This is book 2 in Bradley’s newest series. I would say you can read this as a stand alone quite nicely. I did enjoy the first book, but not as much as this one. The character overlap isn’t much. (Cecilia has a small amount of page time in book 1, but nothing extensive). You might be left wondering a bit about Lady Clifford’s school, but honestly there isn’t that much information given about it in the first book either. Definitely more so than this book though, so
Cecilia became an orphan extremely young and was rescued by Lady Amanda Clifford and brought to her school. There she learned a variety of skills and works undercover to help solve crimes. She is sent to Darlington Castle to discover if he really did murder his previous wife. When she arrives at the castle, she finds plenty of mystery and secrets to keep her busy.
Give this a try if you want: - The ultimate gothic feel romance – haunted castle? Check. Lights seen in forests with white, ghostly dresses glimpsed by many? Check. Huge, handsome, mysterious lord that chases you down hallways to ravish you, and you let him even though you don’t know he’s a murderer? Check. - Late 18th century romance – This book takes place in 1795 - A mystery mixed with romance - Class differences – heroine is an orphan, hero is a marquess. Heroine goes to work at hero’s house as a maid/nursemaid - A hero that is a touch jealous, but protective too (and it doesn’t cross the line into jerk territory, he’s quite wonderful) - Lower steam – a few kisses and a few full scenes at the end of the book
I love Anna Bradley’s writing. She always just pulls me right in and I am lost. Lost to her characters, the story, the emotional pull. I will always read a new Anna Bradley!!!
This series is not my favorite by her. It has a higher focus on crime solving and mystery aspects and I miss the all consuming ROMANCE of her previous series. But, if I’m reading a book with some type of mystery I want it like this. I find Bradley to be a master tension builder. Layer after layer, the wanting slowly growing until your heart is clenched, your breath is hitched, you cannot wait for these characters to touch. It’s the best.
I adore her heroines and Cecilia is no exception. She’s a bit shy, tiny, not super feisty but stands her ground when needed. I found her really enjoyable. Gideon is a good match for her and I loved him too. He is a widower and Cecilia fills a place in his life and heart so perfectly.
Gideon has a 4 year old niece, Isabella, who is just adorable. I actually tend to shy away from stories where I know there are children (I spend my days getting mauled by small children for 14 hours straight which is probably why lol), but Bella was a lovely addition to the story and she really brought out how wonderful Gideon was too.
I started this late last night and just couldn’t stop reading. This is a common theme with Anna Bradley and myself. And I have to rate higher just for that too because I haven’t want to read anything. Nothing has held my attention. So, kudos, to you, Miss Bradley for making me care. A tough job, indeed, as I have been hopeless lately.
I’ll leave you with a small passage where my heart began to pitter patter.
He pressed his fingertips more firmly into her chin, tilting her head back. “You say so, but I don’t know if I believe you, Cecilia. I don’t know if I’ve ever believed you. What will I do with you if I find out you’ve lied to me?” It might have been an innocent question, but the wicked edge to his voice turned it dark and sultry, as if he’d already made up his mind what he’d do to her, and was very much looking forward to doing it...
✨ If being chased down a damp cobbled road surrounded by barren trees, while wearing a long flowing dress was a book, it would be this book.✨
Distinctly gothic and Jane Eyre vibes and, again, great for fall! Not quite as engaging as book one for me, but still worth a read. He was engaged for around half of the book, but just as soon as I was getting annoyed, it was all resolved so thank god for little mercies. It had a little creepiness and a spooky castle. It kinda reminded me of Too Wicked to Kiss by Erica Ridley!
Series: The Swooning Virgins Society #2 Publication Date: 2/2/21 Number of Pages: 265 ****4.5 Stars Rounded Up ****
This is a wonderful addition to the series featuring the ladies from the Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls. This book isn’t quite as on-the-edge-of-your-seat exciting as the first book in the series, The Virgin Who Ruined Lord Gray, but it doesn’t need to be because the character’s makeup and backgrounds are different. The story is well-written, well-plotted, and populated with characters you will love – all of them. Just so you know – not that it makes any difference to the story – the Book Blurb says Cecilia goes undercover as a governess. She does not – she goes first as a housemaid and then moves into the nursery as a nursemaid.
