Mike is in love with his best friend, Lindsay. And he's pretty sure she feels the same way…until a misunderstanding destroys Lindsay's trust. Devastated, Lindsay leaves town for the summer. When she returns in the fall, she has reinvented herself, dressing differently and hanging with the "in" crowd. And she wants nothing to do with Mike. When a video of a very intoxicated Lindsay goes viral, Mike has to figure out a way to be there for his friend when she needs him most.

WHAT I LIKED: It's a quick read with some really mature and complicated content. But...
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There is a rape in the story and I don't think it's well-handled. The main female character, Lindsay, is drunk and high on ecstasy at a party. One of the popular guys at school has sex with her when she's barely conscious and one of his friends films it with his cell.
Not once is the word "rape" used. I think "sexual assault" is mentioned once. The main character, Mike, talks to his mom about the situation and she starts talking about Lindsay taking responsibility for her actions. What. The. FUCK. Really.
Mike is white-knighting all over the place. He sees Lindsay as a "good" girl who had never had sex with anyone but now was participating in oral sex contests with her friends. He tries to intervene when she is at the party, but ends up being pushed down the stairs by one of the guys.
Later, he tries to take matters into his own hands by threatening the guy who had sex with his best-friend Lindsay (who he's in love with). This is after the video has gone viral. He goes to her house to tell her about the confrontation.
She's taken a bottle of pills and he calls 911. So he literally saves her life after a suicide attempt. At the hospital, he says he's her something-like-a-boyfriend. Awwww, a happy ending where the couple is together.
The rape and suicide attempt aren't taken as the serious events that they are.
I would have preferred to read this story from Lindsay's point of view or even one of her female friends. Not a male friend who is in love with her.
Highly questionable and appalling book filled with slut-shaming, victim-blaming and problematic language.
The protagonist is referred to as a "Paris Hilton porn star" and "getting her brains screwed out" after being sexually assaulted and taken advantage of while drunk. A female adult also says that the rape victim is "the only person who can be responsible for her own body and behaviour" + "it's not up to you or anyone else to look after her" + "she needs a wake-up call". Oh wow.
Such a shame as this was a very gripping read that addresses many hard topics... and does a poor job of it. How did it even get published?
This book, oh my goodness! It's so good, but so bad at the same time. I have so many questions. Does Lindsay get justice for what Josh and Bryce did to her? Does she go to the cops even though she thinks it will ruin her reputation? Does Lindsay survive? Does Lindsay finally realize that Mike was protecting her? Does Mike and Lindsay finally get together? Does Mike confess his love to Lindsay? This book is so so so so good, and I wish it didn't end with such a cliff-hanger. I want to know more!
I really enjoyed this book. I think it's interesting for teenagers. It has many things in common with what most teenagers go through in their lives. There a lot going on in this book like drama so who ever likes drama would love to read this book . It a book that show you, you can´t trust everyone you want to trust and the person that you trust the mostly sometimes they change .It show that you only get one chance in life . Deals with difficult issues. But I really did wish there was more in the book .
Okay. So. I'm really not sure what to say about this one...
Starting with plot.
Mike and Lindsay have been best friends forever. Well, best friends until Mike decides that he really has feelings for Lindsay and he's willing to risk his best friendship ever for a chance at real love.
So, the thing to do now would be to tell Lindsay, right?
Well, sure -- but what if she doesn't feel the same way? Then what?
***SPOILERS START HERE****
***If you plan to read VIRAL, skip beyond these stars***
***Once you see ~~ALL CLEAR~~ you can read again***
Ha, who am I kidding? Nobody is that intrigued over this one!
So, now, the spoilers -- because I can't adequately review this one without ruining it.
Mike is ready to tell Lindsay he loves her, except he then accidentally kisses some other girl who has a reputation for being promiscuous around school. Makes sense, right? If you're head over heels in love, accidentally kiss someone else. Got it.
So, how does Lindsay react? She gets drunk, does E, then ends up accidentally making a sex tape, which turned out to be rape since she was drunk and high on drugs. Right, that sounds reasonable. Okay.
Then what happens? She attempts suicide, fails, and then Mike and Lindsay can finally be in love. *swoon*
No.
I understand that controversial social topics like drug use, public drunkenness, rape, and sex tapes make interesting reading for the teen population. But there was something so rushed and so forced about this story that I just didn't believe or feel it all.
***End Spoilers. All clear -- or whatever I said I'd say...***
In VIRAL, I just felt like the author tried to tackle too many big topics without really giving any of the characters enough of a personality or backstory to really make the reader feel the emotional connection required to pull off the story. I mean, everything was so quick and dry -- I had nothing really invested in either Lindsay or Mike. Do they end up together? Who cares -- I didn't get enough of a feel for these characters to buy them as a couple.
It's not the worst thing I've ever read, but it's just not developed enough to be a book to recommend. There's so much great teen fiction out there, an author really needs to create a connection to stand out from the crowd.
