The Man I Hate

Rate this book
I gazed through my living room window, toward his front door. In a wine-induced stupor, I stumbled along the razor’s edge that separated love from hate. Soon, I was bound to fall.

It was anyone’s guess on which side I’d land.

Braxton Rourke’s cell phone number was included in the contacts of Hollywood’s A-List actors and actresses, successful musicians, and professional athletes. When a problem arose, Braxton fixed it. Receiving an “I need help with—” text from Selena Gomez, Ryan Gosling—or the police—was a common occurrence.

A well-dressed protector who appeared like an actor himself, he was sickeningly handsome, confident, and spoke with an educated authority.

I met him while settling the estate of my deceased parents. Enamored by his tailored Italian suit, bravado gait, and undeniable charisma, I suggested the unthinkable.

A one-night stand.

He agreed, but only because I was leaving in three days. His life, he explained, couldn’t include a woman.

For the three days that followed, I watched him come and go, knowing we’d never be anything other than two people who shared a magical moment in the front seat of his Range Rover while parked outside a trendy Hollywood diner.

Then, the unthinkable happened. A bizarre of series circumstances forced us to be neighbors.

RELEASE DATE: Monday, May 11th, 2020

NAME: "The Man I Hate"

MALE LEAD: 50, sexy, gray-haired, and divorced. Former Marine. Dresses like successful businessman, always. Works as a "Hollywood Fixer", resolving issues that arise with the area's rich and famous, not always abiding by the law. Resides in LA, California area next door to 2 native Oklahoma retirees.

WOMAN LEAD: 40, active, cute, and high-spirited. Former stripper (yeah, but she was young and trying to pay for college). Owns a small car exotic dealership in the Midwest. Divorced. Resides in Oklahoma. Visiting California to settle the estate of her deceased parents.

HEAT LEVEL" 10/10

HUMOR LEVEL: 9/10

ANCILLARY CHARACTER QUALITY: 10/10

HEA:10/10

STORYLINE: 11/10 (so true)

It's so common for an author to get in a rut. Their books begin to resemble a 10-years-active sitcom, right before it's axed by the network.

This was the case with Hildreth's books of late. Although the content was new and the characters were well thought out, the end result seemed like a recycled tale of yesteryear.

After a twelve month hiatus, Hildreth has returned with a vengeance, a NEW storyline, and a fire from within that we last saw fueled when he wrote Undefeated (and, maybe, ROUGH).

The Man I Hate is FRESH. A storyline that is believable. Characters that are real, flawed, funny, fifty, filthy, and aren't afraid to masturbate in a parking lot if that's what it takes to get results.

I laughed. My eyes welled with tears (good tears). I gasped for breath, I laughed again, and I writhed in my seat from the overabundance of sexy scenes that BELONGED in the book.

One unnerving pet peeve I possess is a sex scene that doesn't belong. Gratuities sex scenes aren't for great books, and this one has not one of them. The sex is where it should be, at the appropriate heat level, and properly described.

The heroine is a 40 year old who has driven from Oklahoma to California to settle the estate of her deceased parents.

Upon arriving, she meets her neighbor, Braxton Rourke, who works as a Hollywood fixer. He works for the likes of Selena Gomez, Jennifer Anniston, and company diffusing drama, burying stories, and knocking heads of creeps on an as-needed basis.

He's 50, silver-haired, and sexy as hell.

She asks him, straight out, for sex. He agrees, but only because she's leaving in 3 days to go home.

Then, something happens and she must stay. She doesn't decide to, she's forced to. I can't say any more than that.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is when the fun begins.

The sexual tension is at an all-time high. Angst out the ying-yang.

In the end, you'll cheer. I mean, you really will. This book is over 320 pages without one paragraph it doesn't need. The pace is like the cars the heroine sells at her exotic car dealership, FAST!

Destined to be one of the best of 2020, The Man I Hate is the only must-read book this author has written.

If you've ever read anything by him that you've enjoyed (I've read them all *yawn*), you need to treat yourself to this one.

It tops them all.

10/10 Must read, as in, you MUST read this book. That's all I can say.

Gotta get my thoughts together on this one...

This was unlike any Scott Hildreth book that I’ve ever read. Ok, check that. There were some elements like previous books (the sex scenes, for one—although there weren’t a whole lot) (and the hero, Braxton, was a bit of an antihero so that’s nothing new). (And you remember Braxton—he’s that ‘fixer’ to the Hollywood stars—he was in some previous book that I can’t remember.) But the feeling I got while reading this was different. The hero went on quite a journey of emotional growth. He was kind of a selfish d**k in the beginning, and I’ll admit his attitude annoyed me at times. It took a life changing event that opened his eyes to how selfishly he was living his life (no spoilers but I had no idea that this ‘event’ would be a major plot point in the book) and caused him to reassess himself.

