I liked this one better than the first book. I think the party dynamic is better settled, and it's always more satisfying for me to read about mage characters when they're a little more useful in a fight, past that truly beginning stage. Bartok was a lot more engaging in this one for that reason. I also love all the off-beat, unexpected details that this world is populated with. The tattoo shop in Wetwater comes to mind, as does Diremaw's snack obsession. Those little details make a middle grade series entertaining and fun even for an older reader.

Overall: it's funtastic. Similar to a bunch of 11-year olds playing DnD. It was great. My girls (6 and 4 years old) loved it.

I got this book for the kid for Christmas. I thought the title would appeal to his 8 year old humor. He did not want to read it. I finally forced him to read it with me. He enjoyed it so much he has now read he first one and wants the other two. Sometimes mom’s do know things.

He said this book was pretty good. He did not have a favorite part, he liked it all. His favorite characters were Buckey (Art) and Tick Tock. His least favorite character was Ferny.

I enjoyed this book. I liked how they got experience points and levels. I thought that was cute. It was also not super in your face like the Minecraft book we recently read. I thought the characters were fun. And there were good lessons about friendships in there too. I hope we read some more of these together.

As good as the first but we traded some of the bodily function humor for character development. I am looking forward to the next two!

The story: Fart (a mage in training) and his companions Pan (an elf) and Moxie (a dwarf) set out on a quest to find the elusive substance known as Bedazzler barf. Their task is rendered nearly impossible because there is only one person who knows the whereabouts of a Bedazzler, and that’s the wicked Pirate Diremaw, who kills anyone who ever sees his face. The crew jumps from one adventure to the next--but the last one may be a real killer.

June Cleaver's ratings: Language G; Violence PG; Sexual content G; Nudity G; Substance abuse G; Magic & the occult: PG; GLBT content G; adult themes G; overall rating PG. Good for grades 3-6.

Liz's comments: Despite the crass series title "Fart Quest", this is an entertaining action/fantasy adventure with fighting, magic, and even hillbilly elves. Fart learns that he is enough, whatever his mage status, and a note from Pan at the end guarantees a sequel dealing with the possibly-nefarious motives of the Great and Powerful Kevin. In all, here’s a series that will appeal to the kids who love underwear, farting, and juvenile humor. The spot-on game-card illustrations will attract a separate set of fans, and those who like magical quests in easy doses will also find much to enjoy. Hand it to readers who like Max Brallier’s “Last Kids on Earth” books.

The second book in the series *Fart Quest* was just as amusing as the first one. I had fun reading this one. Yes, it's aimed at kids. Yes, it's still essentially an extended fart joke HOWEVER - there's a good story in there too.

The companions that are travelling and having adventures together learn valuable lessons along the way. While these things are being done, the book itself is actually introducing kids to some of the concepts of role playing games - including experience points and levelling up.

I don't have an elementary schooler anymore, but these are exactly the sort of books I'd be reading with a kid in that age group. I'm really glad I picked this series up.

This sequel had a bit more heart to it than the first book did, so I enjoyed it more. There was a bit more legitimately funny parts in this installment, and I hope the series improves as the characters develop. I believe that as they grow, the ability for the authors to get some good humor in there will improve. Cute series for younger readers (or fools like me with the sense of humor of a young reader).

I can not say how much my kids and I are enjoying these audio books. The narrator is phenomenal. Hilariously written. Engaging and good for ages 6 to 99. (Not sure kids younger would understand the terminology or points being awarded the characters throughout the book)

I highly recommend this to anyone with kiddos who enjoyed reading Captain Underpants, Ben Braver or the Bad Guys series.

I've now read two of the books in the Fart Quest series with my 5-year-old and, I'll be honest, even if he weren't into them—which he is, by the way, but even if he weren't—I might continue reading them myself.

I've really enjoyed reading these two books. Despite the gross-out title, the books aren't as crude as you might expect. Yes, the first one was about a quest to retrieve a "fart" and this one is admittedly an attempt to gather magical barf. But it's nowhere near as disgusting as something like the R.L. Stine The Garbage Pail Kids series, the first of which includes "a scene where a dog defecates profusely on stage at an awards ceremony, causing the presenter in turn to vomit extraordinarily into a trophy." Odo and I did start reading the second in that series but gave up on it because its one-joke premise really was not interesting a second time around.

