Legends of the Storm #5

Master of Storms

Rate this book
The old eddas speak of dreki—fabled creatures who haunt the depths of Iceland's volcanoes and steal away fair maidens.

Solveig wants none of such myths. Mated—and spurned—by the devilishly handsome Prince Marduk, the furious dreki princess refuses to be the laughingstock of her court. Marduk will beg for her forgiveness. Or he will die.

A political alliance that ended in ruins...

Marduk's evil mother bound him to mate with one of the daughters of King Harald, but when Marduk chooses the fierce-tongued Solveig, even he is surprised. The princess is known for her ruthlessness—the son her father never had—and when he promises to be a mate in name only and leaves her alone and wanting in the mating bed, she swears revenge.

But there is something about Solveig's wild nature that stirs the heart of his dreki. And with his court and family at the mercy of a powerful curse, he needs all the allies he can get. But can she forgive him for playing recklessly with her fate? And will two clashing hearts ever learn to yield to each other?

I knew I would be crying ugly tears at the end as the series is not finished yet. And I knew I would hate that the release date for the next one is not even planned in any way.
And yet I went there and devoured the book. And it was good!!

Now to the review... I'm distracted these days and don't have much time for reading (or reflecting), so thank you, darling Leila, for reading it with me! Our conversations made me remember everything in the book better. I still have no idea what to say. Okay, here goes.

In the beginning of the series, I wasn't sure I would like these main characters. There was something off about both of them to me, which is probably just my personal thing.
Yet here, I loved them; in all their messiness and in all that annoying (at first) back-and-forth. Loved them even more in the second part, because this author writes redemption wonderfully. Even if a couple of things were predictable, some were questionable, I'm not gonna mention anything, because all in all, I couldn't stop reading and it was a great addition to the series.

**I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

The love-hate relationship between Solveig and Marduk was fascinating to read about. Their situation became more layered than I thought it would be. Originally, I was on Solveig’s side regarding what happened to her and Marduk several years ago. In the last book, it was obvious how much he embarrassed and hurt her with the stupid song he made about her. I lowkey wanted her to get her vengeance on him. However, after getting the whole story about what exactly happened, I realized they both made mistakes. She pushed him away, and understandably so with her fear and refusal of love and his overly charming personality. And he wrote a stupid song about her after the repeated rejection – ALSO understandably so especially after she stabbed him. They both messed up and misunderstood each other. It was a shame, but they were clearly immature at the time. They did not know what they wanted and wasn’t willing to compromise. Not to mention the circumstantial issue of his mother trying to kill him. I felt like normally I’d feel bitter about these kind of “just missed it/miscommunication” issues, but I felt like the years allowed them to mature and establish themselves.

Reading their scenes was amusing. They were nonstop fighting. It was a true love-hate relationship. They were competitive and over-the-top, but it worked because they matched each other energy. I liked that they both respected each other ultimately. And then, there were scenes where they were vulnerable and opened up about their trauma related to their parents. They had different stories – she came from a loving family but she lost her mom. On the other hand, he had a psycho mom, a murdered father, and initially distant siblings. However, what they had in common was that they both went through some painful moments due to their love for their family. It was nice having them see each other eye-to-eye. She was no longer just the fierce, violent warrior. And he was no longer just the silver-tongued, restless adventurer. In addition, I liked that they both had to overcome their fears together. She had to learn not to lash out and push away people in fear of finding love. And he had to learn to make peace with his family and no longer run away every other moment. Ultimately, their relationship was passionate, complicated, but also filled with connection and understanding.

On a side note, I adored Solveig’s family. Her dad was the sweetest! And I want to see more of Siv. I hope she’ll get her own book.

