After the loss of their father, the Porter brothers lean on one another for love and support the late Hassan Porter took with him. Lake being the oldest tries to find a balance between caring for each of his younger brothers and making sure they are secured financially. While Lake and his best friend grind it out, his brothers do not make his position as their leader easy. Dealing with four different personalities and individual internal battles from each of them, Lake with every odd against him tries to be the rock his brothers need. He struggles between being their protector and their enabler while also dealing with his own personal hurdles.
When entering the world of my books. Dive in with an open mind and heart. Leave your expectations at the cover and go on the journey with my characters. I hope it’s one you can enjoy.🤎
I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this book. Front St. Porter ain’t the urban romance I signed up for. When I say the Porter Brothers were a lot, that is a huge understatement. Lake, Vant, Wreck, Dem, and Sav took me on an emotional journey I was not even a little bit prepared for. I fell in love with every single one of these brothers (even Vant’s hardheaded azz) and their distinct personalities which, you will either love or hate. Lake is the broody brother who trusts no one but his siblings. As the oldest, he bears the brunt of the responsibility for everyone, including Mucci’s snake azz. Vant is the outcast and stays getting into some kind of trouble. He stresses TF out of Lake but, that’s his brother and he gon’ stick beside him. Wreck is the laid back brother until he’s not. I’d advise you not to piss him off. Just ask Najaah and Terrence. Dem is dealing with mental illness but, the brothers rally around him and make sure he gets the help he needs and will triple dog dare you to say somethin’ about him. Sav is the genius and the baby. Lake wants more for Sav but, he’s determined to follow the Porter legacy. These brothers tussle, fight, argue, and cuss each other out for no reason at all. But, at the end of the day, they are their brother’s keeper and they love TF out of each other. Front St. Porter was toxic, traumatizing, violent, and dysfunctional as hell but, the brotherly love and loyalty displayed by these young black men will tug at your heart and have you permanently residing on #TeamPorter. This was my first book by Nina but, it will definitely not be the last.
Whew Chile!!! These Porter Brothers and their women have me in a chokehold! I was not expecting to get wrapped up into them like I did. This book is A LOT. 😩 it’s triggering, it has sex appeal, it has trauma, it’s comical and was a pleasant surprise. These broken boys to men are a whole fool! I feel like I’ve compromised my morals enjoying this book as much as I did. *don’t judge me*. Idk why but I’m not trusting Mucci I’m ready for more!
Re-read: Review Update 6/6
Yup it’s official I still love the Porters just as much as the first go round! I’m looking forward to re reading the On Us Series and just know I throw hands when it comes to Lake 🥰🥰
Listen, these brothers are crazy as hell…but, they totally and completely love each other. Dem & Sav are EVERYTHING and are the comic relief throughout this story…I have been laughing since I started this story. Now, I’m trying to figure out who’s behind the camera & How Mucci fits into this…there’s something definitely deceptive about her and it haven’t been revealed yet.
Well, I did it. I read book one. The first word that comes to mind for this book is DYSFUNCTIONAL. Toxic comes to mind, too, but I feel like it’s not a big enough word to describe them. Lake was forced to grow up after the passing of his daddy at 16. He became parent to his four siblings. Where are their mothers, you ask? Well, they’re trash. Every single one of them. It was evident Lake looooved his brothers. Everything he did was for them and to protect them. Dude was so selfless. I know his daddy proud. But, these boys, they did not make it easy for Lake to take care of them. They had my boy STRESSED with the way they moved. They had ME stressed. They were soo reckless. It’s a wild ride watching (reading) these men navigate life, love, and the empire they created. I’m hella worried for the women who’ll end up with the Porters. I’m hopeful for Lake cause he seems more level-headed than his brothers, but I'm still hella worried. I’m excited to continue getting to know the Porters, but I need a break, a palate cleanser with a fluffy read.
Are the Porter brothers dysfunctional & toxic ? YES Do I still love them ? YES 😭
I went into this kinda blind not knowing what to expect & babyyyy it STRESSED me out. I put this book down for days at a time because them brothers was stressing me.
This book is very TRIGGERING so pls be aware before reading. I will definitely be starting the On Us series because I need to check on my ppl. Will Vant and Wreck get it together? Will Lake ass stop being so mean ? Can’t wait to see !
