of America’s borders”: to “Europeans and Asian-Americans” denied rights by the systematic racism of “woke” institutions; to the lifework of “business entrepreneurs and employees” destroyed by the “Democrats’s dictatorial shut-down orders; and to “American patriots betrayed by the Democrats’ contempt for America’s constitutional order and shameless support for its foreign enemies – Islamic jahadists, China, and Iran.”

The book was published too early, in 2021, to also be dedicated to all lower- and middle-class Americans whose livelihoods are being crippled by high inflation brought on by the usual leftist incompetence and child-like impulse to destroy all that they touch.

This set of grievances, as profound if not more troubling than those listed by the Declaration of Independence against British tyranny, will cause the largest electoral shift in history in the coming November elections – that is, if the Democrats’ massive retail election steal that was so effective in the 2020 election doesn’t erase it. If a modicum of election integrity can be maintained, the Democrat party is facing extinction.

On the first page of Horowitz’s cogent arguments he declares that “Americans are more divided today than at any time since the Civil War” and that the “two parties are now guided by outlooks so different that their supporters seem to inhabit alternate universes.” The proximate cause was that “for four years slander has been a weapon of first resort for the ‘Resistance’ to President Trump.” Worse,

The effect of the anti-Trump obsession and the strategy of obstruction has been to deepen conflicts and make them all but unresolvable. [p.3]

Horowitz exposes the anti-American fervor animating the New Left by continuing,

Another casualty of the Democrats’ ‘Resistance’ had been patriotic loyalty, which in now suspect as loyalty to ‘white nationalism’ and ‘white supremacy.’” [p.4]

What could have caused a once patriotic party to flirt with nihilism and annihilation in the relentless pursuit of power?

The source of these divisions is a reactionary ideology usually referred to as “Identity Politics,” which has engulfed the Democrat Party and undermines its liberal instincts. It is an ideology that is racial and collectivist, that privileges groups over individuals and demonizes those who fall on the wrong side of its social equations. [p.4]

In other words: the ideology of cancel culture that has run amok and is silencing all dissent. Horowitz zeroes in on the philosophical basis of this totalitarian movement:

Identity Politics is often referred to as Political Correctness, but is is more accurately understood as Cultural Marxism – the idea that American society is characterized by oppressive hierarchies, and thus divided into warring races, genders, and classes. [p.4]

I quote at length Horowitz’s opening argument to show what a concise writer he is, marshaling his case one step at a time.

The last sentence of the first chapter’s opening argument reads:

It is this regressive attack on America’s fundamental principles by the Left that is the source of irreconcilable conflicts and ugly passions that are currently tearing the nation’s fabric apart, and that is the subject of this book. [p.10]

A few minor quibbles. Horowitz makes it sound as if by simply pulling the lever for a candidate with an R after his name will solve most everything. As the continued abject cowardice and cravenness of RINOs shows, the problem is not solely the Democrat party but the Uniparty, the fusion of the radicalized Democrats with establishment, globalist Republicans, who are more than happy to sell the country, its dreams and economic security to the highest bidder. If there is any hope for the nation’s recovery from tyrannical governance currently metastasizing, patriots must get heavily involved in primaries now, rejecting RINOs in favor of true America Firsters.

Business as usual will only send the country more speedily to destruction and perdition. Instead, the Uniparty must be put out of its misery.

Horowitz does not emphasize the seriousness of the spiritual battle we are in, most likely as his last book, “Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America” (and this written by a secular Jew!), thoroughly treats the subject. Clearly, our galloping cultural nihilism is the fruit of a secular-humanist, elitist and globalist cult which denies God or that our Creator should have any say in the conduct of human affairs.

In a nod to this tragic truth, Horowitz ends this latest tour-de-force with a coda titled “Love against Hate,” which he borrows from the recovering-journalist Daniel Greenfield’s article “An Election between Love and Hate.” That election steal he correctly terms “the greatest political crime in the history of the country.” [p.200]

Think about it. The vast majority of America patriots, and a growing majority of all Americans, believe the 2020 election was influence by fraud and is illegitimate.

Yet while the entire Stasi-governmental infrastructure, plus the corrupted intelligence community, the treasonous Fourth Estate, our tech and indoctrination masters of Big Tech and Big Education, unite to destroy both the voice and livelihood of dissenters, the patriots themselves remain extraordinarily peaceful and patient, trusting in God and our fellow Americans. Truly, there is no better example of love of country and fellow man than their forbearance.

Horowitz’s ends on a sobering note:

In sum, everything Democrats and their allies did with the power they had won showed that their ultimate goal was not to replace or destroy one man in office, or to win one election, but to establish a one-party state. [p.201]

That is, if the country lets them or if their fellow-travelers don’t wake up in time and reverse themselves. Here’s to praying that they do.