I liked that the plot kept on getting more and more intense. There were some events that happened around midpoint that were almost finale material. Some books like to save those big events only for the last quarter or even 10% of a book, so I appreciated that this book was eventful through and through. These events allowed the characters to show how brave and smart they were, and gave them a chance to develop. Furthermore, it was nice exploring the Zilittu clan. I especially enjoyed meeting Draco and Andromeda. They had an interesting relationship and I honestly hope they get their own book in the future! Also, there were interesting developments with the elves plot in this one. A lot of major events happened, and now, I can’t wait for the future books to see how it will all unfold. Overall, this book was thoroughly entertaining and eventful from beginning to end.

4 stars. I really enjoyed seeing the layers get peeled back for Solveig and Marduk. They both had such strong personalities, so it was nice to see the softer sides to them. It made sense why they were the way they were. A lot of crazy things happened in this book and I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the 2nd half. There were some crumbs placed here that started getting me excited for future books.

Another EXHILARATING read from Bec McMaster. Marduk and Solveig relationship is intense, passionate, combustible, and delicious. I LOVED every minute of their love and war *grin*. Especially because we finally understand why Solveig hates Marduk, or why Marduk cannot feel the bond. The parts where they opened up emotionally to each other are the BEST.

Anyway, this universe definitely expanded from the previous books. The eternal drekis's enemies, the alfars finally make appearance after Marduk's twin sister, Ishtar, opens the gate to Alfheimr. One of the biggest enemies () but it's not finished for all of our characters. In fact, this one has quite a CLIFFHANGER for a couple of main characters

And I'm not a fan of cliffie like that, which is why I cannot rate it higher

Wow I didn't think the author could top the last book because it was such a fun read but this takes enemies to lovers and completely turns the idea on its head. Marduk has always been the apparently care free, wandering Prince but even he is somewhat nonplussed by his vicious, albeit spawned Mate. Solveig has vowed to have Marduks heart after he so cruelly made her the laughing stock of her father's Court and even has a box ready and lined to put it in ! So when for political reasons the couple have to at least appear cordial in public you know that behind closed doors sparks will fly and that dear reader is most definitely an understatement .
The author kept the sexual tension running high throughput this book which I enjoyed because it would have felt wrong to have the couple fall into each other's arms too easily. What really helped bring everything to life was the way occasionally we would get an older scene which really opened this readers eyes to just why certain characters act the way they do. I won't rehash the story but I absolutely loved that not only do we get favourite characters from previous books but new Dreki appear here and yes their love lives are already messed up so there's definitely more stories to be told. Speaking of stories as this ends everything hangs in the balance with two key characters lost to their loved ones. I think the next book has to reveal some very big secrets and I am already anxious to learn more. Plus if like me you are a hopeless romantic then Marduks final scene will leave you with the biggest smile on your face !
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I just love this series!
With series that go on and on and on I m always expecting to get bored, but in this case I m more intrigued than ever. Next book cannot come soon enough!!

The 5th book, Solveign and Marduk take the scene. I knew, from last book experience, this two characters are going to either make one hell of a war or fuck like nobody's business. I was right on both accounts lol 🤣🤣🤣 Two storms clashing.

“I see the storm within you, Solveig. And I want to ride it.”

“From the moment she’d laid eyes upon him. He was both threat and curse. Passion and oblivion.
And she knew—deep in her heart—that he was her ruin.“

This couple: perfection ! the passion, the banter, the chemistry , truly enemies to lovers ! Not one moment when I felt bored or like skimming. The plot gets better and better , new intriguing characters that hopefully will get their own book , andddd so many questions still unanswered.

“What’s wrong?” Marduk’s smile made her want to kick his teeth in as they broke apart for a brief moment. “Were you not expecting me to match you?”
“I will admit I’m a little surprised, considering you look like a silk handkerchief. Pretty, but ultimately useless.”

As with the last book, this one also features a grumpy heroine and sunshine hero. This may be the reason I struggled mightily with this book after breezing through the last four. Maybe I'm burned out on fierce, strong angry heroines? But I loved Bryn (the heroine of book four) I think my problem here was that Solveig was stubborn and proud to the point of idiocy and also until almost the very last page. She didn't give an inch. Ever. He bent over backward for her and okay that's cool but relationships are about mutual giving and taking and not just taking. She was a LOT. Marduk is a cute himbo but there wasn't much else to him. I never got invested in them separately or together.