Gideon Rhys, Marquess of Darlington, is known as the Murderous Marquess because everyone believes he murdered his wife. That rumor didn’t start for a while after his wife died, but when it did start, it spread with a vengeance. Gideon has spent the last year inside Darlington Castle, mourning his wife and trying to come to grips with the multiple tragedies in his life. Now, he owes it to his title and to his niece Isabelle to marry again and have children. He’s certainly not looking for love a second time, he’s had that and the loss of it has broken him. When he meets Miss Fanny Honeywell, he decides to offer for her – not because he loves her, but because she is graceful, lovely, biddable, and would probably make a good mother for Isabella. After the betrothal, he heads back to Darlington Castle because he’s heard the rumors of the White Ghost who is making appearances around Darlington Castle. He believes it is just a rumor, but, if it isn’t, he has to find out what is going on. Shortly after his arrival, he finds a woman by his lake – throwing stones into it. After he confronts her, she identifies herself as a new housemaid. He knows she is lying to him – he just doesn’t believe her – and so he dismisses her. You’ll find he dismisses her several times – none of them stick.
Cecilia Gilchrist doesn’t understand why Lady Amanda Clifford chose her to go undercover at Darlington Castle. She’s not as skilled as the other ladies at the school mostly because she is too soft-hearted and always believes the best of everyone. She just doesn’t feel she has the skills she needs to deceive the Darlington household and uncover the real facts behind the death of the last Lady Darlington. As her investigation continues – and she manages to keep herself employed there – she finds herself more and more attracted to the Marquess. One moment she believes he must be guilty because all of the facts say so – and the next moment her heart tells her it just can’t be true.
I love the slight gothic feel to the story. As you read, you come to feel as if you know what happened, but there are no facts to say so – and then there is the big reveal and you know all. The revelation might surprise – and it might not – but it is exciting to read. While it took Gideon a bit to come to his senses, we finally get our HEA – and the epilogue is sweet and romantic.
I definitely recommend this book. You’ll love Isabella who is Gideon’s four-year-old niece. I also enjoyed the staff, Mrs. Briggs, Amy, and Duncan, but my favorite was Gideon’s friend, Lord Haslemere, who I believe will be featured in the next book of the series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cecilia Gilchrist, young denizen of the Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls is installed as a housemaid for Gideon Rhys, Marquess of Darlington, at his castle. He's said to have murdered his wife. Cecilia's task is to uncover the truth of the matter. Promotion to role of governess to his niece, four year old Arabella, brings Cecilia closer to her goal. Cecilia finds a whole lot more than she expected, and in doing so faces danger and comes into her own. Another super read from Bradley.
The Virgin Who Vindicated Lord Darlington was a fantastic read featuring a romance between a marquess accused of murder and the woman trying to prove whether or not he did it.
The Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls brings aristocrats to justice for crimes they think they've gotten away with. After rumors of the Murdering Marquess grow stronger, Cecilia Gilchrist is sent to pose as a housemaid in the man's country estate to uncover whether or not he killed his wife. Unfortunately for Cecilia the marquess ends up being in residence making her job that much harder. Gideon Rhys, Marquess of Darlington, clearly has secrets but is killing his wife one of them?
Cecilia grew up on the streets of London before she was taken in by Lady Clifford and brought to the school. One of Cecilia's greatest strengths is her ability to empathize with people allowing her to put herself in their shoes to uncover the truth. Cecilia does have a lot of doubts about how well she can do her job because she doesn't have the same type of skills as the other ladies at the school. It was nice watching her come to realize she can help in her own way. After the death of Gideon's wife, he has been plagued by rumors that he killed her and hid her body somewhere on the Darlington estate. As a result of the rumors, Gideon has a hard time trusting people and usually assumes the worse. His skepticism isn't without merit though, so I did understand why he acted that way.
