Fun mystery with a gal that sees ghosts and talks to a cat!
Give up the Ghost by Jane Hinchey is book 2 in the series and has the main character, a gal that can see and talk with ghosts, solving another murder case. This one almost gets her killed. Thor, the cat, helps out. He is my favorite character. The hot detective is on the case too so there is a touch of romance in the air! An enjoyable read for sure!
Give Up The Ghost Ghost Detective, Book #2 Jane Hinchey 5 Stars

Review:
The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly through their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could picture in my mind’s eye the murder site and all the things that happened.
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Audrey is getting used to her new normal, having her friend, Ben, around as a ghost. At least she still gets to be with him, instead of missing him forever. When they have to find the killer of a local psychic, it will take all of her smarts and all of his ghosting if she is going to be successful. And Thor, the talking cat, helps her as much as he can, unless he is eating!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a ghostly cozy mystery. I really enjoy this series and I cannot wait for the next one.
Audrey is back at it with another Ghostly Mystery. Her romance with the Detective Kade is picking up and she just can’t help being Targeted for death 🤦🏾♀️ With this new mystery, Audrey had to solve the murder of a psychic and a bank robbery (are they related?), fend of attacks, pretend not to look like a psych patient when speaking to GHOSTS and a talking cat!!!! But in the end, it’s her relationship with Ben, Toby, her family and Kade that keeps the story moving

Catch a killer before the killer catches me. The killer is the boyfriend who wants to believe that he deserves to be mad. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Recently, I’ve really gotten into the genre of cozy paranormals. I’ve always been a fan, but this has moved into second place right behind urban fantasy. Add to that, I’ve always enjoyed this author’s UF. However, this series has been her best, and this second in the series is no exception. Audrey is just so funny and entertaining without being a mockery. I love the interactions between her and Galloway, or Captain Cowboy Hot Pants. Throw in an interesting mystery, and this is a great book, and I just can’t wait to see what comes next with them…especially with the ending!! Great characters, wonderful mysteries, and fun action/interactions make for a great time. Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
First book was great but this second book just goes that little bit further! It’s funny and clever, it’s entertaining and you will not be able to put this cozy clean paranormal murder mystery down! With a fantabulous but clumsy female lead and awesome secondary characters, a talking cat and ghosts this had me laughing out loud on several occasions and I cannot recommend it enough!
Audrey gets involved with another murder. As her romance with Kade Galloway heats up so does her chances of her own murder. Fun fast ghost cozy mystery.
This series just adorable! Such fun and quick mystery reads! I love how the characters are familiar and stay true to form throughout the series so far!
Book two. Audrey is well on the way to becoming a fully-fledged PI, but a bank robbery places her in the middle of a dangerous situation. Fortunately, Kade Galloway is around to help, as well as her ghostly BFF, Ben. Another winner, as Audrey is forced to face another ghost, a yoga class with her s-i-l Amanda, and a policeman who seems to be determined to find - or fine - her at fault. Full of humour, this is a clever mystery with great characters.
Another great light-hearted romp from Queen of Cozy's Jane Hinchey whose a good clean read without the over the top sex scenes & bad language. A Great for any age.
Brilliant, entertaining characters written to perfection as always, this is an area Ms Hinchey has always excelled in. Her main characters, secondary & third tier characters are so good, especially those who play minor roles, but you love to hate. There's just something about a Hinchey 'Bad Guy', even the one's masquerading as 'Good Guy's hiding behind a uniform and a badge.
In this book we see Audrey hitting her stride (and the floor and falling over the railing over the balcony and the pilates mat in a heap and just about everything else in between) in her desire to become a fully fledged PI as her skills improve to bring about her 300+ hours of supervision by Detective Sexy Cowboy Hot Pants aka Kade Galloway and while she has great instincts, Audrey needs some serious training & guidance by the professionals if she's to succeed in gaining her PI licence & acquire all the skills needed to run & operate Delaney Investigations properly, otherwise she may not live to see those dreams come true!
Unfortunately I've found 2 things a little off putting & 1 very unnerving about this book. The 1st is the idea that anyone would hire a PI to find a lost gold fish. Well, unless it was rare breed or used as a breeding stud specimen, but its not, its just a pet gold fish in a bowl! More often than not, if a gold fish goes missing, its usually because they were found belly up, given a royal flush & send off down the porcelain bowl into a haven of happiness in amphibian Heaven by a member in the household. But to shell out the expenditure it would require to hire a PI Agency, just seems ludicrous! Sorry Jane.
