Eilís Barret is 16 years old and hails from Galway, where she shares a home with her mother, three brothers and her dog, Rosie.

Eilís and her brothers are home-schooled by their mum, Bernadette, who is devoted to her kids finding their passion in life. From a young age, Eilís had a lot of freedom regarding how she spent her time and was encouraged to do what she was good at.

With an insatiable imagination, Eilís watched countless nature documentaries, taught herself to play the piano and devised complicated imaginary games that could go on for weeks. But there was one place where she knew she truly belonged … between the pages of a book. And it wasn’t long before her own stories made it onto paper too.

At the age of 12, Eilís decided that she was going to take writing seriously. Within two years she had written two full-length novels. At the age of 15, Eilís signed a book deal with Gill Books.

Bana distopyadan istediğim her şeyi verdi.

I'm a little conflicted about my review for this book. I saw it in Galway before the author came for a reading and signing, and though I couldn't make it to the reading, I got a signed copy. And signed copies are always better. :)

Also she is sixteen. SIX-TEEN.

There is nothing I could have written at sixteen of my own creation that was like this. She is only going to get better and better at writing, and that is going to be an interesting read itself!

Also, the premise of this book is uh-maaaaaz-ing. I really wanted to find out about oasis of Oasis, the gene virus, the Celian Towers... and the cover is just to die for.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON

But. The largest middle of the book tired me out. It was just a lot of characters talking to each other and walking in and out of a house. The girl, Quincy, at least acknowledged that there was absolutely no reason for characters to do anything she said, but then they did anyway. WHY?

Also, she reminded me too much of Katniss. Not because I think she's a copy, but because she has this terrible, self-centred, negative attitude the whole time. I was actually delighted when she chose her own freedom over the life of Random Girl called Beatrice, and that she wasn't immediately conflicted. New theme! But, then she got conflicted. And had to save a little sister. Zzz. And I just always end up hating these self-centred girl protagonists. They get everything they want and yet they do nothing but be negative and complain.

Kole was also pretty one dimensional. Or maybe two dimensional. He kind of swung between being two different characters, and I didn't really care about him.

Clarke, Lacey and Jay I LIKED. They had potential. They are tropes, but I like tropes. I don't know why we had the red herring of Clarke being dangerous, but maybe it will come into play in the future. Lacey was lovely, and I really enjoyed her brief reappearance in the kitchen despite the fact that she was dead (yo, editors!!!). Jay is also terribly interesting. I want to know what's going on there, Mr Knife-smile.

Now, I'm finished criticising this brave teenage author, and I don't do it out of meanness. I want to know what happens next. :D

Because the end was good. It was short, and there was more running around than necessary, and it was rushed more than I wanted it to be, but it was GOOD.

The author has a talent for reconnecting little dropped breadcrumbs in the book, like Bea's cancer, later on in the novel. Things I would have missed or forgotten if I had given up on that tiresome middle section.

There was very little about the actual Celian City in this book, despite the jacket and summary promises. However, now I look forward to finding out more about it, since Quincy is going to be there for a little while! Where did celian come from? Is it related to the virus and the cure? What are the differences between the Celian City and the Inner Circle? I want to know what life is like there.

The virus and the secretly developed Cure were interesting, and I liked that it wasn't shrouded in mystery. It was just a thing. I would love to learn more about life before Oasis, with the virus, and what it did to people. Does everyone really have the cure? Or is there a chance it could come back?

Who are Genesis?

How did they hack the computer in Quincy's workplace?

Why are there leftover houses outside the walls?

What country are we even in?

Will someone please draw a map of this world, and some art of the Celian City!!!!

I actually do look forward to the next book, and best of luck with ALL your writing, Eilís!

2.9 stars. The fact that this book was written by a fifteen year old is hugely impressive!! It reminds of books like Shatter Me and Divergent, both of which weren't inherently unpleasant to read, but I just personally didn't enjoy as much. This was a bit of a slow read for me and I didn't really connect to the characters too much. Not a full 3 stars simply because i couldn't really get into it (maybe that's because I just finished heir of fire and any book i read straight after a ToG one probably doesn't get the justice it deserves). Nonetheless a very impressive debut for such a young author!

Big thank you to the publisher, Gill Books, for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I was so excited to read this book as the blurb sounded like something I would really enjoy, and Eilis is only 16 years old and is Irish like me!

I first heard about this book last October when I attended Dept Con. Eilis was a speaker at one of the panels and I was so impressed by the eloquent way she spoke and so shocked that was just 16. Eilis is such an inspirational young woman having gotten a two book publishing deal at the age of just 15. I could not wait to read Oasis and when I did read it- I loved it!

Oasis was the kind of book that slowly creeps into your heart. You're 50 pages in and enjoying it and the next thing you know you can not stop reading the book and even when you're doing something else you are constantly thinking about Quincey and Kole and the virus!

One of my absolute favourite things about this novel was Quincey. I loved Quincey. As the protagonist she brings us through this story and we learn so much about her. I really felt a connection to her when I was reading and really enjoyed reading the story through her matter-of-fact way of assessing the situation and motivation to just survive. I loved her interactions with Lacey and Bea but most of all Kole.

Woah let me talk about Kole real quick. I loved Kole. He was there for Quincey from the very beginning just and he has this really caring side where he looks out for everyone and has the groups best interest at heart. Quincey and Kole were my OTP ..... but I also kind of love Jay too. When I was reading this book, I kept picturing Kole as Devon Bostick (from The 100)!

