Sammi Cee was raised in a family of readers. Summer vacations consisted of a good book while sitting lakeside from as far back as she could remember. After growing up and having her own children, her appreciation of how the written word could transport you on an adventure, bring you to tears, or give you hope, took on a whole new meaning.

These days Sammi is watching her children develop into fine young ladies while doing the things she enjoys most: drinking coffee, eating chocolate, and writing her own stories.

Darren is hot but annoying, he tells himself. He always has a million questions and he’s clingy and needy (his ex’s words, the clingy needy part, not the questions because that’s a fact dang he has a lot).

He’s twenty-six and lives at home with his feisty loving mom, who the best!

Drinking at a bar Darren sees the most beautiful and dangerous-looking guy step in. Darren tries to have a conversation with him but he gets ignored by the big guy. Nothing new here, his self-esteem is already below zero, just when he walks away the guy grabs his wrist and talks to him.

Even though Darren is quite annoying with Darren’s incessant chatter and millions of questions, Cyrus sees also the gentle side of him and the wounded.

Why does he want to protect him? ugh!

Darren is witnessing Cyrus doing his ‘job’ as ‘judge, juror, and executioner’ in the alley and now Cyrus has to keep him safe and protect him against… you’ll understand read it yourself 🙂

Darren can’t leave his side and ha! He doesn’t want to, he’s smitten by Cyrus.

“A storm was coming, but it wasn’t weather-related.”

With the approach of danger Cyrus and Darren retreat to Darren’s home and mother.

I laughed, I snorted, I spilled coffee, it was all so extremely funny. It’s a sort of a dark story but it isn’t at all. It’s feisty and witty, you got to love the little human and his endearing demon.

It’s an awesomely written story, entertaining, engaging and thrilling at the same time.

The realms are creative just like the plot, I loved the story and characters (except one of course) Both Darren and Cyrus are so lovable, let’s not forget to mention Darren’s mom ha!

It was an extremely enjoyable narrative!

All’s well that ends well… I didn’t expect anything else, duh!

Crossroads

Ok, I freaking love Cy but I’m with Blondie, he absolutely needs a new couch. Oh, and Darren’s mom, she’s awesome but I’m also just a teensy bit terrified by her. “Since I met you, every day is more perfect than the one before it. I will always strive to make you happy...” Gah, I adore everything about Cyrus and Darren. From the way they met, to Darren’s inquisitiveness and Cy’s protectiveness, to their mutual devotion and love, and even to the crossroads they found themselves at, it all thrilled me. I’d travel to the ends of the realm for them and more. I definitely need more of this amazing world and the characters in it *cough Erlick* and put out this wish for a sexy henchman of my own.

This was truly an enjoyable read. I just loved Darren and his quite talkative personality. I really wish there was more since I really wanted to see this relationship grow. The story was unique and the humor was so fun. The writing was excellent and I definitely want more, please.

What do you get when you match an evil soul sucking demon up with a quirky talkative human? A great story.
I really enjoyed Henchman's Mate. While complete opposites Cyrus and Darren are really a perfect match.
This sweet, funny romance is such a fun read.

Very sweet

I liked that this was the poor guy who went out on a date from the Shipping our Loves book and was brought up by mom. This was instalove fated mate and had very little sexytimes. Darren and Cy were great.

I would love more books set in this demon world.

I couldn’t have dreamed you into existence because I didn’t even know I needed you. You must have been sent to me.” ~ Kamand Kojouri

To say that Darren, of ‘Henchman’s Mate’ by Sammi Cee and Britany Cournoyer, is unlucky in love is an understatement. It seems that every relationship he is in falls apart. Darren longs for someone to love him for who he is, he just doesn’t expect his “Romeo” to come in the form of a demon.

Cyrus was hoping to have more time before he was prematurely pressed into service by his ambitious and not so forthcoming father. Now his days are filled with seeking out people with black souls in order to act as judge, juror, and executioner. He is tired, tired of living in a dump, constantly having to prowl around at night to feed on the negativity and evil that exists in his victims. He is lonely but doesn’t have time to acknowledge it much less act upon it. Other than quickies with nameless, faceless men, he has no contact with humans or anyone else for that matter. That is until he runs into Darren.

Cyrus is not even sure why he is even listening to the little twink; there is something incomprehensible about his attraction to the man. Any other time, Cyrus would be able to simply walk away but with Darren, he feels compelled to stay. And why does he feel this intense need to protect the man? Cyrus is not there to be with Darren. He has a target. It just so happens to be one of Darren’s ex-boyfriends. When Cyrus takes the man outside with him and does his thing – which is to proclaim his mark’s sins before sucking his soul from his body – he is unaware that Darren has followed him outside and witnesses the entire event.