The amount of times “Ard” was said was criminal & it annoyed me. I also didn’t care for the timeline to skip like that. What you mean 3 years later excuse me ?
Do I love this book - idk? Do I care about these characters- actually yes Do I want to continue - yes Was this difficult to read due to violence, assault, trauma, pain, and everything else endured by these characters- Absolutely yes.
With all that I can see how Nina is laying the foundation for these characters to grow and there is so much more growth ahead after all they have accomplished here. I’m nervous and excited to continue learning their stories and seeing them make it to the finish line.
Please review content warnings because this is not an easy book to navigate without knowing what you are getting into.
Front St Porter isn’t your typical urban fiction read. For some that may be a problem, for me it was actually quite refreshing. In this story you will find five brothers, Lake, Wreck, Vant, Dem and Sav, also known as The Porters. Their father, Hassan, was killed and the oldest brother, Lake was left raising his younger brothers. Imagine being 17 and having to care for four kids! “One day you will have to take on everything that is me and be responsible for your brothers. No matter what they do, who they become, or how difficult, they are your responsibility.” Of course Lake wasn‘t their actual guardian, their aunt Mucci was. I’m not sure if it was the cancer or just simply who Mucci was, but I definitely side eyed her this entire book. “’Lake... I don’t give a fuck how you feel. They are your responsibility, and you will fix this.’ Mucci told him, and Lake looked away, tired of having to be held accountable for their actions even when they completely disrespected him.”
Can you imagine living as a teenager with no real parental supervision? Well that’s a day in the life of a Porter. “‘Sav, I don’t care. Just go.’ Lake said always giving them whatever they asked for. He was a part of the problem, but it was the way he had been conditioned so he didn’t see it.” From drugs, to guns, to girls, these kids were in to EVERYTHING. These kids were real life juvenile delinquents. And even though Lake wasn’t equipped to properly raise them, I appreciated how he did have some key morals and values for his brothers. The one thing that made me sad in this entire book was the fact that outside of themselves, none of The Porters knew what it felt like to be loved. “Lake you don’t show any emotion to anything. Your mom and dad ruined the thought of love for you. I want you to have it.” None of the brother’s moms were in their life. They were either strung out on drugs or too preoccupied with the fast life to care about their kids.
To say this was this author’s debut novel, I think she did an excellent job. Not only did this book touch on so many real life issues, it was hilarious. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. So if you’re looking for a highly entertaining read by a new author, look no further. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
The Porter Boys were a wild and crazy ride. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn’t it. Hassan was a single father of 5 boys with 4 different baby mamas. I don’t understand how he didn’t strike gold with at least one of them but he didn’t. They were all chicken headed scalley wags!!! Hassan drilled into his oldest, Lake starting at a very young age that his sole purpose in life was to take care of his brothers. Hassan passed away when Lake was 16 and Lake stepped in and filled the role of Mother & Father. Those 4 brothers gave him hell. They were spoiled, unappreciative and hell on wheels. I don’t know how Lake did it because I definitely would have walked away or committed myself. It was a selfless and thankless job but he did it with minimum complaint. The boys grew, learned and leaned on each other throughout this book. I pray that the drama and toxicity has come to an end and I look forward to more mature Porter Boys in the On Us series.
I was not ready for the stuff that went down in this book 😭. Now, I’m no stranger to books with a couple pages worth of trigger warnings, but the fact there was no voice of reason present? I mean, almost every male character was dabbling in domestic violence of some sort and nobody gives af 😭.
Not to even mention the scenes with the older brothers and younger brothers indulging in ykw, and no one in the story being appalled. The least y’all could do is look at a mf a little differently, but not a damn person even batted an eye?
Also don’t get me started on this Mucci character I’m jacking she was effing the father on the low or something. Fake-ass aunt, she rubbed me wrong the whole book.
And Omggosh, these time jumps??? What was up with that? Every other chapter they’re fast-forwarding a year later, months later, etc. 😭 Anyway, Vant is my baby and everyone needs therapy ASAP
⚠️ Check trigger warnings before reading this ⚠️ The Porters are really something else. These brothers are all so different from one another, wow. I didn’t know I’d fall in love with this book. They are so toxic, but I fell in love with the entire Porter family. It’s either you love them or you hate them and I love these boys so much. Their brotherly bonds with each other is pure gold. It honestly feels so genuine and heartfelt, like I could almost feel their brotherly bonds while reading. When things got bad between them, it was really bad. But when things were good, they were so good. I am so hooked to the other events that happened in this book too. It’s like the perfect character driven book. I’m picking up the On Us series right now. I’m truly glad I decided to read this before picking up that series. It really helps you understand all the characters within this book.