Cecilia and Gideon's romance does follow the employer/employee trope but it was thankfully missing a lot of the elements that I usually dislike about the trope. Gideon never really asserts power over Cecilia and in fact when he tries to dismiss her several times, in large part due to his growing attraction to her, she ignores the dismissal and talks her way out of it. Over the course of Cecilia's stay at the estate, the pair strike up a nice friendship which helped provide a good foundation for their relationship. Their chemistry is excellent and I thought the steamy scenes were very well done. One thing I really liked about their romance was that Gideon goes all in before Cecilia does and isn't afraid to admit his feelings for her. Obviously some issues come up near the end after the reason for Cecilia coming the estate is revealed, but they were dealt with in a mature fashion. Ultimately I was very happy with the pair's romance.
Overall The Virgin Who Vindicated Lord Darlington was a very enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to reading the third book in the series, The Virgin Who Humbled Lord Haslemere, when it releases later this year.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Posing as a servant puts Cecilia Gilchrist rather out of her comfort zone, but she can’t refuse a request from the mentor who raised her. She must uncover the secrets of Darlington Castle and determine if the marquess is guilty of murdering his late wife. Gideon Rhys, the Marquess of Darlington, clearly has a few secrets, but Cecilia isn’t convinced he’s a true killer beneath his surly façade. She tries to remain objective as evidence seems to point to him, but she finds herself drawn ever closer to him, nevertheless.
Gideon knows he should’ve dismissed Cecilia on her first day. She’s clearly not a proper servant and yet he finds he cannot let her go. In fact, he grows increasingly protective of her, determined to shield her from the darkness that continues to hound him. Little does he know, the closer he becomes to Cecilia, the more danger she is in.
I really enjoyed this gothic-tinged romance. The setting was excellent, and the mystery well done, keeping me turning pages when I should’ve been sleeping, and a few of the scenes had my nape prickling with the tension. The ultimate villain was predictable enough, but not the how of the actions, and I liked the story well enough that I didn’t mind one bit. Gideon was a bit haughty at first but extremely loveable once his character was fleshed out more. He turned out to be incredibly sweet and swoon-worthy, not to mention rather pitiful given how much he’d suffered. I enjoyed Cecilia as a heroine and loved how this sad situation led her to trust in her own instincts and abilities. The development of her relationship with Gideon was believable and I also quite enjoyed the supporting characters. This book kept me engrossed and I didn’t want to put it down. I look forward to the next installment in the series and recommend this book for anyone who likes some mystery and a gothic setting in their romance.
For those of you looking for a series to binge read until the next Elisa Braden comes out later this month, this series may be the ticket. Don't let the titles turn you off as to the writing quality within and so far these have been fun. The titles in the series tips a hat to a series of books that the ladies would get together and group read. Next up, we have two that love to hate and snark on one another, my CATNIP!! :-)
I really enjoyed reading The Virgin Who Vindicated Lord Darling. It felt like a Gothic Romance Novel with a hint of Jane Eyre type style of storyline!
Lord Darlington is believed to have murdered his deceased wife Cassandra. She is suppose to be haunting the Darlington Castle. Cecilia is sent to investigate. But finds herself falling in love with 4 year old Isabelle, Gideon's niece and she falls in love with Gideon too.
The characters are fully developed in this story with intelligent believable banter between them.
The Audible Narrator was very good!! I recommend listening to it on Audible.
This was soooo much more entertaining than book 1 (just my opinion). A ghost that wasn't a ghost. Loved the characters and plot. A very nicely constructed story. 4☆

Will the past come haunting them ...
I loved this gothic tale with its heavy atmosphere and the scraping/creaking/squeaking noises. Plus the black cat intruding at the most obvious moments just to disappear instantly. Brrrr, perfect for a rainy afternoon. From the very beginning, I was sucked in the pages, shivering and fighting goosebumps while the vibe around the heroes was closing around them. While the villain of this story was easily identified, the many clues and heroine’s missteps were what made it intriguing and captivating.