When Cyrus realizes that Darren has witnessed the judgment, he knows he has a real problem. From what he has been told, Darren needs to be eliminated, but he can’t bring himself to do so. Especially since Darren, instead of being terrified, thinks what he did was frightening, but fitting. His urge to protect Darren goes into overdrive. He is not entirely sure why, but Cyrus knows that he must protect Darren at all costs, so he does the only thing he can think of to do. He takes him home with him. Even though Darren is given opportunities to escape, he never does. Things continue for a while with Cyrus catering to Darren, even taking him to work with him since it is the only way he can protect him all the time. He is still amazed that Darren isn’t terrified of him. One night, while Cyrus is asleep, he has a nightmare. Darren takes a chance and climbs into bed with him. When Cyrus wakes up with Darren so close to him, he has a startling epiphany; the reason he feels so protective toward Darren is that Darren is his mate!

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to admit that this is not the type of book I usually read. However, I was attracted by the cover and once I started reading it, was so taken by the characters and the plot that I didn’t want to stop. The humor, although dark, is hilarious. Darren is adorable if not occasionally annoying in his quest for knowledge. The banter between Cyrus and Darren is so funny. Darren’s total lack of fear and disdain for what Cyrus does is unfathomable, but convenient considering they are lovers. Darren’s mother was the ultimate mama bear. I loved her for her loyalty to Darren and Cyrus by extension. Thanks, Sammi and Britany! I’m hoping that Erlick will get his own story soon.

You know how you hear about heroines who are too stupid to live? It's not generally a problem I come across in books. Perhaps I have a generous nature and allow that people can make mistakes or that they're approaching situations from different perspectives than the reader and therefore make choices we disagree with. But Darren? Darren is seriously too stupid to live.

He meets Cy in a club. Describes him as 'the most dangerous specimen I'd ever seen'. Cy makes it clear that he's not interested in Darren and Darren 'accepts' that but continues to chatter away to him. The bartender warns him away from Cy, but he pays no attention. Then Darren witnesses Cy kill a man outside the club. Not only does Cy kill the other man, but he transforms into a demon to do so. When Cy realises that Darren has seen him, he says 'Come with me if you want to live'. Okay, not in those actual words. He actually says 'If you want to stay alive, you need to come with me' but it was funnier in the pseudo Terminator voice I imagined in my head. And yes, the author(s) does make a Terminator reference later in the book.

So you've got a guy who looks 'tall, dark, and scary' (and yes, that's a quote), who just transformed into a demon and killed a guy, saying 'Come with me if you want to live'. So what does Darren do? He gets in the car and goes with him. I mean, seriously??

Darren has the presence of mind to think 'I should call my mum and tell her who I'm with and where I am, in case anything bad happens'. Oh wait, no, he doesn't. He thinks 'If I don't come home, my mum will worry and send the cops out to look for me and they might arrest this really nice man who has done nothing wrong'. I just...can't. So Cy takes Darren's phone. At this point, Darren should be shitting himself, but he's not. He's just like 'If you're going home to sleep, I'm gonna be so bored because I can't read my book on my Kindle app now that you've taken my phone.' I paraphrased.

Even Cy doesn't understand Darren's naivety. 'You watched me kill a man not half-an-hour ago, and it's your accommodations that have you unhinged. Do you not fear me?' But of course Darren is too stupid to live and of course he doesn't fear Cy the killer demon. Le sigh.

The book goes on in this vein, until eventually Cy takes Darren back to Darren's home a number of days later. During this time, Cy has been texting Darren's mother so she won't worry, but he hasn't given Darren back his phone. Oh, and Darren has had multiple opportunities to leave, but hasn't, because, you know, why would he? Anyway, apparently Darren's mother found it obvious that it wasn't Darren texting her because Cy texts differently. Was she worried that her son disappeared and some random stranger was pretending to be her son and telling her that her son was fine and not to worry? No, of course not! Obviously he was fine and she shouldn't worry. Seriously, what the fuck??! I can see where Darren gets it from at least.

There were some good components to the book, such as the dream meetings, the father's plans, the other demon and so forth. But none of that was enough to make up for not one but two characters who were too stupid to live. Two stars.

Do Not Miss This Captivating Story.

I was captured by this story from the first paragraph and was never released. That made me happy. I was intrigued by the universe the authors created. The blurb sounded like a dark book. It is not. It is story of love. I could visualize Darren in his club clothes walking beside Cy who made the terminator look happy, talkative and well dressed in comparison. I want more of them and their friends. The only thing wrong with this book was that I was sorry when it ended.