Here, the "barf" of it all is a minor part of the story, whereas a lot more of it is about the journey the characters take. I'd say this one is better than the first. One of the characters confronts her own classist prejudice; another confronts grief more directly than in the last book; and our narrator is dealing with both feeling that he's falling behind his friends in terms of his abilities and later has to navigate the guilt he experiences after unthinkingly using his powers against one of his team. There's more depth to the narrative, I think, than in the first and that's exciting. I have a relationship with the characters now, too, so those inwardly focused emotional beats probably mean more now than they would have in the first book, anyway.

The plot is mostly clever. Using the name of a gang which robs them at the beginning of the book, they vie to become part of a fearsome pirate's crew on a ship called the "Death Knell". To earn their place on deck, they have to compete against other groups of prospective pirates to get the Kraken's flatbread, a perfectly baked flatbread loaf preserved by magic below the waves. Before their adventure is through, the group faces off against both a Lich and a shipwreck which has been brought to life, with muscled arms and legs and gnashing teeth, and which towers above them. That image is pretty cool. Not only is the core trio present in this book, but TickTock returns, and surprisingly the ogre Bucket plays a major role as well.

After the flatbread is gathered, they give it to the pirate captain (who is the Bedazzler of the title— a massive floating eyeball with a mouth), who grows green and upchucks when he realizes there is cilantro on it. Odesa independently recalled that earlier in the book the Bedazzler expressed his disdain for cilantro. He also surmised that Moxie, who had been working in the kitchen before their adventure and went to the kitchen again just before this exchange, ostensibly to "change out of her apron", likely added the cilantro to the flatbread to cause the Bedazzler to blow chunks. Once he said it, I realized that was quite obviously what had occurred, but until he said it I truly had not considered it. I was so impressed with him for piecing that together!

Anyway, yes, just as I said in my review of the first one: among the books I have read with Odesa, this series is one of the better I've come across. I'm happy to learn there are 2 more to read. I'm eager to remain in this world with these characters.

(Also, not for nothin', because I'm reading these aloud with my 5-year-old, I've developed voices for the main characters and I have them nailed down. I want to read the next two in part so I can continue using the voices I've created, rather than having to invent new voices for whatever next non-Fart book we read.)

I received an electronic ARC from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group through NetGalley.
The book picks up shortly after the first adventure ended. Fart, Moxie and Pan continue to build their connections as a team and hone their skills. Together with TickTock, they set out on a second quest for an item Kevin wants. Along the way, they team up with Bucket too. Adventure and fun with plenty of humor for middle grade readers. Reynolds knows how to weave ridiculousness with adventure and bring readers along as part of the story. Love the hint of more adventures to come from Pan at the end.

The likable crew of Fart, Pan, and Moxie (human, elf, dwarf) set off to complete another quest for the Great and Powerful Kevin. This one involves a bedazzler--a creature whose gemstones shoot beams of power!

TickTock (a phibling / froglike creature) accompanies them. New ogre friend, Bucket, is quite the artist.

Part of this hilarious, fast-paced adventure takes place aboard a pirate ship where Fart and friends have to do a seemingly impossible task.

LOL funny scenes and art make this book stand out as a favorite for middle-grade readers.

I've been reading this series with my 10 year old and he loves them!

He rates this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars and he said he really enjoyed the adventure in this book and his favorite character is TickTock because he feels like they would be friends.

This was so dumb. I was trying to see it from a kids' perspective and I guess some would like it. It had a RPG theme and I'm not sure many younger kids play those any more.

updated review 2025:

9/10

I love this series. They are great for young readers, and old readers looking for a funny, entertaining quest.

There are great themes of friendship throughout.

reminder: this is hopefully one of my last Goodreads reviews. i am moving to either fable or story graph (leaning towards story graph) to escape the Amazon/bezos ecosystem. plus this app has never been great, it's just all I've ever known.

my old review:

I didn't like this one as much as the first one, maybe because i listened instead of read. It was still fun to listen to it with the little ones.

Read this book to my nearly 5 year old son. Moving from picture books to chapter books, and this one had enough images to keep him interested. It was a fun story, but I was a bit disappointed at the end, but overall a silly book.
