Weird Wedding at Wonky Inn

Rate this book
Whittlecombe.

A charming and peaceful village in the south west of England. All thatched cottages and winding country lanes, triangle sandwiches, cream teas, and picture postcard perfection.

But people are dropping like flies.

It’s just the flu, right?

Could be. Except, wonkiest witch, Alfhild Daemonne, is about to host the vampire wedding of the century at Whittle Inn.

Coincidence?

Perhaps Alf’s fangtastic guests are to blame? Or could bitter arch rivals ‘The Mori’ be making a move on Alf and her wonky inn once more?

Is feisty Alf fighting back?

You bet she is!

There’s chaos and catastrophe and plenty of weirdness in this latest instalment of the Wonky Inn series.

Read it now.

‘OMG! I loved this one and I can't wait to read more. Alf is a wonderful character, strong, spunky, and magical. The cast of characters are quirky, the mystery is captivating, and the mix with the paranormal is brilliant. This is one series that I'm going to devour.’ Amazon Reviewer

‘This is the first book in a delightful new series featuring a bizarre (wonky!) inn set in the English countryside. The inn is brought to life by a host of zany characters, some supernatural, some not. But all of them are fun and highly entertaining. The story is very well written an provides a blend of paranormal fantasy and cozy mystery. I found it to be an easy read because I couldn't put it down. I eagerly await the next book in this extremely fun series. Highly recommended.’ Amazon Reviewer

I love the main character Alf and adore the new character, pink haired Charity who I just hope she keeps spitting out lines like.

“We can’t let that happen, Alf. It’s like sending a lamb to the slaughter!”
“Well what do you suggest we do?” I asked, feeling helpless in the face of her passionate onslaught. “I can’t get in the middle of this.”
“Well why on earth not? This isn’t an episode of Star Trek. You don’t have a Prime Directive.”
“A prime wha—?”

The mystery is given short shrift in this book and that’s why I knocked off a star.

Weird Wedding at the Wonky Inn - a review by Rosemary Kenny

I love love love Jeannie Wycherley's MC Alf(hilda) Daemonne! Zany, goofy at times and even a little geeky she has a good heart and deserves better than to be at everyone's beck and call - including to the ghost of her long-dead great-grandmother, (affectionately nicknamed 'Gwyn'), who can be a critical prima donna at times!
Luckily the effects of the afterlife in the form of Florence the still-burning resident maid and others of her ilk, who keep things ticking over at the Whittle (aka Wonky) Inn, that Alf now runs - after all, she's the latest in a multi-generation family of witches, so should be used to a spooky going-on or 99!
To that end and having revamped the Wonky Inn to more modern standards, Alf decides to throw the Inn open to the local villagers, (of whom she is also landlady as owner of many of the cottages), for a Hallowe'en Party. The eponymous wedding comes about when the Inn is hired (with no expense spared on the part of the groom's family) for a vampire wedding, outside at midnight! Alf can't afford to turn down the vastly profitable enterprise, though if she'd known the stress and shenanigans likely to be involved she may have decided against accepting the contract.
How will it all end? Will Alf have bitten off(!) more than she can chew trying to keep her strange nocturnal guests happy - and away from the villagers?
Read Weird Wedding at the Wonky Inn - and all Jeannie Wycherley's fabulous books for a good laugh, a few thrills and a cozy mystery like no other - you'll love
all her books and - like me - wait eagerly for the next story of Alf and her Wonky Inn...but hopefully not for too long!

“I’m not sure what first alerted me to the fact I’d found my second corpse in less than six months.”

Well, as you can likely gather from that quote, this one is off to a very exciting start … throw in a very strange wedding and the fact that we get to see more of this absolutely darkling town and I was hooked from the beginning.

The action and excitement are really non-stop and the more I see of this world, the more hooked I am. Absolutely will read on in this series.

4 stars.

With asshole villagers threatening and slandering the protagonist--this book put me in a foul mood... or maybe I was already there. Yeah, that's more likely. And then there's the overtly patriarchal, controlling vampire groom who needs to be staked.

The first 2 volumes in this series were really fun and light, which sometimes is what you feel like reading when you're depressed and grieving. I'm guessing volume 4 won't push my buttons like this.