Fated Mates is definitely not my trope of choice but something drew me to this description and I had a hankering for a paranormal romance so here we are. It actually really hit the spot and despite Darren being A Lot I got pretty fond of the both of them by the end of it, not to mention some interesting worldbuilding that kept me engaged.

4.25 Stars!

I really enjoyed this story and didn't want to set it down until I knew how it ended. Initially, I wasn't too sure if I was going to like Darren, but he grew on me. Cyrus was hard to get a feel for, but his protectiveness of Darren while totally bewildered by him was fun. I liked that it was a slow build up as they try to sort out their situation. I liked how everything changes for Cyrus once he realizes Darren is his mate and tries his best to be what Darren needs.

I hope we might get another book set in this world featuring Erlick at some point. I liked him and was happy to see him helping Cyrus out when he needed it the most. I do wish we had a better sense of just what Cyrus's father had been planning and more about Asphodel, but maybe we will find out more if the authors decide to make this into a series.

cw: racism, misogyny, classism/white privilege

dnf @ 61%

ugh. solid potential here, some good writing, but far too much dependence on tropes. like I love a tropey story as much as the next person but if the tropes are all you’ve got, I’d rather not. this talkative/silent type pairing is clearly meant to channel the archetypes of alice winters but without the heart of those characters. the twink’s trauma is weirdly inconsistent—not “humans are messy” inconsistent but “oops the author forgot / didn’t check coherence when pasting in a new section”inconsistent.

also — while I love the idea of a fated mates pairing that isn’t insta-love, I’m super grossed out by the way Cyrus’s inner monologue seems to be “I hate you and want to double down on all the horrible things that terrible people have said to try and make you smaller but you’re my mate so instead I’ll just think them and we can bang” which I gotta say is NOT remotely romantic. I’m ok with them not liking each other to start. I’m not ok with the only reason Cyrus starts liking Darren being the realisation Darren is his mate. legit ruins the whole “fated-mates but not insta-love” to have it just be on hold until they *realise* they’re mates.

that’s not even getting into the REAMS of unpacked and extremely toxic internalised misogyny the author has based Darren’s entire characterisation on. or the blatant racism. or the equating poverty with evil/dirtiness. like. unpack your shit people.

I absolutely adored Darren and Cy!

I first read the shorter version of this book and hoped that it would be extended into a full HEA story - I am so, so happy that it was. This book is amazing. Darren is a total cutie (Erlick is right about that) and Cy, with all his stern grumpiness, is adorable.

The world building is great - you get enough information without it being an info dump. I would love to see more of Cy and Erlick’s home realm and I really, really hope we get another book in this world (Erlick needs his own mate).

This is a lovely grumpy loves sunshine (very talkative, inquisitive sunshine). Darren’s rambling and constant questions was so perfect for Cy’s stern grumpiness - you could see how slowly Darren made Cy feel a little bit more until he was finally able to enjoy being free to love. I have to admit, whilst the story between them was low-angst, what happened to Cy was so awful. My heart broke for him - I’m so glad he’s found his people.

I highly recommend this. It’s an interesting world with a beautiful story about lovely, quirky characters. Fingers crossed there is more to come in this world!

This was such a sweet and adorable story about a grumpy demon henchman and a sunshiny, happy slightly annoying human :) I had to do a quick fact check because Darren sounded so familiar. It turns out that Darren, the human, is the same Darren from Sammi Cee's Shipping Our Loves story. He was the obnoxious dude that turned off Davis and Conrad when they were looking for a third. Darren mentions that incident with his mother and she quickly has to school him on how his behavior was just obnoxious. I love her personality so much because it's obvious she loves her son so much :) Cyrus the demon henchman is grumpy, snarly, and sucks the souls out of evil humans. When he meets Darren, he's annoyed and confused why the blonde, small human isn't afraid of him but their banter eases them both into the beginning of an unusual relationship as fated mates. This was a short and sweet story expanded from its original version. What's really amazing is the fact that both authors leave some Easter eggs for everyone to enjoy. The dynamic duo strikes again :) I love their team-ups!

This was so so for me. I liked Darren and Cyrus for the most part but felt like none of their reactions were relatable. I understand we have to suspend belief, hello, soul sucking demon and all. But I didn’t really connect with either character fully.

I liked Darren for his vulnerability. It can’t be easy going through life being told you are too much to handle all the time. And I felt for Cy, who always thought he had to do his duty and nothing else. I even enjoyed the sides characters of Susanne and Erlick. But all the ingredients just didn’t add up to a wonderful meal for me.

Just because this wasn’t my cup of tea, doesn’t mean it won’t be yours. Give it a go, it might be right up your alley.

