- W. BOB HOLLAND -

Read it for Halloween. It was alright for entertaining one's self on a rainy night. Some of the stories were really written as ghost stories or supernatural happenings while the rest are more practical with explanations as to what the “ghosts” actually was (think Scooby Doo but in quaint English).
What was enjoyable to me was the language, i.e., the words and phrases used to describe the hauntings and spooky scenes. I feel that ghost stories from the past, written by Edgar Allan Poe and his centuries-old counterparts, make such enjoyable reading because they were so beautifully written compared to modern novels.
Not bad, a few of the stories were rather entertaining. Some were kind of sub-par, though, and many felt like they were badly rushed at the end. Overall, a pleasant experience. The stories being rather short, it is a nice book to leaf through in a short break or just before bed. I also liked the mix of "truly" supernatural events, and some "real" events appearing supernatural.
Admittedly, this book was released in 1941 so I’m not sure what I expected in terms of ghost stories, but had it been compiled today I feel certain they would have been spookier. As is, they fell into three categories: the ghosts are actually just people from insane asylums or animals, the ghosts need to settle their earthly affairs before they can disappear, or the ghosts are just fun little hints of the past that don’t harm anyone and disappear as quickly as they appear. I found it fascinating in researching these stories that most of them do not have known authors, and the rest came from very early in the 1900s, and as a result of this book, W. Bob Holland is credited with many of the stories to this day.
My personal favorites were “The Parlor-Car Ghost”, “The Spectre Bride”, “The Ghost of a Live Man”, and “The Ghost of Washington”. In contrast, I felt that “A Phantom Toe” and “How He Caught the Ghost” really phoned it in both in story length, build to the climax/reveal, and the actual secret revealed behind the ghosts.
All well-written, the stories were delightful and quick reads even if I criticize some of them! The book is very unlikely to leave nightmare’s, as it feels like a study in ghost stories more than a series meant to strike fear into the reader.
It's a fun compilation of public domain ghost stories. The main issue with it is that nearly half the stories don't entail actual ghosts. Definitely did a good job by beginning with Poe and ending with the famous "Washington's ghost."
This was a mixed bag of spooky stories, with some being legitimately chilling, while others just happened to feature a ghost. At times, it felt rather like reading the quotations section of Moby-Dick, where the author pools together any and all quotes that happen to mention whales.
I was also very surprised that multiple tales . All in all, a decent collection with some good writing.
So, near as I can tell, this book was a result of some guy back in 1904 who liked ghost stories and wanted to share some. There are a couple famous writers, but a bunch of the stories are unattributed. There's quite a few different tones, settings and styles but these are all old ghost stories. If you're not a fan of older stuff, this won't appeal to you. But if you are a fan of old school horror lit and you happen upon this book I would pick it up.

Not all of them have ghosts in it; some teach you how ghosts are in fact concocted by humans, and they too form an interesting read. The chill factor though is lacking in several stories, and the absence of uniformity is bothersome. One cannot read the book at night expecting the stories to make you stay awake or initiate nightmares.
