Angela Liddon starts off her cookbook by quoting this quote she read. “Who knew the most taxing part of being an adult is figuring out what to cook for dinner every single night of the rest of your life.” I think figuring out what to cook is the most challenging thing about preparing meals. I use cookbooks mostly to help me figure out what’s for dinner and use them more as meal ideas. No matter how determined I am to follow a recipe, I never do. Angela Liddon makes figuring out what for dinner easier here with her nourishing plant-based meals.
Canadian Angela Liddon is the creator of her blog Oh She Glows and author of three plant-based cookbooks in her series Oh She Glows. Oh She Glows for Dinner is her third book and focuses on dinner meal planning, prep, and recipes.
The cookbook and photos are stunning and so beautiful and appealing to look at and read. The recipes are easy to read and follow with ingredients that are easy to find, with some, if not most, you might have in your kitchen. Often I find myself intimidated by plant-based recipes as sometimes I feel recipes are complicated by plant-based ingredients and methods however I thought the recipes here were simple and easy to follow.
Here are some recipes that I have tried to follow LOL and some I want to try
Go-To-Mains Instant Pot Potato and Cauliflower Red Curry (with Stovetop Option) Creamy Buffalo Cauli Tacos Weeknight Tex-Mex Quinoa with Cashew Sour Cream Crispy Potato Stacks with Boom! Broccoli Pesto Sloppy Glows Dreamy Peanut Butter Crunch Veggie Noodle Bowls
Meal-Worthy Salads Summery Chimichurri Chickpea Pasta Salad Glow-rious Greek Pasta with Oregano, Basi and Lemon Zest Parmesan Cauliflower “Potato” Salad
This cookbook is very basic. I cook plant-based ~3 times a week and I have made a variation of most of these recipes. There is nothing 'new' or exciting; just a pretty book with pretty pictures.
Overall: A great starter cookbook for those new to the vegan diet; lackluster for those who have been vegan for years.
First, the pros: 1) Every recipe is accompanied with photos of the final product 2) Instructions for making recipes are clear, with for best results and helpful information about how to store and how long it can be stored 3) at the top of each recipe, there is basic info about the recipe, such as "freezer-friendly," "soy-free," "grain-free," or "gluten-free." 4) For those new to the diet, it has an excellent opening section on stocking your pantry and meal preparation.
Now, the cons: 1) The recipes do not include information about sodium, calories, protein, carbohydrates, etc., making it difficult for those needing low-sodium options and for those counting calories to use this cookbook without some extra work. This oversight always surprises me in vegan/vegetarian cookbooks, given so many people opt for this diet for the health benefits and/or to lose weight. 2) The recipes are extremely basic; nothing new and exciting for the long-time vegan.
I'm enjoying this one more than any of the previous Oh She Glows books. These are very do-able in the average kitchen, other than the need for SO MUCH CASHEW. Cashews are so expensive when you're cooking for a family of six!
AHH!!! OH SHE GLOWS #3, I was so excited for this book to come out!! We ordered multiple copies 😊
We absolutely adore Oh She Glows #1 & #2, we've gotten so many good recipes out of these books that we have been eating for years!! Angela Liddon is seriously talented; not only in the recipe creation process but she also has a wonderful blog, great photography and design in her books too (another reason for 5 stars). Not only that, but she seems like a wonderful person as well, who is genuine, creative and hardworking. Lastly, we also love supporting local - she is from Toronto, ON!
Because I'm reviewing so late, we've already tried the Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos recipe, and it was amazing! Very different from what I've eaten before. It turned out really nicely, the only issue was that I think the hot sauce was a bit much for my stomach to handle (not used to some of the ingredients). But from a taste perspective, it was excellent.
I will say, I think cookbooks #1 & #2 will remain the favourites and this book will be in third place; there were less recipes in this book that intrigued me compared to the previous two. Also, I didn't love the paper in this book (we got hardcover version) -- it is more like normal paper, opposed to the glossy kind of paper in the previous two books. In terms of using the recipes while cooking, I think the pages could get more easily ruined with this type of paper.
As usual, I love the variety in Liddon's cookbooks - she gives you main meals, smoothies, desserts, snacks, appetizers - from a variety of cuisines including Indian, Italian, Mexican, Middle-Eastern, Asian, etc. This book, as the title says, focuses on "dinner" or meals more than the previous two books, which is great. Love the style of the other two, but I also appreciate having more 'meal' options.
I don't have much criticism for the book, it is beautiful and the recipes have a lot of potential! One thing though, is that some of the recipes are somewhat similar to her previous books - I'm thinking of pasta, salads, mac and cheese, nachos, etc. The recipes aren't identical or anything, but they aren't totally unique either. I'm all for new-and-improved/tested recipes from old takes, but some of the recipes seemed quite similar.
All in all, Oh She Glows is wonderful and I love the great variety of healthy, nourishing and vegan recipes. Another great reason to buy this cookbook is that when you eat recipes from here, you're helping the environment!!
I would recommend this cookbook to all: whether you are vegan, vegetarian, meat-eater, prefer healthy eating or not; families, individuals, couples, kids or not; I'd really recommend this to everyone!! I'm excited to try more recipes from the book and I'm sure I will enjoy them.
