Junkyard Pirate #2

Old Dogs, Older Tricks

Rate this book
He’s a Vietnam vet, with a new lease on life. To fight an out-of-this-world invasion, he’ll need a little help from his friends…

Albert Jenkins never cared much for bureaucrats and politicians. So when the Galactic Congress refuses to act on the illegal invasion of Earth by parasitic aliens, he does what any self-respecting vet would do – he steals a spaceship. But when AJ and a snarky pop-culture loving alien companion are pursued by space cops, he does the only rational thing he can come up with. He strategically crash lands on a junkyard moon.

When he finally make it back home with what he hopes is a cure for the occupying parasites, he discovers the situation is worse than expected. The microscopic invaders have redoubled their efforts to strip Earth of critical resources, yet undiscovered by humanity. Knowing that time is in short supply, AJ calls on his network of crusty yet elite buddies from 'Nam. Fortunately, it does not take much convincing to get these aging patriots to saddle up one more time to kick some alien ass.

With youth restored, this elite squad of old vets will pit themselves against an unseen enemy. The question is – can they put an end to this global invasion once and for all?

Old Dogs, Older Tricks is the second book in the wild Junkyard Pirate space opera series. If you like sarcastic heroes, hilarious extraterrestrial sidekicks, and ragtag military units, then you’ll love Jamie McFarlane’s epic adventure.

Notes:

3.5 Stars for Story
Good follow up to the first book but the story flow was a bit too even. I like that it's a story about older people getting a younger take on life again. That it's a story about good people doing their best. Definitely a series to read if you need a positive outlook and a dash of humor.

I blame Jamie McFarlane for my having to stay at home and the premature end of my ski season. In fact, I blame Jamie McFarlane for the Cookie Duster conspiracy behind the spread of the coronavirus and am waiting for the new Plandemic video to come out. Despite that, while I mostly enjoyed "Old Dogs, Older Tricks," I became weary of the premise of the rejuvenated Vietnam veterans saving the day and wanted the story to progress beyond that construct. When it did and he concentrated on the characters, the story was more enjoyable; otherwise I just wanted it to end. Overall, nowhere near as good as Privateer Tales, but worth reading.

4 stars. It takes a while to ratchet up some real speed but once it does, the action is really top-notch! The strength remains with the characters and the 'situation' everyone finds themselves in, where I found OD,OT a slightly more enjoyable read than part 1, probably since I was really feeling a strong connection to the main players by the end.

I'm just glad I "found" this book. You see, I read "Junkyard Pirate" a few days ago and was really ... annoyed is the right word, sorry... that I couldn't find ANYTHING about a sequel. Not on the author's website, not here on goodreads, no mention of pre-orders anywhere including on amazon, nada. Well, imagine my surprise when yesterday I was working out my usual weekly 'what will I read next?' dilemma by going through recent authors I had enjoyed... and here this book was! Seriously folks, we need to work on our promotion and marketing a bit! I just regret not being able to go straight on from book 1 to this one... but then again it was released THE DAY AFTER I PUT UP MY REVIEW! Sheesh...

But like I said earlier, this book is a lot of fun and I kept sneaking valuable minutes of reading time over the past hours because I really didn't want to put it down. Fortunately!!! it doesn't try to do too much but I really enjoyed how McFarlane brings in new characters, strengthens others and let's the whole shebang coalesce into a bizarre yet still acceptably believable story-line! The writing is smooth and it flows well, and I'd also add that his beta readers seem to be a good bunch because if I found any errors, well, I've already forgotten them! Plus I enjoyed being on other planets for a while and how we worked out getting back to Earth without having to make my brain bleed with any convuluted 'hard' scifi that would have been totally out of place here! Top-notch, highly entertaining 'softer' scifi for sure! And that's not just the brain parasites talking....

Enjoy!

Book two

Mistakes: I found three. A bouncing Betty turned into an m16, shooting people with a .22 caliber gun, even with a reduced powder shot is arguably more dangerous than a high powered round as the bullet has a tendency to not go through a person and instead bounce around inside them. Dr Macalester is supposed to have his brain turn to mush if he experienced a lot of pain. He gets shot but his brain doesn’t turn to mush.

Plot: Returning home to fight the invasion.

Characters: The surgeon is all over the place emotionally.

Don't bother reading.

