The book is written in association with Dr David Miller, who has worked in the addiction field for 25 years and is an expert in relapse prevention. It looks at each of the most common substances that people become addicted to and offers specific advice on how to tackle that particular substance safely and effectively yourself. I wanted to give up smoking (as I had few times before but it didn't quite stick) so I thought more info on how I should do that would be a plus. I can say that not only does this book contain info on smoking and its deep effects, but also on other types of addiction, the most common. And then comes the fun part: after you get a more deeper understanding on what goes on inside that your body, you get also what you need to solve your biggest problem regarding addiction - withdrawal. I can safely say that for me at least, it worked. I quit smoking without feeling as bad as I knew I would on other attempts. But beyond that, I still try to keep the healthy habits I developed trying to quit, habits that basically help people like Nelson Dellis (4 Time US Memory Champion) to do things with their memory that most of us wouldn't think possible.
This book not only help me quit tobacco but also opened my eyes to how other toxins I've been putting in my body for years affect brain chemistry. I've been casually trying to quit smoking for years--often going weeks before giving into cravings--but this book gave me the understanding of how addiction works as well as the vitamin regimen needed to quit overnight.
If you are thinking of quitting or have quit an addictive substance, and are now suffering post acute withdrawal (PAW) you will want to read this book. Focuses on re-balancing your brain chemistry that has usually been severely unbalanced by using various amino acid supplements, other types of supplements, diet, ect. First book I have read that talks about abstinence symptoms and what can be done about them.
I'm a convert! I've been feeling tired, sleepy and without energy for a while and after reading this book I have a plan and a clear understanding to nutrition, supplements and what I need to get my body and brain back in order. I don't know if it's all those diets on and off that messed with my body but I feel much better now that I started taking a few choice supplements a food. The author gives a clear outline of what supplements the brain and body needs with some science behind it. If you've been looking for a clear list of what you need to help your brain and body heal and repair then this is it. The book is not only about addiction, it's about healing my body and brain. Highly recommended if you feel out of energy and cannot concentrate. I'm sure it's also helpful for people with addictions including sugar addiction.

This book has put me onto some new things. First, in getting it, I unknowingly violated my own prohibition on abridged versions of things, which has caused me to drop the prohibition altogether. Second, that I was on the right path with supplementation.
This is the kind of book that is so packed of back-to-back, direct, high quality information that it makes no sense for me to attempt to encapsulate takeaways. However, because of the type of information that's in this book (procedural, recipes, etc), it would also be exceedingly difficult to annotate using my normal methods. So, I'm just going to give a brief overview and express my appraisal of the information's quality.
The short version is this. The brain works on neurotransmitters and receptors. When there's an issue with our receptors, it impacts our emotions and cognitive performance. These issues can come about as a result of genetics or stimulus like trauma. When that happens, it makes us susceptible to addiction to chemicals and activities, including legal and illegal drugs. When we can no longer normally function without the drugs, we can be considered to be addicted. Ceasing and recovering from addiction is typically a difficult and painful process because we treat the symptom, the addiction, rather than the root problem, the brain's relationship with neurotransmitters. There is a way to make transition out of substance dependence easier, less painful and dramatically successful. Through the methods and information laid out, I also see a way for someone not addicted to anything (unlikely, I know) to lead a better life through giving their brain, gut and the rest of their body optimal nutrition at a granular level.
This book is so good I'm buying it to keep on my shelf as a reference text and may even gift it to some people. I don't buy books, y'all. I'm a pirate through and through. If I'm buying a book, it's because I need to have hands-on access to that information. I think this will become a staple of my library.
New age bullcrap, however the science is quite compelling - find out what neurotransmitter is out of kilter in your brain then consume the amino acid that manufactures it to bring your brain back to chemical balance. I just wish the author had used more science and given better solutions rather than recommend you take a fist full of homeopathic tablets each day to cure what ails you.