Looking for healthy recipes that will support your immune system as well as taste delicious? This is a wonderful new cookbook from Angela Liddon, full of plant based meals that will support your health while also satisfying your taste buds!
Her sneaky protein-packed mashed potatoes and creamy mushroom, green bean, and wild rice casserole were perfect for Thanksgiving. Next on my list to make are the maple baked beans and the velvety Alfredo mushroom and chickpea pot. This cookbook is packed with main meals, soups, salads, sides, desserts, and homemade sauces and dressings. Also included are meal plans, cooking tips, and menus for specific events.
There's definitely something for everyone in here, and I would also recommend Angela Liddon's other cookbooks as well!
A great vegan cookbook! Lots of real whole foods, in substantial enough quantities that one dish can be a meal. Liddon avoided the vegan cookbook tendency of requiring you to make several recipes in order to get enough to eat. Also a plus in my view: Very few recipes call for soy or other processed proteins.
Small complaint: Many recipes involve a page turn, which is annoying when cooking. Often, the recipe could fit onto one page, except for really long introductory chatty notes. Let's see, what's the priority here: a chatty note that most people will read once, or a recipe that hopefully people will use over and over? I vote for recipes without page turns!
I think I've finally decided that while I'm always interested in vegetarian cookbooks, the vegan ones just aren't for me. I usually look into either of them to find new veggie ideas (even though I do eat meat), but the vegan ones tend to have to much vegan butter and cashew cheese and what not. This is a lovely cookbook, I just hit my limit of that kind of thing.
This cookbooks is less innovative than I was hoping for. Angela relies on a lot of flavour (via herbs, etc) to make up for the same 5 ingredients that seem to rotate on the menus, which is mostly Tex-Mex. I was hoping for some more innovative use of veggies to balance out a partial plant-based diet.
I love Angela's cookbooks! Many of her recipes I make on a regular basis. This book is a good addition to her previous ones. I'm looking forward to trying some of her new recipes.
Oh She Glows for Dinner was the 2nd book I have cooked through from cover to cover. What I liked about Angela’s cookbook style was the multiple categories at the header of each recipe (Ie. Gluten-free, freezer-friendly, kid-friendly you get the point). There was seldom a recipe I wouldn’t make again. If I’m chopping all these veggies it had better be worth it… and good news, it is!
I would gladly cook through another of this authors cookbooks. I picked up this one as dinner is usually the meal in question. So I’ll make it easier for anyone considering the book, here is a list of all the recipes we have re-visited or any dish that’s an average 8/10+ as per those I served it to in my home. Yes, I make my friends/family rate the recipes haha it’s a whole fun part of cooking. Favourite, and those we’ve cooked multiple times will have an asterisk** below.

Don’t miss sauces: Boom Broccoli Pesto, Avocado-Cilantro Sauce (we preferred the parsley variation but both are great**), Creamy Cashew/Sunflower Aioli (Sunflower pref), Basil Pesto, Lemony Dill Protein Pesto, Roasted Red Pepper and Walnut Dip**, Italian Herb Parm, Pickled Red Onions, Rosemary & Thyme Mush Gravy**, Oregano Parm, Tex-mex bombs** (fajitas and we use with eggs), Vegan Parm**, Vegan Butter (hard to spread but shockingly good), Cashew Sour Cream, Vegan Feta**, Peanut Butter Sauce** (fresh spring rolls bestie).
Buy the pantry staples and nuts in bulk to save money cashews do come up a lot but didn’t go to waste. In short…. Buy the book, you won’t regret it!
Okay, I loved the pretty pictures and the ''extra info'' - freezability, whether there is gluten or soy in a recipe, how to substitute beans you've cooked yourself for the canned option, etc.
HOWEVER, if a stated premise is to making things as clear and efficient as possible, I think it is cheating to say ''prep time 20 minutes'' for a recipe when the ingredients list calls for ''6 cups of vegetables, chopped'' and also a recipe for sauce that is elsewhere in the book and that takes 20 minutes to make. No, you will not get this on the table in 20 minutes. I usually dedicate an hour and a half to cooking supper for our household of 3 adults and 2 kids, and if I finish a bit early, it means I can wash the prep dishes or do some baking or make some broth for the next day or make a Bulk Barn list. Also, Liddon's writing voice is a little bit annoying to me.
I am not vegan, but I like to cook vegetarian more often than not, and it was good to find some new ways to use cabbage (we get cabbage every fall in our CSA, and it's always like, help, what shall we do with this cabbage this time) and quinoa (you can only make quinoa bowl so many times) and squash, which we buy en masse at the end of the season and cook into the winter so that we can keep using local veg instead of those from Mexico.
So yes, nothing groundbreaking in the way of flavour profile or technique here, and I'm not going to suddenly start pulling out the blender/food processer for every meal, but I did find some recipes to try in order to shake it up a bit in my winter cooking life.