This book made me think. We only have so much time on this earth—are we using our time wisely?

I have to mention the epilogue....unbelievable but so satisfying anyway! Now that’s a HEA you tell your grandkids about.:)

I liked the way Scott Hildreth wrote about 2020 and the Pandemic that hit the world. The feelings of isolation and fear by many along with a carefree attitude by some leads this group of people on a journey of discovery.

I saw so much of myself and husband in this. I stayed at home scared and isolated while he went to work daily.

The 2020 pause helped us put life in perspective. Although they met and slept with each other quickly, Anna wanted more but was afraid to tell Braxton. Braxton would have continued his love them and leave them relationship.

They were able to form a friendships between themselves and others filled with love, kindness and a never give up attitude.

They filled their days rediscovering the small stuff and taking time to just be. The book was predictable in parts but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

So for about the first 40 percent of the book, I was rating it 1 star and was ready to put it away. To start with it really bugs me that the cover depicts a girl who looks to be about 20 yet the lead female character is pushing 40 and the male lead is older still. Then, she goes to the home where her parents recently died an accidental death and she doesn't grieve at all she's only concerned about having sex with the neighbour. Really bad advice comes from a real estate agent she meets for the first time. The book finally somewhat redeems itself around 40% and I found myself enjoying the banter. Very quick read. Found I skimmed through quite a bit though.

We finally got Braxton's story and it did not disappoint. This book was a wonderful love story unfolding but so much more. You can tell Scott wrote this book from deep within and I just loved it. I couldn't put it down, it was amazing.
If you haven't read any of Scott's books read this one, you won't be disappointed.

Honestly, I try to like this guy’s books. He makes them sound sooo good! In the end they are just meh. Not bad, but nothing great. Style wise, I feel they are well written, but I can’t connect. He bills them as hot as f**k but again, nope.

Also, with this book, I have to say, it wasn’t what I thought it would be. Had I known, I’d have waited a year to read it. Was not excited to read a book about Covid 19 whilst in the midst of Covid 19.

Also, what’s w the title? The man I hate??? When did she hate him other than when Giselle told her to f**k him like she hated him, which failed miserably and then that aspect was totally dropped from the book. Just big disconnects all around on this one for me. Perhaps he should focus on marketing other people’s books, he’s great at that!

Scott has done it! .. Again! I, like a lot of readers, have been waiting for this book and it does not disappoint. This book has everything you could want for the story of Braxton (if you have heard of him from other books, you know exactly what I mean). Add a touch of super hard reality of what is going on in the world and a dash of..Hap, you have it all.
Braxton, the Hollywood fixer and Anna, a bit of a lost soul. Coming together in times of need and making something of it when neither are even sure it's what they want. Facing life changing decisions with troubling times. It's an amazing story. Scott has out done himself with this one.

What a wonderful book! The Man I Hate proves once again why Scott Hildreth is one of my favorite authors. His books are always automatic purchases for me, and I’m never disappointed.

I loved this story and enjoyed the journey that Braxton and Anna took me on. I knew when Braxton was introduced in Tito’s book that his story would be outstanding, and it was. There’s just something about him. Braxton has this sexy confidence that draws you to him. I understood completely how Anna felt.

Anna is a sweetheart. She met Braxton under sad circumstances, but she was always such a breath of fresh air. There is a unique spin on how these two characters get to really know each other. We can all relate under the current circumstances and I believe it made their relationship that much stronger. They could concentrate on and appreciate what was really important.

The secondary characters added a lot to the story. It was great getting to see Hap again, and I was thrilled with the amount of time we got to spend with him. Marge was such a special person and I liked getting to know her. Pratt was hilarious and I would love getting a story about him in the future.

Overall it was a great book and I can't wait to see what we'll get next. I highly recommend reading The Man I Hate.

Amazing

Love can bloom and be found in extrodinary places and circumstances. A one time thing turns into a lifelong thing with a family of sorts, in a matter of weeks. The characters have depth and a heart. I enjoyed watching Anna and Braxton's story unfold. Their relationship went the full span of emotions, attraction, lust, hate, avoidance, annoyance, caring, all the way to love. A great read.

The Man I Hate is a book that you will not be able to put down. Forget adulting for the day and get sucked into this one. With everything going on in the world right now this book is one that should be read. It is hot, sweet and before you know it you are all in with Braxton and Anna. I love Anna and how caring she is. She can hold her own that is for sure. Then you have Braxton who will make you wet and swoon all at the same time. I love seeing all the different sides of him as the Covid-19 affects his life. This book is more then the current pandemic. This book is bringing togetherness. It brings you love when you give up hope. It brings you family when you have none left. This book brings you Hap who will have you in stiches. Scott Hildreth does this beyond phenomenal job keeping you glued to the pages. I for one forgot all my responsibilities for the day and get swept up in The Man I Hate and I'm ready to re-read it all over again because it is just that good. If I could give it more then 5 stars I would. THIS BOOK NEEDS TO BE ONE-CLICKED AND EXPERIENCED TODAY.