Lake and Vant are my favorite bothers though. Vant, he is such a loverboy. The Porter that truly allows himself to feel and I respect that so much. He feels the most human, along with Sav. I seriously can’t wait to see if Lake finds love. His character was so well written, that you can’t help but feel bad for him. His sole purpose is protecting his brothers and he’s only 19. It’s really like he’s 35 with the way he conducts himself. Like he lived two lives already. I wonder how his story will come along and what’s in store for the rest of the Porter brothers..
5 stars from me. This book was everything I needed!
This book was a lot. There were times I didn’t think I could keep reading. The Porter boys have been through so much. I’m hoping in the series I get to see them turn some things around. Lake and Dem are my favorites. There’s something about Mucci that I don’t like…
This book was absolutely phenomenal. It stressed me out quite a bit but I enjoyed the ride. I love the Porter bothers especially Lake and Vant. The love that the bothers have for each other is wonderful to see. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.
I loved this book sooooo much, I’m so mad I waited forever to start it. It really does have a special place in my heart bc I AM FROM PHILLY!!! 😮💨. The words, spellings, clothing description took me right back to lil young me. Hassan knew his boys! I laughed out loud so much with this book. I’m sooooooo glad the Porter Brothers were able to get that box!! The way they loved each other down made my heart happy. I can’t wait to jump into the rest of the series.
This series has been on my TBR for so long and babyyyyy I wasn’t prepared for the amount of toxicity this book had, but I pushed through and so happy I did.
So in Front St. Porter we are introduced to the Porter Brothers Lake the oldest, Wreck and Vant are ghetto twins in the middle and the babies Dem and Sav. They are trying to navigate life after the passing of their father Hassan. Not even being able to depend on their mothers, Lake steps up to the plate, and raises his brother to the best of his ability.
Lake storyline just broke my heart, I wanted to hug him so tight. He seriously sacrificed his childhood for his brothers and really isn’t appreciated for his sacrifices. The way that his brothers would talk to him at times had me wanting to come across their heads.
Wreck is a lunatic!! I have a love-hate relationship with him. It’s the fact that he has me questioning my morals because I still kind of love him deep down, but the abuse is just too much for me. Najaah needs to get some help as well because ma’am why is this behavior a turn on to you? That whole Terrance situation was WILD!!! 😳
Vant ole crybaby psychotic ass. How are you gonna be a dog in the streets but a crybaby as well?? Want your cake and eat it too but can’t handle when the same energy is matched. This man had me rooting for him and all he did was disappoint me! Ivy doesn’t deserve all this.
Dem is crazy I’m sorry I know he has mental challenges that he needs help for but the level of unhinged he was had me scared to even read about him, he had me stress thinking he was going to hurt Sav. I wonder why his anger is targeted towards Sav?
Sav the baby genius! He really is his brothers keeper! The relationship between Dem and Sav was so intense. They love one another so much! But I pray Sav learns to really help Dem, instead of enabling him.
Ivy and Avery have had a traumatic childhood to say the least, now grown up the sisters are just trying to survive. Ivy sacrificed her childhood and her body in order to ensure that her sister did not have to experience the same abuse that she did.
Mucci I don’t trust her. I feel like she’s not really their auntie because the way she’s moving ain’t no way!
And last note, how old is Hassan have four raggedy, baby mamas?? I’m so confused like not one woman you slept with was a decent person?
These Porter brothers are something else! They all are hilarious in their own way. They kept me entertained from beginning to end. I’m very eager to read the On Us series. Hopefully Lake gets him a girlfriend or something because he truly deserves it.
4/5 — There was A LOT going on in this book. My heart hurt for these young men that had to grow up fast, especially Lake taking on the roll as a father to his brothers. — I don’t trust their aunt Mucci, she’s a snake and I don’t like it. — I’m glad to have some background knowledge on the Porter brothers, let’s see what they’re getting themselves into in the On Us series.
