Remaining Aileen was a seriously delightful read.

Personally, I loved how vampirism was handled in this book. I love the slightly different take on lore, I love the complications (wanting to eat your husband?!), even the delicacy of motherhood was handled with grace (wanting to eat your kids?!).

The best part? Lindsey weaves the supernatural so seamlessly with the everyday. Even as a vampire, Aileen holds onto her human problems: coffee addiction, marital openness, and body image. Even as a vampire, she's a mom. She's me and you and every one of us flocking to Target to get a sugary caffeine boost and leaving with everything but what we came for.

Lindsey's writing was superb and transported me to somewhere I had never been but now feels like home. From Silver Lake to Aileen's beautiful home to the sprawling fields, I can see and hear and feel these places without ever leaving my living room. The characters were incredibly well rounded and every one of them felt as real to me as my own family. I've never had little girls, but I can relate on a spiritual level to the "play with me!" mentality of young ones.

I can say for certain that we haven't seen the last of debut author, Autumn Lindsey.

And I need the sequel.
Like now.
Seriously.

Aileen's a mom like any other. She faces unscalable mountains of laundry and tries not to look too long in the mirror at a body she has trouble recognizing. Unlike other moms, Aileen survives a plane crash to face immortality—with all its side effects. Can she embrace the monster she's become and still be the mother and wife she once was?

Remaining Aileen blends women's fiction with a bite of paranormal to produce a metaphorical vintage genre that works. Who knew vampires made the perfect metaphor for moms? Autumn Lindsey sure did! Not only does she bring readers to a deeper level with her fiction, she leaves them wanting more. No spoilers here, but I am already demanding book two.

Whenever the story grows dark or heavy, the author expertly weaves in humor and reality to keep the reader reaching for the page corners. She keeps in mind the details of ordinary mom life—like dishes and eating and getting just the right Halloween costume—while exploring all the challenges a vampire would face in those situations.

I will be entirely honest; I don't read a lot of paranormal books. However, I found the details about vampires to be fresh and unique to anything I've come across in the past. I also don't read a ton of women's fiction. For me, this was refreshing to take two genres I don't typically choose and find myself crying and laughing with the characters. Aileen is the ideal protagonist. She's flawed, but relatable. I want to have a moms' night out with her!

While I think any reader who appreciates a good tale with twists and turns tossed in will enjoy Remaining Aileen, I will be highly recommending it to all my fellow reader mamas.

DISCLAIMER: I received an e-ARC of this book from Magnolia Press in exchange for an honest review.

I love vampire books and Remaining Aileen was a homerun to me!

Aileen is struggling with surviving a plane crash that she knows she wasn’t meant to survive. Her family tries to help her cope but they have no idea what to make of her new behavior or the strange things that start to happen once she is safe at home. The transition of the wife and mother she was before the accident to who she is after is what makes this such a great story.

This book hit me right in the feels at many different times. Aileen’s battle to hold on to her humanity and come to terms with the new, terrifying life presented to her was a pleasure to read and could parallel so many real-life situations. I’m excited to see what will happen next with these characters and for future books from Autumn Lindsey with this as her debut.

Editorial Blurb:

REMAINING AILEEN is that perfect blend of heart-pumping suspense, unexpected humor, and bittersweet and beautiful truth. Aileen's struggle to figure out who--and what--she is as both a vampire and a mother, is poignant, and the love she holds for her family versus the reality of what she's become will rip apart your heart and then mend it back together a dozen times over. This book shook me--in the best possible way--proving that debut novelist Autumn Lindsey is a force to be reckoned with.

Remaining Aileen was the perfect blend of intrigue, heart, and humour.

The imagery was eerily beautiful and pulled me through the story- from Aileen's fateful trip, her struggles to recover, her transformation, and into her new existence. I enjoyed how the paranormal details found a place in the contemporary world as Aileen learns the truth behind how she survived the plane crash that should have killed her and the reality of melding her new fate with her old life. Even the setting details walk the line between mythical and familiar, woven together to create a new world.