And the 2nd issue, I'm not sure why a lunch break friend who hasn't known their next door work neighbour very long or well, would hire a PI, when the police have just began investigating the crime to find out 'Who Done It'! I understand turning to a PI if the cops came up empty handed, but considering the incident had just occurred and Audrey was hired as the police left the scene, it too seem a little excessive to me and over the top!
Usually I believe Ms Hinchey's writing to be of a much superior standard, especially in regards to storyline, plots & content. It had me wondering if they were the first or only ideas that popped into Jane's head & she ran with it, wanting to capitalize on the huge success of the first book in the series being a #1 on the Cozy top seller list, and wanting to get a second book out to the fans asap. Authors are often placed under great pressure from fans demanding unrealistic expectations in wanting the next book now! I hope this was not the case here. Was this book too rushed? And did this pressure process bring this talented highly skilled much loved Aussie author's usually high quality & quantity standards down a fraction? Possibly, but I'll let you be your own judge. I prefer authors take an extra few days / weeks or even a month and give us the reader the very best possible book they can write, rather than rush it out with a lower content of quality & quantity. And I'd rather quality over quantity any day too. If this was the case Jane, Please put a poll to your Little Devil's and ask what they'd prefer, I'm sure you'll find most would agree with me, wanting the best for and of you.
And now for Point # 3). I know this is a light-hearted comedy cozy romp, but this is the second book now where Audrey thinks she's a private investigator just because she now owns Delaney Investigations & solved a huge case, in her best friend, Ben's murder! But in reality, Audrey has came close to being killed, more than once, has no licence, absolutely no training whatsoever, nor is she particularly guided by anyone, doesn't have a partner as such, often at times going off on her own, not telling g anyone where she's going, causing jeopardy, not only to herself, but putting everybody else around her in danger too by charging headlong into situations where she really has no right being. How many times in 2 books has she been hospitalized, needed rescuing or in way too deep in an extremely dangerous situation? Honestly I've lost count and for an intelligent women, its completely & utter madness & reckless!
As lovable as Fitz is, she has no experience with firearms or the safe handling of a weapon, no experience with dangerous driving conditions or high speed driving or pursuits, no experience in hostage situations or negotiations, she only knows minimal self defence knowledge and the tactic Audrey uses, a knee to the family jewels, the majority of self defense trainers advise NOT to use as your 1st line of defense as it often fails, many men are able to get up & shake it off due to pumping adrenaline, the fight & flight response and growing up with reoccurring impacts to that region over the years & often the victim ends up on the losing end. And while yes, Ben her BFF was both a police officer and a private investigator, he is no longer corporeal and can not physically help her, (nor is he usually around when Fitz gets into trouble). None of this gives her the skills to investgate properly, especially without a valid PI Licence (which I'm sure would be classified as illegal anyway), but I find this very reckless and quite immature & without a Private Investigator's licence & thorough training Audrey shouldn't even be investigating anything other than wrapping up the case files Ben had pending & open when he died.
Its also extremely irresponsible of both Ben & Kade to encourage her to continue investigating serious cases like Armed Robbery & Murder without formal training and both men have a 'Duty of Care' as Officers of the Law to keep people, the community & Audrey safe, this is a serious issue, Kade sould be in serious trouble for, including suspension. Delaney Investigations has NO License Investigators. Audrey playing Detective/Investigator should not be encouraged other than in supervised training senarios, especially as Audrey has no active powers of magic for protection other than being able to see & communicate with ghosts & a cat.
I know this is just a light-hearted cozy, but it's totally illogical & dangerous. I hate writing this, as Jane is a favourite author/friend and someone I've followed since she released her 1st book, plus I own every book she's ever published including all but 2 updated series covers, she's that good, but I have a few issues with this story and will deduct points accordingly for it.
I hope book 3 see's a return to more conventional, smarter & believable cases (even though murder & armed robbery are believable) and I want to see Audrey as the smart, intelligent woman she is, not acting like some dumb blonde ditz who'll jump in head first without considering all the facts, the danger & without training, precautions or back up. Not even the Police go in without back up or reporting back to base where they are, what they've seen & what they're doing.
I want to read stories that'll keep the reader more invested & intrigued with realistic storylines, apart from these 3 aspects, but in saying all that, 'Give Up The Ghost' is still an enjoyable read thats light, easy & refreshing with loads of classic Audrey Fitzgerald clumsy oaf situations that only a character like her can find herself in & that'll have you roaring in fits of hilarious laughter. Not as awesome as its predecessor, which was just beyond brilliant, but I do recommend both the author, this book & her other incredible series too.