Don't bother reading. Here's a bunch of stupid stuff I couldn't get over:

-The wannabe Army/Vietnam Vet lingo makes you cringe hard.
-AJ will not STOP remarking on Jaynes body through most interactions. Gotta love that adorable Vietnam era misogyny. I guess.
-Relationships between characters are lame and forced.
-Australian former-soldier wanting to have sex with an alligator-looking alien? Talks in phrases that make me think the only Aussie the author has ever seen was Steve Irwin. Seriously WTF.
-"Pairing" of the good aliens to a human is apparently difficult to find a suitable match psychologically as well as biologically, but find a bunch of southern rednecks that would likely follow Q-Anon, suddenly there's no question! Perfect match! Oh wait, one owns swampland and sets up illegal and unethical literal deathtraps for trespassers (because there's so many people after a 70yo man's crappy cabin smh)... So...great idea giving them these powers.
-Lefty naming his good alien rider "Rebel"? Just wow. There's more Good Ol Boy bs.
-Main chars steal some guy's hicopter off of his farm. He's ALSO a vet, but they don't care, don't take time to explain properly, and they even tie him up. Suddenly this victim is supposed to care that AJ has a look on his face? "I've seen that look before" as if there's some sudden Veteran-comraderie between them. Dude, this guy worries what you're gonna do to his family, he doesn't care about your plight. More wannabe veteran SUPER cringe.
-They talk in depth about capturing Korgul and putting them in tiny cells for absolutely no reason. Everyone just stomps on them immediately.
-The antidote/virus stuff is confusing and sounds like it was a rush before a book deadline or something. Get an antidote, but don't get vaccinated, but also get a virus....I think? WTF?

I read the first two, but I will not be reading the third. All in all this series so far is terrible.

The finale is so lackluster I didn't even notice I was at 98% in the book. I thought I still had more to go because it was boring.

Not a fan. Not much detail, the story seems rushed, and nothing in the story seems truly dire as the main characters aren't exactly fighting against human extinction.

I was going to say how this was a rehashing of an old story that's been told many times, and how this version wasn't even all that good of a retelling, and point readers to better versions of the story titled by other books, but you know what? It's been only a few hours since I finished reading the story, and honestly, I can't remember a thing about the story. Yeah, it was that generic. I'm not going to read anymore in this series. Ok, after straining my memory for a few minutes, I remembered that if you've read Robert Heinlein's puppet masters, then you've already read this story. Bracket the puppet masters into any number of generic junkyard tales where a group of folks take a junked ship and escape, then drop the puppetmasters in at that point, and you've basically got this story in a nutshell. Boring, and not worth the read in my opinion, but if you're not a Heinlein fan, or you've not read the puppetmasters, or you've not seen the startrek episode with the aliens controlling starfleet personnel, or you've not seen the original aliens, then you might enjoy this tale, otherwise, you'd be better off reading another book on your to read shelf.

A little more confusing than the first, still solid

I was so excited to keep reading this series that I actually signed up for kindle unlimited. They got me!

Overall, the story is great. Unlike the first book however, there’s no slow lead up to the action. You are thrown head first into a conflict, and one wrong move could cause our heroes to lose the war against the invaders. The problem? AJ and the crew need to get back to Earth first.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book. We were introduced to new alien species, and followed along on a good old fashioned, high stakes game of chase. Relationships continue to form, and new people added new dimensions to the team. Things get a little hairy in the second half of the book- too many new characters are introduced, and I had a hard time keeping everyone straight. There was also less of my favorite tiny princess Beverly in this novel, which reduced the humor in the novel, and made it feel very serious. Still, a solid entry, and I’m on to the next one.

Earth must be removed from Korgul occupation

Albert Jenkins and his fellow Viet Nam vet Darnell are determined to get the Korgul off Earth. But they're going to need a few things first. And those few things weren't on Earth. With the help of their Beltigersk riders they take to space for a few supplies and to make some new friends.
Each chapter brings new characters and new depth to old characters, who aren't all that old anymore. The characters ride the storyline like a cowboy rides a plug - always looking to.get bucked off. A few twists, some thin lines and some lines crossed a bit. Nothing out of line, except the sand it crosses. Intense acfion and great dialog complete to make a great read. And there's got to be more. Right?

Seeing the same issue with this as the last book. An advanced species made a space ship with unbound easily accessed hand controls that can easily push the ship far beyond its intended acceleration thresholds? For real? Sorry but that was an unnecessary bit of poor writing just to add drama where plenty already existed. Still continuing with the story though. We'll see if this matches the first books 2 stars, surpasses it for 3, or falls completely short in my particular opinion.

Yep, did not make it to the end. Too many opinions and seriously far out ideas presented as absolutes... Just... poor writing in my opinion.

This book kept the same energy as the previous book in the series, "Junkyard Pirate". So... if you liked that book (and I did) then you will also like this one.

The story: A. J. must find a way to return to Earth and either warn them of the invasion of Earth, or actually stop the aliens with a little help from his friends and the US military. (FYI, they are treating the invasion as if it were a virus. Given the circumstances as presented in the book, that seems reasonable.)

The book ends with a reasonable opening for a sequel.

Much better than the first book. The plot was much much better. I also received the characters a little better but I still wanted less grouse. The climax seemed to wrap up pretty fast. The Epilogue did leave me wondering what became of most of the major supporting characters. However improbable and believable this story was pretty good.

Well now I see there are 3 more books in the series so I guess we'll have to suppose that the major supporting characters still have roles to play. I am not thrilled to slog through more grousing so it will be a while before I return to this series.

damn good story

I love the new characters, and the development of the original ones too. I would be happy to live in the Vred’s hidden cove anytime. (Not Lefty’s Georgia swamp though) Thrilling plot twists, good combat scenes, and a satisfying ending.