Even through the struggles of discovering her new reality and all the changes immortality brings Aileen remains a mom- loving her family, battling insecurities, and pouring another cup of coffee to pull her through the day. Chilling descriptions and revelations balanced with humour made for a very entertaining read and a book hangover that I have yet to get over.

Let me start by saying Remaining Aileen isn't the genre I'd typically read. I gravitate towards horror titles bordering on thrillers. That being said, I'm so glad I chose this title. Remaining Aileen was a wonderful read. The concept was enticing--a mother's fallout from a devastating plane crash and the realization she has been saved by being changed into a vampire--the characters were well-developed and interesting, and on a personal level, I related to Aileen as a mother of young children trying to find an identity as a person outside the domestic sphere (while also navigating her new-found life as a vampire).

More than that, the imagery stuck with me for days. Hauntingly beautiful, sometimes terrifying descriptions that pulled me into Autumn Lindsey's world of vampires and mystery.

Quick read, beautiful images, highly recommend.

This book was compulsively readable, which was completely unexpected to me. Honestly, I picked it up because it was written by a local author. I found myself sucked in from page one, and read obsessively all day. Hence, I’m done within 24 hours, and now I’m waiting for more. When will book two be out??

A book about a vampire mom is not the norm…and I thoroughly loved that about Remaining Aileen. Every vampire book I’ve read or seen at the library is typically about unattached young adults who wrestle with love triangles, melodramatic friendships, and other topics from which I feel far removed. Remaining Aileen is the story of a young, married mother struggling to maintain her personal identity both before AND after becoming a vampire. I found this to be a compelling concept: Many of us moms wonder how we can nurture our pre-mother identities, while still being the caring parents we must to our little ones. Well, Remaining Aileen makes it clear that becoming a vampire just makes the issue of a mother’s identity a lot more difficult to navigate, and certainly interesting to read about.

Author Autumn Lindsey’s perspectives on marriage, motherhood, and the possibility of eternal life are honest, relatable, and well developed. I was very impressed by her characters’ dialogue, which feels realistic and natural.

My only qualm with the book is the number of editing errors (primarily missing punctuation, and run-on sentences). I truly believe an extra run-through from a copy-editor would have tightened this up considerably, and hope that will be possible with book two.

It's been awhile since I've read a book that I could really sink my teeth into! This book was outside my normal book genre, but I found myself relating to Aileen and it kept me turning pages. The story is able to take a tragedy and make it somehow okay and even humorous in parts. The clever metaphor that Autumn Lindsey creates reminds you to live each day to the fullest and don't lose yourself in the process. I was left craving more from the characters I had gotten to know and I truly hope that there is a sequel!

Remaining Aileen had me captivated from page one. Aileen is a relatable character from the start. Stretch marks, a Target wardrobe, a lovable yet slightly annoying mother-in-law, and a heaping dose of mom-guilt at the thought of leaving her children for some much-needed time away. Aileen is every mom. But even as she struggles with her new life as a vampire, I found bits of myself in Aileen and her life.

Remaining Aileen addresses the difficult and sometimes heart wrenching situation women find themselves in as we grapple with where we fit into the world, especially after becoming a mother. Constantly switching hats while trying to maintain a clear image of who we are and who we want to be.

As a perfectly balanced genre mash-up, Autumn Lindsey found a way to tackle deep, meaningful topics with beauty, humor, and an exciting page-turning plot.

Who knew a story about a vampire mom would be just what my heart needed right now?

Remaining Aileen takes a close look at how a typical mom's life drastically changes after she's transformed into a vampire. It's a kind of women's fiction novel, outlining both Aileen's physical and psychological transformation as she deals with heightened bodily powers and the dilemma of immortality. Throw in sweet children, a loyal husband, and sexy British vampire, and you've got a fun summer read. Written in energetic, focused prose, Remaining Aileen is a perfect Mother's Day gift for those who like Twilight and other paranormal stories!