Cecilia is the most tenderhearted of the group of Lady Clifford’s pupils. Her empathy pushes her to find the best in the others before thinking of the worst. Expect when her affection is engaged, from there she might lack of rationality and jump straight on wrong conclusions. Yet, she can’t shake out her need for the truth, why she follows the clues she slowly has gathered and by put two and two ascertain what was right in front of her. But she is no professional sleuth and by engaging her heart, she sometime lets her heart lead the road when she should be more sensible.
Gideon lost everything not so long ago, so what are his reputation and name when he has no one to share it with. Yet he still has a reason to try to protect it why he is back to catch the person playing trick with other people’s reason. Which explains how he appears so cold and haughty when he first meets Cecilia. His trust had already been tested and he struggles to give it back now. Plus she challenges him at every turn, never listening nor obeying. She goes her own way, with her own secrets. Yet when he is all shadows, she is all light. She is so easy to like even when she defies him. Why he fights his attraction, she is everything he longs for and at the same time, all he should despise. And while the sparks fly, the circumstances around them make them wary of one another. It will be small gestures and kind deeds that will only be able to break the walls between them. But is there anything in common between a Marquess and a mudlarking orphan. 5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher Kensington Books. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
the virgin who vindicated lord darlington starred cecilia who was sent to the castle to ascertain if gideon actually killed his wife. once at the darlington castle, cecilia’s curiosity landed her in some dangerous situations. cecilia often compared herself to the other girls in the clifford charity school for wayward girls, thinking that she’s not suitable for the job. however, it’s precisely her empathy and relentless attitude that drew gideon towards her.
assumed to be a murderer, gideon lived a tough life after his wife died. the rumours surrounding her death plagued gideon no matter where he went. skeptical of everything and everyone who crosses his path, gideon took a while to get used to cecilia’s presence. at the same time, he couldn’t help but always seek her out.
overall, i enjoyed cecilia unraveling the mystery behind the death of gideon’s wife and finding out who has been the one haunting the castle. her being the only one who could coax isabella, gideon’s niece, just makes things 100% sweeter. gideon’s protectiveness and love towards isabella shines through each interaction as well. i can’t wait for more in the series!
This was better than the first book in this series in terms of this book focusing less on the mystery and more on the romance. The chemistry between Gideon and Cecilia was not the best, but at least it was present. I loved how Cecilia managed to set Gideon down by her scoldings. Imagine a servant scolding the master. It’s not something we see everyday and it amused me.
However, despite the larger focus on the romance, I still felt the bonding and the time Cecilia and Gideon spent together was not sufficient. Then suddenly they were in love. It puzzled me.
I disliked how Cecilia lied to Gideon so many times and waiting till the end of the book before confessing to him what she actually was doing and at his house for.
The book was also slow moving and I was a little frustrated by how slow it went between Gideon and Cecilia.
The mystery was not surprising, i kinda knew who it was, towards the end of the book.
I hope the next book is better, because I liked gideon’s friend, lord hastlemere.
This is the second book in this series of HR mixed with Mystery. The h is Cecilia Gilchrist sent to discover if the Murdering Marquess is true or not by Lady Clifford. The H is Gideon Theo Rhys Marquess of Darlington who is rumoured to have killed his wife and her ghost is haunting the Castle.
Mystery Solved Real Murderer Leonora Rhys widow of the first Marquess of Darlington. Her goal was to marry her brother in law Gideon and have a son to inherit the title. She killed Gideon’s first wife Cassandra along with their un born son by giving her pennyroyal which tastes like spearment tea. She tried to kill Cecilia and burn down the Castle. Leanora died from smoke inhalation as the passage she tried to escape from was blocked.