Solveig and Marduk were meant to be betrothed a decade ago. He got drunk and made up a song insulting her (it was really tame for the outsized reaction he got from her) she was hurt deeply and offended. So she held a grudge for TEN motherforking years and tried to assassinate him because of it. When he goes back to her for plot reasons, she's horrible and promises the goddess to bring back his heart. Yes, she's determined to murder him. For an insult. Which fine. I'll buy it, if there's any progress in the relationship and her attitude but none of the progress happened until almost 90% in. By then I wanted to write an insulting song so Solveig could murder me and put me out of my misery.

This one is loooong and really plot heavy. All the previous characters play a role. There's just so much going on that the romance is completely eclipsed by the plot. That being said, this one is the spiciest of the bunch. Unfortunately all the sex scenes didn't make up for the fact that I never felt any connection or chemistry between Marduk and Solveig. He had more chemistry with his sister than her 😬

So this one is probably my least fave of the bunch although so much happens here that I can't wait for the next book. Beware the love story is concluded but the plot ends in a huge cliffhanger. Also, this book can't be read out of order. The worldbuilding is fantastic and kept me from DNF'ing.

Tropes:

Forced proximity
Sick comfort

Bec McMaster stands apart in her ability to create uniquely combative couples for each new book in an extended series. A few have been redeemed baddies, while others are simply holding on tight to their independence or past hurts or are damaged in some way. Regardless, no couple feels like another one. McMaster NEVER phones in a character. It is clear that she works out each individual's motivations, history, influences, etc. And then she works out how the individual impulses of the characters form the chrysalis of what becomes "the couple." Each couple is always interesting, always inspiring, always fascinating, and, most importantly, always different.

Marduk is the playboy prince, until we learn a few things about him that make him not such a rogue. Solveig is the warrior queen-in-waiting, supposedly harsh and focused and indomitable. Well, she is those things, but it isn't all that defines her. She is also honorable and dedicated and loves her family.

Together, these two clash. Youth, thoughtless words, pride and humiliation turn an attraction bitter. I liked the flashbacks, because it was important to see Marduk and Solveig needed ten years piled onto their life experience to be truly prepared to be leaders and lovers. Nothing is smooth sailing for these two. Fully half the book is spent at the "enemy" stage. Then they are lovers, but only in the end are they friends.

McMaster changed up her plot path in book five. She tends to set up a "honeymoon" phase, where after the hero and heroine overcome some obstacles, have a few adventures, and get to see each other's positive qualities under duress, they fall into bed and become an inseparable couple. Marduk and Solveig had their low-action "honeymoon" phase at the beginning, but since they really hadn't had much time to see each other's good qualities under duress, they bickered, and bickered. And bickered some more. Old hurts were definitely in the way of hot romance. So in the second half of the book, when the action picked up precipitously, Marduk and Solveig were finally ready to scorch the sheets. Flames were coming off the cotton, it was so hot. But getting to the inseparable part was proving a problem for them.

Maybe it was so difficult to become a couple because these two were both trying to be the alpha in the relationship. Solveig is storm and fury and pure warrior. Marduk is wily and prideful and used to calling the shots. There was a lot in the way of the lovers moving forward, and that rocky path wasn't helped by undead Amadea, a scheming dragon king, clan politics or vicious elves.

This book was imminently entertaining, flaming hot, and had unexpected character arcs for Marduk and Solveig. My only complaints are that nothing about important secondary characters surprised me, the ending possessed a stronger cliffhanger vibe than usual, and every so often a wrong word is used. Beautific is not a word, try beatific.