I have another Oh She Glows cookbook and I love it, so I was excited when we got this in at work (the library). Obviously I had to immediately read this and I wanted to devour almost everything I saw. I'm particularly excited to try out the Vegan Feta Cheese (pg. 237) and the Rebellious Battered Broc-Cauli Burgers with Sriracha Aioli (pg. 113). Those things need to be in my mouth ASAP! I also can't wait to try the Sizzling Maple-Sriracha Garlic Chickpeas (pg. 145) and the Mmm! Maple Baked Beans and Greens (pg. 81) for all the maple-y yummy goodness! In my opinion you can never go wrong with an Oh She Glows cookbook, they're always excellent.
I’ve purchased all three of Angela Liddon’s cookbooks and each one is treasured dearly.
Her latest compilation of recipes addresses the problem of deciding each night (or day) what meal to cook. The recipes included range in preparation time and complexity. Beginners will absolutely find a few recipes in here that are fail-proof on the first attempt :) I’m typically a 45-minutes-or-less-in-the-kitchen kind of girl so I appreciate Angela included quick meal options in this cookbook that do not skimp on nutritional value or taste.
A bonus included in this cookbook are weekly meal plans, an especially helpful guide that acknowledges how to economically use the ingredients required in all the recipes involved.
Well done, Angela! I look forward to reading your new culinary creations in the future.
Every so often, a cookbook comes out where you can hear the author’s voice. This is definitely one of those books, however, I might add that the sheer effort that Angela Liddon provides in guidance makes this a very useful book. I’ve already tried several recipes this week (having tried the helpful “Glow Getter Meal Prep 1”) and I am blown away. The Instant Pot Cauliflower Potato Red Curry has been my favourite.
This book is worth every penny. Also, being Canadian, I also appreciated the labels and measurements following what I would easily find in my local grocery store. A small difference, but helps make the recipes more versatile.
I flipped through this book several times, cover to cover, looking for something that I wanted to make, but nothing really struck me as new/interesting. I've kind of hit a vegan cookbook wall in that I've found some amazing cookbooks (Nisha Vora!! Favorite cookbook EVER), made a bunch of recipes from blogs and found a ton of favorites that are going in our regular rotation. So, this book wasn't hitting anything unique or adding anything to similar recipes that I've already tried. I did make a few things and they were fine, but not memorable. It would be a good starter book for new vegetarians/vegans.
I absolutely love oh she glows cook books, they’ve been an essential part of our vegan lifestyle change and this one is an excellent addition to my growing OSG collection. Beautiful pictures, excellent recipes and so tasty! My only tiny complaint is I feel that some of the books feel a tad repetitive...like there is always a fajita recipe, and a glow soup that tend to follow through the books. But overall, this book has more than enough new and delicious content to make it a buy worthy cook book 💚
Another great cookbook by Angela Liddon. The recipes are easy to make and full of great flavour. I love the fact that most ingredients are easy to find and that in this cookbook she has provided substitutions in many of the recipe notes to make it work for various intolerances or allergies.
Our family loved the Bruschetta burgers and we will be adding those to our regular rotation. They were easy enough for my kids (6 and 9) to make and had tons of flavour.
While there are a handful of recipes I may try, this is mostly a cookbook for beginners. The recipes are a rehash of almost every other plant-based cookbook, and not much new on offer. It’s heavy on Mexican food variations and flavors, and uses too much oil for my liking. That said, I will try the Portobello Boats with lentils, and the roasted carrot and dill hummus (minus oil) sounds interesting.
Can’t wait to try some of these delicious recipes! I own all three Oh She Glows cookbooks now and they are easy to follow and have great inspiration. Like the added meal prep and flavour combos...but disappointed in the index again (book two is most comprehensive with ingredients and recipes easier to navigate).
Another beautiful cookbook by Angela Liddon! Full of lovely pictures of delicious food, this features a good assortment of recipes for all occasions. I really liked how adaptable the recipes are for things like gluten free as well as all the tips for storing / freezing things.
So far I've tried two of the recipes in this cookbook-the Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos and the Baked Beans. Loved the tacos, but found the beans too sweet. I also have issue with the two-page recipes and long ingredient lists, but I will try some more recipes before giving the cookbook a star rating.
I love Angela Liddon's books, but boy oh boy, I'd love to read a healthy recipe book that doesn't rely so heavily on tree nuts and coconut. I'm deadly allergic to both. So, it's a bit of a bummer to turn page after page of mouth-watering recipes only to find lists of ingredients so reliant on coconut oil.
I’m so excited to try new recipes! This is a gorgeous book, with clear directions and most (if not all) of the ingredients I already have on hand. Yummy! Also, thanks for multiple recipes for veggie burgers.
Not surprised to have loved this one, as I’m a big fan of Angela Liddon and her previous cookbooks. Nice to have a dinner focus, and always appreciate the details and photo for each each recipe. Excited to try some of the recipes!
Great recipes as and lovely photos. My only complaint would be the use of canned beans and lentils in recipes. These days when we are try to reduce waste and support local producers I would prefer to see measures.
A good introductory cook book teaching you how to cook plant based meals. What I really appreciated is how the various recipes can be used with each other like nesting Russian dolls. I had always wanted to make cauliflower rice and this book has a recipe for it that is easy and delicious.
