Florence Nightingale: Nur Taten verändern die Welt

Rate this book

Engagingly written biographical account of Florence Nightingale for a popular/young audience. The book strives to present her both as relatable and special and takes the familiarity to call her subject by her first name throughout the book and include a self-made drawing of her among the illustrations. Bohn embeds the events of Nightingale's life in the larger currents of industrialization, gender relations and the public image of nurses and common soldiers and stresses that Nightingale's contribution was less as a nurse and more as an organizer, teacher, and statistician. Many direct quotations from Nightingale's writings make her come to life (even though the author often seems to "know" what she or others are thinking or feeling). That might explain the book's curious emphasis on Nightingale's early life - two thirds of the book are dedicated to her life in obscurity, lobbying her family for permission to become a nurse, only the last third deals with her decades of nursing, and the last decades of her life are covered in a few brief pages.

Sehr interessantes Buch.