Marduk and Solveig's arc story already stole my attention from Tormund's book "Storm of Fury" and to said I can't wait to read their story is an understatement. Do Bec McMaster do them justice? Sure, she is! I can feel how she want to write the story of the brat and rascal dreki princes and the scorned dreki Queen in the making, and yes, she deliver.

Well...maybe the cliffie ending kinda lower my rating (just a bit, haha). Because I must wait..like what? A year again? AGAINNN? WHYYYY??? I wait (im)patiently for Marduk-Solveig's story and now I must wait for the next book, Queen of Lightning??

Back to the book, Marduk-Solveig arc story is pretty much filled with angst, anger, hurt and pain. Pretty much I had expected because both of MCs had bad history. I also realize that this is the first book that feature full dreki pairing. Sirius and Malin ofc didn't cound because Malin is drekling and I won't said further because, lel, spoiler. So the thing with mated pair thingie not only just the male that know it, the females also can feel it too although McMaster write the male always know first (heh, mated pair trope y'all!). McMaster really fleshed out both Marduk and Solveig characters. That despite Marduk's rakish charming persona, his heart was guarded and he also have family issues although he already reunited with Rurik and Ardis. His bond with Ishtar are explored further, show that he really care about his twin so much.

In the other side, we get to know why Solveig is so hostile to Marduk, even from the first time she met him. Why she fight him until the bitter end and how is hard for her to accept her own feeling. Lol, Solveig is what I called as "tsundere" aka hot and cold type, although she is lean to the cold more. But like Marduk, Solveig has her own reason, and why she don't want to be mated aka shackled to Marduk. McMaster kinda address about fated mated pair trope here, with although it considered as blessing, sometimes it can be a curse too. I liked that even Solveig written as cold, unapologetic woman, kinda high and mighty, she also has weakness. And even she doesn't want to admit it first, she slowly learn to cooperate with another, learn that's it's okay to show a moment of weakness and let another take her responsibilities while she recover.

The first part is pretty much filled with Marduk and Solveig's fight that for me...both are like teenager that try to throw punch to each other. But to my delight, I like that Marduk grovel first. He said that he sorry and not that the defensive kind of sorry. He's truly sorry to hurt Solveig at the past. But I liked that Solveig also didn't go easy to him. Yes, she forgive him, but didn't mean she will accept Marduk fully. Imagine how relieve I am when reading the part that Solveig finally open her heart. I'll be like..well about time. In romance books I read, I usually lean more to the heroine journey, but Master of Storms is about both Solveig and Marduk. I liked that McMaster fleshed them both, make them as equal, although I liked Marduk better. Sigh, McMaster sure can write dreamy heroes (except Kincaid. I don't know why some readers like him, lol!!!), and the way Marduk try to win Solveig's heart is the best part. I mean, he woo her with all his heart, so shameless, so pervert, but also show that he care a lot. He also confess first (although at first have his heart guarded). I always have weakness for a hero that confess his love first, lol.

For steamy part, IMO..I'm happy and well-spent (lol, I sound like pervert). It's steamy, sexy, but also full of tender moment. There's angry foreplay, sword-play as foreplay, angry kisses, teasing kisses, wow-this-is-so-hot kisses and foreplay, submission-roleplay-but-errr-not-really sex scene, tender love making, and well...I think I already got my fill, hahaha. McMaster sure can write a good sexual tension moment

The entire plot and worldbuilding is good like usual. McMaster now introduced us to another dreki clan, the Zillitu. The way she named the current Zillitu king,by Draco and his estranged twin with Scorpius kinda make me wondering if this somehow related to Harry Potter, lol. Also, the stake is now higher since the dreki archenemies, the alfar attack them. To make matter worse, surprise, surprise, dearest mother Amadea is still wreak havoc and ready to ruin Marduk and his families life once more. Not too much deus ex machinae ending and well , but then, boom! Cliffhanger ending!!

