dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache
Der dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache behandelt Geschichte, Aufbau und Systematik unserer Sprache. In einer übersichtlichen Einführung erläutert er Grundsätzliches zu Sprache, Wort, Lautbildung und Schrift. Zusätzlich zeichnet der Text mit Hilfe zahlreicher Grafiken die Sprachentwicklung vom Indogermanischen bis zum Neuhochdeutschen nach und verdeutlicht die verschiedenen Sprachbeziehungen.
Damit ist der Atlas nicht nur ein kompetentes Grundlagenwerk für Sprachwissenschaftler und alle an der deutschen Sprachgeschichte und -entwicklung interessierten Leser. Auch jene Menschen, die sich z.B. nach einem Umzug beim Bestellen des Handwerkers oder beim Einkauf in der Bäckerei nicht verstanden fühlen, finden in den Mundartkarten die regional jeweils "richtige" Bezeichnung für z.B. "Klempner" oder "Brötchen".
Damit ist der Atlas nicht nur ein kompetentes Grundlagenwerk für Sprachwissenschaftler und alle an der deutschen Sprachgeschichte und -entwicklung interessierten Leser. Indeed, Walter König’s Dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache (originally published in 1978) is a vastly informative linguistic lexicon which provides and presents an amazingly extensive general overview of and for the German language (and all in a handy and therefore also immensely portable paperback format at that, and yes, this very portability certainly did manage to be a major personal godsend when I was making use of dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache when I was preparing for my first comprehensive exam in 1996 at the University of Waterloo, since unlike ALL of the other books I was using for studying, dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache was in fact light enough in weight and small enough in circumference to fit into a standard coat or jacket pocket, meaning that I could easily carry the book on my person to peruse Walter König’s featured text wherever and whenever, including in the woods taking a walk or while waiting in line whist grocery shopping).
Covering a multitude of relevant, essential language based themes (from historical linguistics to the different German dialects and their often extremely diverse and specific vocabularies), dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache is an enlightening and usable reference guide and language learning tool, and actually not only for students of linguistics either, but really for anyone interested in the German language, its history, grammatical forms and the like. However, because dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache is presented, is penned entirely in German, a good if not actually a borderline academic level of fluency in the German language is most definitely both suggested and in my humble opinion also required, albeit I do actually believe that Walter König does not ever render his text as overly and artificially complicated, but that well, the thematic language and linguistic based nature of dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache does kind of feature a text that is by necessity not all that simple.
And finally, there is one extremely minor but still a bit personally frustrating issue with dtv-Atlas Deutsche Sprache, insofar that the font size of the printed words is incredibly small (even quite minuscule), which might well make reading ease a bit of a challenge for those of us with less than stellar eyesight, but this is also very likely unavoidable and as such the nature of the proverbial beast (due to the fact that a lot of linguistic information needed to be included in only 247 pages).

Great work! It explains the dialectal differences in the German language and shows very detailed maps with the various forms used throughout the German-speaking region. Also other sociolinguistical and historical maps are included. And excellent book if you're interested in where certain variations are used.

Le succès de la série des "dtv-Atlas" ne se dément pas, grâce à son ingénieux système: une page graphique (cartes, statistiques, schémas etc.) face à une page de texte (en caractères tellement minuscules qu'il faut au moins une loupe, voire un microscope), et tout ceci bien avant l'invention de Powerpoint.
J'en possède plusieurs de la série, mais avec celui consacré à la langue allemande, c'est bien la première fois que je lis un ouvrage de référence de bout en bout. Étant de formation romaniste, mais non point germaniste, je me suis passionnée pour cet aperçu succinct de l'évolution de la langue allemande. J'ai bien aimé aussi que Werner König signale les points qui continuent à faire débat dans les milieux académiques. La structure claire du livre permet d'y revenir à tout moment, ce qui en fait un ouvrage essentiel dans la bibliothèques du prof de langues.