The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement is Destroying America, David Horowitz, author; Rick Adamson, narrator

If you are a liberal, completely consumed with Trump Derangement Syndrome, unable to tolerate any other view but your own, do not even bother trying to read this book, even though it would probably be the first time your eyes were opened to another truth, another opinion that is valid, but hidden, because ignorance allows the more powerful to control the people. Horowitz, with a clear and concise message, puts all the misinformation sponsored by the left, every single incident, riot, rally, demonstration, etc., is dissected and analyzed to point out that the message from the left is often biased and untrue. He sends their lies out to the pasture where he buries them with facts that prove that their representation and harangues about social justice, are nothing more than racist tactics meant to divide us.

Michael Brown did not have his hands up. George Floyd was not a hero, he was a drug addict and violent criminal, Derek Chauvin was behaving in a lawful manner, and did not murder Floyd, drugs did. The truth has been withheld from the public, as the media and the Democrats have spread a false narrative to promote themselves, and as citizens rushed to judgment without adequate facts. Horowitz attacks and exposes every effort by the left to discredit the right and President Trump, their main target, in an effort to maintain their control by any means and prevent him from entering the White House ever again. That unjust and dishonest effort is still alive and well.

Horowitz is unafraid, and even attacks the last elections questionable results, explaining the lack of a legitimate investigation in laymen’s terms, easily understood and checked out for credibility. He points out that the left has often questioned election results, but still tarnished anyone on the right who dared question Biden’s number of votes. No real investigation of the corrupt election was allowed as fear dominated the atmosphere, and Democrats approved of lawlessness, even as late as the Roe V Wade decision when the left turned a blind eye to illegal demonstrations meant to influence the justice's decision as they had influenced the judges regarding the election’s investigation. Since they had succeeded so well in stopping that investigation, they had good reason to believe that they could also alter the SCOTUS decision by terrorizing the justices, their families and their neighbors. Horowitz compares the 20 months of rioting, looting and general destruction causing injury and death, instigated by BLM, which the Democrats supported and promoted, to the supposed insurrection on January 6th, which the Democrats decried. I believe he rightfully calls the 20 months far more of an insurrection. Anyone with a lick of intelligence should be aware that the election was corrupt, as unconstitutionally, states actually altered the rules to advantage the Democrats, counted votes in secret, multiple times, did not check for the validity of citizenship or legality and refused access to Republicans to prevent such corrupt behavior. He carefully exposes all of the manipulative and sometimes dishonest tactics the left has used to take control of the narrative, using the main street media, the social network platforms, and the cancel culture to promote only one message, theirs, and purge all others. They are creating a world eerily similar to that of Orwell’s “1984”, and we should be very afraid of what it means for our future.

Horowitz dissects Marxism as Identity Politics, exposes antisemitism and white activism for what it actually is, not as the child of the right, but actively existing on the left with its fascistic practices. He reminds us of what Madonna said about sometimes wishing to blow up the White House, he points out that the Women’s March was supported by Linda Sarsour, who wants to destroy Israel and supports Assata Shakur who is a convicted killer. He reveals the truth about Ferguson and the riots. He exposes the racism of Robin DiAngelo, anti-white Michael Dyson, and so many other America haters who support kneeling for the American flag, like Colin Kaepernick, BLM and CRT, those that promote concepts that are blatantly false and unjustified. Although they point fingers at others, they are the real racists according to him, and he proves his points admirably, in most cases. BLM supports Farrakhan, a “Jew hater”, condemns all cops as killers, supports flag burners, and haters of Israel, promotes anti-white rhetoric and riots as reparations. Yet Democrats support them.

As Horowitz analyzes all of the buzz words used by the left, and shows that they are the tools of the liberals to divide us, he makes their ultimate goal clear. They want a weaker America, they promote the dysfunctional, they do not promote a merit-based society, they simply want power, period, no matter how they achieve it. White supremacy is not owned by the right. However, identity politics is owned by the left. The left promotes class warfare, racism, socialism, cancel culture, censorship, promotes sedition, character assassination, organizations that cancel the speech of others, creates false ideas about insurrections, conducts corrupt elections, and hopes to promote a “new liberal world order” as Biden suggested, using their bully pulpit to prevent any other message from being heard, and by casting blame for their sins upon others.

There isn’t a single tactic used by the left that Horowitz does not dismantle brilliantly. If you open your eyes, unplug your ears, empty your mind of the hate you have been taught by the liberal educators, you will learn a lot about how you have been manipulated by a party that is not proud of its country, America, yet the place they decry, everyone else begs to enter, even risking their lives to do so. There must be a reason, don’t you think? This book is not for sissies. It is for those who love America first, who love America’s Constitution, who love the Judeo/Christian principles of life, who love a good and honest discussion of both sides of issues so that compromises can be reached. This book is for those who love Nora Zeale Hurston, not Ta-nehisi Coates, Robert Woodson Sr., not Robin DiAngelo, Alveda King, not Ibrahim Kendi, Thomas Sowell, not race-baiters like Joy Reid. This is a book for people who love America, love equality not CRT, capitalism and not socialism, who love neither identity politics nor racism, no matter where it lives. Insisting that all lives matter is not racist, the opposite is, if some do not matter as much as others, that is racist.

