Five Days with the Enemy

Amber leaves a college scholarship when she discovers her father keeping secrets. But, instead of facing long-standing family issues, she rolls the dice on Josh and agrees to help her ex- with a crazy scheme. Josh has five days to “keep his legs” or his bookie comes collecting.

It takes heart, determination, and quite a bit of convincing for Amber to climb into the truck with Josh and help him earn enough money to pay off the hard-nosed loan shark before thugs come after him. But, being trapped in a car together stirs up a murky past, and threatens to expose the lies they’ve both been running from.

Jump in the back of the pick-up while we go for a ride in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario. Watch Amber and Josh rock and roll through penny-pinching adventures, odd jobs, and making every cent count!

Growing up in Ontario, Canada, MJ was the only child of a single mom. MJ’s passion for the arts ignited at a young age as she wrote adventure stories and read them aloud to close family and friends. The dramatic arts became a focus in high school as an aid to understanding character motivation in her writing. Majoring in Theatre Production at University, with a minor in English, she went on to teach both elementary and high school for 10 years throughout Simcoe County.

MJ currently lives with her husband and son in Ontario, Canada. She keeps busy these days writing, helping Indie Authors, and talking about books as a local librarian. She firmly believes that if she hadn’t been born a Virgo, she would not be half as organized as necessary to accomplish everything in her daily agenda.

When I read flawed attraction romances, I start out asking why the protagonist doesn’t just walk away, hit the road, ditch the loser. So, I put my cynic’s hat on and leap in wondering ‘Can the author seriously get these two together without one or the other coming out looking like a fool?’
In Vice Ride, by MJ Moores, protagonist, Amber, finds herself drawn into a problem with her totally over-and-done-with, kicked-to-the-curb ex-boyfriend, Josh. She helps him, even though he was pretty nasty to her during the breakup. But she makes it clear that this help comes on her terms. She has tenacity and a take charge attitude that brings out her strength of character and her compassion. She sets the standards for Josh and although he marches to her tune, he eventually takes charge of his life and shows his inner strength.
Once the secrets between them have surfaced and been resolved, Amber discovers the one big secret Josh has been keeping from everyone—the one that now stands between them. Bringing this couple together, while keeping the story’s credibility intact, is done with the finesse that only a skilled writer, like Moores, can accomplish.
The setting, the Algonquin region of Ontario, is breathtaking and along with the tension and tight writing, the reader is lured in.
There are so many great things I’d like to say about the ending, but I don’t want to give it away. Let me just say... the ending is satisfying on so many levels.
Just one minor flaw, seems like the novel should have been given another pass through by a copy editor.
A wonderful read for YA and flawed romance lovers.