The plot of the novel was really gripping from the very beginning. I became familiar with the lingo and the setting so quickly and loved reading Quincey's backstory and all about the formation of Oasis. There was a strong "The 100" vibe to the novel, which was fine with me as I ADORE The 100, so just imagine lots of running, fighting, bad ass characters and group survival dynamics.

Eilis has created such a vivid set of character living in this nightmare-ish world of class systems and abuse. Eilis has such a gripping and flawless writing style that you could easily read this book for hours. I also enjoyed the short-ish chapters. Eilis has such amazing writing ability that I can not wait to read all of her work in the future!

I had a few small problems with the novel but not too many. I found a few of the plot twists to be obvious and I could see one of the major twists from the start of the novel. I think this may because I overthink everything and has nothing to do with Eilis's writing style. Apart from a few predictable plot twists- I really really enjoyed this novel and need the next book right now!! I'm gonna give this a 4 . 5 rating!

Also if you have read this novel, please tweet me and talk to me about it!

(3.5++/5)

An overall very good debut novel. The quick pacing is interesting, sometimes a bit too quick as I think you could spare a few pages here and there before moving on to the next thing, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves in the next books. The story was enjoyable, although the main attraction for me was the fascinating Quincy. She was very well written, quite complex, and really captivating at times. She overshadowed most of the secondary characters, but some of them (Clarke for instance) managed to shine through.

There is room for growth in the writing (although it is already very good, and even excellent at times), but the same could be said for any writer, and Eilis Barrett has nothing to envy her elders. Grow she will, and become even more amazing!

I don't even know where to begin with this book. It was AMAZING!!!I mean it. I loved everything about this from the characters to the plot, to the ending..OMG THE ENDING! Such an amazing story and it's hard to name anything I didn't like about it. Everything was so perfectly phrased and written and I cheered Quincy on no matter what. I was glued to this book and couldn't put it down. When it ended, my insides just crumbled and I may aswell have just fallen through the earth. It was PHENOMENAL. There was a plot twist at every corner but it remained amazing nevertheless it may be my favorite book I read in a while and all I can say right now, is go buy this book and i'm just sitting here anxiously waiting for the second book to come out 5/5 stars, defenitely deserved it.

1/5 stars. 2/10. How many times can somebody growl, hiss or snarl?! Please enlighten me. I appreciate the fact the author was young when she wrote this but it just wasn't very good writing in my opinion. The plot was predictable, inconsistent and really lagged in the middle. As for the characters, they were all boring and one dimensional with no personality whatsoever. Quincy lacked any common sense and spent half of the moping about over Aaron and Bea. Kole was the epitomy of a cliché brooding love interest who lacked any chemistry with Quincy. I wanted to love this book as I tend to enjoy dystopians and I like supporting Irish authors, especially other young women but alas it just wasn't for me.

It was pretty okay, the writing was good, but some sentences were very dramatic and made me laugh because they were so dramatic and didn't even make sense. It was obvious which character Quincy was going to be with which made the book slightly less exciting having said that although I wasn't shocked about the relationship I did think it was a very cute match. Some of the plot twists were obvious but others were very surprising. Overall an easy read but very like other books and lacked some originality with characters. The premise of the story was however very original.

It was a slow start, I almost gave up. However I'm glad I persevered with this book.
It was quite interesting, something new and fresh that I have read in the past while.
I have grown to enjoy the Quincy and Kole's gang and also Quincy and Kole's chemistry.

I am amazed that the book was written by a sixteen year old, I don't I would have executed as well as she did.
I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next in the next book.

Loved this book!! Eilis is an amazing writer! I loved the plot and it kept my on the edge of my seat a good bit!! The only thing I would have liked is a little more character information but I assume that will come in the second book which I can't wait to start now!! 5 stars from me which I truly think it deserves!!

İkinci kitabı olan Genesis’i merakla bekliyorum.

Okay so this book was not for me, I had DNF it around 60 pages in. This book was violent and depressing, I'm sure a lot of people would find this book compelling however I had no interest in anything like that at the moment. I'm challenging myself to work through my TBR list but I want to read books that bring me on a positive / interesting journey - not books that feel like a struggle.

No huge complaints about the book. My favourite aspect was the character development of each character. The beginning and end were exciting to read but I think the middle was a bit dragged out but overall an enjoyable read and I can't wait to start the second book :)

4.5 stars.

A little slow in places, the main character could be infuriating at times and the book was a little jumpy (the story didn't flow) but overall an enjoyable read.

This book seemed more for a younger audience, the romance scenes were very very basic and a little forced (hence ideal for a younger reader) had the author used more emotion she could easily break into the YA reader audience (in easons it was in the section for 12 year olds (even without the emotion it's an ok read for the YA dystopian lover (but it could be better))). The storyline was good and the prologue had me hooked. I read the book in one sitting.

There were a few fast moving action scenes and the book did throw a few curveballs.

There was a lot of intricate detail that wasn't really needed but that said the world building was good and easy to visualise.

The characters at times lacked depth, you don't really get to know them.

The cliff hanger ending will have me reading the next book. I've got a feeling all my faults with this book will be lessoned or erased in the next one as the authors writing style improved as the book went on. (The first couple of chapters were slow and repetitive)

* I have just seen the author is 16, that certainly explains the lack of romance/emotion. If the author looks inside herself and puts into words what she feels when she sees a boy she likes perhaps she could put that emotion into Quincy. Because I just didn't feel it from her.

I would also ask Eilis to follow Siobhan Davis another Irish YA author who writes sci-fi/ dystopian/romance. She is on Facebook too.

Good luck

(I live in Ennis, just down the road from you)