SPOILER:

The ending was pretty satisfying, but it would have been more so if Melchior were decapitated.

I also expected that verbally abusive asshole Grace to apologize profusely after Alf helped save her children. She'd been threatening her, verbally abusing including outrageous false accusations and attacking her practice, and slandering her--and Alf is the batshit bully's landlady, too, so I wanted at least the threat of eviction. Sure, one random villager apologized on behalf of everyone who had been hostile, but that didn't feel sufficient.

Alf is definitely not bitter and curmudgeonly like me, but she's only 30 years old. I wonder if empaths... at least, female empaths... can reach age 50 without becoming jaded and curmudgeonly.

Wonky Inn Series:
The Wonkiest Witch: Wonky Inn Book #1 - This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the story. As I became wrapped up in the pages, I started enjoying the storylines and the characters and wondering how much witch Alf would become. Since I've been reading about witches a lot lately, I get bored when I come across another witch refusing to be herself. Why deny what you are; do you give yourself a lobotomy if you're intelligent and want to dumb down to normal? One of my role models, as a kid, was Samantha Stevens, she remained true to herself, and an independent woman, regardless of her silly husband's demands; unlike Jeannie, a beautiful, two-legged Labrador (eager to please her master). Ms. Wycherley's writing style is conversational and casual. The likable and interesting characters are developing at a good rate and will probably gain more depth as the series continues. The storylines do a good job setting the foundation from which the series will build. Once the intros are made there's plenty of intrigue and suspense. A fire opens a can of troubles bringing the witch in Alf to full acceptance. A unique use of ghosts, which I've never read. I'm curious about the rest of the stories. I found this author on and her book through Booksprout. 4*

The Ghosts of Wonky Inn #2 - As much as I liked the first book, I loved this one. I absolutely love the ghosts and what they can actually do. This is one of the things I love about this series; plus the fact that the witch uses magic instead of denying who she is. The variety of ghostly characters are great. I couldn't put the book down, I was so immersed in the fast paced, funny and intriguing storylines. The characters range in personalities, eras and locations, lending the story depth and substance. 5*

Weird Wedding At Wonky Inn #3 - The additions to this series just keep getting better. Another hard to put down story. I love some of the guest characters; especially when she hit him (read the story), although why use blackmail in this case? Alf mixes a party with a vampire wedding and wonders what else is going to happen; lots do happen. Great-grandmother brings her share to the table and then splits, leaving a spot of bother. George is great with his acceptance of the vamps since he didn't get on board quickly about Alf being a witch previously; what trust is that. The past is over for Alf as she finds the Mori is still about. Oh, speaking of the past, how about crazed villagers and a burning (read the story). That's all the spoilers I've giving out. There's more but I want you to enjoy the book like I did, without a book report. 4*

Fearful Fortunes and Terrible Tarot #4 - I can't get enough of this series. I enjoy the characters and their functions throughout the series. This one has almost everyone undercover. Another well thought out addition full of intrigue and suspense, and humor. The storylines are developing and there's definitely bad news ahead. This book is darker than the previous ones and Alf gets to experience what witches suffered through centuries past. I didn't care for the ending; of course for the main reason (read the book) and Alf's attitude was nonchalant concerning that reason. I did enjoy Mama Henri, a voodoo queen from NOLA. 4*

The Mystery of the Marsh Malaise #5 - I absolutely love this series. You never know what to expect from Ms. Wycherley and her crew. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, there's a twist and you're off again working it out. The characters grow on you and the ghosts are a big part of the enjoyment. Yes, there's some darkness in this story; you've the good vs. the bad, plus a lot more in the storylines. There's a new ghost and he's great; I enjoyed what he and another ghost did to help Alf. With George, you know he's going to be found sooner or later, but what else is found and the result is hilarious. Alf is still my type of witch and she keeps kickin' it. Read these books sequentially, it is worth the time invested. A good, clean story full of interesting characters of all sorts and well thought out storylines with twists you just don't see coming sometimes.5*

The Mysterious Mr Wylie #6 – Entertaining and intriguing. Good storylines continued and new make this an interesting series. The past and the present come together with a bit of time travel to 1983, not a time I would have picked. The pace is fast and the characters, old and new, along with the humor help keep the reader immersed in the pages. It is great to see D back and he adds a bit of sexual tension to mix; good banter between him and A. 4*