I really enjoyed this book. I think it's interesting for teenagers. It has many things in common with what most teenagers go through in their lives. I don't like reading that much and I can't believe I actually read this book. I actually wanted to read more but I had finished it already. This book was interesting because it was about two best friends that ended up breaking their friendship because of circumstances which lead to something that would reunite them again. Mike and Lindsay are really close friends but they are so close that they both start getting feelings for each other. They don't realize that they both want to be more than friends. Until one night they both go to a party together were they is a lot of people. Mike and Lindsay decide to go somewhere were they can talk and get away for a moment. They start flirting until their friends interrupt and ruin the moment. Then Lindsay leaves for a moment and Mike stays waiting for her. Scarlett known for being easy and not the classy girl you would date. Scarlett goes with Mike and starts flirting with him until Lindsay sees them and quickly leaves. During the whole summer, Mike tries but can't get a hold of her. Until she comes to school a whole different person.A crazy party animal that didn't care about herself anymore. Which leads to a party where it gets pretty intense and gets Lindsay in a bad situation. Then Mike decides to step in and help out Lindsay. There is so much more to this book but I don't want to spoil it all. You are going to have to read this amazing book to find out what happens next. There might be people that don't like reading a lot of pages but this book doesn't have many pages. Which you would hate because it's such a good book. I really enjoyed this book and I hope you guys do to.
THIS BOOK MADE ME JUMP OUT OF MY SEAT AT TIMES AND IT WAS JUICY. THIS COULD BE FOR 8TH GRADERS AND FRESHMANS.
IT IS MOSTLY ABOUT TWO FRIENDS A GIRL AND A BOY, THEY DISCONTINUE BEING FRIENDS AND THE GIRL,LINDSEY DESIDES TO GO ALL OUT "COOL". THEY ARE AT A PARTY AND LINDSEY GETS DRUNK AND ENDS UP WALKING INTO A BEDROOM WITH AN OLDER BOY. MICKY HER FRIEND TRIES TO STOP HER AND MAKE HER REALIZE WHAT SHE IS DOING BUT SOMEONE DELAYED HIM, HE PASSED OUT. WHEN HE WOKE UP HE WAS TO LATE, HE WALKED INTO THE BEDROOM LINDSEY WAS THEIR, PASSED OUT, NAKED, SPRALLED UPON THE BED. THE NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL HE SAW A VIDEO GETTING PASSED AROUND, IT WAS LINDSEY AND THE OLDER BOY. MICKY DESIDES TO TELL LINDSEY AND TELLS HER TO GO TO THE POLICE BUT SHE SAID NO BECAUSE EVERYONE AT THE PARTY WOULD GET INTROUBLE. INSTEAD IN THE END MICKY BEATS UP THE OLDER KID AND MADE SURE THAT THE OLDER KID WOULD NEVER TELL "ANYONE" THAT IT WAS LINDSEY IN THE VIDEO. LATER THAT NIGHT MICKY GOES TO LINDSEYS HOUSE BUT SHE DOSENT ANSWER THE DOOR. MICKY KNOWS SHE IS HOME BECAUSE HER CAR IS IN THE DRIVE WAY. HE IMMEDIATLY CALLS 9-1-1 AND THEY SAID IF HE WERE A COUPLE MINUTES LATER SHE WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT.
THE BOOK ENDS IN A CLIFF-HANGER THAT IS THE ONLY THING I DISLIKE ABOUT IT, I HOPE THEIR IS A SEQUAL #2 . . . IT TOOK ME 2 DAYS TO READ, ONLY 130 PAGES BUT A SMALL BOOK.
HAPPY READING

The book is about a kid who had a crush on her best friend and then his friend misinterpreted the situation when she saw a girl kiss him. Then his best friend stopped talking to him and ignored him all summer. Then over the summer Lindsay changed completely and now she was best friends with the cheerleaders. Then They went to a party and a guy gave her a blue pill and then he rapped her .he took a video of him and his friends raping her.The video was shown to the guys at her school. But no one could see her face. But she knew it was her and she tries to commit suicide.
Why did i chose this book? I choose this book because the title interested me and i had an idea about what the plot was going to be about.
What was your favorite part? My favorite part was when he beat the guy up for raping her and then went to Lindsay house to apologized and found her on the ground OD and called 9-1-1 and then he took her to the hospital.
Did you enjoy the book? Yes i enjoyed the book because it was very interesting and at the end it left me with a cliff hanger.
Would you recommend? I would recommend this book to people who like stories that have unexpected endings and a dramatic change.
How do you help someone who doesn’t want to be helped? This the question to which Mike must find an answer, and it is a great question to ponder. If we were in a similar situation as Mike, watching destructive decisions unfold, what would we do? Van Tol leaves this philosophical question up the reader in this captivating narrative dealing with teenage angst and revenge.
Any reader will be able to relate to this story through its fast paced storyline and interesting plot, and it will not only captivate reluctant readers, but all readers across all spectrums...
