BLOWBACK: A "Cadillac" Holland Mystery

Rate this book
Every story needs a beginning.

The story of Louisiana State Police Detective Cadillac Holland's legend began with what should have been a simple fugitive case. It's hard to find a man who doesn't want to be found, and harder still when you have trouble telling the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina from the bombed out streets of Baghdad you left behind in an ambush that nearly took your life.

Detective Holland is building a reputation for leaving a trail of unintended consequences in his path, but he will always get his man.

My relationship with New Orleans began with a job cooking in a cafe on Bourbon Street at the age of seventeen. My foodservice resume now includes many of New Orleans’ iconic music and dining destinations. I no longer reside in New Orleans full time but I keep to the expat creed of “Be a New Orleanian wherever you are.”
A devoted reader of detective and crime novels, I have worked as a chef on a boat traveling the inland waterways since Hurricane Katrina and began thinking up stories about a detective living in post-Katrina New Orleans, which I now write in my spare time.
My life is divided between working on the water and preserving a Victorian-era home in Hannibal, Missouri that I share with my wife and our rescue pets, which include a neurotic wolfhound/terrier mix and too many cats.

MY REVIEW:4.5*

This is a crime/ mystery story set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Detective Cooter Holland is charged with finding Michael Ferris , he is on the run. Ferris was involved in a shooting, but the gun was found to be linked elsewhere. Holland is called in as the witnesses to the shootings are being threatened by Ferris. Police resources are stretched and because Holland has essential skills from his time as a Military Intelligence agent, he is the ideal man for the job. He has his own style and way of doing things , it has worked well for him in the past, why not now? As Holland delves further into the investigation, other leads and coincidences crop up, leading to a much larger case than originally thought. Things twist and turn, taking him down different paths.

This is a well told story with some very well described and good characters. The way their stories have been intertwined throughout the book is very good. The author has included details of the time Holland spent in Baghdad with his friend Tony, who also has a part to play in the investigation. The way Hurricane Katrina left her impact on the people and environment in this area is also addressed. Telling how resources have been stretched, also the immediate impact on people's lives and families was an interesting inclusion.

This is a prequel to in a series of books. At the time of writing my review there are 3 more available in this series.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well paced and was a page turner right the way through, with a very satisfying ending. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of crime and mystery. Look forward to more by this author.

I would like to thank the author for bringing this book to my attention and sending me a copy. My review is my own honest and unbiased opinion.

This is a police procedural and I love police procedurals, having once been a police procedural myself (operator, not recipient). While I enjoy them, I generally take a critical eye, looking for the errors that tell me this guy has no idea what he’s doing. The good news: this guy knows what he’s doing. The bad news: what he’s doing is a little murky.

I have to caveat this because the author, H Max Hiller, and I belong to the same publishing house, Indies United Publishing. That does not ever change my reviews; it just means I have no friends over there. But in the interest of clarity, know that I have an association with this author and his books. Not that that means anything: I have an association with relatives but that doesn’t stop us from slapping each other around.

This is the first in a series involving Louisiana State Police Investigator ‘Cadillac’ Holland, and is the book in which he acquires the ‘Cadillac’ moniker replacing his real first name of Cooter and, thank God, because who wants to go around being called Cooter? Parents must have been Dukes of Hazzard fans. In the course of the book, Cooter obtains a Cadillac in a manner that warms the cockles of my anti-bureaucratic heart, effectively turning this lovely car into his work vehicle, all expenses paid by the boss, Captain Avery, who acts like he doesn’t like Cooter, er, Cadillac, in that time honored detective trope of supervisor versus smart aleck maverick cop underling. But you can tell Avery does like him, is just playing a required role. What’s better, Cadillac knows that Avery knows he’s a good cop and is given subsequent slack, hence the off-the-books work car.

Cadillac is assigned to locate a fugitive named Michael Ferris, who got into a gunfight in a local bar in a manner that looks very much like self-defense, okay, routine, but the gun that Ferris used was used in another crime in California and, hello, what’s going on here? A lot, as you'll discover, with gun runners and streetgangs and chop shops entering the fray. Cadillac has to track down Ferris before others do, and it’s not easy, given the post-Katrina state of New Orleans and vicinity. It’s not unlike tracking a deer across a volcano-devastated landscape.

The murkiness comes in at several points. Jurisdiction, for one, because this looks clearly like a New Orleans PD and/or Sheriff case, and maybe a Fed case and, yep, the Feds show up being typical Feds and then they’re not being typical and that’s nice. Feds always get a bad rap in local PD stories and it’s good to see Hiller not buying into that. Well, not completely. Cadillac’s actual status with the State Police is a bit foggy, too, as is his best friend, Tony, who might be some kind of Iraqi interpreter/special ops guy who worked with Cadillac in Baghdad and something happened there and here they are, in New Orleans together. Have no idea what that’s about.