One might find it hard to relate to a Mom that has become a vampire, but I have never found a character more relatable, or likable for that matter, than Autumn Lindsey's Aileen. We follow Aileen's struggle to cope with her new life as a vampire after a devastating plane crash, all the while attempting to keep this particular new attribute of herself a secret from her family. Autumn creates the perfect parallel in Aileen's journey to discover not only who, but what she is and the disconnect mothers can feel when they too, embark on their new journey of motherhood and attempt to adapt this new role into their existing lives. Autumn also gives us real conflict in the dynamic of Aileen's marriage and home, rather than the picture perfect fairy-tale of happily married couple. Because how can anything be a fairy-tale when a wife and mother is secretly lusting for her family's blood?

There were moments when I found myself on the verge of tears, particularly when Aileen thinks about her children before her imminent death. Autumn nearly killed me with the statement, “I am leaving them without a mother. Emptiness fills my soul.” As a mother myself, one of my worst fears is summed up in these heart-breaking words.

Get your hands on this fast-paced, elegantly written debut novel from Autumn Lindsey as soon as you can. It's something worth sinking your teeth into.

I haven't read or watched anything vampire related since Buffy, but I loved Remaining Aileen. It was a fast-paced read that was really, really hard to put down. It looks like there's going to be a sequel, and I can't wait! Seriously, this is the kind of story that needs to get made into a miniseries or movie. The writing is fresh and easy to read. The storyline clean and coherent. The concept original. Not my usual reading fare, but I'm definitely coming back for more!

I'm typing quickly and can't really write a review to do it justice, but a hurriedly written review is better than none, right? In a nutshell, Aileen wakes up to realize she's the only survivor of a plane crash. Where before she was coming to grips with getting older, now she has to contend with the fact that she will never age and will outlive her family. It's interesting seeing her shift back and forth between Target runs and bloodletting, all while juggling family life. Should she drain a chicken, or does she really just need another cup of coffee? Decisions, decisions.

There are also some pretty high stakes that I won't mention, because you really should read it for yourself.

Are you a bored Housewife and Stay At Home Mom? You'll love this story!

A handsome guy sitting next to me on an airplane?
Next thing I know I'm immortal?
Check yes or no...
hmmm. Would I dare?

I very much enjoyed this book!
Being a housewife and stay at home mom, I found Aileen's story VERY relatable!
But having the choices she had to make...would I do the same?
I found myself drooling over Donavan.
Feeling bad for Phil
and cheering Aileen as she went through this journey.

I don't want to say too much more and spoil it.

GO READ IT!

This book intrigued me both in fantasy and reality. It's a story of growth, heartache, and choices. We don't often get to pick the moments in our lives that force us to change, to make those difficult even seemingly impossible choices. in that way, Aileen is no different then you or me. Life and the choices of others have thrust her into an impossible place. She can never truly return to her old life, but does she even want to know what this new life entails.

This story hit me in a deeply and unexpected way.

I would watch this book as a mini series on TV and day of the week.

I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I started the book, then got busy(I’m a mom too). When I picked it back up again I could NOT put it down. I ended up binge reading the rest of the book in one day. The way she writes is very easy to follow and I enjoyed how real she made the struggle feel. Not only ethically but morally being a mom and vampire. I can’t wait to read the second book!

I’ve never identified with or felt empathy for a vampire before meeting Aileen in this book! Author Autumn Lindsey makes it easy to get lost in this tale of a woman who should have died in a plane crash but mysteriously survived . . .

Sometimes there's good reason to stay up half the night, cozied up with a good book. There was no stopping once I started reading Remaining Eileen. This tightly written, engaging novel has it all: family virtue, betrayal, jealousy, lies, lust...even immortality. Every page builds to a crescendo as Eileen's thirst becomes ever more compelling. Great read. I look forward to more from this author.

Aileen is a regular mom: she loves Target runs, coffee, her kids and husband—but she could also use a break, like so many of us! She heads away for a weekend, but the plane ride there ends in disaster—and Aileen is the only one who survives. Or so she thinks. In the days after the plane crash, she soon realizes something unexplainable has happened to her. She’s different—and when a dark stranger from the crash reappears in her life, he explains why. Aileen is horrified by her new identity, but it comes with a perk: the chance to live forever. .