ROMANCE QUOTES: They didn't speak. His eyes full of secrets and shadows, held her trapped. Still their gazes held. Her lips parted. For an instant his eyes dropped to her mouth and Cecilia felt her tongue creep out to touch her bottom lip.He followed her movement and a sound tore from his throat, a growl or a gasp Don't look at me like that. How I am I looking at you? As if you want... Quote:Every night for the past four days, he'd dreamt of Cecilia. If it wasn't her voice it was her wide dark eyes. If not that it was her affection for Isabella or her endless supply of inappropriate ballads. Quote:Dear God how could one scrap of linen smell so intoxicating? She'd never smelled anything more mouthwatering in her life. His handkerchief. Quote:He awoke to Cecilia crooning to Isabella her husky voice weaving a spell around him until drifted back to sleep. and dreamt of wide velvety brown eyes plump pink lips and a stubborn pointed chin. He'd been hard when he woke his cock twitching insistently against his stomach his entire body flushed with arousal. Quote: Cecilia was challenged to sing a song by Mrs. HONEYWELL and she rose to the challenge. She sang a bawdy song about copulation. Afterwards Gideon’s reaction in private: Would you call it good Cecilia? It is something certainly but I wouldn't call it good. He grasped her chin then asked Have you been crying? I won't say I approve you musical choice but I don't condone Mrs. HONEYWELL s behavior. You were unbearably provoked. Quote: First Kiss 💋 He caught his breath on a moan when his lips found hers . Her kiss was hesitant shy as if she never kissed a man before and wasn't quite sure how to do it but the soft damo drah of her full mouth again his made his lower belly clench with wanting nothing mattered then but getting closer to her. His hot panting breathshis tongue and lips 💋 kissing and nibbling and sucking at her his low crooning voice telling her how beautiful and perfect she was and urging her to take what she needed take her pleasure... Quote: Consumation His heated length seemed to swell inside her then pushing her closer toward the mindless pleasure with each thrust. Oh oh please she clung to him that delicious heat pulling tighter until with a fierce thrust of Gideon’s hips it explodes inside of her. That's it Cecilia come for me sweetheart Gideon broke off in a gasp and buried his face in her neck as the tight hot grip of her body hurled him into his own release. Quote: Confession of Love ❤ 😍 I've loved you since the first day I met you when you scolded me for being ungentlemanly and told me I didn't look fashionable enough to be Marquess. I fell in love with you because you told the truth and reminded I'd once been a better man than the one I'd become. Quote:Proposal Marry me Cecilia. Become my Marchioness. Come back to Darlington Castle with me and help Isabella and me make a home again. Yes. She she caressed him stroking the skin at the back of his neck.
I knew this would be amazing by the title alone! Plus the author is one of my favorites and I love the entire premise of this series! Suspense, murder (maybe, maybe not!), ghostly sightings, humor, a gothic castle, delightful characters and a widower who will still your heart in the end. Alright, the beginning, middle and end...
Cecilia is going undercover to try to determine if Gideon, Marquess of Darlington, actually murdered his wife. The rumors are rampant and by working in his household, she hopes to ferret out the truth.
Gideon knows Cecilia is no more a housemaid than he is but as he tries to dismiss her, it doesn't stick or seem to phase her. The problem is Cecilia is really not cut out to be a sleuth be she is determined to find out what is going on. Especially when there is a "white ghost" that appear and other happenings.
I loved these two, plus Isabella, Gideon's young niece and the staff. As Cecilia tries to find the truth and she and Gideon grow close, a villain is lurking that could change everything! Loved, loved this story!
[…] «So perché siete qui, Lord Darlington.»
Credi ancora in me?»
In this gothic romance, Cecilia Gilchrist is sent by her mentor to look into the guilt (or innocence) of Lord Darlington, or as he’s known in Society, The Murderous Marquess. Shocking rumours are flying about what happened to his wife, and since the marquess has proposed to another innocent young lady, it’s Cecilia’s job to determine whether his prospective bride is in danger.
The locals are in absolute terror of Darlington Castle, with an apparition they call the White Lady being seen on multiple occasions. The marquess, however, isn’t what Cecilia expects. He’s a man in obvious grief, and one devoted to his little niece Isabella - who nobody mentioned before either.
Cecilia is posing as a housemaid, and Gideon sees through her pretence right from the beginning. He is, however, somewhat desperate for staff, so allows his housekeeper to keep her on. Soon enough Isabella has attached herself to Cecilia and the deal is sealed.