Hopefully the fog clears in the subsequent Cadillac Holland novels, of which there are now five. I think. And if they are like this one, then you are assured of interesting cases and unorthodox procedures and torqued off supervisors, who aren’t really torqued off. Fun.

Blowback introduces a New Orleans cop, “Cadillac” Holland, a Iraq War vet back home in New Orleans after the destructive Hurricane Katrina, and assigned the seemingly straightforward task of tracking down a fugitive. Holland, used to tracking terrorists, should find this an easy assignment, but the more he digs, the more he thinks this fugitive may not be the biggest bad guy in this case.

Holland tugs at loose ends all over New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the southernmost parishes to follow a trail of lawlessness in an area run amok after Katrina.

Fans of James Lee Burke’s detective Dave Robicheaux will like Cadillac Holland. And the New Orleans setting could only be written by someone who’s lived there. I recommend highly.

This dynamic start to what I think will be a great series that had me quickly swiping pages. Set in New Orleans, the area is a character and part of the plot adding an enjoyable dimension to the story. The story jumps the reader in the middle of Detective Holland’s life with some of the back story filling in as you go along.

I liked this character, but what I really found compelling were the minor characters supporting him. I hope to see them again in the next book in this series. This is a very solid start to a series I look forward to continuing.

Every story has to start somewhere and this is Detective Cadillac Hollands first case . What should of been a simple case of finding a fugitive is getting harder by the minute . The man just doesn't want to be found and when you start to rethink bringing him in might get him killed and noone wants to help him out . Just might get him and the man he needs to bring in killed. He will get his man one way or another .
Ok we get to finally see Holland's first case and how he became such a great detective . Welcome to New Orleans and the case that started it all . Cadillac is a very complex man who spent time in military intelligence and that makes for a detective with some really great instincts . He has a great group of people to help him out through out the case. Tony is his best friend and they were together in Bagdad together . He is really like Cadillac's sounding board when it comes to figuring everything out.
This is a prequel to the series and we get to see the characters at the beginning . The author takes us on a wild ride that will have you thinking the whole way through. The author throws us so many twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat . The author did a great job mixing the main characters past and present together seamlessly . I love a great mystery and this one did not disappoint at all. So if you want a good read for you summer reading list check it out .

Having read one or two of the Cadillac Holland Mystery books, out of order might I add, it was fun to go back tot he beginning to see Detective Holland when he is trying to find his place with the Louisiana State Police. What should've just been an easy fugitive find turned into something more than even Cadillac's superiors even considered. However, this seems to be the case when it comes to Detective Holland. Nothing is ever easy and he has a knack for finding more trouble before he even solves the one mystery assigned to him.
One of the things I really do like about Detective Holland's character is he doesn't leave any stone unturned. He's also not afraid to create or hope he creates a little chaos if it means that getting to the bottom of a case he's working on. The way this man's mind works is quite fascinating.

When it comes to the general feel and vibes about this book, I love the author's attention to details about the city/state and the food that New Orleans is famous for. I remember as a kid going to New Orleans every year and it was always a lively city with food my family and I looked forward to. Definitely makes you want to put everything aside and grab a bowl of gumbo or maybe a po'boy!

Starting with a great introduction that sets the mood of the story as well the main character's development:

"I have answered to a number of things: nicknames, military ranks, and more or less profane epithets in my thirty-seven years. I have preferred each and every one of them to the name Cooter Holland, which my father bestowed upon me at birth in honor of his hometown in the boot-heel of Missouri".

The author successfully describes with suspence scene after scene, plot twist after plot twist and manages to capture not only the sentimental element of the situation after Hurricane Katrina but also to make the reader mentaly depict New Orleans setting.

What is more, the development of side characters such as Holland's sister and the way he manages to make the unimportant characters actually important gives this hard-boiled detective story the 5-star.

This detective mystery novel is part of a series which I can't wait to further explore.

Blowback is the first book in the Cadillac Holland Mystery series and it was great to get his back story in greater detail. These author can literally make paint drying on the sidewalk sound interesting and intriguing. The look into Cooter Holland's life in counterintelligence and his and Tony's past really gave depth to this story. The author's world building skills are extrordinary. His descriptive images of the sights and smells of New Orleans after Katrina hit really reasonated with me and gave another layer to this almost police journal story. The different agencies and layers, twists and turns that Cadillac brings to the case that turns into so much more than it was will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will not put this book down and will want to immediately pick up anything else this author writes.