The Great Witchy Cake Off #7 – There is a whole lot of intrigue with the murder, and pas and possible new love interest. I was happy with all the baking and not one bite available for me to sample, which is so sad since all the desserts sounded worthwhile to indulge with a cuppa. Again, there are good storylines, good characters with appearances from previous books and plenty of additional features in the background making Number 7 a toothy read. After reading so many of this series, it is hard not to get into a book report instead of a review, but I’ll let you discover that for yourself. 4*

Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn #8 - while it started slow for me, I was not in the mood for vampires, the pace picked up and I was immersed in the captivating storylines and good characters. This ended up being a good read. The author's talented blending of old and new storylines, vivid descriptions, I fell in love with Romania again, and her creative creation of characters made this story hard to put down once everything came together. Plenty of intrigue and suspense with touches of humor and romance. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 4*

The Witch Who Killed Christmas - If you at all can, read the other books first, there's spoilers. Another well written, entertaining story that starts around Christmas, just months later after Wonkiest ended. While not as intriguing as Wonkiest, there was a difficult problem to solve. The cast of interesting characters are still around. The writing style is still casual with humor and drama dispersed throughout the story, this is a quickly read novella. 4*

Magic, Murder and a Movie Star, #10 - I laughed myself silly with the names of the Witchywood movie cast. Fun. Entertaining. Good story lines with a seamless blending of the old with the new. The characters are always good in this series; you cannot help but love the regular crew and some of the new ones. Lovely surprise for Alfhind near the end. Well written and well thought out. 5*

Judge, Jury and Jailhouse Rockcakes, #11 - A wonderful story with plenty of humor through out the drama, a good balance. Well written and well thought out, the story lines were interesting and the book was hard to put down. Professor Dodo appears in this story; his interesting story is the first of the Wonderland Detective Agency series. Alf's experience as a Goblin is entertaining while performing a great deal of investigations in record time. 5*

A Midsummer Night’s Wonky, #12 - A lot of serious business going on this time around. There is a heatwave that does not help. 80 degrees F in Germany is almost as bad as 100 deg F in Texas, so imagine 70s in the UK. A whole lot of love is happening, including Manc and Silvan, which creates havoc for C and A. A good story. 4*

Pieces of Hate, #15 - It has been a long time since I read Vengeful Vampire at Wonky Inn, #8. I worried about missing the several books between Vengeful and Pieces. Silly me, it was like I never left. I still remembered the characters from the previously read stories. Pieces was fun and interesting, and I did not put the book down until the last page. It was enjoyable to return to Wonky Inn, and this story did not disappoint. Wonky Inn is one of my favorite series to get lost in at any time. 5*
Wonky Inn Series End.

Wonderland Detective Agency series.
Dead as a Dodo - I enjoy reading books by this author and this one fits in. There are characters from The Wonky Inn series. Eliseo is a good character along with the rest of the cast. Interesting. Fun. Good story lines. Better than a Cozy mystery. 4*

Alfhild Daemonne, a local witch, set out to deliver door-to-door invitations in the village of Whittlecombe for the grand re-opening of her Whittle Inn on Halloween. It wasn’t until she bent down to smell the roses in Mr. Pearce’s yard that she smelled something a bit “off”, but not strong enough to identify it. As she knocked, the unlocked door creaked open a crack. There was still no answer to her calls, and she decided to go in to make sure he was okay. She climbed the stairs toward a little frightened terrier and heard a buzzing followed by a clatter of something. Mr. Pearce was lying still on the floor and a red globe made of negative energy was hovering in the air, spitting out glitter and buzzing angrily. It came at Alf and, hovering inches from her face, suddenly launched itself through the window, splintering the glass as it crashed through. Apparently her enemy, the Mori – an international highly secretive organization made up almost entirely of warlocks banished for some wrongdoing -- were back!

Detective Sergeant George Gilchrist was questioning Alf about what she saw. She knew more than she was saying, and he wanted the truth. Later when Alf went to Whittle General Stores to see her friend Rhona, a customer had come in and said she had seen the victim walking his dog just the night before. Knowing the victim was killed 2 days ago, Alf blurted out that it was impossible to have seen him then. She left the store and the customer, Charity, ran up behind her – and Alf immediately noted, “You see ghosts!” Charity told her about her ability, and Alf admitted she also saw ghosts.

