If you've ever wondered how singers and instrumentalists in the 18th and early 19th century were so easily able to improvise ornaments and variations and how the composers from the late baroque, classical and bel canto eras were able to compose so much music of such high quality so easily, Baragwanath provides the explanation. This is a fascinating work. I will be coming back to this book, especially to try to master the hexachord system. But this is a must read for anyone who studies music from about 1680 to 1830.