Master of Storms again show how McMaster can masterfully write fantasy romance full with action, world building, some angst, fleshed out and well-develop characters. I just hope she's not that cruel with another cliffhanger ending, although Marduk and Solveig got their guaranteed HEA. (and the way how Solveig's oath to bring Marduk's heart to her court so she can be accepted solved is clever, not to said...amusing, lel).

I bought this as soon as I saw the newsletter. I was hesitant as soon as I paid, scared that the book would disappoint me in very specific ways. With enemies to lovers tropes, it seems authors have this tendency to bring a strong women down and the arrogant man steamrolls her. All I ask is that sometimes that arrogance is tested and the woman stays strong, which McMaster did here BEAUTIFULLY. This is better than anything I could have expected. She masterfully wove plot, romance, character development, and world building AGAIN. She’s such a consistently great writer, I don’t know why I bother with hesitation. This book was deeply satisfying and so, so good.

I must admit that I was more interested in the plot and side characters than the main romance... Even though it was enemies to lovers, it just didn't really hit for me. I did end up liking Marduk though Solveig became more and more annoying with her obvious i-hate-you-and-i-will-kill-you thing... There were great moments between them, and definitelly burning sexual tension, but I didn't really feel the epic love of it all 🤷🏻‍♀️ (maybe sirius and malin just spoiled me for everyone else? lol)

I'm so glad we got to see the infamous Zilittu clan! I was crushing on Andromeda from the very first moment she showed up... And the whole arranged-marriage-while-slowly- falling-for-each-other-but-not-acknowledging-it she and Draco have going on demands its own book. There is also the obvious pining and yearning from the broody bodyguard/warmarshal who is very protective of princess Viveka love story going on... And the dead bit no so dead Draco's twin brother. Basically lots of family drama and potential love stories from the Zilittus 😬

Speaking of family, I loved seeing the Zini finally come together and kick some major ass! Omg that scene when Marduk and Solveig come to tell them about the elves and they are all sitting at the giant table and throwing insults back and forth? While Sirius is trying not to kill them all just to have some quiet because if he did that Malin would be sad? Priceless.

Oh the scene where Rurik, Draco and Sirius are all in one room and Solvieg thinks about how now she finally knows why everyone avoids having drekki kings in forced proximity to one another... Draco is mad and annoyed, Rurik is also mad and annoyed while Sirius is casually leaning back in his chair, his boots up on the table and smirking 🔥 Then there is the scene where they are all battling the elves and Haakon and Tor do the Gimli/Legolas contest thing while Bryn just rolls her eyes knowing she'll win in the end anyway.... The scene where Ishtar says goodbye to Marduk and just how they secretly reassure one another in general made me tear up a bit... Also the scene where Sirius says that Andri was everything he was not, how he was always his heart and consience, how without Andri je would be a monster. And Marduk tries to reassure him and Sirius is like I killed your father Marduk and I see his blood on my hands every night, and Marduk says "I see it too, I see his blood drenching the rug... but you never killed my father" And omg when the bond is broken and Rurik is half mad with grief and Sirius is there to ground him, to hold him!! And Rurik want to give up his throne and Sirius claps his hand over Rurik's mouth bc don't you fucking dare...
-》“You are not stepping down. You are not going to crawl off into some mountain somewhere and hibernate again. We need you.”
“I can’t—”
He had two fistfuls of Rurik’s shirt. “Yes. You. Can. You want to play these games? Fine. Then name me regent. You focus on getting your wife back while I hold your court together. But the second the queen is back, you are going to sit your ass on that cursed throne and you are going to stay there. And I will go back to glaring moodily at everyone who dares threaten you."
And THEN Rurik says "Promise me we will get her back" and Sirius says "If I need to break apart Álfheimr piece by piece, then I will do so" *sobs*

I loved this one. The prologue was a great intro of getting more in depth of why Solveig has such hate and vengeance for Marduk. I can feel her humiliation which goes even more in depth throughout the book. This story is a major turning event for the series. I just loved seeing Marduk and Solveig see their relationship blossom. By the end, Marduk sure had a great grand gesture that put a smile on my face. BUT I CAN'T FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAPPENED WITH OUR OTHER COUPLES!!!! I actually thought the scene with Tormund (w/his new axes), Bryn, and Haakon almost trying to best one another at the beginning of the fight was quite funny. Reminds me of Gimli and Legolas from LOTR when they were counting their kills. HILARIOUS!!! This story had ALL THE FEELS!