Scott has done it again!

Every story Scott tells drawls you in. The further you read, the more time passes and boom your at the end! The Man I Hate is no different!

Braxton finally gets his story told. And what a story it was! As with Scott's stories there is always family, a few close friends and excitement! There was a point I was worried he (Scott) was really going to piss me off but as usual he surprised me.

I have never been disappointed in a Scott Hildreth story!
Well done Mr. Man, well done!

What a great read. Characters that grab you with a storyline that's entertaining and emotion inducing all in a book with current relatable facts/events. Once again Mr Hildreth made time face as I got lost in his book. If you are hesitating about whether to grab this book, take my advice and just do it. Your brain and other parts will thank you for it.

Scott Hildreth has done it again! What looked to be and started like a typical sexy romp / one night stand type of book quickly deepened into a story with amazingly complex and unexpected characters, deeper meanings and a truly thought provoking plot line with an underlying commentary focused current events.

Braxton Rourke is as cocky as they come. He’s a fixer for the Hollywood elite and makes problems disappear for the right amount of cash. He’s confident and set in his ways. And, he no longer does relationships after a failed marriage . . . a literal one and done type of guy.

Anna Wilson is a successful entrepreneur visiting LA after her parent’s deaths to decide what to do with their property. She’s sworn off men after a cheating ex-husband and instead is focused on herself. But, when her sexy as sin silver fox of a neighbor offers what she hasn’t had in over 2 years, she can’t resist, even knowing it will be a one night stand.

But, when the world starts changing in inconceivable ways, these neighbors will find themselves at a crossroads as individuals, as friends, as a couple and, most importantly, as humans.

Honestly, The Man I Hate was super unexpected. I had no idea what was coming my way and I loved every minute of it. It highlights so many thoughts and feelings that many people are struggling with right now and gives credence to the highs and lows that most readers have felt over the past few months. As a couple, Anna and Braxton shouldn’t work. And, it doesn’t seem like they are meant to at first. I loved watching them grow and connect, even when physical closeness isn’t an option. 5 stars for The Man I Hate. Which, for me, was one of my most relevant Hildreth reads to date.

Scott you just ticked most of the boxes On my list of best Eva book, with The Man I Hate.
I loved how it was set now in the time of Covid 19, older couple even older side characters in Hap and Madge, so much amazing information in regards to the Pandemic. You seem to tap in on most of the fears going about and the ignorance of many also, it won’t get me it’s just a flu
I felt I personally knew someone going through this illness, through Braxton.
It was great to have Braxton and Hap back from previous reads , the familiarity I got when reading about these two when Braxton visited Hap on his usual Sunday trip.
I loved how after a quick fling/romp in a carpark of all places Braxton went on about his “ normal life “ whilst we had Anna plotting another hook up as after being on a 2 year hiatus, Anna had realised she wanted to tap that piece again
The next thing we know we are fully into a lockdown of epic proportions never had been experienced before by 99% of us and how all of a sudden I was identifying with Anna in the days running into each other, not caring about ones appearance as we couldn’t go anywhere and the obsession of eating the news 24/7, and the aggravation and anxiety Anna and myself felt when seeing people flaunting the law by ignoring the lockdown laws as in Braxton
This story unfolded without our couple even being in actual physical contact and yet the change that they feel about themselves and each other after 7-8 days. But what happened in that time for Anna was enough for her to know.
I loved the relationship Anna formed with her neighbour like many of us have during this time
It was like Scott knew what we are all feeling atm. I for one have found new relationships with the people I work with and they have unfortunately for them become another part of my extended family 😂🤣
I put into context how many around the world, we have been feeling when having a loved one in hospital being treated for this deadly disease and not being able to find out what’s going on with them, mainly due to the craziness going on within our Medical Facilities and the tirelessly work of Medical staff to our loved ones in their care.
I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend that you read it
Why wouldn’t you? It’s Scott Hildreth.
The man could write on a napkin at McDonalds and it would in my book, make the Best Sellers list in its first days of release.
Our world is forever changed and I for one will remember back to having had this book to love and enjoy during this time of uncertainty .
Thank you

Omg I just read for the 2nd time and it was so much better than the first
To look back a year and a half later from when the Covid Pandemic hit, you see this book again in a whole new perspective
You won’t understand unless you too have been able to do both
Braxton thinking at the time was what a lot of people had thought , we now know so much more and the difference today is , will you take the vaccine or not ?
If this was Braxton and co now “ today” I believe Yes they would
Thus book is a no nonsense read, I live the way Scott puts words together
Thank you again and I fir 1 cannot wait for you to put pen to paper again some day
Your too talented but to Scott Hildreth

Loved all of the characters!