In between books classified as sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and mysteries, I like/feel obligated to read non-fiction current events books. The Enemy Within is such a one. The terror of Alien, a good Dean Koontz or Stephen King novel is nothing when compared with the self-centered drive for power and wealth that lead so many leaders/elected officials to form unconscionable liaisons with enemies of the U.S. to this misfortune of U.S. citizens and the Constitution. Read the summary then read the book. The book is @200 pages with @50 in notes and references. But, you will need to have a few good books nearby as diversion because you'll need to take a break from the realities presented.

Tiresome propaganda that even concludes with repeating The Big Lie, that the 2020 election was stolen, a claim that Trump’s own Attorney General debunked at the time.

Now that Trump ‘won’ in 2024; we are already seeing the lawlessness and incompetence which the voters rejected four years prior. Note this review was written in February 2025.

Politically I am independent, and usually down the middle. Calling all Democrats Marxists (done countless times in this book) is just as bad as calling Maga folks Nazi’s.

It’s time to revert battles in the political arena to the realm of ideas, on all sides.

In the meantime I’ll happily bring this tome to the next book burning!

Heartbreaking and infuriating Truth

This book covers so many aspects of the greatest fraud in American political history and fully 1/3 is , at the end of this work, exhaustive and thorough references and footnotes. The information is appallingly damning, detailing the origins of the treachery that was poured out upon the citizens of this country by power craving hoodlums in sheep's clothing. The saddest question is, now that they have pilfered our election process, do we have the integrity, grit and stamina to take it back?

It warms my heart to see Trumptards are still crying their bitter loser tears. I encourage the republipukes to continue making idiotic conspiracy books like this since it pushes more rational conservatives towards the democrats' side, especially now that their crybaby leader is dragged away from the Whitehouse.

Important, informative, well-researched book. The author was raised by Communist parents and spent many years as a leftist. He truly knows the “enemy” he is writing about: those who are working to destroy America as we know it. Recommended for those who love America and our freedoms and who want to know the actual facts of what’s happening in the USA (in contrast to the narrative promoted by the media).

Quotes:
“Identity politics is a totalitarian ideology that depicts all aspects of human activity- down to the use of pronouns- as political, therefore requiring management and control. It erases individuals by assigning them to categories that ignore their particular circumstances, achievements, failures, and choices. Individuals are judged first and foremost on the basis of their race, gender, and sexual orientation…
Modern progressivism, which embraces Cultural Marxism, is a reactionary movement whose goal is to return to the status societies of the pre-capitalist era- when individuals were born into an unalterable hierarchy ranging from peasant to aristocrat. This was the situation that existed before the revolutions of the eighteenth century created liberal democracies with their concept of individual freedom and their opportunities for upward mobility facilitated by market capitalism.” -p. 5

“The very idea that blacks are ‘marginalized’ is absurd… But skin color can hardly be an explanation for (poor blacks’) plight when the majority of black Americans are comfortably in the middle class and better off than the populations of any black-run society on earth.” -p. 7

“White Christian males were responsible for the first moral condemnation of slavery in world history.” -p. 7

“From the vantage of the black and Hispanic victims of criminals carrying illegal weapons, the ELIMINATION of ‘Stop and Frisk’ is actually racist… The effect of the Identity Politics creed is to remove all the complexities of the real world in favor of a policy that meets ideological criteria to satisfy progressive hostility to whites. It is proposed as a measure to protect minorities but actually results in adverse consequences for the minority victims of inner-city crime.” -p. 19

“By taking away the agency of individuals to determine the outcome of their lives, the Democrat platform turns people into puppets of social forces beyond their control, victims of ‘oppressors’ who must wait to be liberated by ‘social justice warriors’ and ultimately government DIKTAT. It is a malevolent vision that has been tested on a billion people under Communist regimes with catastrophic ‘results.’” -p. 28

Re: reparations: “Eighty percent of all Americans were descended from immigrants who reached America’s shores after the abolition of slavery, while many others were descended from white Americans who had laid down their lives to free the slaves.” -p. 35

“The repellant dismissal of all America’s progress towards equality and inclusion- arguably the greatest transformation of race relations ever recorded- is a general theme of the Democrat Party and the racist left.” -p. 37

Re: lynching: “About a third of lynching victims were white, and many of the victims had committed criminal acts and were targets of ‘frontier justice’ rather than racism.” -p. 37

“The nihilistic racism of the Black Lives Matter message is based on a demonstrably false premise-- that police have declared open season on black men. That premise is false not only because America’s police forces have long been racially integrated:...the proportion of blacks killed by police is directly related to the number of violent crimes committed by black males and thus likely proportional to the number of blacks involved in violent encounters with the law.” -p. 45

“The Black Lives Matter movement is not about particular injustices but about the alleged injustice of the American system, of capitalism, and of so-called ‘white supremacy’. Its mission is not to save black lives. The thousands of deaths from black-on-black homicides draw no attention and inspire no protests, nor do the deaths of black police officers on the integrated police forces Black Lives Matter activists attack. Their ferocious denunciations of slogans like ‘All Lives Matter’ and ‘Blue Lives Matter’ reveal the racist impetus behind their own agenda.” -pp. 43-4