While the investigation continued, Alf was given the opportunity of hosting a wedding, unfortunately on the day of her grand opening. But she agreed, not realizing it was a vampire wedding! With an active murder investigation, paranormals and humans gathering, the Mori back in town, and a vampire wedding at the same time as the opening night party for the town, what could go wrong?

This is a really good book, very well written and characters well defined. Each scene and action is described perfectly, with enough detail to make the reader feel they are standing in the middle of whatever is going on. Humor is always a favorite of mine in a cozy – and this author handled it expertly. The story line is well thought out and moves at a nice pace to keep the reader fully interested. I liked this book so much that I went back to purchase the rest of the series. Give it a try and I’m fairly certain you will enjoy this one!

Don't vampires usually just elope? Guess not, as the Wonky Inn prepares to host their first event, a vampire wedding.

Book three (or 3.5 if you could the Christmas short story) in the Wonky Inn series continues to build on this delightful setting and cast of characters. For new readers, I should note that each book is self contained and stands well on its own, so feel free to jump in at any time. There will be some references to what has come before, so if you enjoy this one, you will definitely want to go back and fill in the gaps, but you should have no problems catching on if you start here.

So where was I? ...delightful setting and cast of characters. Set in the English countryside, the Wonky Inn hosts a fantastic cast of characters including small town country folk, ghosts, witches and other supernaturals. The core cast of characters are all well developed and entertaining on their own, but once the supporting cast adds their own zany elements, the real comfortable chaos settles in.

Now, from all that, you might expect this to be a light comedy book, but it is not. It is actually something of a supernatural mystery story. The mystery plot is actually very well developed and definitely not playing second string. Just the opposite. The bizarre elements of the Wonky Inn provide some comic relief to keep things from getting too serious. The result is a perfect blend of mystery and humor making for a charming weekend read.

Highly recommended.

The wedding of the year?

What a terrific read. Okay we never found out who killed one of the guests and one of the villagers but nevertheless it was a terrific journey with all our favourites. A vampire wedding, a celebration promoting the inn's reopening and a lovely romantic ending.
The grand opening of the inn is looming up fast so she decides to take round the invitations personally. However she has a bad feeling when she approaches one of the cottages and this is confirmed when she finds the body of the resident. Worse however is the fact that there is one of the Mori there too. Now she has to call the police and make sure that the surviving dog is taken care of. However her troubles are just beginning as she also areas to a wedding taking place on the same night as the reopening. It is only after she agrees that she finds out that it is a vampire wedding! With a list as long as your arm of the requirements that the groom has she is more than unhappy at the prospect. The only bright spot is that Charity has agreed to be her manager. Add in vampires arriving early, sickness in the village, fights amongst the vampires, death of one of them, a bride that seems to have to follow every instruction from the groom, a village uprising and a scouts hut disaster. Will she every have peace and quiet again? Why are the villagers up in arms? Will the wedding go ahead? What can she do about the Mori?

Alf is finally ready for her soft opening of the Inn and much to her surprise she receives a request to host a wedding on the same night as her soft opening, after humming and haring she finally agrees to host it. Now she is worrying about the wedding going off without a hitch, the townspeople seeing her as one of them, what happened to Mr Pearce and if the Mori are back. Fortunately she has a lot of support including DS Gilchrist, Rhona, Charity, Millicent and all the ghostly staff of the Inn to help, but will it be enough. I loved how we were kept guessing in regards to the intentions of the wedding being held at midnight on October 31st as well as who or what is causing people to fall ill in the town but my biggest concern while reading was would the town turn against Alf even though all she wants to do is bring the Inn back to life and be apart of the close knit community. I just love how with each book I have fallen more in love with the Wonky Inn and all of it's inhabitants along with a few of the townsfolk.