There’s a curious little subplot with a cat who apparently only Cecilia ever sees (and I’m not sure what actually happened to the cat at the end of the story, either) and secret passageways in the walls of the castle - well, it is a gothic romance! The truth, when Cecilia uncovers it, is actually genuinely heartbreaking; I truly felt for Gideon who has lost far too much at the hands of someone clearly deranged. Cecilia’s kind nature made her a perfect match for him and I was quite invested in their happy ending.
I do like a good gothic romance: it combines two of my favourite genres, historical romance and romantic suspense, and this is a fine example. This is the first book I’ve read from this series but I’ll definitely be looking for more of them. Five stars for an engaging, enthralling read.
Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this title via NetGalley.
I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. The Virgin Who Vindicated Lord Darlington is the second book in Anna Bradley’s intriguing The Swooning Virgins Society. I think you will enjoy this book more if you have read the first book. Cecilia Gilchrist is pretending to be a servant in the home of Gideon Rhys, the Marquess of Darlington, to discover if he is truly the Murdering Marquess. Unfortunately, she’s not very good at being a servant, she’s too small to do much of the heavy work required, and as a nursemaid, she knows more bawdy tavern songs than lullabies. Gideon is engaged to the perfect debutante, and he’s certainly not the type to lust after servants, but Cecilia is working her way under his skin and into his heart, if only he could be sure she’s not lying to him. A ghost, a nasty villainess, and a mysterious death make for an engaging story, and I enjoyed reading it very much. Medium Steam. CW: death in the past of a mother and infant in childbirth. I love the first book in the series and I enjoyed this one too. It was nice to revisit this world again. You don't have to read the first book to understand this one but it would be more enjoyable. I like the heroine and hero. They are both great on their own. They are even better together because they balance each other. Anna Bradley is a terrific and I have enjoyed all her books so far. Looking forward to the next one this series.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Cecelia Gilchrist doesn't really understand why she's been chosen to go undercover as a housemaid in Darlington Castle, the home of the Marquess of Darlington, who is presumed to have murdered his late wife. Though she's an ex-student of the Clifford School, she thinks her friends may have better chance of discovering the truth, but she puts her faith in Lady Clifford's hands, and makes a go of it. As soon as she arrives, she locks heads with Gideon Rhys, the Marquess himself, and is dismissed no less than three times - but she refuses to leave. Because of Gideon's upcoming wedding, she needs to find out the truth quickly, and when she becomes nursemaid to Gideon's adorable four year old niece, Isabella, she's even less inclined to leave. But, the longer she spends at Darlington Castle, with Gideon, she realises he could never have killed his wife, and, even more worryingly, she's falling for him. Can they work out the truth behind the ghost who 'haunts' the castle, and be able to clear Gideon's name, once and for all?
I started this book straight after I finished the first in the series, and though I loved it, I was a little gutted with how little we saw of the others in the series - especially Sophia and Tristan. However, this one has definitely set the scene for book 3, which I can't wait to get into. In this book, anyway, we see Cecelia, who is slightly more soft-hearted, but just as feisty as Sophia, as she works to discover the truth about the late Marchioness of Darlington's death, and put an end to the murder rumours floating around - if possible. She doesn't get off to an auspicious start, but soon ingratiates herself in the household, and becomes indispensable to Lord Darlington. Little Lady Isabella just loves Cecelia, and Cecelia loves her back, and even if Gideon could force himself to send Cecelia away, he wouldn't do it to Isabella. Though Gideon is marrying in a few short weeks, to a young lady who seems to be able to face the idea of marrying a perceived murderer, he doesn't care for her at all, and can't keep his mind off Cecelia. And then there's also the issue of a 'ghost' haunting the town and his estate, forcing servants away, and keeping up the murder claims even after time has passed. Like in book 1, the mystery kept me gripped, and though this time around I worked out who the culprit was, it didn't lessen the enjoyment at all. Rather, I think I preferred this book to the previous one, somewhat, perhaps because of the way Gideon and Cecelia interacted with each other, and the love and affection they had for the other, and for Isabella. They quickly formed a little family within the household, even when it seemed like all was against them and they wouldn't be able to be together. Luckily, I've got a copy of book 3 already to read, as the little mentions of Lord Haslemere and Georgiana make me think it may be even better than the previous books! Another fantastic story from an author I'm so glad I've discovered!