This book was such a treat to experience. The setting and the characters are vividly drawn, the pacing excellent, and the ending made me gasp! I would call this “women’s fiction with a paranormal twist” and if that sounds intriguing, you should absolutely check this one out. It’s a wonderful escape read while also feeling firmly rooted in reality. .

Many thanks to @magnoliaindie and the author @heylindseys for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved meeting Aileen in this book and I connected with her struggle to figure out who she was after being a mom for awhile- though being a vampire would be a new challenge for me. Ha! This book is set in a place very near my home and that made her relatable story all-the-more easy to sink into. This also made the characters seem so real to me- like I might run into Aileen and her girls at Target. I also have the urge to go to Silver Lake in the middle of the night in winter just to see what it looks like then. Not to eat. Just to see. ;-) I loved every minute that I couldn’t put the book down and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I loved this book! As a fan of vampire fiction I was so intrigued by this fresh take, a vampire mom! Being a mother myself and also recently turning 30 I felt myself connecting with Aileen on so many levels and the way Lindsey writes is so easy to read and enjoy. This book blends beautifully the struggle of being a mom and a supernatural creature. I could not put this book down and found myself craving more when I had finished! I eagerly await the sequel!

I really enjoyed Remaining Aileen. As a mom, there is always that difficult balance between loving your children without losing who you once were/ are as a person. Autumn captures this wonderfully through a very unique metaphor! It was much different than I expected— part vampire novel/ part journey to find oneself. All in all, a great blend of genres. I can’t wait to see more from the author!!!

I really enjoyed this novel from Autumn Lindsey. Remaining Aileen is a refreshingly different take on a vampire story. Rather than your traditional vampire, Aileen is a mom trying to manage being a mom, managing all those expectations, and the side of mom-guilt that goes with being a busy mom, as well as newfound cravings for blood. I could see myself as a Mom in some of the things she felt bad about (Not the blood cravings...haha), and the struggle to maintain the household when the world you knew is falling apart. The story built well and carried you through wanting more. I am seriously hoping that there is more!

You know those perfect sparkly, self-assured, vampires? The ones that you could never in a million years relate to? Aileen isn't one of those. Aileen is a normal mom who second guesses herself, her body, her relationships, and well... everything you might too. Autumn Lindsey draws the parallels between the transition into mid-life motherhood and transition into vampirism expertly, adding in a touch of humor too. If you're one of those Twilight fans that couldn't in good conscious love Edward because it was a bit too teenage for you, but you loved the story anyway, you'll love Remaining Aileen - without the guilt.

Aileen goes down in a plane crash and yet somehow, peculiarly, she’s still alive?

Soon to transform into a vampire, how will she deal with continuing to be a mom? With bloodlust and not eating the kids? Add a coffee addiction and a struggle with an attraction to a new stranger who appears to be her maker?

Remaining Aileen is a fun, easy and lighthearted read (in spite of the post death setting :). A great blend of Twilight meets motherhood.

A fun frolick of a vampire book that you won't regret giving a few hours to. I look forward to reading, what I hope, will be the next in a series.

Remaining Aileen is author Autumn Lindsey’s debut novel. Lindsey provides new nuances to vampire lore as she twists women’s fiction and vampire paranormal to produce a unique blend that is at times light-hearted, and at others vampire-dark.

Aileen is a mom’s mom, facing mountains of laundry, two girls, and a body that at thirty is beginning its downhill descent. But things go to hell in a hand basket when she decides to take a weekend away from her family. The plane she’s on crashes. Everyone dies but her. When she comes out of her coma, she is not only uninjured, but has survived because she’s been turned into a vampire. Once she’s out of the hospital, Aileen finds new challenges, including wanting to suck her husband’s blood and having to run out of the house to avoid eating her children.

Remaining Aileen provides a terrific sense of place from forests laden with deer and their beating hearts to the cozy home Aileen shares with husband and children. The characters are well-developed, especially the children. A fun read, despite the darkness of its life-after-death themes.