All of our main couples are still back and with a massive war brewing because we're not done with the series...Queen of Lightening with be next! I really need this next book soon! I highly recommend reading the series in order.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Another excellent addition to McMaster's fantasy romance series. While I loved the romance between Marduk and Solveig, I really like how the author has expanded the world in Master of Storms. So many more characters to explore! Can't wait to read the next one! Highly recommended, especially for Sarah J. Maas fans.

Wow. Just wow. This book was an awesome read. Solveig didn’t make much an impression in Sirius HEA so I didn’t think I’d care for her but she has such great chemistry with Marduk.

I will say that this novel was more. . . brutal than the others. It’s almost read like a finale if not for the cliff hanger ending. I can’t wait to find out the truth about Freyja.

I’d like to see a story about Draco/Andromeda, Viveka/Talon, Elin/Andri, and finally Ishtar/Caelum. I could see this series easily having 5 more books added to it. This maybe the 4th series I’ve read written by McMaster and I can’t get enough of her writing. Sacrifice does seem to play an important role in majority of her novels which brings an element of reality to these fantastical series.

I very much enjoyed this one! Solveig is so kickass, i loved her take-no-shit-i-will-defeat-my-enemies-look-at-me-again-and-i'll-beat-you-up attitude and how Marduk reacted. A proper enemies-to-lovers, push and pull storyline. Loved it. Writing this has made me want to reread it already.

Who doesn't love a good enemies-to-lovers story?

I had been eagerly waiting for Marduk and Solveig's story, especially after getting a taste of their interaction in Storm of Fury. And Master of Storms did not disappoint.
Their story unfolded in the best way! I usually don't appreciate when "Then" and "Now" chapters are alternated in books (I prefer that stories are told "chronologically"), but with this one, I didn't mind it (there were only a few during the first half). It's because I love how we get to revisit the start of their "relationship" and see both their side of things. I also enjoyed how Marduk eventually made up for past mistakes (swoon).

Can't wait for the next book! I still have questions especially with how Master of Storms ended for some of the characters

Been awhile since I last read this series and I skipped writing reviews for the last three book that I HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. I don't remember the characters and the time skip in this story just made me confused and mad. And while I do like the enemies to lovers troupe, this one screamed PREDICTABLE and it might as well be called THE PLAYER AND THE SHREW.

Might revisit this, or I might not. As much as I love dragons, I didn't think this series was McMaster's finest. From what I recall of this series, all the books gave a rather average vibe.

More like 3.5*, but I didn't realize there would be such a big cliff hanger. I would've waited to read this one until the next book was out. That said, it was a good story, but I just wasn't that interested in the main couple, and there were was not as much action or plot movement for much of the book. I skimmed the sex scenes after awhile, not because they were not well written but because I just wanted to get to what happened next. This felt like a filler book to me. I am really looking forward to the next book though I and highly recommend this series.

4.75 ⭐️ As soon as we witnessed the clash of hate/love between these two (and the undeniable chemistry) in the previous book, I couldn’t WAIT to read their story. And it was awesome!

Marduk, crown prince of the Zini clan and brother to Rurik, Ishtar, and Ardis has been number one enemy to Solvieg, princess and warlord of the Sadu clan for a decade. Ever since he refused to choose one of the three princess to wed in alliance and skipped town - but not before drunkenly making up a very unflattering song about Solvieg. Humiliated and heartbroken, the tough and scary Solvieg captures him 10 years later and he is dragged before her king and forced to choose a bride this time. To her horror, he chooses Solvieg, then has a moment of passion on their wedding night, before he abandons her when he is rescued by Tormund, Bryn, and Haakon. Humiliated a second time by his abandonment, a furious Solvieg makes a vow to bring his heart back in a box.

