this novel is a poetic exploration of grief, memory, absence of memory, imagination, survival, love... i believe this is a work of autofiction?? it uses short, vignette-like chapters which read like snapshots, fragments, recollections. i really enjoyed this author's writing style (vivid and imaginative) combined with the unconventional structure. i would like to read more novels as unique as this.
also, the translator did an excellent job, nothing sounded stilted, everything flowed. if i rmbr correctly i've never read a book by a bosnian author translated into english until now, and this rly opened my eyes to learning more about this country/neighbouring regions where this novel takes place...for historical context and just to educate myself tbh (simply put there's much i'd like to learn abt southern european history+culture. also lots of brief mentions of food in here that i enjoyed googling).
i'm on the lookout for more books from this publisher now. from their instagram: "Sandorf Passage is a home to writing inspired by both conflict zones and the dangers of complacency"