“(Obama)’s support for a racist and violent vigilante group, his validation of its false version of reality and hostile attitude towards law enforcement, led predictably to more criminal violence… But like the lynch mobs they despised, Black Lives matters protesters were not interested in seeking remedies through the law. They had convinced themselves there was no such remedy and had been encouraged by the American president to take the battle to the enemy camp-- America’s racially integrated law enforcement agencies.” -p. 47

“Black Lives Matters leaders identified with Communist totalitarians and with Islamic imperialists and terrorists who were conducting a seventy-year genocidal aggression against the Jews. They had joined self-proclaimed enemies of the United States and its democratic ally Israel…
“The Black Lives Matter riots, which ironically destroyed numerous black communities, showed how the historic mistreatment of black Americans could be used to leverage a hatred of America- the very system that had freed black slaves and made America’s black citizenry the freest, richest, most privileged black population in the world.” -p. 53

“The only thing (Lindsay) Graham got wrong was calling Ford a victim. She was the aggressor: a cynical liar and character assassin. Graham’s misplaced sympathy was a genuflection to the feminist witch hunt that had made the whole travesty possible. It was the gentlemanly thing to do, but it didn’t reflect the reality of what this hateful woman had done. Christine Blasey Ford-- aided, abetted, and prodded by the Democrats-- was the perpetrator of a reprehensible crime against a good and decent man. It was also a crime against her country, as America would not be America without the equal treatment of all, male as well as female, or without the presumption of innocence, the right to cross-examine an accuser, and due process to protect the innocent.” -p. 74

“It was a powerful irony, since guilt by accusation and dispensing with due process have historically been core elements of the practice of lynching. Progressives’ hysteria about hierarchy and oppression has led them to embrace the very mob justice they claim to abhor. The disjunction between the Morality Play that framed Kavanaugh as a rapist and the reality that he was an innocent victim of slanderous, malicious, and unsubstantiated accusations, could not have been greater.” -p. 76

“The attacks on law enforcement have caused police to be less proactive in inner-city communities and thus have emboldened criminals who prey on the blacks who live there… ‘My entire argument about the necessity of lawful, proactive policing is based on the value of black lives.’” -Heather Macdonald, p. 77

“ (Democrats have) come to rely on name-calling and hate rather than reason and persuasion, and whose leaders characterize their opponents as ‘deplorables’ and ‘irredeemables’ and ‘white supremacists.’ A party that relies on moral indictments to advance its political agendas, and which elevates tribal groups over the individuals who compose them, is a totalitarian party in the making.” -p. 101

“The first target of the Ministry of Truth is memory, because remembrance of the past is an anchor in reality that will frustrate the state’s efforts to control its subjects’ minds. The ultimate purpose of turning truths into their opposites is to turn the enemies of the totalitarian state into objects of hate so their dissent can be suppressed…
“Drawing on its prodigious power to affect the nation’s consciousness, the Left-- led by the New York Times and the Pulitzer Foundation-- has systematically targeted the American Founding with the intention of burying the American idea and paving the way for a new anti-democratic order.” -p. 103-4

“Zinn condemns the Founders because they ‘ignored the existing inequalities in property.’ Attaching inequalities in property was left to Zinn’s heroes, Stalin and Mao who, in the name of ‘social justice’, murdered more than 100 million people in order to spread poverty and famine among everyone but the party elites.” -p. 114

“Obama’s eight-year administration marked a point of no return in America’s division into two irreconcilable political factions, one defending America’s traditional freedoms and the other marching towards a totalitarian future.” -p. 119

“America’s political order is built on the principles of individual liberty, individual accountability, and individual freedom… This perspective makes each individual unique, and therefore accountable for what they do and who they are. This is also the foundation of the American principle of equality, which insists that by law, citizens are to be judged on their individual merits- not their gender, ethnicity, or skin color. It took nearly two hundred years to approach this ideal, but only fifty years for Democrats to resurrect race politics and make them the center of political discourse. From the moment the Civil Rights Acts were passed, Democrats worked tirelessly to reintroduce race and other collectivities into every aspect of public life.” -p. 151

“Studies soon showed that affirmative action policies did not close the education gaps; in fact, they increased the dropout and failure rates of those they were supposed to benefit. But actual results didn’t matter to the reformers; what mattered was the ideology and the virtue-signaling opportunities of ‘social justice.’” -p. 152

“By the spring of 2020 the legal foundations of a totalitarian state were already in place. At the point 47 of the 50 states had passed ‘hate crimes’ legislation… Every totalitarian regime in history from the Spanish Inquisition to the Stalinist show trials has outlawed unwanted thought. In Stalin’s Russia, being ‘anti-Soviet’ - a critic of the socialist dictatorship- was a thought crime for which tens of millions were dispatched to concentration camps and firing squads.
“The First Amendment, guaranteeing freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and expression, is the foundation of all American freedoms. If citizens cannot form and express opinions freely, they lose the ability to defend their other freedoms. To go from prosecuting ‘hate crimes’ to banning ‘hate speech’ is a small step- and an inevitable one toward the establishment of a totalitarian order.” -p. 154