“Do you think I’m a fool? The second I untie you, you’ll put that knife through my throat.”
“If you think I’ll aim for anywhere as benign as your throat, then you should think again.”
He winced. “One day my balls are going to take exception to the way you’ve so poorly treated them.”

However, there are sinister forces rising against the clan and Marduk and Solvieg must work together if they have any hope of surviving them. I loved Marduk and Solvieg, both strong characters who don’t back down.

“Running his fingers along the rapier, he gave her another look. “Well?” he demanded with a wicked little smile. “Are we dueling?”
“Oh, we’re dueling.” Her entire body practically vibrated with tension. “No mercy, Marduk. I’m going to beat you so badly you go flying back to your mother with your tail tucked between your legs. I’m going to make you cry tears of pure fire.”
“So many dirty promises.”

Although he has done her wrong, first with the song (a moment of drunken idiocy for which he is eternally sorry) and second with his abandonment (and to be fair, he had to go and save the world), he truly wants to make up for it. When he realizes the extent of Solvieg’s need for control he surrenders it several times in the most delicious and sweet ways.

“What do you want of me? This?” Marduk gave her a slow, heated smile, one that melted her insides. And then he went to his knees in front of her, his eyes gleaming like newly minted gold coins. “Do you want my surrender, Solveig? Because if you want me on my knees, you have it. And if you want me to beg, then maybe I will.” His lips quirked. “Or maybe I won’t. I guess that is a question that needs answering.”

The scenes of them battling for control and each giving in are hot!
This book brings together the full cast from previous books - Rurik & Freya, Haakon & Ardis, Sirius & Malin, Bryn & Tormund, and even the side characters in a battle royale to save the world. It’s awesome!

Like the other books in the series, Master of Storms is hilarious, action packed, sweet, sexy, and engaging. Cant wait for the next. 4.75 awesome stars!

“Because you’re the adventure I’ve been looking for all my life.”

The next chapter in this epic saga of warring dragon clans does not disappoint.
Sloveig the fierce, daughter of a king, warrior princess, has no need of a handsome dreki prince to sweep her off his feet. She may have been horrified, when given a choice between her and her much more suitable sisters, the reckless Marduk chooses her as his mate, but she is outraged when he openly mocks her and then flees the court before the ceremony. She will kill him, and she will bring his heart back home in a box, she has promised the goddess so it can be no other way.
When she finally catches up with him he proves a tougher foe than she had every imagined. Nothing seems quite as clear cut as it did when she made that promise. There is an undeniable attraction between them, a spark that she feels for no other. Has it always been there? And is it enough to change her course?
Fate has a way of intervening and Solveig and Marduk must work together as a band of war-mongering elves are intent on capturing Marduk's sister, Ishtar, to help them open a portal to another dimension.
It all gets very magicy and complex and the Dreki put aside there differences to fight a common foe.
I liked feisty Solveig and the immediate heady tension between her and her nemesis Marduk. She is tough and fierce and brittle. She solves her problems with her sword and has no use for soft words, and yet it is her heart that leads where Marduk is concerned. Their story smoulders off the page.
There is a lot of new magic thing in this story and that was probably my least favourite part, it seemed every problem was solved by a new type of magic or artefact. I have lost count of the number of heroes and villains saved from the brink of death by magic.
I did enjoy this book, especially the ending, which sets up nicely for the next in the series, it sounds pretty exciting.
I recived a free e-copy of this book to review.

This is the book that many of us have been waiting for!