Cecilia Gilchrist started out life living on the streets trying to find ways to care for herself. She was rescued by Lady Amanda of the Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls. There she was housed and educated. One thing these young ladies do is take jobs in homes where an aristocrat may be accused of something. There, they try to learn what really happened.
Kent - 1795
Cecilia has been sent to the home of Gideon Rhys, the Marquess of Darlington who is suspected of having murdered his wife. Darlington Castle is quite large and Cecilia is to work as a house maid. Right away, Cecilia gets on the man’s bad side so she has to work hard to keep her job.
Gideon’s wife died along with her stillborn baby. She had been ill for some time and people think that Gideon may have poisoned her. The townspeople say that the lady's ghost wanders around the woods of the castle.
But now, Gideon realizes that he needs to marry again and has selected the lovely Miss Fanny Honeywell. When she and her obnoxious mother arrive at the castle to prepare for the wedding, Fanny sees the ghost and leaves in terror.
By now, Cecilia has become the nursemaid to 4-year-old Isabelle, Gideon’s niece whose mother left. A lovely child, Gideon adores her and Cecelia is quite good with her. As Cecelia turns to investigating on her own to find out about the ghost, she gets to know Gideon better and an attraction sparks. Now, Gideon is worried that something bad may happen to Cecilia.
Will they find out why a ghost is appearing because they don’t believe in ghosts. Who is trying to scare them all?
This was a nice gothic story with lots of chills and spooky scenes. I was confused at the first part of the story because I had not read the first book. I feel that a better introduction and more information on the Clifford School would have reduced my confusion. I liked Gideon and Isabelle, but Seraphina was my favorite “character.” Clever romance.

Trope: mystery romance, opposites attract, with some whimsical and gothic vibes.
Cecelia a resident at The Clifford School for wayward girls. These ladies are given missions that help bring justice to aristocrats who think they're gotten away with their crimes.
Cecelia is sent out to the investigate the truth of Lord Darlington who is also a Marquess. She's to find out what really happened to his late wife to prove if he is a murderer or not. With luck not being on her side, he is in residence, which will only make her job only more difficult. She is disguised as a maid then later on climbs the latter and becomes the Governess to his neice Bella.
During her employment she gets to know him very well, and on several occasions he tries to dismiss her because of his growing affections and attraction towards her. When that happens, she simply ignores it and talks her way out of it. As the pair spend more time together they form a strong bond and become good friends. Their friendship helps and creates the foundation of their relationship which ultimately leads them romance and lastly to love one another. Cecelia works her way and breaks the wall to his heart but can he trust her? But she is also falling hard for him. The truth finally comes out and why she is there. Acourse he is very upset but they handle it like mature individuals and stay together.
The Romance in this book is set at a slower pace but the tension is definitely there gnawing at you (in a good way). Kisses and intimate scenes does not happen til later in the book but well worth the wait. This is book #2 to her newest series, but can be read as a standalone. I recommend this book if you enjoy romance with a twist of mystery.
A modern historical gothic story, yay! You might think with a title like this the story might be cheesy but you would be thinking wrong. Anna weaves a story of a ghost, a brooding lord, a widow and a “servant” that will keep you enthralled. I love the Swooning Virgin Society. These women are not super spies but ordinary women who try to find out the truth. I appreciate how Anna wrote the relationship of Gideon and Cecilia. These two needed the time to find their love and when it does culminate it is just beautiful. I loved watching how they solved this mystery. Just a great story. Can’t wait for Haslemere’s story (explosive).

Cecilia is sent to Darlington Castle, a gothic setting with a dark castle and a ghost, to see if Gideon really did murder his wife. Gideon is haunted by a ghost and his past. Cecilia helps him solve the mystery of who the woman in white is and what she wants. I can’t wait for the next in this series. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kensington Books for my honest review.
This series is so great. I love Cecilia and the swoony gothic romance she tumbled into. I'm so sad that the next book is the last one (because I was very special and read book 4 first).
