Can the big bad biker really protect me and my daughter?
On the run with my baby daughter, I never expected to end up surrounded by massive bikers. I’ve seen the violence that gangs can do, and I’m not sure a motorcycle club is any different. But Maverick might be able to change my mind about Hell’s Ankhor. When I show up on his doorstep with a busted car and a baby in my arms, he doesn’t hesitate to take us in. And from the moment I see him, I know I want more.
It’s crazy to even think it. My violent ex is coming for me, and I can’t put anyone else in danger. But even more important is protecting baby Grace. And Maverick and his club are just the men to help. I think I’ve finally found my match in this gigantic biker’s arms. Can I trust that this time the story will end in a happily ever after? Or will my past crash into our lives and ruin the family we could have together?
Maverick is book four in the Hell’s Ankhor m/m MC series. Read for a slow burn that will ignite the flame within Maverick showing just how far he will go to keep Jonah and his daughter safe.
Well, this was very different from the previous books in the series.
The club’s mechanic and a young single dad on the run from his abusive ex.
This was more sweet than thrilling, I liked listening to it and the narrator did a fairly good job with the audio.
side note: none of these books (after the first) addresses the topic of safe sex. No condoms are used nor do they talk about it. Sadly that’s why none of them can reach a higher rating than four stars from me. No idea what happened here since the couple in the first book did use condoms without question.
************* Hell's Ankhor Series
Book 1 - Blade - 4.0 stars Book 2 - Gunnar - 4.25 stars Book 3 - Rebel - 4.0 stars Book 4 - Maverick - 3.75 stars Book 5 - Tex Book 6 - Dante Book 7 - Tru Book 8 - Joker Book 9 - Nix Book 10 - Priest - tbr
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was sweet and annoyed me in equal measure. I love an abused character escaping and finding his way, and this was certainly Jonah with baby Grace. But OMG did I get sick and tired of the push/pull and the lack of communication. I mean, I guess, if they'd actually had a conversation about how they were feeling, the book would have been considerably shorter. It just annoyed me so much. And I'd planned to read a few of the others, but after reading reviews I see this tends to be the trend with the series *sigh*
From Coop and Rebel, to Maverick and Jonah... And that was a mistake.
In all type of "books relationships" I like that the two main characters are on equal footing, I don't like damsel in distress stories, (if you don't have strength you have brains, witt, charisma, something) and this was one of those.
Jonah is running away from an abusive ex and his car brakes down, he seeks help and finds Maverick to rescue him... They start a roommate's relationship that develops into love. Also, Jonah has a 7 month old daughter named Grace and her interactions with the whole gang saved the show.
So what's there not to like? I already said the damsel in distress thing, but I could have lived with that if it was well played, he did come from an abusive relationship so it would have been ok BUT, a man who has been slapped, verbally abused, used, and almost raped, looks at Maverick from the first time and wants to get in his pants, WTF.
It doesn't work that way, that type of abuse doesn't just go away that fast so you can jump to the next guy, is a healing process, and even if the guy is hot, your self preservation won't let you get there until you KNOW the person and you TRUST them, in here it happened instantly, he did fight it, but I swear to God, 30% of this book is both of them thinking about each others bodies, faces, man parts, etc, and that 30% is the beginning of the book. So yeah, that was a total WTF here.
And I love Grace, with all my heart, but she was not written as 7 month old baby, she didn't get sick, she barely cried, and she behaved even though her life wasn't normal.
So yeah, the little details made it hard for me to be totally in love with this one. And is a shame because the characters to me seem good.

This has been my least favourite installment in this series so far.
It didn't really feel like all that much happened beyond Jonah and Grace arriving and Maverick forming a family unit with them. Everything also felt just a little too convenient - car breaks down and Mav is the mechanic, Mav needs an artist for his custom paint works and Jonah is a graphic designer who started out with graffiti....
Even the abusive ex didn't provide much tension. He was barely mentioned outside of Jonah's internal thoughts, and wasn't talked about until almost the climax when Rebel saw the missing persons notice. Even when he did show up, it was all over pretty quick, yet there was still time for a massive miscommunication between Mav and Jonah that just felt out of place and only occured to put Jonah somewhere accessible to Dylan.