Blowback by H. Max Hiller is a throwback to the classic detective stories, set in New Orleans after Katrina.
Gun running, conniving families, and government officers all make the book interesting.
If you've been to the area, many of the sites and restaurants would be familiar.
I've been there a few times, but have to admit I got lost a bit in the numerous locations discussed.
The story follows Cooter Holland as he chases his prey, not always following orders.
Entertaining and good read. 4 stars

Cooter "Cadillac" Holland is an engaging character that I enjoyed "meeting." Although fiction, this novel has numerous insider perspectives about New Orleans. The story was good. I did have some trouble keeping track of the many characters, but I was not able to read the book straight through. (I think reading it straight through would have helped me follow all the characters better.) I am a big fan of novels in which the setting is crucial to the story -- almost a character in itself. This one fits the bill. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

I think this book has convinced me that I may just love mysteries after all. Realistic storytelling with just the right balance of action and dialogue. The author had some of the most descriptive writing I've ever read and as a result it felt like I was seeing the story play right out in front of me. I watch way more TV then I'd like to admit so I'm usually great at predicting what happens next but this one threw me for a loop. The suspense of it all had me on the edge of my seat and I can't wait to read more.

After an incident in the military that almost took his life, Cooter decides to go home and join the NOPD. His demons make any mentor he has walk away. Chief Avery decides to assign him to be a bloodhound to find a suspect who wants to remain hidden. The closer he gets to his suspect, the more he believes that some even more dangerous people need to be found. Will he find who's responsible? How will his future law enforcement career be impacted by this case?

The first in this mystery series introduces "Cadillac". a gutsy, pound the pavement detective. In his assigned case to catch a fugitive he starts to unravel something more sinister. The setting of Post-Katrina New Orleans and the surrounding cast of characters add life to the story. This page turner is packed with suspense and would thrill any mystery lover.

Blowback by H. Max Hiller follows Detective Cooter Holland as he is assigned to locate the subject who has killed two people and has threatened the owners of a nightclub that witnessed the murders. His vivid descriptions of New Orleans and the characters he created kept me in suspense throughout. For people who enjoy a good mystery.

It takes a special kind of person.

The New Orleans environment requires different perspective to be an effective investigator. So much history and cumulative damage obscure things that might be clearer in other places. Cadillac Holland has exactly the connections and knowledge to get to the facts.

"I have answered to a number of things: nicknames, military ranks, and more or less profane epitaphs in my thirty-seven years."

Cue voice-over on black and white gritty film role, and that's the feel you get from BLOWBACK, H. Max Hiller's hard-boiled detective novel. 'Cadillac' Holland is assigned to a case by Avery, his boss, who knows well Holland will not do anything by the book. While not fast-paced in any way, the pacing is perfect for this genre. As clues drop throughout the narrative, the reader is encouraged to piece the case together right alongside of Holland as he pursues one lead after the next.

Not only did I enjoy being an armchair detective alongside of Holland, but I also enjoyed the character development. Hiller has well developed minor characters in Avery, Tony, and Holland's sister, Tullip. He created each with their unique quirks and ways of interacting with Holland that made the story feel real. Not to mention the care he took to create a post-Katrina New Orleans in which a reader could immerse themselves.

I look forward to more by H. Max Hiller and his 'Cadillac' Holland series.

Detective Cooter Holland is a detective in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He has extensive skills from his time in Military Intelligence. He is the kind of guy a girl could fall for and a guy would be intimidated by. Holland and his boss, Avery, do not always see eye-to-eye but Avery looks the other way because Holland gets results.

The story is smooth and clues appear throughout that encourage the reader to put the puzzle together. Hiller’s post-Katrina New Orleans is spot on and brings an edginess to the setting. The story feels real and the reader is easily pulled in with the terrific characters Hiller has created. The reader will not be ambivalent about the characters as each one has uncommon traits.

Detective Holland is tasked with what should have been a routine fugitive case but turns out to be anything but. The case turns complicated and the reader is swept out in the fast-paced edge of the seat ride to finding the fugitive and solving the intertwined mystery that pops up. A very fun read for any fan of mystery.

Post Katrina New Orleans corruption and greed are no match for the likes of Detective 'Cadillac' Holland.

Hard headed, Detective Holland solves a case within a case once again. H. Max Hiller has penned another twisty turny mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You'll find yourself smiling as his best friend and confidant, Tony, pulls a fast one on the crooks with the help of Holland and his trusting attorney sister. You'll be caught up in the drama, cheering for the good guys, and laughing at the antics the detective uses to get the job done.

I could 100% see this being the pilot of a TV show. I definitely need to check out the rest of the books. This was a great story, and I absolutely loved Holland! He kind of reminded me of Gibbs from NCIS with a few of the things he did (but I don't want to give any spoilers). Following Holland around New Orleans chasing down Ferris and uncovering the shady goings-on kept me turning pages, and I was a little sad to return to the real world. I look forward to reading more adventures of Detective Holland!