“How to Be an Antiracist- already a required text in college courses across the nation- is a manual on how to use flexible definitions of ‘hate’ to demonize and destroy political opponents. How to Be an Antiracist provides a rationale for the efforts of left-wing activists to redefine racism to cover any viewpoint that doesn’t conform to theirs. In short, it is a handbook of totalitarian ideology.” -p. 156

“The real target of the Black Lives Matter marxists, the anarchists, the arsonists, and looters is not only white Americans. Their target is America, the nation that gave blacks opportunities they have been denied everywhere else, which these ‘protestors’ take for granted and are fighting to despoil. Sharpton personifies the way in which the civil rights struggle has degenerated over the last sixty years into a racial extortion racket.” -p. 173

“What is more racist than conflating the black community with its criminal element? In fact, the overwhelming majority of black Americans support the police and a tough stance against criminals, not least because they are the chief victims of the violence the Left has unleashed.” -p. 179

“What is troubling for America’s future is the fact that the leaders of the Democrat Party and the so-called ‘liberal’ establishment have shown that they will support treasonous efforts to overthrow the elected president of the United States on the basis of demonstrably false accusations; that they will promote racist lies against their own country; and support racist anti-American violence from paramilitary vigilantes like Antifa and Black Lives matter; that they will suppress free speech in the name of ‘equality’; and that they will propose communist ‘solutions’ like the Green New Deal that would bankrupt the country and eliminate its freedoms.” -p. 179

I picked this book in the library because I wanted to understand how the right has gotten radicalized so much in recent years. Reading this is very helpful to understand the “logic” behind the ideas that extreme-right individuals repeat over and over without really knowing from where they come from.
Unsurprisingly, the book is full of inaccurate and vague statements with questionable references (“Notes”) that give a false impression of referring to facts or being evidence-based. Most references are notes referring to opinion pieces of other extreme-right folks, instead of actual peer-reviewed studies conducted systematically or following the scientific method. Anybody with a minimum critical thinking capacity and who is not reading to confirm his/her own beliefs could catch the instances where the writer attempts to manipulate the reader’s opinion. For example, there is an obscenely excessive use of hyperbole and unnecessary qualifiers (adjectives and adverbs). In the first chapters, the author uses formulas such as the US being the country with “the most” of this or that. Of course, those opinions masked as factual statements are rarely (if ever) supported by a reference. Example on page 12: “the most inclusive and tolerant nation in the world” (of course no citation here). The narrative style is quite poor, histrionic, the book reads like a Greek Tragedy. Repetitions, contradictions, and reiterations are frequent.
Some other jaw dropping ideas presented in the book:
Page 28: “…the ability to accumulate wealth is determined in large part by genes…” (of course no citation here).
Page 104: “America is unique among nations in being founded not on an identity rooted in “blood and soil” but on a set of shared universal values” (again of course, no citation here). Impressive how somebody can say that about any country in the American continent…
I could continue with many more…
In short, extreme-right propaganda. If you are able to pinch your nose during 200 pages, very interesting to read and be prepared to argue with the extreme-right zombies. Otherwise very scary to see how the actual totalitarians are claiming that progressive ideology, humanism, and science are the totalitarians.

"This is obviously not a framework for scholarly inquiry, but a political diatribe that is both historically ignorant and bigoted."
- David Horowitz, author of The Enemy Within

This quote from his own book (albeit out of context) should serve as a forewarning to the reader for what's to come.  It would be easy to simply excuse this text as complete dribble, cover-to-cover ... if it weren't for the dangerous foothold that this degraded mentality has claimed in this era of American history.

Horowitz offers such arguments as: "Systemic racism cannot exist ... because Oprah is a billionaire", and "How could there be white-privilege if we once elected a black guy as president?"  One would expect no better from their drunk uncle at Thanksgiving. But these paper-thin fabrications appear lazy in comparison to his argument that White Christian Males should NOT be viewed as the oppressors in the story of slavery in America, but instead worshipped as Saviors - for how else could the 13-15th Amendments and the Civil Rights Act have come into being without the benevolence of White Christian Males?

Horowitz attempts to support these bold claims in his "Notes" section (thankfully he at least has had the decency to not call these "Citations"). Comprising a full 20% of the written text (!), these notes contain such laudable sources as Wikipedia, articles and books written by the author himself, websites created by the author, and my personal favorite ... "A Google search for 'abolition of whiteness' yields over one million results" (direct quote). Any grade school teacher would flunk the student who submitted this assignment .

The Enemy Within is nothing more than a love-letter to his fellow racists.

PS. The "author" seems to "believe" that the "excessive" use of "quotation marks" will serve as an "effective" method of expressing both "emphasis" and "snark". On the "contrary", it has only helped to "prove" the "fact" that the "author" is a "complete fool".

