Veronica Yorke lives quietly in the south of England, hoping to forget all about her years as Madame Veronica, a professional psychic. Her past comes galloping to catch up with her when her goddaughter, Josie Harte, appears in her village, newly engaged to Piers Maxted, the son of one of Lymhurst's prominent families.
Seeing Josie, Veronica is struck by a premonition of murder, but when she tries to warn the beautiful young girl, Josie laughs it off. Soon, Josie is murdered, strangled in a folly in the Maxteds' garden. The sceptical Inspector Hargrave suspects Charlotte Faudin, the Maxteds' housekeeper, a woman with a sordid past, but Veronica suspects otherwise.
Veronica must unmask a clever, cunning killer, all the while trying to keep her past hidden.
Murder Foretold is the first in a series of mystery novellas featuring Veronica Yorke, psychic detective. The second, Murder of a Memory, will be published soon.
Nicely woven and written in the style of Patricia Wentworth and Dorothy L Sayers but could have done with a bit more warmth injected into it. It just made me think that it was a bit clinical. Good characters, well developed but a bit too cold and restrained. Would be good to read a full novel by the author. She had managed to put her past behind her and now lived a quite life. Until that fateful day when her goddaughter came to visit. She had just gotten engaged to the local heir of the manor. Now as she was leaving a casual touch led her to have a vision. A vision of the young woman's death. She tried to warn her but failed and next day brought about the news that she had died. Can she rest if she doesn't investigate? Add in lies, deception, poison, a forbidden love and lives lived on false images. Will any of these help her to find the culprit?
