Flashlight Night: An Adventure in Trusting God

Rate this book
Elisabeth Hasselbeck reminds us that little hearts can be anxious too--and that God is always listening to their prayers.

Flashlight Night is narrated by a boy whose parents have used chalkboard paint to create a wall where he and his siblings can write out all their fears, cares, and concerns: Will I learn to blow a bubble? Tie my shoes? Stay out of trouble? Be the friend they choose?

The boy shares the wall with a friend, who records her own prayers. Later, they visit the chalkboard wall at dusk with a flashlight. The boy's mom shines the light on some prayers and turns it off at other times, pointing out that their prayers (and the children's faith) are still there, even in the dark, and that God hears every request.

Mom says, Sometimes we see God's yes,
and other times we don't.
But just because it hasn't happened,
doesn't mean it won't.

Even when it's dark and dim
and when we cannot see,
let's choose to place our trust in God.
He's close to you and me.

The author does an excellent job explaining how to have a child like belief in your faith.

Flashlight Night, by Elisabeth Hasselbeck, is a story told by a little boy about his family, a chalkboard wall, and faith in god. The main message seems to be that god is always listening and to trust him with your concerns and prayers. I thought this was a great story with a very touching message. I also loved the pictures that went along with the story and the idea behind the chalkboard. I would recommend this book to children ages 3-7 who are looking to grow their faith with god or to understand the meaning behind their faith. The book does include diversity within the family.

During the world's lockdown, this adventure in trusting God was given a chalk "wall" to heal the changes that none of us could control. A place to to write what was so "fearful." An avenue to see our prayers answered or prayer answers still unknown.

This is such a beautiful gift to every parent and child. Our hopes in providing the best to the next generation can begin with a simple piece of chalk and this book. Plant the seeds that we are never alone, that God does answer prayer, and that we can use our flashlight in the dark moments to see His handiwork.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022, I watched / witnessed / suffered through Elisabeth Hasselbeck's comeback on "The View." This book, her most recent, was promoted in the first few minutes of the show. That was the high point, when she actually... sounded human.

Then she went into a full theocratic culture war meltdown for the rest of the show until the celebrity guest blessedly showed up. At one point she did a strange performance art piece that included writing insulting comments about Pres. Biden on Post-it notes and affixing them to herself.

The audience each got a free copy of this book. It's a very nice picture book with a nice message for its intended audience. I got the book from the library, just because I was curious. I wasn't disappointed.

That said, I do wonder what Hasselbeck's children, who are credited as co-authors of the book, thought of their mother's... intriguing return to the show that made her a celebrity, beloved and reviled in like turn.

A boy and a girl talk about how they write their worries on a prayer wall to help turn those things over to God. After a few days Mom takes them back to the wall with a flashlight they turn on prayers that were answered and off over ones that aren't yet answered. The book ends with the kids thanking God for looking out for them.

I like how this gives little worriers an action to help them hand their anxieties over to God in a physical way. The book really focuses on that and doesn't go into why some prayers go unanswered, etc. This could be a great tool for Christian families with littles who tend to worry a lot.

This is such an awesome book to teach children about prayer. Basically it teaches a child to make a prayer wall on a chalk board. If the reader doesn't have a chalk board, the inside cover pages are black to use chalk.
The book teaches children to make their requests known to God and then to see what he has done by taking a flashlight to the wall and shine it on prayers he answered how you wanted.
It also teaches that some prayers we have to wait and wait.
The book is written in rhyme perfectly--no forced rhyming. Excellent book to teach the power of prayer!

What a lovely concept - a wall to write out all your hopes and worries. And to have faith that in time some of your prayers are answered. This faith-based picture book has universal appeal - rather than bottling up your worries, fears, hopes and dreams, share them, and trust that while some or even most are beyond our control, they may be resolved. I especially like the idea of checking back to see “the progress” and adding new ones and erasing old ones.

Super cute story about prayer, faith, and patience. I also loved that it rhymed, kids books are always better when they rhyme in my opinion haha
Its good to teach our kids that sometimes God's answer is no, and sometimes He wants us to wait, and sometimes what we want isn't whats best for us. Its also good to write our answeres prayers to remind us, when we get frustrated, the many times God HAS answered or given us a Yes.
Such a beautiful little book, I just might buy it 😊

This story is a captivating picture book that transforms a simple backyard adventure into an imaginative exploration. As the children embark on a nighttime escapade armed with flashlights, the clever interplay of light and shadow in Koehler's illustrations adds a magical dimension to the story. Esenwine's poetic narrative, with its rhythmic language, enhances the sense of wonder, making "Flashlight Night" a delightful and visually engaging bedtime read for young readers.

I got this for Charlotte because she has been interested in faith and prayer. We don't regularly go to church so I thought she would like it and help answer some questions. I liked that it didn't promise kids that every prayer they sent to God would automatically get answered. Kids in the book are a variety of races.

"Flashlight Night" by Elisabeth Hasselbeck, with illustrations by Julia Seal, is a charming book that invites readers to discover the enchantment of the night. This short and engaging read captures the excitement of nighttime adventures with just a flashlight. Suitable for all ages, it sparks the imagination and celebrates the magic of the dark.

This book is a decent tool for teaching prayer and patience. I think the language and illustrations could have been more engaging. It seems dated. Nice that the author included her children as authors too but it doesn’t feel like it was written in current times.

While, I like how the narrator explains you can pray about/for anything, everything modeled in their prayers are selfish things. Why didn’t praying for relief from natural disasters or for those who are hungry or for those who are can’t find work (etc., etc.) get included?

This book is about a child who wants to express himself on a wall with chalk. He writes his secrets, hopes, and wishes that everything will come true. The boy and his friend leave all their worries on the wall, and they return at night with their flashlights to see what has changed, if anything.

I heard Hasselbeck talk about this on the Rhythms for Life podcast. I love the concept of helping kids pray by sharing the prayers...it's good stuff.

A nice picture book about so many different prayers to ask God for. It also teaches about the idea of answered prayers. Has Bible verses Psalm 56:3, Hebrews 11:1, and John 20:29 at the end.