Raised by parents who were official members of the Communist Party USA, then himself a founding intellectual member of the radical New Left in the 1960’s, David Horowitz has first-hand experience with the strategies and tactics used by Marxist Americans to take over the modern Democrat Party. And because he used to be one of their own, and then defected, The Left hates Horowitz with a passion usually only reserved for the likes of Trump. In his book, “The Enemy Within”, he explains with precision and clarity the methodical and diabolical way the Far Left has created today’s one-party-rule that is leading America rapidly down the path-of-no-return to an abusive totalitarian government. His focus is the years since 2016 where we have witnessed every insanity: wild abuses of power in Congress; blatant corruption of the FBI, DOJ, and other federal institutions; total anarchy in our city streets during Antifa/ BLM riots that have destroyed property and lives; vile vilification of our Constitution, Bill of Rights and our Founding Fathers—to name just a few topics covered in the book. In addition, Horowitz also provides the methodical steps the Far Left took in the latter half of the 20th century that have brought us to the brink of this treacherous inflection point in American history. There is a very enlightening chapter that describes how once respectable organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center have been completely corrupted and weaponized by the Left to create enemy hit lists of Conservatives; these lists are then used to vilify and cancel anyone who dares to speak out against the Marxist mob. Horowitz himself has been a target of this evil, un-American practice. This is a book you NEED to read if America is to survive the 21st century. But be forewarned: it’s maddening, frightening and depressing.

Horowitz is an interesting man. He grew up in a communist household and was a student activist. He knew people in the Black Panthers and he even recommended a friend to be their accountant. In the 80s, he became a Republican.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks for themselves (like Fox Mulder of the X-Files says, question everything). We must study history for ourselves and FACT-CHECK our politicians, pundits, and media. After all, well-informed citizens are the heart of democracy (Thomas Jefferson).

In this book, Horowitz discusses many topics that have been in the national discussion. Including the 1619 project and slavery, the use of police force, why democracies fail, and mail in ballots, and lots more.

This book has loads of food for thought. Some information even surprised me. I spent time combing through Horowitz's footnotes and checking out the links. I'll continue to read reading through the reports and references he shared.

I am including just a few of the notes I took (mostly to help myself process them). But I encourage you to read the book yourself.

Of the 10.7 million Africans sold into slavery only about 388,000 were shipped to America. According to my calculations (thank you online percentage calculators!), that’s a total percentage 3.63%.

Source: https://www.pbs.org/wnet/african-amer...

In Zora Neal Hurston's autobiography, “Dust tracks in the road (1944, 1995) she talked about meeting Cudjoe Lewis, the last slave to come over on a slave ship to the US. What he told her is backed up by historical sources.

“…the inescapable fact that stuck in my craw, was: my people had sold me and the white people had bought me. That did away with the folklore I had been brought up on … I know that civilized money stirred up African greed. … No, my own people had butchered and killed, exterminated whole nations and torn families apart, for a profit before strangers got their chance at a cut. …It impressed upon me the universal nature of greed and glory. ..” (p. 164-166)

Back in the early 1970s, Larry Delano Coleman, who wrote the blog that this quote was taken from attended an assembly of black activists and scholars at Cramton Auditorium, Howard University. At that meeting the U.S. ambassador from Benin, formerly known as "Dahomey," West Africa, apologized to an assembly of black activists and scholars for his country's culpability in the African slave trade.

The 1619 Project states that we have been racist since the beginning because in August 1619 colonists bought 20-30 enslaved Africans from ENGLISH pirates.

Bear in mind that:
*Virginia was not America in 1619 (would not be until 1776) we were an English Colony, following English Laws.
*Slavery was actually illegal in Virginia Colony in 1619. It did not become legal until a series of laws between 1660-1680s).
*These “slaves” were actually indentured servants. According to Nell Painter (an African-American historian at Princeton).
*Demography of early labor in Virginia….
-by 1680 only 7% of Virginians were of African descent
-by 1700 this had risen to 20%
-by 1750 50% (or 100,000)

“In short, the 1619 Africans were not “enslaved”. They were townspeople in the Ndongo district of Angola who had been captured by Imbangala warlords and delivered to the port of Luanda for shipment to the Americas. Raiding, capturing and selling people was not an exclusively African practice.

“Raiding for captives to sell belongs to a long human history that knows no boundaries of time, place or race.” Here Painter echoes Zora Neale Thurston.

Painter shares the example of an Angolan man called Antonio who came to Virginia in 1621 and became Anthony Johnson, a wealthy free farmer and slave-owning planter in Northhampten and Accomack counties.

Painter also discusses Trump 2019 speech at Jamestown and the emblematic version of the American ideology of race and “essentialist” thinking. Painter explains that in this ideology the Jamestown Africans are always already enslaved. “You are intrinsically what you always must be. When enslavement is the essence of black identity, black people cannot figure as American working men and women who play an active role in American history. …”

“Why is this history of 1619 important now, at a time when versions of American society compete politically, when one fraction of the citizenry plots a return to an America whose image was white, and another fraction of the citizenry embraces an evolution into a multiracial, multicultural democracy? Because how we envision our past shapes how we see ourselves today. One of the favorite objectives of white pride makes this point.”