SUMMARY: After Mike is seen with Scarlett at a party, Lindsay freaks out and will not talk to Mike. Then, all summer Mike is unable to contact Lindsay. In the fall she has changed and gives Mike a cold look whenever she sees him. At another party, Lindsay gets really drunk and does something with a guy, while on Ecstacy and Drunk. Then a video of her goes Viral and Mike helps her through a very rough patch in Lindsay's life.
This book was terrific. I sat down for an hour and a half and started to read this book then at the end of an hour and a half, I was done the entire book. I highly reccomend you read this book.
I read this with a literature circle with four students in a reading class (they chose it from the library) and did not like the way it frames (*spoiler alert*) a sexual assault that happens in the book. It takes a long time for them to even call it assault (the word "rape" is never used). I think without adult guidance, there are some troubling messages kids would get from this book reading it on their own.
Very interesting, but the ending was SO abrupt! I needed to know more. I wish there would have been an epilogue or something, just so we could know how things worked out. An okay read, all in all.
Quick read to help my reading goal for the year and so I can recommend to students. Not a very developed story, and the protagonist spends far too much time "thinking" about what he should do instead of acting. Teen drama will probably hook reluctant readers though.
I read this in my role as high school librarian, because we had a parent complaint about the content. While the subject matter was difficult, the book could serve as a great conversation starter. I'm planning on advocating for it to stay on our library shelves, but with the addition of a "mature content" sticker.
I enjoyed this book. Interesting main characters who have to go through some horrendous and all too real situations. Considering how short this book was, the author does a good job.
Found this book to be very problematic. The way women are portrayed are from the male protagonist viewpoint and feels very immature. Slut shaming et.c.
Mike's feelings for Lindsey have changed. Sure, he still wants to be her friend, but now he wants more from the relationship. The problem is, he completely screwed up his chance with her at the end of last summer. Now that it's fall, Lindsey has completely changed. Gone is the athletic good girl. In her place is a girl more interested in the number of boys she can have oral sex with than her grades. But when Lindsay decides to go upstairs at a party with the wrong boy, a video is created. Can Mike help Lindsay change her life before the video goes viral?
This is a book in the Orca Soundings series. Books in this series have been deliberately created for the struggling YA reader. High interest and low vocab, the plot and characterization are sparse at best. Van Tol does the best that she can with this plot under these parameters. The plot ends right where most readers would want it to continue. This might be deliberate so as to encourage deeper thinking by the reader and provide a jumping off point for writing their own ending.
I think this book could have handled the situation way better than what it did. Mike needed to be more of a friend and not let his cowardice stand in his way of doing what was right. This book could have shown younger kids more of the right way of doing this and the consequences of their actions. It could have been longer and more drawn out.
The writing was good and fluid. The characters could have been a little more developed, but as the book was very short, it would have been hard.
I really do think this topic needs to be shown more in mainstream writing, as well as a better way of handling it so that kids would know what not to do and how to respond if they are ever in this situation. There is a trigger warning for rape in this book, so be warned.
The ending was a bit abrupt and you are left not knowing what happens, and since there is no sequel, that is bad. It needed to have more with how things ended and dealt with, with all the characters.
Viral is kind of a messed up book. It is about a guy named Mike and a girl named Lindsay. Mike gets feelings for Lindsay (of course) and Lindsay gets feelings for Mike. Then the school slut comes along and ruins everything for them, and, naturally, Lindsay retaliates how girls retaliate-by totally changing their life around, and cutting you out of it. Mike tries to stay in the loop, but he may or may not be the reason she gets worse......
I recommend this book for people who like drama. Viral also has a mature theme, but it doesn't really detail it. Its a really easy read and overall, very good.
Mike and Lindsay have been friends for years, and just when Mike’s ready to get serious he and Lindsay have a falling-out. Now, Lindsay comes back from the summer changed. She’s smoking, hanging with a different crowd and Mike hears she’s sleeping around. Now there’s a phone video going around of Lindsay. This is part of the Orca Soundings series, high interest easy reads for high school students. The language, situations and drug/alcohol use makes this one too mature for middle school.
There wasn't much I liked about Viral. I did like how Mike cares for Lindsay and how he tries to help her, but I thought he didn't do enough for her and that his lack of courage to speak up got to be very annoying. I also liked that it took on some deep topics, but thought they weren't dealt with very well. Finally it was a quick read, which is always nice. I personally wouldn't recommend this book.
Mike and Lindsay are best friends, but Mike falls in love with her. He thinks that Lindsay likes him back. Then, Lindsay gets mad for a small mistake that Mike didn't do. She loses his trust. Wanting to avoid Mike, she leaves for the summer. When she comes to town, Lindsay isn't Lindsay. Lindsay made a bad decision at a party, but she had no clue that someone recorded the whole thing. The footage gets spread around, and Mike has to be really brave to help Lindsay with the horrible situation.
I liked Viral but what a cliffhanger! The content is for a mature audience and I enjoyed how Lindsay and Mike's actions/reactions seemed real. I enjoyed the story, but I really want to know what happens afterwards. I don't even know if a second part is coming.
i like this book because it was more like how society is these daays. ex: these days people will video tape a fight and put it all over facebook. Well this story is some what similar but different t the same time.