Listen there was a lot going on in this story. So many characters and story lines. I don't know if I liked the actual story itself, but I definitely liked the characters. The brotherhood between the brothers was special and hella dysfunctional at the same time. Each Porter brother was so different. Lake was the perfect heir, but I felt so bad for him. His childhood was rough and he didn't really get a chance to have fun and be carefree. He was a caretaker, a protector when seemingly nobody protected him. Wreck, well I didn't like his character at all. He was way too abusive and the fool thought he meant well. No sir you just like toxicity. Vant's crybaby wanna be in love a$#, but also don't wanna act right was on my nerves. He was sweet with Ivy for a long while though. He however did not know how to handle his emotions and made dumb decisions when he was stressed. Dem was crazy and I really worried about him a lot. He was struggling and so unstable. Sav was a smarty pants and I loved his little mind. He was truly his brother's keeper and did his best to support Dem through his mental issues. What was so sad about this story was they were all heart broken by their mothers. I mean how did their father pick such trifling women that left these boys searching for motherly love. Years were passing in this story and honestly it never felt like any story truly had closure. I was clearly connected to the characters but I wanted more.
What was this book even about?!? Just one toxic thing after another. No plot. Women getting beat on. Molestation. Unanswered questions. A weird *ss aunt. Unlikeable characters all the way around! And the unnecessary time jumps??? My journey with the porters will probably end here 😭

Lissssseeennnnn!!! The reviews didn’t let me down at all with this one.
I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes for the final chapter. That DVD from Hassan took me out.
These Porter chirrens are A LOT and yet my heart expanded reading about each of them. They each have a piece of my heart for different reasons.
I gotta say, I need someone to whip Mucci’s ass ASAP!! I can’t with her toxic ish and I will be shocked if she wasn’t the person who’s voice was familiar and they didn’t recognize.
I can’t wait to continue with this series. I have a feeling I’m about to be up reading all night. I love them. And I want to see them all succeed. But seeing as how this didn’t conclude anything, but rather introduced new stuff I can’t wait to see where this goes.
Oh and please say it includes Ivy healing. Poor baby.
This book was crazy, toxic hood/urban book. It was a wild ride. I cried I laughed and was shocked at a lot of crazy shit but was entertained! Can’t wait to finish the series!
I am not going to lie, this book took me FOREVER to read. Not because it wasn’t good but I do feel as if the introduction of so many characters in the beginning overwhelmed me and caused me to keep putting the book down and picking it up. I however, did enjoy the times that I was reading it. It was never a dull moment. I didn’t particularly like that Lake was groomed to be in charge of raising his brothers. If their father Hasaan knew that he could possibly lose his life for living foul, why not just change your ways to ensure that you are around to raise your own sons?! My heart went out to him because he carried too much responsibility at such a young age. Vant in my opinion was just spoiled and I believe I liked him the least. He just did crazy stuff because he could. I would like to hear more about Wreck’s story. Besides his crazy relationship with the girl Najaah I don’t believe we got to know him as much. I never could understand the dynamic of Sav and Dem. Brother or not, Dem would had been cut off with his violent behavior. He is the true definition of “my brother’s keeper”. I gave this book 3.5 stars because of the amount of times I’d had to put it down lol.
It was very hard for me to read this book and I just began to skim it after the 50% mark due to the extremely toxic behavior in the book. The poor writing and lack of plot.
To me this book lacked precision. The premise of this book was very promising. Four brothers dealing with grief and trauma as they navigate the loss of their father, raised by their oldest brother who is only 19 and navigating his own childhood abuse, neglect and trauma of his own. However, the execution was ultimately very poor. I think if this book would have been mapped out from this version, edited better, and character arcs developed it would have been much more cohesive, nuanced and engaging.
One of the worst parts that absolutely turned me off and I won’t be reading anymore of her book due to this- was the statutory rape scene with their little brother where they encourage him and give him tips on how to have sex with an older adult woman.
And one other thing that was just too much for me. “Ard”. Like what?!!
I also didn’t like how the authors handled Dem’s mental health or Lake’s sexual abuse. If we are going to include these elements they should be handled with care.
Ultimately I don’t think this author or this series is for me.
This is my first finished read for 2023, and all I can say is WOW! I felt all the emotions while I read. I laughed, teared up, and frustratingly tossed my Kindle (IYKYK 😝). The end threw me for a helluva loop; Nina took me for a ride on Front St. y'all. I can't wait to discuss this book with my peeps in THE Black Romance Book Club next Sunday!