Great characters, with hilariously funny laughing out loud moments (loved the Pilates scene & the one between Ben, Myra, Fitz with Kade looking on). Good writing & top editing with only 3 mistakes picked up in the Advanced Reader's Copy of this book!
I received an ARC of this book from the author and as always this is my fair, honest and impartial review.
I RATE GIVE UP THE GHOST 3.5⭐ OUT OF 5 ⭐

The highly anticipated second book of this paranormal series is here!! Audrey Fitzgerald, her best friend/private investigator, Ben, and the always hungry cat, Thor are on the trail of a murder and bank robbery in her town in this latest caper. Audrey got caught up in a bank robbery while getting the final business transfer paperwork taken care of for her new PI business. After a suspicious auto accident as a result of her possible clumsiness, Audrey goes over to the Nether & Void shop to get some relief from her auto accident injuries and some information regarding a murder of a psychic that was featured on the local news. Audrey and Ben believe the murder and the bank robbery are tied to each other, so they are on the case to solve these two mysteries before Audrey becomes the latest breaking newsworthy story.
This is an excellent paranormal story with great quirky characters with attitude along with plenty of snark and laughs, Audrey is a sassy woman with some serious self-defense skills while being a klutz in her everyday life. Ben is the loyal spiritual private investigator best friend and Thor, the talented cat who can dial a cell phone and communicate with Ben and Audrey. This story is well-written with a great predictable ending that works for these two adventures. Detective Kade Galloway is a great addition to Audrey’s professional and romantic world, that sets the stage of an awkward moments of romance full of laughs and possibilities.
I love this second book better than the first one, Ms. Hinchey found her paranormal niche with this series. It is a funny, full of snappy conversations, that keeps my interest in this mystery that I hated to see the ending so soon. Another plus is that she did keep the bathroom antics to a minimum, which is a nice break for this reader. I am very happy that Audrey is growing up as a private investigator along getting a much needed love life in this storyline. She and Kade will make an interesting duo in their professional and personal lives in their future adventures. I hope there will be a third book in this highly entertaining paranormal series that will come out this year. I cannot get enough of Audrey, Ben, Kade, and of course, Thor in this fantastic series. A five star rating for this wonderful weekend read!!
Audrey Fitzgerald has inherited a PI busines, car and home from her best friend and former police officer and PI, Ben. Ben now is a ghost and "helps" Audrey with trying to be a PI. Also helping her and training her so she can get her PI license, is Detective Detective Cowboy Hot Pants as she calls him...not to his face, AKA Kade Galloway. She also inherited Ben's cat who she can also communicate with. When she goes into the bank to sign some papers, she is held up in a bank robbery. Of course she has to start investigating when another case, the murder of a psychic happens and is asked by the store next door to investigate that one. Detective Galloway, who seems to have a major crush on Audrey and she feels it too, decides since Audrey is going to investigate these crimes, her will take her along with him on the investigations so he could at least protect her. Audrey gets caught up in some funny situations while doing her investigations since she is a known clutz! Sometimes, her clutziness helps her along. Getting tangled up in two investigative incidences (could they be related?) And she realizes that besides being able to communicate with the ghost of Ben, she can communicate with other ghosts as well. And when she talks to the ghosts and forgets to do it in her head or pretend she is on the phone, obviously people think she is a little "out of it." While turning the pages and laughing all the way you wil try to work out the investigations. I really like this series and want to see what ridiculous situation Audrey will get herself into next! I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Audrey Fitzgerald has managed to put a dent in the 1200 supervised hours of P.I. on the job training. Not a big dent, but a little none the less. So when she’s in the bank while it gets robbed, she decides to help Detective Kade Calloway figure it out. When a local psychic is murdered, Audrey sees something that makes her think there is more to these crimes than meets the eye...
A fun addition to these ghostly paranormal cozy mysteries by Jane Hinchey... whose Australian roots appear with a few terms that might faze U.S. readers but seem perfectly normal to English and Australian readers. I know that this English reader living in the U.S. wondered if the book was set in England instead of Oregon, USA a few times! Not to worry though, because the story is definitely entertaining, even though there were a few jumps in the narrative, with no segues between them. It doesn’t detract from the overall story, but it did confuse me at first. Audrey learns a little more about her new abilities, but not a lot, and we see a lot more of Kade in this one, which was nice too.
This is the second book in the series, and it could be read alone BUT you wouldn’t have the history behind Ben, Audrey’s ghost friend, Thor (the cat), or how everything came to be, so I highly recommend reading that one first!
This was a good read, a pleasant way to pass an couple of hours. There is some romance, nothing really lurid occurs, and the ending wraps up all the loose ends from the mystery. The background story makes a little progress too. Recommended for those who enjoy a little quirkiness in their cozy mysteries.