“A multicultural, multiracial version of US history is broader than easily categorized heroes, insiders, and outsiders. The history that can serve us now recognizes a continual process in which identities are shared, shaped and changed over time and place. It understands that statuses of freedom and servitude are not permanent, essential identities. It can see identity as processes that continue as we speak.”

Painter's book, The History of White People and Creating Black Americans, is on my must read list.

Horowitz shares the story behind “Strange fruit song”. I know the song but I didn't know the full story.

Three men were accused of murder and rape. A mob attacked jail (extrajudicial) and hung 2 of the men. The third - James Cameron -claimed he didn’t want to participate in the robbery and murder, so he stayed in the car. A white man affirmed his innocence. Cameron wasn’t lynched, although he did stand trial and served 4 years as an accessory to the crime before the fact. Cameron spent the rest of his life fighting for civil rights, including founding the NAACP in Indiana (Horowitz heard the story on PBS…it's likely still on there; I haven't had a chance to search yet.).

Source: Anatomy of a Lynching article: (October 2016). https://archives.frontpagemag.com/fpm...

More background on extrajudicial lynching.

Slavery existed in Africa for a thousand years before a white person ever set foot there, and for 3,000 years in all societies. It is what peoples of all races and ethnicities imposed on their enemies when they conquered them. Moreover, for 3,000 years no one declared slavery to be immoral - not Aristotle, not Moses, not Jesus, not the African slavers - until white Protestant Christians in England did so towards the end of the 18th Century. {Again this echoes Hurston and Painter...}

My opinion...Obviously we can do better on a lot of fronts. However, since the 1990s, America has had two black Secretaries of State, a black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, three black heads of the National Security Council, and thousands of black elected officials at state and municipal levels. Major American cities like Atlanta, Philadelphia and Baltimore are run by blacks and many more are governed by black mayors, black police chiefs, black judges, non-white majority city councils and black superintendents of schools. Also, the percentage of blacks in the US Military is higher than their percentage in our general population.

The media are constantly focused on cops killing blacks and the use of police force. And Horowitz discusses this thoroughly sharing several sources that I read further.

2014 Data: According to the Centers for Disease Control, the police killed 261 whites and 131 blacks. The CDC also found that from 1999 to 2013, the police killed almost twice the number of whites compared to blacks, 3,160 and 1,724, respectively.

Here's what those promoting the "police disproportionately kill black people" narrative consistently omit. Whites, despite being almost 65 percent of the population, disproportionately commit less of the nation's violent crime – 10 percent. Blacks, at 13 percent of the population, disproportionately commit more violent crime. Blacks commit nearly half of murders. Yet whites are 50 percent of cop killings.

Source: 2016. Larry Elder. The Truth about cops killing blacks. https://www.wnd.com/2016/07/the-truth...

Roland G. Fryer, an African-American researcher and professor at Harvard did an "An Empirical Analysis of Racial Differences in Police Use of Force", which did not get much airplay on our media that I can remember.

On the most extreme use of force – officer-involved shootings – this study found no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account. We argue that the patterns in the data are consistent with a model in which police officers are utility maximizers, a fraction of which have a preference for discrimination, who incur relatively high expected costs of officer-involved shootings.

Source: 2016 (Updated 2019). Fryer, Roland G. An Empirical Analysis of Racial Differences in Police Use of Force. https://www.nber.org/papers/w22399

Heather Mac Donald Article discusses these statistics and studies as well.

Bureau of Justice Statistics released its 2018 survey of criminal victimization. According to the study, there were 593,598 interracial violent victimizations (excluding homicide) between blacks and whites last year, including white-on-black and black-on-white attacks. Blacks committed 537,204 of those interracial felonies, or 90 percent, and whites committed 56,394 of them, or less than 10 percent. That ratio is becoming more skewed, despite the Democratic claim of Trump-inspired white violence. In 2012-13, blacks committed 85 percent of all interracial victimizations between blacks and whites; whites committed 15 percent. From 2015 to 2018, the total number of white victims and the incidence of white victimization have grown as well.

Blacks are also overrepresented among perpetrators of hate crimes—by 50 percent—according to the most recent Justice Department data from 2017; whites are underrepresented by 24 percent. This is particularly true for anti-gay and anti-Semitic hate crimes.

Key parts of the intersectional narrative are not born out by the actual data.

Blacks are also overrepresented among perpetrators of hate crimes—by 50 percent—according to the most recent Justice Department data from 2017; whites are underrepresented by 24 percent. This is particularly true for anti-gay and anti-Semitic hate crimes.

In 2008, Barack Obama was able to connect such lawlessness to family breakdown. “Children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of schools and twenty times more likely to end up in prison,” he pointed out in his Chicago speech. Today’s taboo on acknowledging the behavioral roots of criminal-justice system involvement, multi-generational poverty, and the academic-achievement gap is not a civil rights advance. To the contrary, it will ensure that racial disparities persist, where they can be milked by opportunistic politicians and activists seeking to parade their own alleged racial sensitivity and to deflect attention away from the cultural changes that must occur for full racial parity to be realized.