This book continues the overall story arc of the series. (Yes, you really should read from book #1!) This book also gives us Marduk and Solveig's story which has been 10 years in the making. She has sworn a vow before her father's court to bring back Marduk's heart or never return. Marduk is at his brother's court but all is not well. He has been helping his brother Rurik to establish his rule after the death of their murderous mother. He has found his lost twin Ishtar and he should be feeling happy, satisfied and safe but he isn't any of those things. When they have to join forces to visit another dangerous clan the sparks really start to fly!

I enjoyed the continuation of the overall story arc and the resolution with Queen Amadea and the introduction of old enemies of the dreki who may have answers Freyja has been seeking her whole life. I also very much enjoyed seeing another clan and the new characters that I very much hope we will be seeing more of!

The romance.....the smexy bits.....are so juicy! The fact that Solveig and Marduk know each other after so much time with their lives entwined and have so much they don't know at the same time is perfect. The struggle of a strong and dominate female who is able to take care of herself, has ambitions and a driving urge to protect her loved ones figuring out how to be in a relationship with a strong male is what makes this book so special. In many ways this is a very modern partnership with two people who long for someone who really understands them. A wonderful entry in the series and the ending only leaves me wanting the next book as soon as possible!

"Dreki were mythical creatures born of Fire and Air. They were smaller than the larger, lumbering cousins they shared shape with-dragons-and far more powerful, with the ability to shift into mortal form and walk among humans."

To form an alliance between two clans, Solveig's father promised Prince Marduk the hand of one of his three daughters. Marduk have the choice of which one, but a marriage of convenience wasn't his idea. When he choose her then fled the night of their mating, he became her nemesis and Solveig vowed to find him and end their connection, no matter what she'll have to do to succeed and how many time it'll take. Strong-willed with a savage temper, men usually fear the ice princess. But Marduk welcome her intensity and is not intimidated by the strong animosity between them. With flashbacks from their first meeting and the beginning of their unsual courtship, we witness how the estranged mates passed from enemies to lovers.

"There's a storm inside you."

Even if it took me a little time before being totally invested in the book, and with MC that were cool and special but not my favorites of the series (could be their "homicidal" foreplays), the author still gave us a great entertainment and she play with the characters' emotions like a maestro who knows exactly how to highlight the power and intricacies of those feelings. She made me curious and excited for the next adventure.
And I can't deny that each and every times, Bec McMaster makes danger looks sexy.

This one took a long time for me to get through. It was slow and for some reason I couldn’t connect with the characters and their adventure. I did like it once I got about 70% through it, but it definitely was not my favorite in the series and it took me months to read. Kept putting it down and going to other books then returning to it to read some more, which is a shame. I love Bec McMaster and her storytelling, usually, but this one just didn’t keep me interested. Solveig is a strong female lead who doesn't trust men, especially Marduk after his humiliating her 10 years ago. He definitely had his work cut out for him in winning over his very reluctant mate. A new bad guy, and an old one we all thought was dead, is wrecking havoc and wanting to start a war with the Dreki. They definitely seem formidable and it will be interesting to see what happens with Marduk's twin sister. I have my suspicions who she will be matched up with, but will have to wait and see. I will definitely read the next one, I just for some reason really did not connect with this story and its two main characters.

Honestly I'd give it more of a 3.5, but ultimately rounding down because I was getting kind of sick of it by the end.

I love Solveig. Marduk is fine. I think their romance is fascinating and really engaging. The overarching plot of chaos magic and elf dimensions and Amadea and everything is also epic.

Buuuuut it just started to get really really repetitive. Sentences and lines were used multiple times. Solveig and Marduk would have epiphanies about their feelings every few chapters. Solveig's whole promise to the goddess thing was predictable and took way too long to play out.

This might be a personal preference, but this book also suffers the common fate of a late book in a series where there ends up being way too many characters in every scene. They did not all need to be there, I'm sorry. There were even multiple times where certain characters were casually mentioned to have been around for AGES, but they certainly didn't START there.

Solveig being an angry badass makes up for most of it though.