This is a really enjoyable read. The storyline is unique and fun and not too dark at all. Cy and Darren are both so different yet loveable all the same. I adored Darren and his non-stop chatter and curious nature. He keeps getting hurt by guys who think he’s too clingy and talks too much. But when he meets Cy, there’s only fond exasperation and a fierce need to protect him. Cy is a grumpy loner and after he “kidnaps” Darren - to protect him, of course - his life suddenly becomes much brighter. Together, they discover what the pull between them truly means and following this, nothing can keep them apart - not even true evil!

Darren is a human full of questions. Seriously, he doesn’t shut up. Cyrus is a soul eater, for a lack of a better term. When they first meet there is a connection between the two but it takes until the end of the short before Cyrus realizes they’re mates. When Darren stumbles upon Cyrus sucking out his ex-boyfriend’s evil soul, Cyrus doesn’t have a choice but to bring Darren to his place. This book ends with me going, “but but but, what’s going to happen now!!” I hope we get a book continuing their story. I’d love to get a HEA.

Cy is a soul sucking demon, raised to rid the human world of evil souls who have gone uncaught by the justice system. Darren is a gorgeous twink, unable to turn his dates into a relationship. Then Darren sees Cy at work, sucking down the soul of Darren's awful ex. In order to protect the human, Cy kidnaps him.
Cy is used to living in silence and Darren is an unstoppable chatterbox. Cy's place is a dive and Darren is wary of even sitting on the couch. It's a fifty fifty chance they may kill each other before Cy realizes that Darren is his mate.
This was an incredibly sweet, fun read.

I love this book...no two ways about it. Darren is completely extra in a way that's just adorable and Cy is a no nonsense, absolutely
no frills demon; the perfect grumpy foil to Darren's perennial sunshine.

The Hangman's Mate isn't a particularly long book, but the author's manage to fit in a great amount of world building to set the scene for some really good back story for Cy and his family, as well as some demon-based action in an overall plot which is pact in all the right places and a little slower when you need it to be, i.e. when Darren is working on working his way under Cy's (very thick) demon skin...not literally!

For me, this is an instant addition to my re-read list: a thoroughly enjoyable opposites attract, fated mates PNR story.

Really enjoyed this book. Liked Darren’s quirky talkative nature. His thirst for knowledge and his endless curiosity. I liked how Cy/Cerberus had a tough outer shell due to his job but his softening ways as he spent more time with Darren. Especially liked the concept of Cy’s job something different and wouldn’t it be nice to take evil souls of the streets like that! Will reread and hope to see Erlick’s book.

I am a huge fan of both authors separately but when they joined forces together the result is just so good. I enjoyed a lot Cyrus and Darren’s story, it was a blast witnessing, Darren’s sweetness and happy nature and Cyrus’s grumpiness and snarky demeanor and specially their scenes with Susanne. This is one of the best book I’d read this year and I loved every single moment of it. I hope we got more books following this, can I ask for Erlick's story? Pretty please with a cherry an a lot of sugar on top?

I absolutely loved this book and the wonderful and captivating characters. Cyrus, was a soul (only truly evil souls) sucking demon, and Darren (who was hilarious) was his quirky mate. I enjoyed the personality that the authors put into each character and the writing style was simply excellent. I wish this was a series because I'd definitely read it. This was a different type of fated mates story but it was intense and lots of fun. Very riveting and entertaining read.

If I could I would give this book at least a 7.5. I absolutely loved it. The storyline was interesting--a different type of m/m romance, but what made the book so special to me was the humor--I spent much of my time doing my Cubii laughing out loud. Darren and his mom were both hoots, by Cy was in a class all his own with his obliviousness of all things human. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Sweet and Funny!

Cyrus and Darren had quite a love story. Their meet cute was intense and from there, it just became more intense. The humor laced into the story was awesome and Darren finally finding someone and Cyrus finding a family with Darren was sweet. A fun paranormal romance!

Cyrus and Darren's story is so sweet! This is definitely some I haven't read yet with a soul suckimg demon. I just love this unique storyline. These two are definitely opposite of each other but I just can't help how much these two are perfect for each other. Sammi Cee and Brittany Cournoyer has made a funny and sweet story with such an unique relationship that I just love. Love it so much!

This was a fun read. Darren was adorable with his ever running mouth and infinite questions. Cyrus was his complete opposite, silent and grunting out answers. They were so, so cute together.

This story was short, but it managed to have everything: very interesting characters, a buildup, romance, heat, hilarious interaction and danger.

Pick it up, you won't regret it.

Fun read

I usually don’t read books on demons, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. But since I follow the authors, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. The chemistry between Cy and Darren were sometimes laugh out loud moments, and I didn’t put the book down until I finished it. I can’t wait to read what’s next.