He makes a lot of good points, but likes to ignore some pretty glaring facts when it comes to world events. He ignores the entirety of the gulf of Tonkin incident and is adamant that we should’ve been in Vietnam, or he refused to speak on Bush’s extreme ignorance during 9/11. Good messages, won’t take the final step.

Gotta be careful writing reviews for books like this. Never know if Goodreads is gonna go all "Twitter" or "Facebook" on me and ban my reviews. They might say I'm engaging in "Hate Speech" or I'm spreading "Misinformation".

So, umm, this book was bad. Full of mean stuff and it is very offensive. And probably racist. YEAH !!
David Horowitz is a meany. And,and, and he ummm says mean stuff about nice people like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden. So, DON'T READ THIS BOOK. It's poopy smelly. ; )

I have read previous books by David Horwitz and was excited to read this one as well.

It was very well-written and concise in its facts about the "enemy within" our country.

The 'American Marxists' who are intent on ruining America are making headway and it is up to those of us who value America's core values of freedom need to pay more attention to this insidious ideology which has taken root. If you care about America and our precious freedoms, you need to read this book.

The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement is Destroying America by David Horowitz “is a book for all patriots who understand that our country is in a fight for its life.”—MARK LEVIN. America is on the Brink with a questionable election. The president of the United States illegally impeached—twice—and silenced on social media. The First Amendment hanging by a thread. The national heritage under attack. Mob violence. America is literally on the brink of becoming a one-party dictatorship. How did this happen?

The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement Is Destroying America provides the answer.

• Their complicity in the riots of the summer of 2020, which left twenty-five dead, injured two thousand police officers, caused billions of dollars in property damage, and revealed the fragility of our civic order

As Abraham Lincoln so presciently warned on the eve of America’s last existential crisis, “If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live for all time, or die by suicide.” In The Enemy Within, David Horowitz provides a spot-on assessment of the threat to the American Republic and points to an escape route—while there’s still time. David Horowitz knows what he is talking about when the subject is communist or socialist ideology, having spent a large part of his life as a supporter and believer and is familiar with the tactics and strategies used by leftists to indoctrinate our kids in the public school system and using the courts to try to push their agenda to overthrow the US government. An eye-opening read!

In David Horowitz’s “The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement is Destroying America,” Horowitz chronicles how the American left is working to create division in our country. This is a timely book, for even as I write, Joe Biden is courting the "Death to America" vote, and financing hateful educational initiatives through his Department of Education.

Horowitz has a unique perspective. As a young man, he studied under Bertram Wolfe, and adopted leftist theories. During his career at Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley, he organized protests against the Vietnam war, and aligned himself with the Black Panther Party.
By 1984, Horowitz realized that the Democrat party had left him. He voted for Ronald Reagan and became a critic of the Left. “The Enemy Within” examines the turmoil that has rocked America since 2015.

Identity politics, really Cultural Marxism—the idea that American society is characterized by oppression, dominates academia and the legacy media, today. The author argues that the Left shares the same goals that Marx did in the 19th century: the “ambition to remake the world.”

Horowitz asserts that America’s founding is inconvenient to Marxists. The Declaration of Independence is an affront to the politics of power. Horowitz describes how the legacy media has made an effort to downplay the ideals of the founding and focuses exclusively on America’s faults. A goal shared by many in academia, a large plurality of bureaucrats, and many unwitting fellow travelers.

These myths are weapons. The Left wants a culture war. When we view today’s events through the prism Horowitz provides, the future is bleak. We are faced with a stark choice: What do we want America to be, a bastion of freedom or a playground for Utopian fantasists?

Wow! Fantastic read. Could not put it down. I felt like I relived the last 12 years of political politics and domestic terrorism within our country. This book covers so much material pertaining to President Donald Trump, Biden, Antifa, Black Lives Maternity, Democratic Party, and election fraud, and so much more. I now have a much better understanding on how President Trump and the Republican Party has been loosing the battle over getting our message out, how the conservatives hands were tied, and how big tech companies colluded with democrats to keep our message out of mainstream mainstream media to reach the masses. This book is very well referenced backing up the facts discussed within this book. A MUST READ FOR EVERY CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN WANTING ANSWERS. My only hope is that we are able to hold key payers in Democratic Party accountable for their actions.

“The Enemy Within” is a must read for anyone who is not in lock step with democrats/socialists/communists and their party as it stands today. He writes about university and their must read books and I believe that all views should be discussed and placing this book on that list also should be done immediately. I have always taught my students all sides then allow them to develop their critical thinking skills. If you develop critical thinking skills you will never vote for a democrat, as the party stands today, again! I highly recommend read this book then if you still do not see the light, do your own research and discover the lies of the left for yourself!

Spectacular read. Well referenced.

For those looking for an authoritative behind the scenes perspective on the Zero Sum political game being played out by extreme Leftists, The Enemy Within is without a doubt one of the best currently available. Horowitz has been warning us for decades, but those warnings seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. This new appendage to his anthology is as much a lament, as it is another timely warning, from a man, whose experience as a leftist gives the kind of insight rarely spoken in public. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