This is the third book I have read in this series, and it just gets better with each one. You have ghosts, witches, and now vampires. A man dies in one of Alf's cottages and the Mori is involved, but know one knows how or why. Alf is tasked with the job of dispensing his belongings on top of booking a wedding at the Inn the same day the grand opening is scheduled. She had no idea she had just booked the Inn out to vampires. Gwen, Alf's dead grandmother hires a french chef that speaks French and no English, making getting any food a challenge, especially when Gwen disappears after learning vampires are the Inn's first paying guests. People in the village start getting sick and turn on Alf blaming her for the illness. The bride arrives at the Inn and things get even more intriguing, she was not what Alf expected. I can not say anymore without giving away the outcome, but I can guarantee you will like the story if this sounds like your idea of a good book. I am leaving a review because I want too, and was given a ARC copy of this book by the Author on Booksprout.

Alf is on her way to deliver invitations to a party on Halloween for the reopening of the Inn. At one house she discovers a dead body and is shook up when she finds a Mori orb in the dead man;s room above the body. She flees to her local friend and calls DS Gilchrist. During the questioning he asks her what actually occurred. She tells him about the Mori orb. Now not only does she have a party to get prepared, she has to discover why the Mori are back and hopefully keep DS Gilchrist. alive. Alf finds out there is another person who sees ghosts. Then her grandmama hires a cook, another ghost, from France who speaks no English. She;s also said yes to opening the whole inn up for a wedding which she finds out is for a vampire family! Good

When Alf agrees to host a vampire wedding at the opening celebration of her Inn, she has no idea what she has let herself in for.
The vampires are unruly, there’s a death and illness in the village, and if that wasn’t all, there appears to be a witch hunt going on!

This quick read sees Alf making some new friends and dealing with an old enemy, as well as troubleshooting the fanged shenanigans.
There’s a lot going on, so it shouldn’t be entirely surprising that of the mysteries in the book, precisely none are actually solved! In this case, I suspect that one of them is actually part of the ongoing background plot, while the other is probably destined to remain a mystery forever.
It doesn’t matter though, because the Wonky Inn is plenty entertaining despite it all, and Jeannie Wycherley’s imaginative world is a fun one to read.

Recommended for paranormal cosy mystery lovers.

Once again there is something wonky going on in the small village of Whittlecombe and are Alf's new guest for the wedding she's hosting the reason for all the flue like symptom's and then there is the murder Alf has a very interesting life. When Alf decides to invite people to her grand reopening of her Inn she stumbles across a rather unpleasant smell at Mr. Pearce's. The Mori seem to be back a rather unpleasant enemy. She also has to get her very first wedding at the Inn off with out a stake i mean a hitch but no worries there already dead so no problems write. So solve the murder figure out what the Mori are up to and keep her guest from draining the town dry also where is Grandma Gwynn and why is she missing hmm. Love these books cant put them down once i start them.

a wedding not to attend!

Another brilliantly wonky book ! I am not a fan of elaborate weddings and tis one is a prime example. Instead of a bridzilla it is the groom who has all the drama including a fight between his two girlfriends , a murder of one of the guests and a freak weather storm that threatens to ruin the midnight / outdoor wedding not to mention kill a few people. Ghosts, vampires. witches and angry neighbours all combine to make the opening of wonky inn a very memorable affaire If you are a fan of fun paranormal mysteries this is one series you wont want to miss

Original and refreshing. Set in an attention needing old English countryside, the Wonky Inn has been revamped (sorry, I could not resist) and is ready to open on October 31st. After an outflow of cash for the remodel a last minute request to host a wedding on opening night seems too good to be true, and difficult to pass up. Fortunately for Alf she hires a very capable manager just in the nick of time.
I do not read much vampire fiction, I prefer witchy tales and ghost stories. This is a delightful mixture of all things paranormal.
I am not sure the inn will be able to stay open for guests after this visit, but what a fun adventure this book was. It includes an ongoing mystery I am eager to return for.

the really funny thing about this series is that the scariest characters are usually mostly human.

Forest destroyers, illegally appropriating magic folks, land thieves....

although, I must admit the evil more than a little murderous energy blobs are pretty spooky too.

a generous helping of ghosts, love, betrayal , and accepting the unusual to fight together and survive - or not.

A fun and funny series, this book with an appropriately wonky wedding, can easily be read as a standalone - plenty of background is provided on key characters.

Embrace the unusual, and the fun - and mourn a bit of tragedy - and you will love this book and this series!