My editorial eye did pick up a couple of discontinuities, as if some text had
Been left out of the Kindle version accidentally, and I noticed a couple of typos, but overall it is a fine story indeed.

I look forward to the next one!

Excellent

It had been some time since I read Junkyard Pirate so I reread it so I would have continuity in the series. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to read it first. You will not be disappointed. The author has cleverly introduced aliens and bonded them with vets in a very entertaining fashion. This sequel was very good, wrapped up the storyline and introduced the possibility of further adventures with the characters. I highly recommend this series.

Consistent methodology

I have read this series as well as the authors Pirate series. They are a fast dependably enjoyable read. The author has a predictable formula for his stories that introduces plot and characters in a relatable way and it is readily recognizable from book to book. His characters are recognizable if not predictable and his familiarity with military protocols and his challenges with women become a positive pattern that for me make him a err enjoyable read.

Great series

This was the first series I've read by this author but it definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed these two books they contained everything I like in a good sci-fi story, good verses evil, a tight knit crew, a little bit of romance, and best of all the characters in the book seemed human and by that I mean that they don't do everything perfectly, they make mistakes and say the wrong things at times, they come off as real people not some superhero types.

So I didn't like this one as much as the last but it still was really good.

Starts out serious and without the humor of the first book. Some of the humor comes back as the scene changes and new characters come into play. Later in the book the action takes over and the humor again fades. This book was action packed as the crew is trying to get back to Earth and fight off the Korgal from depleting the Earth and using unsuspecting Earthlings. Still a very good read and I cannot wait for the 3rd.

Super fun universe and characters

This is a super fun universe and characters. There is a lot of action, there are multiple alien races, planet escapades, and lots of other fun. Plus there is a dog, who doesn’t like a dog. This is a universe that would be fun to visit, and I am glad there is another book after this to continue the adventures. I recommend this book and series.

Good read, with a little to much USA jingoism

While it's a good novel it's still predictable in to many ways, for some reason in every movie TV show and book about aliens landing on earth, for some reason they always land in the USA, considering that these aliens all seem to have a global government, and that the largest population concentrations tend to be near the capital city, China or India would be more likely.

A Fun Read

AJ and his friends try for relief from the Galactic Council, but run into red tape and that that look to stall the question of human sentience for many years. AJ and his crew go back to Earth and fight to kick the alien invaders out. I like the action, humor, and romance. The budding romance between AJ and Jayne is fun. I look forward to the next book.

Fun reading book

Interesting story and book. At various times I got confused and lost track of what was going on. But it is a good fun book to read. I kinda hope this is not the end of the story.

I won't tell you all that happens, you need to read yourself. Aliens, space ships, good military sci fi. Worth your time.

Excellent

Loved this book! As an old vet, this was lots of fun having the knowledge and experience of age in the body of you pup! AN and his crew set about saving the world from an invasion that few know is happening. Doc and AJ, with the help of a group of old warriors kick ass and take names!

Swashbuckling fun

This pair of books kept me laughing as a couple of old geezers become young again through the biomagic of alien infection and save the earth from evil bad aliens . There is even an expansion to other old geezers, and an unexpected romance and even a dog. Great upside fun reading!

An unusual alien story, well worth a read

An unusual alien story, well worth a read.
I wavered a little after the first book but this was excellent. Good to see stories around individuals develop. Overall a really good read, juat a shame I had interruptions as I wanted to read it in one sitting.

Jamie McFarlane combines a hidden Alien Invasion, with both good and bad, and very much flawed human and alien characters, Interstellar intrigue, and some interesting and quirky story concepts. Pulling from his extensive and well-established writing background the author has brought forth another engrossing and lovely book.

The 2nd book in the series continues the saga of the fight for Earth’s liberation. I enjoyed the character developments and interactions. An increased cast was introduced in Old Dogs and I enjoyed their contribution to the mission. Looking forward to reading about my friends’ antics and successes in book 3.

Tricks or smarts

This is the best continuous story line you will find in along time. From book one you find your self wrapped up with these great characters and their problems. Through his style of writing the author has made you sit on the edge of your chair finding it hard to put the book done. There is always something more you want to know in each sentence.

Alien Reinvasion

What if there was a war and nobody noticed? AJ muses over the answer and compares it with hid return from Vietnam to a less than stellar welcome. So we survived an alien invasion (the bad guys looked like snot and the good guys look like ants). So I guess maybe I did miss the war part.

An entertaining, if somewhat predictable, space adventure featuring our Vietnam vet crew of protagonists. Don't read this with any expectations of hard scifi content! This is geared to entertain an audience of a 'certain age' who can empathize with the heroes who are in their 70's. There are some parallels with Scalzi's 'Old Man's War' but without the military overlay. A fun read.

McFarlane keeps the plot moving and the action only gets better as you go along. Unpretentious n writing that really pulls the reader right into the storyline. Well done! More please.

I would recommend this one to all who want to escape their day and battle the aliens that have infected millions. Love this author.