It didn't add to the story, it just made it feel like Jonah didn't know Mav as well as he clearly did, because they'd been living together from meeting, now suddenly he doesn't know who Maverick is as a person?? I also wanted to know the outcome of Dylan's arrest and not just a vague 'he's going to prison'.
I think if there had been a little more going on rather than just a lot of cutesy family moments it would have held my attention more, but I was relieved to get this one finished and move on to the next book.

I love bikers theme stories. It never fails to have a lot of family love and support even though they aren't relatrd. I love how every members of the bikers gang supports each other and watch each other's back. I always have a weak spot for children as well and this oh my world, has the best of both world. We see how the gang supports Maverick, Jonah and Grace in their relationship. It's really a heartwarming read.
I didn't like this one quite as much as the previous three books but I still really enjoyed it. This one was definitely more focused on the main two characters, Maverick and Jonah, as well as Jonah's daughter Grace and that meant it lacked a little bit of the exciting plot that the other books had. It was really only in the last 25% where there was really any plot excitement and I kind of wanted a little more. I was also a little bit more frustrated with the will they, won't they in this book. i think this is because there was less plot stuff to distract me. I also missed the club dynamic in this book. Though all the other characters are still around there's a lot less because Maverick has his own shop and Jonah is an outsider. I would have loved see a bit more of the club dynamic in this one.
As far as the relationship went I thought it was pretty good. I don't mind kids in romances and I thought Grace was a cute addition to this story. I thought our villain was pretty good and created good conflict for the characters but all the action at the end happened so quickly it became a little unbelievable, but not to the point where I thought people were super out of character. I liked that the trauma of being in an abusive relationship wasn't completely swept under the rug but I do think some people might find that Jonah was too trusting of Maverick too quickly.
This was a book I was looking forward to and overall I was very satisfied with what I got. The teaser for the next book didn't intrigue me as much as the one's in the previous book have but given how much I've enjoyed this series so far, I don't doubt that I will continue along as these books come out.
DNF @ 84%. This started well and I enjoyed Maverick, Jonah and baby Grace but by 70% I was skimming and when the drama started at 84% I realized I really had no interest in sticking this out.
Well these stories get better each time. Each one of club members are so different and the authors do such a good job of writing these differences. Their significant others als9 come with a range or host of situations or baggage. This one was good. Maverick seemed more solid and grounded than the others so it was easy to be invested. I liked the storyline, liked how the guys rallied around and liked the sense of family!!
me reading the second half of the book - GROWN MEN THIS GROWN FUCKING MEN CAN'T HAVE A GOOD CONVERSATION
I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR THE NEXT BOOK
Tropes and tags single dad x biker sunshine size difference hurt - comfort found family mild slow burn (for me it was) femme Mc Mc likes makeup top & bottom roles
TW/CW mentions of past homophobia and bullying mentions of attempted rape mention of physical abuse on page attempted rape manipulation (not between MC's) kidnapping on page death threats to a 6 month old baby

I skipped Rebel because I really wanted to read Maverick first and I’m glad I did. The entire story is great, my favorite in the series thus far. Maverick was FANTASTIC!!
Wonderfully fantastic... The book was amazing... It had a lot of details and juicy scenes to it... The characters and their personalities match them perfectly... The plot and the storyline was very descriptive and amazing...
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Maverick was not expecting someone to knock on his door late one night. And he definitely wasn't expecting a beautiful man with pain in his eyes to be cuddling a baby under his rain jacket while standing on his doorstep. His protective instincts roused immediately, though, and Jonah and baby Gracie burrowed their way into his heart right then and there.
Those protective instincts mean Maverick and his club will protect them, and that's everything to Jonah. But what about when the threat is resolved? Does it mean Jonah and Gracie pack up and leave the man and the family they've come to love? Does Maverick feel the same way about him that Jonah does about Maverick?
I loved this installment of the MC and the men who populate it. Jonah and Maverick are a pair of opposites who mesh together seamlessly. The big bad bald biker who looks scary but is a gentle lamb with his elegant Jazz and his baby Gracie. Folding them into his heart and his MC family was great reading and just makes me love this series even more.
I jumped into this book as I'm a complete sucker for single dad kind of stories, I haven't read any of the other books in this series, and yet I still really enjoy it!.. It was a lot sweeter than I thought taking into account the biker club and the premise but it was exactly what I needed, I love how Mav and Jonah's relationship develops, Mav was so attentive an willing to help, and of course, baby Grace was the best!, seeing how Mav fell in love with her as well as the other members of the club was adorable.