Revisiting the Wonky Inn, this story is just as adventurous as the ones before it. Alf astounds me with her courage and determination to keep her Wonky Inn and make it stand out. And before long, Alf finds herself knee deep in preparations for her Wonky Inn's grand opening on top of a wedding? What was she thinking, right? Not this mention this isn't any normal wedding, it's a vampire wedding!

Poor Alf, as if she doesn't have enough problems, people from the village are spreading vicious rumours about her and her enchanting inn.

People are never what they seem and this couldn't be farther from the truth in this wonderful, refreshing series based on supernatural beings and a most loveable Mr. Hoo.

Another sleepless night!

Well, I started reading this book about 3 1/2 hours ago, and once again I had to read it all in one go!
Alf is now rushing around to ready the inn to open on Halloween, she has her motley crew working hard to put the finishing touches to the inn, when she gets a letter asking her to host a wedding, she agrees only to be completely stunned when the guests are not exactly what she was hoping for. Will the inn open on time and will the wedding go ahead? As if that wasn’t enough there is a death in the village are the Mori back and is Alf’s safety once again at risk?
Grab a copy of book 1 and follow Alf as she moves to Devon to pursue a new life, the series is available on kindle unlimited, you won’t be disappointed.

Jeannie Wycherley has done it again! Weird Wedding at Wonky Inn is a delightful blend of cozy mystery, supernatural shenanigans, and laugh-out-loud moments. I absolutely loved returning to Alf’s wonderfully weird world—this series just keeps getting better!

Kim Bretton’s narration is a perfect match for the quirky tone of the story. Her character voices are spot-on, and she brings such warmth and personality to every scene. I found myself smiling through most of the book and completely immersed in the story.

If you’re looking for a feel-good listen with heart, humor, and a touch of the otherworldly, this book (and series!) is a gem. Can’t wait for the next one!

Alf's hard working ghost clean up crew has the Inn almost ready when the opportunity to host a wedding on opening day comes along. She agrees before finding out it's a vampire wedding, and does her best to pull them both off. I think the stories just get better and I look forward to more. The characters, good and bad, are believable and her relationship with the village adds underlying interest to each installment. This book can be read stand alone because there is enough background added so you can follow along.

The story starts like a typical witchy cozy mystery, with a witch finding a body. One would think this is a normal mystery story, but one would be far from the truth. The main story here is the re-opening of an inn - for humans and supernaturals - and the inexperienced owner agreeing to holding a wedding there, where the majority of the guests is a family and friends of vampires, who behave rather badly.
The story is made interesting with funny dialogues, crazy situations and a few events outside the wedding.
Highly entertaining and a lot of fun to read.

Audiobook: I was as entertained by this book as much as the other ones in the series. I was curious when I saw that Alfhild agreed to host a vampire wedding at the inn, but I appreciated her desire to promote her inn. I appreciated that the author put her own spin on the characters of vampires. I liked that there were surprises that I never saw coming and some amusing moments. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I enjoyed Kim Bretton's narration as she read the scenes so skillfully. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

Audiobook review:
The narrator was very good. A pleasant voice with different ones for the characters.

Story review:
A fun paranormal story with a friendly witch who is also a ghost whisperer. The many ghosts are described in great detail, are from many different past time frames, and some staff the Wonky Inn. This book brings us a vampire wedding occurring the same night of the inn's grand opening. There is trouble in the village including a dead body plus the vampires are causing havoc at the Inn. Alf is doing her best but feeling overwhelmed.

Alf is excited to book the whole inn for a wedding before they’ve even officially opened, until she discovers it’s a vampire wedding. Alf and her staff race to prepare while Alf also needs to cope with unusual events happening in the village. Luckily she has her friends to help. Alf is such a wonderful character and her Wonky Inn ghost staff is delightful. Charity is a nice addition and it’s nice that George is in on the secret now. I look forward to each book in this series and have loved them all. I received a free copy of this book via and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This third book in the series Wonky Inn has very well-developed characters, many of whom I have developed great affection towards. The world is well-described and holds many amazing tales. I throughly enjoyed reading it so much that I could not put it down until I read the last word. I highly recommend it and although each book could be read as a stand-alone, why would you want to miss the excitement and entertainment of them when read in order. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