This was a fun story—especially the ghost Ben! I loved him! And Thor (the cat she can talk to). Audrey is a PI in training (under the supervision of hot Det. Kade). She inherited the business (house, car, cat, etc.) from Ben when he died. And Audrey can see and talk to him along with the cat, Thor. But it looks rather odd to others when she does since they can’t see or talk to ghosts.
In this story, Audrey is looking into the death of local psychic Myra. But first, she’s looking into three thugs who robbed the bank she had gone into. Which leads to her getting shot at and wrecking Ben’s beautiful car. And screaming Myra who isn’t what she seems (besides being a ghost). The characters were fun and the story itself a hoot. But I would suggest reading the first one in the series first so you have more of a background. It’s not absolutely necessary as I didn’t but I understood everything that was going on.
Recommendation: Definitely recommended.

This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Ghost Mortem was a fun and clever start to Jane's new series but the characters are really getting in to their stride in this book. Audrey is delightful, with a tendency to trip over fresh air but a fierce determination to make a success of her newfound profession of P.I. Having inherited everything from her best friend, Ben, including his beautiful house, his gleaming car, his P.I. practice and last but not least, his supercilious but superb cat, Thor, she has another murder to investigate. Detective Kade Galloway (AKA Captain Cowboy Hot Pants), her supervisor overseeing her P.I. training, continues to be gallant and gorgeous, her protector and saviour in the many tricky situations she finds herself in. Although Audrey is an accident waiting to happen, she also has a set of balls on her, an irony you will appreciate once you have read these books. Thor is fabulous, Kade is delicious and Ben is the best friend a girl could ever have, in life and in death. Jane has created a fun series with a great cast of characters and I can't wait for the next book.
Book Two in this series, and it’s as good as the first. Audrey and her ghostly best friend Ben find themselves involved in solving another murder. This time, it involves another ghost, one of a psychic, and a bank robbery. There seems like there might be some connection between the two, but is there? Detective Kade Galloway, aka Captain Cowboy Hot Pants, is along for the ride as well, and as he helps Audrey, he also raises the temperature with his handsome good looks.
This was a great read and a page turner. It’s hilarious, witty, and highly entertaining. Audrey’s klutziness and penchant for attracting bad luck, and her cat Thor, formerly Ben’s, add plenty of quirks to keep things interesting, while Kade Galloway keeps things hot.
I’d call this another hit from the pen (or computer) of Jane Hinchey. I’ve yet to be let down by one of her books. I highly recommend this one, and while it might be best to read book one first, I think this book can stand on its own.
I received a ARC of this book from the author. While I appreciate her generosity, it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
Can someone please explain to me WHY this book is set in the United States when everyone in it is clearly from AUSTRALIA? Aside from the weirdly anatopic speech patterns, expressions, and product names, I like the books very much. Note: this is the second book in the series and reading the first book is absolutely necessary to understand the story.
The concept is not particularly original, but the plot is fun, the characters are likable, and the stories are very enjoyable. I like all of the main characters, particularly Audrey. I like the idea that she is hopeless clutz, and I also like that she has an innate talent as a detective over and above the extra help she gets from her deceased (but not departed) best friend's ability to pass through walls and sneak around unseen. As the series continues, I am looking forward to seeing her develop her skills as a detective, and hoping that she will learn more about the paranormal and expand her own mystical abilities.
This book was as entertaining as the first, perhaps more so since we see more of Audrey's clumsiness and talking Thor. The pacing was decent. The characters were pretty well developed. This story has quite a bit more romance in it than the first, but it stays with the Cozy Mystery genre and keeps the "act" off the page. Kade seemed to go from maybe being interested to suddenly head over heals for Audrey. Something didn't sit right with me about that. If you overthink things like I do, you may either guess or come close to guessing whodunit. Two people mentioned at one point have the same names as characters from other books (Rhys and Skye), but they are NOT the same ones from Jane's other books. They are entirely new characters. Overall the book was entertaining and I will read the next one to see what hi-jinks Audrey gets herself into next. I am voluntarily reviewing this book, gifted to me by the author with no obligation.
Ms. Hinchey has been one of my favorite authors for some time. Normally I only read PNR. But when she started her cozy mystery writing, I figured I would give it a try. I gotta say, I'm hooked. This series has a bit of the paranormal that I enjoy, and it is filled with humor. Audrey's story just keeps getting better. I don't think I have laughed harder than while reading this series. When book one kicks off so well, you don't expect the same impact from book 2. Well this one nailed it. A ghost as your best friend, a talking cat as your new charge and I can't leave out the sexy detective. All amazing characters and writing that flows smoothly, this is not to be passed over. There is just soo much here to love. Thank you for another great escape. I am so excited to see what comes next...…..