God, I'm such a sucker for a solid hurt/comfort taking care of the poor fella in the downpour kind of book. So while I'm shaking my head at myself here, I lapped it all up like you wouldn't believe. The best thing about this book: You get exactly what you would expect. The worst thing about this book: You get exactly what you would expect. So there's Jonah on the run from his violent stalker ex, rightfully distrustful and with a baby to care for (which I thought was a little sketchy, why you'd bring a baby into a relationship such as theirs was) and Maverick, a gentle giant kind of man, who gets all protective. Basically nothing incredibly new, but why mess up a perfect recipe anyway... The stalker ex part could have done with a little more fleshing out, but the main focus was on the relationship and building up trust and integrating into the biker family aspects. I still love the whole MC vibe, though this really is a heavily romanticied version of one.
Now I have to go back and read the previous ones, because I want to know about everyone. MC books are one of my weakness, add in the fact that this groups does good, welp I’m hooked. This one is about two men looking for a family. One man who everyone loves but doesn’t have his special someone, and one given one but at a horrible cost. A few times I wanted to shake them both, but they got there. I love when kids interrupt like real life little Grace was perfect. The writing was good. The smexy was nice, and the journey to move was great. Now do I read Tex’s hook next or start at the beginning
This was fun. It kept me entertained for sure! I enjoyed Jonah. He is a great dad. He’s strong and caring. I liked maverick too. He appears gruff, but he’s a big softie. He immediately fell for Grace and j love that. He was so kind and thoughtful toward Jonah and Grace. And he was protective. I enjoyed the storyline of Jonah running from his ex, but I didn’t love some of the miscommunication here and there. Overall it was a fun read.
Notes: 2/5 spice levels, single dad, survivor of abuse, abusive ex, motorcycle club, protective mc
3.5 “I was going to type “so cute” and keep it pushing but I don’t want to diminish the sensitive subject that is Domestic Violence and attempted sexual assault that is discussed. The author approach the plot lines beautifully. Great found family, pure love between the MC’s, the daughter is the STAR of the show; she’s absolutely ADORABLE. Somehow this managed to be so lighthearted despite the circumstances; it made my heart FOND.

This was hands down my favorite book in the series. I mean what’s not to love. A strong man who is basically a walking talking teddy bear who falls for the guarded single dad who was abused by his previous stalker fiancé. They fit so well together and they were so cute. And grace was a little angel. Loved her.
A baby always makes a book much more entertaining and interesting. Grace is so adorable and her dad Dylan needs all the love he so deserves. His so called ex is such a douche bag ! Maverick is huge but he has that calming vibes which Dylan is in so much need. They make a striking couple !! 😊😍
Maverick and Jonah relationship was sweet. Maverick didn't seem like a patch member of the club more like a acquiescence. But in the end they get their HEA.
I thought Jonah and Maverick made a very cute couple. Especially with Grace. I liked Maverick more between the two of them but I liked their story line in general. I also liked how Jonah got to find himself with the makeup and how Maverick embraced him for it. I've always had a soft spot for storylines like that.
I was dying to read this one since I finished Rebel, and when I saw Booksprout had ARC ecopies I just couldn't wait anymore.
I was really intrigued by Jonah and his little girl, Maverick wasn't one of the most interesting characters for me, but in the previous book's epilogue we got a glimpse of their first encounter (deep night, guns, fear, and a little crying baby are perfect ingredients for a recipe, don't you think?) and it seemed truly interesting.
The love story was up to my expectations. It's a cute mix between instalove and slowburn. I'm not usually very fond of instalove... But if it's developed like this (giving time for the feelings to burn up before they start having a thing) I don't mind it. Jonah and Maverick fit with each other, Maverick is like a protective bear while Jonah is defiant and distrustful. They click just right and it was entertaining reading their story.
But I had some objections with the overall story.
First, I think it lacked depth.
Yes, the romance is cute and yes, it's really easy to read. Before I even realized it I had nearly read it and had only a couple of chapter left. But when I look back at the story I can't say there was a lot going on...
Most of the book (like the 70% more or less) is about them getting to know each other, Maverick trying to win Jonah's trust and for them both resisting their attraction until they can't do it anymore. Then Jonah's past is revealed and we get some action... But it ends in the blink of an eye.