I don't think I've ever read anything and liked every character. This is a first. I really enjoyed this story. I can relate to everyone because I know people like them or because I'm close in age to some of them. Reading this book was like being with family. My only complaint was that COVID-19 was all through this book. I'm still living through it. I read because I want an escape. This made it all too realistic for me at this time. Other than that, it was great. Hap is definitely my favorite of all! In ways, he reminds me of my own dad, whom I miss terribly. Scott always gets to me in one way or another with every story...no matter what the story is about. Which is why I'll always pick up a Scott Hildreth book...every time.

I almost didn’t finish this when Covid-19 started in the book, I live with a news hound and I am sick of hearing about it. I kept at it and was very happy I did.

By the time I finished I could see myself cooking with Anna, arguing with Hap and trying to get Braxton to tell me anything to do with his job.

Amazing read with fantastic characters and great storyline.

A great feeling

This book had me feeling positive and hopeful leading to a feel good at the end. The H, Braxton Rourke was s character introduced in Mr. Hildreth's previous book. In the last book Braxton was mysterious and private. His dad, Hap is a tough as nails veteran who speaks his mind and not politically correct for anyone. I love Hap. He is the comic relief. This book touches on what we all have experienced .

Scott has done it again!! He has such a way with words and always adding a great message to his books. I couldn't wait to read Braxton's story having been introduced to him in previous reads, and I was not disappointed with his story or message. The decisions we make can sometimes have dangerous/life threatening consequences for others. While working through a pandemic Braxton realizes that his actions have consequences that not only he suffers but those around him as well. I could not put this one down, it had me cooked from the first chapter. I'm glad that he took a step back and opened himself to the possibility of something with Anna. Let's not forget Hap, I loved seeing his and Braxton's back and forth banter. This is a Great Read definitely worth the purchase!!!

The Man I Love

What is there to say about Scott Hildreth? His books are perfect. The stories are structured so perfectly, lazily building, not exploding but warmly wrapping around you. His men are always so tough, but melt for their women in the end. My only regret is that we can't lock Scott in a room, so that all he can do is write.

FLOVE this so much!!

Oh. My. Freaking. God!! I absolutely loved this book!! I literally could not put this down!!
If you have read the Devils Disciples MC series, you will have met Braxton and his Dad, Hap already. Their banter had me laughing out loud! And in this book it's no different.
Braxton is a fixer, you need something to disappear, he's your man. Anna moves in next door to him whilst sorting out her parents estate.
After helping her out of a sticky situation, sparks fly but both are adamant that it's a one time thing.........until one of them changes their mind!!
What happens next just blows me away, it had me crying with laughter and crying because I was sad. The rollercoaster had me all over the place but it also help restore my faith in humanity. What a fantastic read!!
There are so many moments in this book that I could talk about in this review but I don't want to give any spoilers!!
Honest to God, you really need to one click this book!!

Well, I wondered how people dated or hooked up during this situation we're in and leave it to Scott to write a real love story with some really interesting characters. Each layer of the story had these characters growing into better lives than before the pandemic.

It wasn't preachy because I live in Michigan and we are cheering a 77 year old barber (Hap's brother) who has a line of customers (social distance appropriately lined) but Facebook and local TV just reported that a worker at our air cargo company has the virus in little town northern Michigan. We all have our stories of our odd new lives. I watch my church on YouTube but the church next door is drive in...listen on car radio.

I just wondered how we'd get a love story out of these times and Scott nailed it!!

Lots of hope here!!

Scott’s writing was outstanding!

Spoiler!
I had trouble getting through the book because the topic hit too close to home.

Did I love the characters? YES! Were my expectations of another outstanding Scott Hildredth book met? YES!

I just wish I was warned of the storyline’s use of the Covid 19 pandemic. I live in the northeast and I’m in an area that’s considered a large hotspot. We are still under stay at home order. I’m also a teacher and Virtual Learning is not easy. It’s even harder when you have students lose a parent to Covid 19. If I knew this book was based around the quarantine I honestly would’ve put off reading it. It’s just too raw for me.

If you are a fan of Scott’s writing, I promise this is an excellent read. It’s just my intention to inform you of the use of Covid 19.

I thought I could only have one favorite BBF...

I was wrong! Not only did my love of Braxton flourish, the soft spot grew for Hap, too!
This story touched on things that are very real for us now as well as how we will be affected in the coming months and years to come! The interpersonal relationships that develop with all the characters is fascinating and kept me wanting more. The banter between the hero and the rest of the characters enhanced each nuance of the storyline making me beg for more. I experienced many emotions throughout the book's entirety, not wanting it to end. Alas, I came away with emotional satisfaction from yet another Scott masterpiece! If you're a true fan, you won't be disappointed....I never have! Keep it up, Scott!!