I’m a glutton for para-cozies, especially with ghosts, but I’ve been struggling to find a new series that really grabs me. Jane Hinchey’s newest ‘Ghost Detective’ series has done that!
Audrey’s zany adventures continue in this second book of the series. The poor woman can’t catch a trick, so between finding her feet as a Ghost Whispering P.I, finding out more about Captain Cowboy Hot Pants, and finding herself in a whooooole bunch of trouble, she’s got a lot on her plate. And I am here for it! Audrey is wonderfully relatable and her relationships with friends and family make this such an enjoyable world to visit.
I’m enjoying so much about this series. If you like sassy characters, twisty mysteries, and laughing (and who doesn’t?), then it’s for you. I can’t wait for the next instalment!
This is the second book about Audrey Fitzgerald, not your usual hero type she's uncoordinated and clumsy and so refreshingly different from any other character I have read about.
In the first book, Audrey inherited a private detective agency along with a house and a talking cat. She also discovered that she can communicate with ghosts! She needs to work a certain number of hours to obtain her license so that she can keep her newly acquired agency. Her latest case is about a bank robbery but this is Audrey so nothing goes as you would expect.
The characters are refreshingly different and so well drawn and the plotline contains not only humour but lots of action, suspense as well as some romance and passion. But it's the author's way with descriptions and narrations which elevate this series - I wish I could give more than five stars.
OMG Jane is one writer I absolutely love, if you want some giggles or even tears rolling down your cheeks laugh this lady can supply it. Yes what happens in the yoga scene happens in classes. 🤣🤣 Anyway in this book Audrey is looking at having a great day yep that is so not happening, the day falls apart almost right from the start for her, and ends with a crash. I’m loving Audrey’s character is one well written character, detective cowboy hot pants Galloway and of course Ben are also well written. I love Thor the cat I can just see him acting the way he is portrayed. I love how at the end Galloway just accepts what Audrey reveals to him as if it is nothing, yep this guy is a keep and Audrey is proving she can at least defend herself some. But now I’m curious as to her stalker friend Mills and I’m hoping we get some more answers about him in the next book.
This is a great paranormal cozy mystery with romance! Audrey is in training to become a Private Investigator. Her best friend Ben was a PI until he was murdered. Now Ben is a ghost and he helps Audrey with the cases she is working on along with Detective Kade Galloway who is her Training Supervisor. Ben had a cat Thor who is Audrey's now and she can understand him. It makes for some funny conversations. In Give Up The Ghost, Audrey finds Myra dead. Ben and Audrey can talk to Myra's ghost so they try to figure out who killed her and why. Audrey gets into trouble following leads. Luckily she is becoming friends with Kade Galloway. The characters are likable and provide humor throughout the book. The romance is an added bonus and isn't steamy. The mystery is interesting and kept me guessing. This was a very enjoyable paranormal cozy mystery. I can't wait to read the next book.
It was a good book but still stuck on that overused plot device of the main character (female) trying to solve a murder (even though she's a PI - albeit a new and untrained one) and causing danger to herself and a problem for the law enforcement. I will try to read the next one and see if this improves.
Amazon synopsis: After inheriting a PI business, I find my clients are more incorporeal than not and are relying on me to solve their untimely deaths. Unfortunately, being a magnet for ghosts has its downside. Hello? Lack of privacy, for starters. Not to mention looking like a looney tune for holding animated conversations with myself. But the biggest problem? Their killers don’t want me on the case.
Now I have a new mystery to solve. Local psychic Myra Hansen woke up dead and she’s none too happy about it. Seems she didn’t see that one coming! Together with my ghostly best friend, a talking cat, and Captain Cowboy Hot Pants—or, as he likes to be called, Detective Kade Galloway—I’m in yet another race against time.
I kind of started to dislike Audrey in this book. She's a bit annoying. Total disregard for everything. Even the whole car crash was so frustrating. If she had called for help when she found the mask, so much would have been avoided. Also, her level of unpreparedness is supposed to be 30 years old. No charger at her office, food or a change of clothes. Her being clumsy, I can understand but not thinking anything through. Does no one use gloves? Not even the police. Also, is her not telling Kade about Mills, like, wtf? Knowing someone wants is lurking around her, and the people from the robbery probably want to get to her. She just swung the door open.
Most of reading this book was just noting all the ways Audrey was so dumb, like really she had no sense at all. It's like she's not even trying.