Maybe my problem is that the 3 previous books had really interesting backstories that complemented the romance, with a rival MC threatening their safety and creating problems for the Hell's Ankhor guys there was always something going on. Not in this book, though. It's really peaceful until the very end, and as I say it ends very quickly... Because the threat that follows Jonah is not the dangerous.
Due to Jonah's attitude I was expecting something bigger, and the discovery of what was going on end up being... Mild.
Another issue I had is Grace. Let me explain: Grace was fantastic. The true hero of this book, and the most interesting and adoring character. How was she a problem, then? Well, if she wasn't there, the romance would have been way less exciting... And that's not how it's supposed to be, right?
Overall it was a good read, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it very much (particularly the first half, there are real funny moments) and it was a pleasure seeing all the previous main characters around, as well as getting to know a little more of future ones (Tex, for example).
Once again, we get a glimpse of the next book in the last chapter. It will be started by Tex and his BFF who is in jail (Jazz). I hope for it to have more action and a more heated relationship (it seems like it will be a Gay For You story and I love them, so fingers crossed here lol). Can't wait for it to come out!
Even though I have read three of the Hell's Ankhor books we never really got too much information about Maverick other than the fact that he was good with engines and he was a long-standing member of the club. With this book we really get to see the softer side of the club with Maverick, now don't get me wrong as with any member Hell's Ankhor if someone is pushed far enough, they are going to be one hell of a badass but for the most part Maverick was a big teddy bear. A guy who wants to settle down finally and have what some of the other guys in the club have found. He never thought he would get his happily ever after until one stormy night a man with a baby knocks on his garage door in desperate need of help but Maverick senses that help isn't the only thing Jonah and baby Grace need.
Jonah and his daughter Grace have been on the run from his ex for months now and Jonah is tired of running but he knows that he must keep going because if he stops then his ex will find him. Dylan was everything Jonah thought he ever wanted, someone to take care of him and make him feel loved but not too long after Grace is born everything changes. After hours of being on the road Jonah's old car is starting to crap out on him and he knows he must find somewhere to stop fast. He sees a sign for a gas station but of course they are closed, and it seems like luck is on his side when just a couple miles up the road he sees a garage. After bundling up his daughter and knocking on the door Jonah doesn't expect anyone to answer in the middle of the night but what he expects less is for a tattooed giant with a gun to answer the door. One look at this hulk of a man and Jonah can't decide if he wants to run or climb him like a tree.
Maverick only wants to help Jonah but how can he help someone who fears him and his club? The only way that Maverick can help is to get Jonah to trust him. As Jonah finally starts to accept help from Maverick, he realizes that he is not only falling for the biker, but he is falling for the club and the town. He knows he can't stay forever because he has to get back on the road. As feelings grow stronger and the danger of Dylan grows closer Jonah and Maverick know that working together is the best option they have.
There was nothing I didn't love about this book. There really is something about a big hunk of a man with a soft side and we really got that with Maverick. I've seen reviews for this series that vary from incredible to less than stellar but for this series has everything!! Love, family, heat and HEA's!
Aiden Bates and Ali Lyda are simply sublime as a writing team when it comes to a 'family' series and frankly I can't get enough of them. I love that there's a message about an issue be it domestic abuse, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, hate crime; it's there in the text saying it's not ok and it should be dealt with and there's always someone to support you.
As I've said in previous reviews (I've read a lot of these books!) AB and AL have created a motor cycle club who have expanded to find their own personalities, people and lives outside the club and along the way they have brought together a library of hot, sexy, deeply tortured souls who want to love and be loved and loved they definitely are! This is definitely aimed at adult readers with adult content! Scenes between the sheets, against the walls, in the kitchen, or wherever are hot and sexy and between men! If you don't like that don't read these books!!!
Beautiful lonely Maverick joined the club as an adult without the childhood traumas and issues of some of the other members but still wants someone to love and protect. When he's interrupted by late night visitors, Jonah and Grace, who never seems to get older than 7 months, arrive like a personal gift to answer his prayers. Jonah has his own issues that make him wary of the gentle giant, not that Grace is she falls in love with Mav immediately. Jonah brings his own trouble to the club which of course is swiftly dealt with but also brings positives with him too.
As always this is a beautifully written book, full of emotion, angst and love; I'm totally recommending it to you xx
